Playing golf requires patience, which demands a high concentration level and a calm demeanor. Throughout my time playing golf, I have learned that patience is necessary to succeed on the course and in life. The sport has taught me valuable skills that I plan to apply to my future career as a veterinarian. The first lesson I learned from golf is the importance of staying calm and composed, even in stressful situations. When playing golf, it's essential to remain focused and not let external factors affect your game. This skill can be applied to my future career as a veterinarian, as animals can be unpredictable and often require a calm and collected approach to provide proper care. The second lesson I learned is the importance of perseverance. Golf is challenging, and it takes time and practice to improve. As a beginner, I struggled with my swings but didn't give up. I learned how to make the necessary adjustments through consistent practice and gradually improved my game. This lesson can be applied to my future career as a veterinarian, as there will be times when things don't go as planned, and it will require perseverance and patience to overcome the challenges. The third lesson I learned is the importance of attention to detail. In golf, every shot counts, and even the slightest mistake can significantly impact the game. This lesson can be applied to my future career as a veterinarian, as attention to detail is critical in diagnosing and treating animals. The fourth lesson I learned is to take things one step at a time. In golf, it's crucial to focus on the present shot and not get ahead of yourself. This lesson can be applied to my future career as a veterinarian, as taking things one step at a time when treating animals is essential. Rushing the process can lead to mistakes, and taking things slowly and methodically can improve the overall outcome. Finally, golf has taught me the importance of patience. Patience is required in every aspect of the game, from lining up the shot to waiting for other players to take their turn. This lesson can be applied to my future career as a veterinarian, as patience is essential when dealing with animals. Some animals can be difficult to handle, and it may take time and patience to build a relationship with them and provide proper care. In conclusion, playing golf has taught me valuable lessons that I plan to apply to my future career as a veterinarian. The skills I have learned, such as staying calm and composed, perseverance, attention to detail, taking things one step at a time, and patience, will be essential in providing proper animal care. I believe that the skills I have learned from golf will make me a better veterinarian and enable me to provide the best possible care to the animals in my care.
Ventana Ocean Conservation Scholarship
The ocean is a vast and complex ecosystem home to millions of species. As a lover of the ocean and its inhabitants, I am passionate about protecting this delicate balance of life. With my environmental science degree, I hope to contribute to the effort to preserve the ocean and its many species for future generations.
One of the most pressing issues facing the ocean today is the problem of plastic pollution. Plastic waste is a significant threat to marine life, as it can entangle and suffocate animals or be mistaken for food. As someone who cares deeply about oceanic life, I make it a point to reduce my plastic waste as much as possible. I bring reusable bags and containers when shopping and avoid using single-use plastics whenever possible.
Another way that I care for oceanic life is by supporting sustainable seafood practices. Overfishing and destructive fishing practices can devastate marine ecosystems, and it is important to make informed choices when purchasing seafood. I try to buy seafood that is sustainably caught or farmed, and I avoid species that are overfished or caught using harmful methods.
As an environmental science major, I am also learning about how human activity affects the ocean. Climate change, ocean acidification, and pollution pose significant threats to the ocean's health and its inhabitants. With my degree, I hope to work towards finding solutions to these problems and promoting sustainable practices that protect the ocean.
One of my goals after obtaining my degree is to work with organizations focused on ocean conservation. Many groups are doing important work to protect the ocean, from advocating for policies that reduce pollution to conducting research that helps us better understand marine ecosystems. I believe that by working with these organizations, I can make a real impact on the health of the ocean and the many species that call it home.
Another way that I hope to make a difference is by educating others about the importance of ocean conservation. Many people are unaware of the ocean's threats or the impact their actions can have on marine life. By sharing my knowledge and passion for the ocean, I hope to inspire others to care for this vital ecosystem and take action to protect it.
In conclusion, caring for oceanic life is essential to preserving our planet's health. As someone who loves the ocean and its many species, I am committed to doing my part to protect this delicate ecosystem. With my environmental science degree, I hope to work towards solving the ocean's many problems today, from plastic pollution to overfishing to climate change. I am excited to contribute to the effort to protect the ocean and its inhabitants and to inspire others to care for this incredible ecosystem.
Ethel Hayes Destigmatization of Mental Health Scholarship
Depression can be a debilitating condition affecting not only one's mental health but also one's ability to function daily. For me, my depression had a significant impact on my academic performance and social life. However, I realized everyone has struggles, and I should not judge someone I don't know. Even though I inherited depression from my mother, it will not stop me from pursuing my dream as a vet.
During my high school years, my depression affected my grades significantly. I would often find myself unable to focus on my studies and would instead spend hours lost in my thoughts. I would frequently miss classes and assignments, causing my grades to suffer. Despite my teachers' attempts to help me, I felt isolated and alone.
My depression also affected my social life. I found it difficult to make friends and engage in social activities. I often avoided social gatherings and events, preferring to spend my time alone. This only made me feel more isolated and added to the feelings of despair and hopelessness that I was already experiencing.
However, one day I had a realization that changed my perspective on my struggles. I was talking to my mother about my depression when she shared that she had struggled with depression for much of her life. Her honesty about her struggles made me realize that everyone has their battles and should not judge someone I don't know.
This realization gave me the strength to seek help for my depression. I started seeing a therapist, and together, we developed strategies to manage my depression. I also joined a support group where I could talk to others who were going through similar struggles. These steps helped me to cope with my depression and slowly start to regain control of my life.
Even though I inherited depression from my mother, it will not stop me from pursuing my dream as a vet. I have always been passionate about animals and have dreamed of becoming a vet since childhood. Despite the challenges that I have faced, I am determined to make this dream a reality.
To achieve my goal, I have had to work hard to improve my grades. I have sought help from my teachers and peers and put in extra hours of study to catch up on the work I missed due to my depression. I have also tried engaging in social activities, even though it can be challenging. I have joined clubs and organizations related to animal welfare, allowing me to connect with like-minded individuals and make friends.
Furthermore, I have also made sure to prioritize self-care. I have learned to recognize the warning signs of my depression and take steps to manage it before it becomes overwhelming. I exercise regularly, eat a healthy diet, and make time for activities I enjoy, such as reading and spending time with my pets.
In conclusion, depression can significantly impact one's life, affecting not only academic performance but also social interactions. However, it is essential to remember that everyone has struggles, and we should not judge someone we don't know. With the help of therapy, support groups, and self-care, it is possible to manage depression and regain control of one's life. Even though I inherited depression from my mother, it will not stop me from pursuing my dream as a vet. I am determined to overcome the challenges I face and positively impact the world of animal welfare.
Ray W Bausick Green Industry Memorial Scholarship
The green industry has become increasingly vital today. Climate change, pollution, and resource depletion are all major environmental challenges that demand immediate action. As a result, I have decided to make a positive impact in the green industry, and in this essay, I will outline my plan and why I am passionate about this field.
I have always been passionate about the environment and its conservation. As a child, I spent countless hours exploring the forests and rivers near my home, marveling at the beauty and diversity of the natural world. Over time, I came to understand the critical role that the environment plays in our lives, providing us with clean air, water, food, and the raw materials needed for many of our daily activities.
This passion for the environment led me to pursue a degree in environmental science. During my studies, I learned about the many environmental challenges facing our planet and the need for individuals, businesses, and governments to take action. I also learned about the various green industries, such as renewable energy, sustainable agriculture, and eco-tourism, that offer solutions to these challenges.
My plan to make a positive impact in the green industry is multi-faceted. First and foremost, I intend to use my knowledge and skills to help businesses and organizations become more environmentally sustainable. This might involve conducting environmental assessments, identifying areas of waste and inefficiency, and developing strategies to reduce their environmental impact.
In addition, I plan to work with communities to promote sustainable practices, such as recycling, composting, and energy conservation. This might involve organizing educational events and workshops, working with local governments to develop sustainability policies and programs, and engaging with community members to build support for green initiatives.
Another key part of my plan is to promote renewable energy and other green technologies. This might involve working with renewable energy companies to help them develop and market their products or working with governments and other organizations to promote the adoption of these technologies. I am particularly excited about the potential of solar and wind power to transform our energy systems and reduce our dependence on fossil fuels.
Finally, I plan to use my voice and influence to advocate for policies and practices that promote sustainability and environmental protection. This might involve writing articles and blog posts, speaking at conferences and events, and engaging with policymakers and other influential figures to build support for green initiatives.
I am passionate about the green industry because it offers real solutions to some of the most pressing environmental challenges of our time. By promoting sustainability, renewable energy, and other green technologies, we can reduce our environmental impact while creating new economic opportunities and improving our quality of life. I am excited to be part of this movement, and I look forward to positively impacting the green industry in the years to come.

As a gay person living in a small, conservative town, life hasn't been easy. Growing up, I knew I was different from the other kids. While they were interested in sports and dating girls, I found myself attracted to other boys. Unfortunately, in my town, being gay was seen as something unnatural and shameful. People talked behind me, and my peers constantly teased and bullied me. As a result of all this negativity, I struggled with my mental health. I felt isolated and alone as if nobody else could understand what I was going through. I started to have panic attacks and anxiety and often cried myself to sleep at night. It wasn't until I met some other gay people online that I began to feel a sense of community and belonging. I found that others like me had gone through the same struggles and who understood what it was like to live in a small, conservative town as a gay person. I began feeling less alone by talking to these people and sharing my experiences. I started to come out of my shell and embrace my true self, even though it was initially difficult. I found that the more I accepted myself, the happier I became. While I still face challenges living in a conservative town, I can now cope more healthily. I have learned to prioritize my mental health and seek support when needed. I hope that one day, others in my town will be able to do the same and that we can create a more accepting and inclusive community for everyone, regardless of their sexual orientation.
Tim Gjoraas Science and Education Scholarship
I have always been passionate about science and its ability to advance our understanding of the world around us. Ever since I was young, I was captivated by the beauty and complexity of scientific exploration, and the inspiring discoveries that can arise from research and experimentation. As I've grown, that passion has only deepened, and it is with this same love for the subject that I examine what makes science so special to me.
I'm passionate about science because of its wonderful and never-ending potential. It is constantly producing new and innovative ideas and solutions to problems. Science advances the knowledge of mankind and can have tangible, positive impacts on the world. The pursuit of knowledge, the ability to solve challenging puzzles, and to understand of the complexities of the universe are all appealing aspects of science. It allows us to ask and answer questions, understand phenomena, and make real and lasting changes. As Albert Einstein said, "The important thing is not to stop questioning; curiosity has its own reason for existing" (The Quotations Page). The power to make a difference drives my passion for science and its limitless opportunities.
Science is an incredible way to gain a better understanding of the world we live in. It has introduced innovative ideas and breakthrough discoveries that have made our lives easier and more enjoyable. From finding treatments for diseases to discovering renewable energy sources, science has been an integral part of human progress for centuries. In addition to its practical applications, studying science can be rewarding and exciting. As a scientific discipline, science is expansive and encompasses many different topics, giving students endless possibilities to explore and expand upon. You can become passionate about science by researching new advances in technology, exploring the mysteries of the natural world, or discovering solutions to global issues. Learning and experimenting with science offers immense satisfaction and is also a great way to spark creativity. Moreover, when we look at the advancements that science has brought to society, it becomes clear why so many people are passionate about this field. (Kelly, 2017).
Scientists often share a passion for science because of the opportunity to understand and solve complex problems that are found both in nature and within human-made systems. Curiosity and a desire to explore the unknown and answer the biggest questions of our times can be major driving forces. The potential to make tangible positive change in society and lead the way to a better future is inspiring to many. Scientists also take a great deal of satisfaction in purely intellectual explorations from the challenges that come from formulating a new hypothesis, interpreting data, and making discoveries and progress. Finally, the collaborative nature of science and the sense of camaraderie that comes from working with others is an important source of enjoyment for many in the scientific community (Davis, 2020).
Dr. Howard Hochman Zoological Scholarship
For most people, including myself, the first question asked is almost impossible to answer. However, I am lucky enough to be able to narrow it down to two main branches for where my love for animals came from. The first branch is my amazing grandmother and her rescue dog. Since my mother was often gone, my grandmother took it upon herself to raise me as best she could. One of the main morals she instilled in me was to not be scared of animals, and to always treat them with respect. Since my grandmother also had to take care of her handicapped son, my uncle Aaron, I was often left to entertain myself. That was where Silver, my grandmother's rescue, came in.
For reasons still unknown to my family, that dog loved me unconditionally. This would be normal, if not for the fact that she was aggressive to everyone else with few exceptions. This dog would make sure I stayed out of trouble and even helped me learn how to walk by letting me hold onto her fur as she stood. In the end, my father forced my grandmother to put Silver down after she tried to bite him on the day. Though I understand his position on the matter, a large part of my heart will never forgive him for that.
The second branch would be the YouTube channel, Snake Discovery. Even though my grandma taught me to love and respect animals, I still had trouble with the "creepy crawlies" in our world. One day while scrolling through my YouTube recommendations, I stumbled upon their YouTube channel. Snake Discovery's mission is to educate the public about reptiles, and other non-furry animals. They taught me so many things, but the main thing that stuck with me was that those "creepy crawlies" were not so creepy after all. Eventually, I found that society gives those poor creatures a bad reputation. I found a love for those animals and started wanting to help them.
Not only is climate change affecting these animals, but humanity's ignorance and greed toward them deeply affect their captive population. Large companies such as PetSmart and Petco, often sell these animals. This would be fine if they actually told their customers how to properly care for them. So many shelters have surrendered animals with limbs missing or worse. This disgusts me to my very core. I have seen this up close many times. One of my close friends has rescued many of these surrendered animals. He has had cases of abuse, missing toes, and various stages of MBD.
When I become a vet I want to educate people about these tragedies. By becoming a vet, I will dedicate my life to animals and their care. I plan to eventually start an organization that resembles PETA, just without mass euthanasia, misinformation, and overall hypocrisy. I know this is a big goal to accomplish, but I am taking this one step at a time. I have the drive and know how to do great things for earth's creatures. all I need is the means. No amount of help is too small, because if we don't band together, our world's amazing biodiversity will be destroyed right before our eyes. Humanity as a whole would have to live with the guilt of what we have done. That is, of course, if there are any people left to mourn that devastating loss.
Your Dream Music Scholarship
I don't even have to think twice about this answer. The song that's message reaches me the most is, I'm Gonna Be a Teenage Idol, by Sir Elton John. I have two main reasons to love that song. First, it brings me closer to my grandfather. He and I have always had so much love and respect for Elton John. Both being musically talented, my grandpa and I draw a lot of inspiration from him and his music. The second, and most significant reason, is because that song always brightens my mood when I hear it. I suffer from clinical depression and anxiety. For the most part, I manage it, but on those awfully tough days, I like to put on that song. Its message about being loved and adored even with life's twists and turns has always made me realize that I can get through whatever the world throws at me. Like Elton, drug addiction, lgbtq+ intolerance, and so on, have been affected by life since before I could walk. If Elton could get through all of that, so can I. Eventually, I did and came out of it, hitting the ground running. I am grateful for Elton and his song. Without it, I would not be where I am today.
MudPuddle’s Veterinary Scholarship
Ever since I was a young child, I have always had an admiration for all animals. And when I say all animals, I mean all animals. No matter how many legs or eyes they had. It honestly is how I was raised. I truly got the best of both worlds when it came to grandmothers on either side of my parent's families. My grandma on my mother's side taught me not to be scared of any animal, and that they all have a place on our planet. My Nana on my father's side taught me to always try to help people and things whenever I could. The combination of those lessons is why I have always wanted to be a vet.
When I say I want to go into larger animals, I think I should be more specific. I want to be a veterinarian for a zoo. I know I probably sound insane, but I have always been kind of an adrenaline junky. I mean this summer, my family and I are taking our final family trip together before I go off to college. My parents allowed me to pick our vacation spot, and I guarantee they regretted their decision almost immediately. I chose to go to Hawaii and go swimming with sharks. (Maybe my grandmother should have taught me to fear some animals.) Overall, I want to help animals in need, but have some excitement along the way, because nothing sounds worse to me than getting bored with your job. Truly that would be my personal hell, and I am a firm believer in living every day like it is your last.
That's not all I want to do with my life. I want to be an advocate for animal rights as well as help out with animal rehabilitation. As a person who grows up around farms, I have seen the living conditions of livestock, and it truly disgusts me. And the livestock treatment I have seen pales in comparison to large farming operations. And who better to advocate for that than a certified DVM?
I know I have a long road ahead of me to reach my goals. And I am well aware that my plans might change in the future. But I do know one thing. I love animals and will become a veterinarian. With that knowledge I receive from my schooling, I will fight for them and their wellness until my last dying breath. I hope that you can be gracious enough to help me along my journey, because one way or another, I am getting to the finish line.

I want all men to weep
Since I was little, I have collected many memories of me getting into trouble with my father. At the time, I thought my life was over every time I got yelled at. But as I got older, I’ve realized my father went easy on me. If I was put in his situation, I would have dropped my child off at the fire station long ago. Jokes aside, though I love my father; he made me into the man I am today. For that I cannot thank him enough. But there is one thing I wish he did was let me weep. I want all men to weep.
Now when mean weep, I don’t mean in an evil super villain kind of way. I truly just want to normalize men's feelings and show their emotions. Now For hundreds of years men have been conditioned to show no emotion. They were raised to be strong leaders, and leaders can’t fall. I am not just talking about sadness. Men are conditioned to show little to no emotion besides joy and anger. Personally I have reached the point where I can stop crying immediately. Simply that is not okay.
The way we can fix this is easier said than done. We just need to teach our future generation of men that their emotions are valid, and it’s okay to express them within reason. But in order to do that, we as humans have to undo hundreds if not thousands of years of brainwashing.
According to a study in UCLA, 80% of all suicides are committed by men. I can vouch for that. For a good chunk of my life I was suicidal. I had no motivation and the world seemed hopeless. Through my spirituality and tons of therapy, I’ve learned to channel these negative emotions and thoughts into something better. I learned it is okay to feel these emotions and not to bottle them up. I became okay with myself and my sexuality. If we started to normalize this throughout the world, think about all the people we can help who are just like me. Or others who are in different situations. Perhaps even the world.
In a world with so many issues this may not seem that important. But think of what it could fix. Out of all the world leaders, every single country that affects the world's negativity is run by men. Men are the main ones that took women’s rights away this last month or so. Men have all the power in the world, but have the emotional mindset of a toddler. Now I don’t know about you but that sounds like a recipe for disaster.
Though the normalization of men’s emotions may not solve all the world’s issues, it can surely help. Thank you for considering me for this scholarship. Blessed be.
