The education: Dream achiever As a female Puerto Rican student, is difficult to find a place where you can study whatever you want without others criticizing you because of your gender, nationality, or your decision for a career. I am a music student and have gone through multiple obstacles trying to reach my dreams of becoming an artist in our difficult system. I will explain in more detail the importance of education not only for me but for our people. In Puerto Rico, getting an education in the ’40s and ‘50s was difficult, especially for women. My grandmother could not go to school because she had to take care of her siblings and cook for them at her early nine years old. She raised five children on her own even without an education. My mom became a police officer with a bachelor's degree in criminal justice. Since I was a little girl, I have a passion for music, especially singing. Whenever someone asked me what I wanted to become when I grew up, I always said I wanted to be a singer. Most people saw that vision as something impossible to achieve. As I grew up, I started investigating and preparing to achieve that goal and for that, I needed to get a good education. Here in Puerto Rico opportunities for musicians are limited and for that reason, I want to get to Berklee College of Music and explore international studies. Getting an education is important because it prepares people for the world in every aspect of life. This important part of life should be available for everyone, and I want to be an example to everyone, especially the girls out there that want to achieve an education in and out of Puerto Rico. I want to be a living testimony that dreams come true you just must work for it and fight for it. Education is more than just going to school; it starts in home. Our guardians teach us morals to take with us throughout our lives, schools give us tools to get into what we want. What hurts me the most is that some cannot study because of financial situations. Education is a right, not a privilege. Before concluding, I want to thank everyone who is making this scholarship possible. Thank you for supporting students is our island. This gives me hope that our Puerto Rican youth will forge a brighter future for our country and the world. Thank you again!
