    Martha Brooks Culinary Arts Scholarship
My name is Ka'Liyah Naylor. I am a current junior in High School. I participate in the Culinary Arts program at my local high school trade school in southern Indiana. I have always had a strong connection with the preparation and enjoyment of food. From a young age I always helped my grandmother in the kitchen. We were always trying new combinations and recipes; at such a young age I would much prefer to cook rather than to play with toys. In my early high school career, it is when cooking, more specifically baking, really started to become my passion. The amount of burnt food and ugly cakes I have made have only pushed me to learn and become stronger in this field. I have currently worked for two different restaurants. This has given me so much background understanding and experience of this industry. Furthermore, it has made my passion even stronger. My plan for culinary arts is to own my own bakery. However, I don't just want to own a bakery, I want to create a safe space. My dream is to create a place that not only sells desserts and different savory foods, but to create an event space that welcomes everyone. I want to be the bakery that the students are able to come and study at after school, or the place where the busy mother gets a chance to rest. I want to not only own and run this bakery but include the local community as well; including the local community in ways of selling local artists' products and, partnering up with local non-profits and doing everything I can to better the world. I do not currently know where I want my bakery to reside, but I know that wherever I land it will be better than my benefit. I find great importance in being an active partner in the community; not only because its where you reside, but where the future generations will be left with. A common saying is "food is the way to the heart", and many know that is applicable. I want to create food that one can find themselves reminiscing over for various days. Furthermore, I want my food to be something that people can find their passion through. I want to be able to teach the passion of food; through young students, new parents, and anyone looking for something to elevate their life. Culinary arts has changed my life indefinitely. I am so grateful to have support and be able to have the incentive to make this dream a possibility. More than anything, I want to create that pure joyful smile, because nothing truly compares to true happiness.
