Hi, I’m Kailyn! I am currently a high school senior, hoping to go to college and eventually earn my doctoral degree in physical therapy. I love getting involved in my community and school, joining various clubs including SGA, Women in STEM, National Honors Society, Mu Alpha Theta, and National Art Honors Society. I am very passionate about athletics and health as well, shown through my captaincy on my varsity track team. I want to acquire an abundance of knowledge in my career field to be able to give people the best treatment possible. From injury prevention, recovery, nutrition, and the psychological side of health, I find it very important that my future clients are able to get all the help they need in one place. I set my goals and ambitions high, and I won’t stop until I reach them. All of this starts with a good education, which is why applying to scholarships is imperative to my aspirations. I dream big, reach for the stars, and will make a big impact on the world.

Nickels Student Athlete Scholarship
Everyone has a unique story, yet shared experiences can unify us in sports. My story as a student-athlete is personal, but I know others experience similar challenges and success.
I did not fully experience athletics until I was a freshman in high school. I made the cheer team and excelled, even becoming a State Champion junior year. During the spring of my freshman year, I tried out for the track team to stay active. Unexpectedly, I fell in love with the sport. After juggling both sports, I came to the realization that my love for track surpassed cheer, and the environment was much healthier. I made the tough call to quit cheer and focus on track, and found myself exponentially happier. I took a leap of faith to do what is best for me, and never regretted it.
With my focus on track, my goals were ambitious. I wanted to go to States, however my junior indoor season came to an abrupt halt when I was diagnosed with Chronic Exertional Compartment Syndrome, which greatly limits my running abilities. Unable to train like my teammates, I struggled with self-doubt and comparisons. I started to tie my self worth to my performance, which was not healthy, nor was it helpful. I had to look inward with self-compassion, and understand the fact that everyone is on a different journey. It did not serve me to compare or criticize.
Approaching senior year, my dream of reaching States was unattainable on this path. I had to look at different angles to succeed, if only to prove to myself that I was capable. I found that opportunity in pole vaulting, despite having no prior experience. I dedicated months to focusing on it, honing my skills to prepare myself for the upcoming season. In December, I exceeded my expectations, placing second in a Varsity meet, and earning my first medal. I continued to improve throughout the season, eventually hitting the state qualifying mark. I found my confidence again. This taught me that there is no single path to achieve your goals, and it is okay to adjust your plans.
My athletic career taught me numerous lessons that I will carry forever: the importance of mental health, courage to make hard choices, and understanding that life is not a race. Plans change and success might not happen right away. I would not change my experience, the highs or the lows, because it shaped the person I am today.
