Bio

My name is Kaitlyn Thomas. I am first generation college student. I graduated from Youngstown Early College High School with my high school diploma as well as my associates degree. I currently go to The Ohio State University as a graduating junior. I am pursuing my Masters degree from The Ohio State University as well. In the 4 years at Ohio State I will be able to obtain my Bachelors and my Masters degree. I am majoring in social work and I am currently doing an internship at Directions for Youth and Family Services. I come from a low-income household so my family cannot help me during my college career. I am applying for scholarships so that I can move out of Ohio and get a good job in social work without having to worry about debt.

What makes me proud to be an American is the opportunities that we have to grow. Growing up from a very low income neighborhood in Ohio you don’t really see people going to college or even having goals for the future. I am so grateful for the opportunities that I have received that have allowed me to go to college. Being a first generation college student was really hard because you don’t have that person in your family to look up to. Being an American you can dream big. You can look up to stars that are on the big stage now and it is likely that they to were poor or living out of their cars. One change that I want to see in our country is investing back into our youth. I feel like often times people are selfish and do that recognize how big of an impact investing in our youth can be. More specifically I would like to invest into the mental health of our youth. With everything going on in the world like school shooting and a global pandemic, its scary to imagine how our youths emotions will change over time. I feel that it is important to make sure that their mental health doesn’t suffer from all the things going on in the world and even in their homes. Investing in the youth invests back into America. The youth that we invest into today will be the people who grow up and make new inventions and create change so that every American feels safe and loved. The youth that we invest into today will invest back into us as we age. They will be the people who possibly find a cure for cancer or figure out how to slow down aging. I think that if we invest into the children and encourage them to dream big then we will only be better our future lives. My part in this is working with the kids in the schools to provide mental health services. You never know how much impact you have on one person and how much impact they could have on the world. Helping one child’s mental health may seem small but it’s honestly just like a domino effect. Helping one child could possibly help another child and they can grow up to help more people and possibly make even bigger changes to the economy. I love America and I love the opportunities we have to grow and thrive. We need to continue to create those opportunities for our children and invest into them so they can invest back into us.
