    Black Students in STEM Scholarship
I'm was a little black boy who the no response was given to many times, no because you can't afford it, no you're too small, no that's not possible, and no because it's out of reach. I'm also a son, brother to 7 siblings, uncle to 7 nieces and nephews, a higher education scholar, a social responsibility advocate, and a disabled veteran. I'm also someone who believes in dreams and with the proper provision to make them a reality. On November 22, 1985, in Jacksonville, FL. to parents Terry and Michelle Rogers, a fifth child was born. Soon after birth, I found myself a victim of parental separation and later followed the divorce. To cope with the depression from the family breakup, I found comfort in music and arts (e.g., drawing, listening to music, and singing). On August 14, 2007, I began my new journey in the U.S. Navy. After working two jobs back to back, Certified Pharmacy Technician at Walgreens from 8 am - 4 pm and Night Auditor at La Quinta Inn from 11 pm - 7 am, something sparked interest for change. Not only for myself but the world, I felt the urgency to do something that would allow me to play a more significant role in a social responsibility mission, and that I did. I served in Illinois, Mississippi, Virginia, Bahrain (overseas - middle east), Hawaii, and California. On February 26, 2015, after serving two consecutive active duty enlistments, I decided it was time to end my active duty honorably and pursue higher education. I attended DeVry University, New York, NY, for a Bachelor of Professional Studies in Business Administration, was awarded a GPA of 3.33/4.0 and graduated December 27, 2017. Degree concentration was Small Business Management & Entrepreneurship. Followed by attendance at Keller Graduate School of Management, New York, NY, for a Master of Business Administration, awarded a GPA of 3.64/4.0 on June 26, 2019. Dual degree concentrations of Project Management and Human Resource Management. Now, dual-enrollment at Keller Graduate School of Management, New York, NY, Master of Information Technology Management with a concentration in Information Security, and Walden University, Minneapolis, MN, with a concentration in Project Management I aim to be a leader in STEM. At birth, we enter into a strange new world full of scary and fascinating things. Regardless of fear, we still set out on a journey of discovery and understanding. Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) is that journey for many of us. Science is studies and observation of structure and behavior in both the physical and natural world. Technology refers to the application of scientific knowledge for practical purposes, especially in industry. Engineering is the application of science and math to solve problems. Mathematics is the abstract science of number, quantity, and space. STEM coursework tends to cross-connect the four subject matters to understand better how each subject corresponds in each field. The many possible opportunities granted to us as a society that STEM offers make me passionate about both STEM and entrepreneurship. As a black disabled veteran who suffers from PTSD, major depression, and anxiety, I rely on STEM students, graduates, and industry experts to continue the trend of innovation to discover or create new technological breakthroughs in medicine and technical assistance. My mother once told me that you make the most significant impact by sitting at the table and not observing outside. My dreams and goals steer toward those things people often say are impossible, but science, technology, engineering, and mathematics have proven people wrong many times.
