Several experiences and values have influenced my goals and will help me contribute to my community and impact my career in criminology. Specifically, diversity, a service first mentality, and developing grit and determination will help me serve and enrich my community on campus during my college years, and during my criminology career. Diversity and learning about different cultures is important to me. I have grown up learning about my Shinnecock Indian Nation history and culture, while also spending summers in a small, French-speaking village in Quebec with my grandparents. Additionally, I have had the opportunity to spend time visiting my mother’s hometown of Hawaii where I was exposed to many different Asian cultures. This inspired me to take Chinese starting in middle school at Sarasota Military Academy Prep and to continue through high school Chinese 3 Honors. My belief is the more you learn about and experience other cultures, the more diverse your background becomes, and the better you are able to serve your community and understand human nature and how it may relate to criminology. A service-first mentality will also assist me in excelling both as a student and in my career. This is very important to me and is something that was developed by my Catholic faith and reinforced by my years as a Senior Altar Server serving with the Bishop in the Diocese of Venice. I also had an opportunity to make an impact in our local community by keeping both equity-mindedness and a service-first mentality front and center. While helping coach youth lacrosse I noticed we often ran out of “Loaner Equipment” leaving many kids on the sideline not being able to participate. While playing lacrosse for many years, I knew there was used equipment out there in people's garages etc. that could be put to good use. I started “Relax”, a Facebook based lacrosse donation group. People can visit the site, tell me what they have and where they are located. I then arrange to pick up the equipment, clean and inspect it, and provide it to youth lacrosse organizations locally such as Seahawks Lacrosse Club based here in Sarasota. These experiences have reinforced my desire to have a career in service, specifically criminology. Other characteristics I have developed in preparation to be successful are grit and determination. These have been developed throughout my years in team sports such as lacrosse and football. This has been developed both physically and mentally. Physically, by consistently working in extreme physical conditions such as exhaustion and the Florida heat and humidity. Mentally, when continuing to work as a team even in times of difficulty such as playing a more challenging team. In addition, this year I was accepted and attended the United States Coast Guard Academy summer AIM program which continued to develop my grit and determination skills while being challenged in a boot camp-type environment. Both grit and determination supported me during my first season of college football at Salve Regina University and will support me as I begin my first season of college lacrosse. It also helped me be successful during my first semester of college which included criminal justice courses and forensics. I believe the above experiences and values will assist me in pursuing a career where I can serve my country in the way of criminology. I look forward to continuing to develop lifelong connections and memorable experiences that will support me during my time on campus and more broadly during my career.

I will use my educational experience gained in college to pursue social justice and promote diversity, equity, and inclusion on campus and in the world. According to the United Nations, “Social justice is the view that everyone deserves equal economic, political, and social rights and opportunities.” Therefore, promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion will lay the foundation for pursuing social justice. On campus, I hope to continue to expand my horizons and continue my education and be a part of different experiences that I would not have the opportunity to have elsewhere. Diversity and learning about different cultures are important to me. I have grown up learning about my Shinnecock Indian Nation's history and culture, while also spending summers in a small, French-speaking village in Quebec with my grandparents. Additionally, I have had the opportunity to spend time visiting my mother’s hometown in Hawaii where I was exposed to many different Asian cultures. This inspired me to take Chinese starting in middle school and to continue through high school Chinese 3 Honors. My belief is the more you learn about and experience other cultures, the more diverse your background becomes, and the better you can serve your community. At college, I would continue to shape my perspective and identity with diverse experiences, while sharing and bringing my diverse experiences and identity with others. I plan on doing so by being involved in athletics, leadership programming, faith-based groups, and community involvement. After college, I plan on pursuing social justice in the world by applying my MS in administration of justice and homeland security degree to serve my country at the federal law enforcement level promoting equal rights, opportunity, and treatment. At the foundation of this effort, I will continue to promote diversity, equity, and inclusion by being both a peer leader as well as eventually gaining the opportunity to gain an official leadership role. In these roles, I plan on promoting representation in law enforcement. Although more research needs to take place, there have been recent studies such as the one in the journal of Science published in March 2021, that support the theory that representation matters in law enforcement. (https://www.science.org/doi/10.1126/science.abd8694) As we have seen in recent events, there is a great need in law enforcement to pursue social justice which would provide me with an ongoing opportunity to make an impact in this area and the world. In addition to making an impact at the federal level, I plan on continuing to be involved in the community by staying involved with volunteer efforts, including faith-based opportunities. Pursuing social justice will be an essential part of my everyday life both during my time at college and beyond. I hope and plan to make an impact at the local level in my community as well as on a larger scale nationwide, by building a more diverse, equitable, and inclusive world.

I have played lacrosse since the age of 5 years old. While playing this sport, I have learned a lot of things like teamwork, determination, and grit. However, I have also learned compassion and have developed a service-first mentality by witnessing my lacrosse coach exhibit small acts of kindness. The characteristics that I have developed while playing sports and witnessing these small acts of kindness, have influenced me throughout my life as well as my future goals and my desired career. I first witnessed these acts of kindness directly from my lacrosse coach and the head of the lacrosse league I play in. Specifically, he would always bring a trailer full of used lacrosse equipment to practice. He would try to collect this equipment from previous lacrosse players or players who outgrew their equipment and didn’t need it anymore. His goal was to provide equipment for those kids who wanted to try or play lacrosse but couldn’t afford the equipment. In addition to the fee to join the lacrosse league, lacrosse players must buy all their protective equipment which includes shoulder pads, elbow pads, gloves, helmet, mouthguard, lacrosse stick, cleats and uniforms. As you can imagine, this cost can add up pretty quickly. I was always fortunate that my parents were able to provide me with equipment throughout my years of lacrosse as I grew into new sizes, wore out equipment or just wanted a new stick. As I got older, I realized this was not the case for many other kids, some of which didn’t even have cleats. However, my coach always invited those kids to “shop” in the trailer and find some equipment that would work for them so they could participate and play lacrosse. As the years went by, I could see that it was a constant challenge for the coach to keep that trailer filled with donated used or new equipment and I talked to him about a way that I could help. I knew there was used equipment out there in people's garages etc. that could be put to good use. I started “Relax”, a Facebook-based lacrosse donation group. People can visit the site, and tell me what they have and where they are located. I then arrange to pick up the equipment, clean and inspect it, and provide it to the youth lacrosse organization locally to keep that trailer full and kids playing lacrosse. I have been doing this now for a couple of years and continue to promote this service so that more and more people are aware and donate their equipment. I have even had local businesses in the community choose to purchase new equipment and donate it to ReLax. Witnessing my coach exhibit small acts of kindness by trying to provide equipment for players inspired me to do the same which helped me develop a service-first mentality and the understanding that a small act of kindness can have a large impact on someone’s life. A service-first mentality will also assist me in excelling as a student as I look forward to getting involved with service and leadership opportunities available on campus. I hope to join an existing service-based group or create one to serve a need in the community. A service-first mentality has also reinforced my desire to have a career in service. Specifically, I believe the above experience and values will assist me in pursuing a career where I can serve my country. My goal is to pursue a career in a government agency such as the FBI where I can apply my criminal justice degree.

I also look forward to continuing to develop lifelong connections and memorable experiences that will support me during my time on campus and more broadly during my career.

Several experiences and values have influenced my goals and will help me contribute to my community and impact my career. Specifically, diversity, a service-first mentality, and developing grit and determination will help me serve and enrich my community on campus during my college years, and during my career. My belief is the more you learn about and experience other cultures, the more diverse your background becomes, and the better you can serve your community. I started “Relax”, a Facebook-based lacrosse donation group. People can visit the site, and tell me what they have and where they are located. I then arrange to pick up the equipment, clean and inspect it, and provide it to youth lacrosse organizations locally such as Seahawks Lacrosse Club based here in Sarasota. These experiences have reinforced my desire to have a career in service. Both grit and determination will support me through my college years and beyond. I believe the above experiences and values will assist me in pursuing a career where I can serve my country. My goal is to pursue a career in a government agency such as the FBI. I would be honored to have this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to be able to immerse myself in this environment, be mentored by some of the best teachers in my field of interest, and be surrounded by other students with similar goals and aspirations. I look forward to continuing to develop lifelong connections and memorable experiences that will support me during my time on campus and more broadly during my career.
