Addiction is a formidable foe that can consume one's life. I have experienced the harrowing depths of addiction, relying on alcohol as a coping mechanism during a challenging period in my life. Fortunately, I found solace in sobriety after these trying times, although it is a daily struggle to not take the easy way out, I know firsthand the profound impact addiction can have on those around me, and I refuse to let addiction get in the way of my relationships and life.
During a particularly difficult phase in my life, marked by my parents' divorce, financial struggles, and the consequences of my own mother's meth and alcohol addiction, I found solace in alcohol. What started as a means to numb the pain and temporarily escape reality soon became a daily crutch. Addiction gradually consumed every aspect of my life, alienating loved ones and hindering my personal and academic growth. The illusion of relief that alcohol provided was merely a façade, as it deepened the darkness within me.
A moment of clarity eventually pierced through the haze of addiction, urging me to confront the destructive path I was on. It was a humbling and painful realization that I had lost control over my own life. Determined to regain my autonomy, I embarked on a journey towards sobriety. Seeking help from those around me, I began to open up to my friends about my struggles, finding strength in the company of others who understood the challenges of addiction.
The decision to embrace sobriety marked a turning point in my life. As the grip of addiction loosened, I rediscovered my true self and the potential within me. Sobriety allowed me to rebuild relationships with family and friends, mending the wounds that my addiction had caused. It provided the clarity necessary to pursue personal and academic goals with renewed vigor. With each passing day, I experienced an ever growing sense of gratitude for the gift of sobriety and the opportunities it afforded me.
My personal journey through addiction and recovery has ignited a passion within me to help others facing similar battles. Through my education, I aspire to make a meaningful difference in the lives of individuals struggling with addiction. Equipped with knowledge and understanding gained from my own experience, I envision myself pursuing a career in counseling, specializing in addiction recovery. Drawing upon my personal experience and success to help the lives of others.
I believe education can be a powerful tool in destigmatizing addiction and offering support to those in need. By advocating for evidence-based approaches, raising awareness, and providing empathetic guidance, I hope to assist individuals in reclaiming their lives from the clutches of addiction. I would strive to create safe spaces where individuals can share their stories, seek guidance, and find solace in the journey to recovery, much like I did.
I understand the immense challenges and the overwhelming sense of despair that accompanies addiction, but I also know that recovery is possible and that a brighter future awaits those who are willing to embark on the journey. By sharing my story I aspire to show others that they are not alone, that there is light at the end of the tunnel, and that a fulfilling, sober life is within their reach. I aim to be a testament to the strength of the human spirit, to ignite a spark of hope in those who may feel lost or defeated, and to remind them that they have the power to break free from the chains of addiction and embrace a life filled with purpose.
SmartAsset High School SmartStart Personal Finance Scholarship
Throughout my journey, I have encountered various financial challenges, including my mother's costly battles with addiction, my father's prolonged unemployment, and the strain it has placed on our family's finances. Going from a child who could have almost anything he wanted, to a young adult who became largely responsible for a large amount of his own finances, was a huge shock that required me to change my entire view of finances. Fortunately, in the face of these difficulties, I have received a piece of invaluable financial advice that has shaped my perspective and provided a roadmap for navigating financial stability.
The best piece of financial advice I have received is to prioritize saving and establish an emergency fund. This counsel emphasizes the importance of setting aside a portion of income consistently to build a financial safety net for unexpected expenses or emergencies. It has taught me the significance of disciplined financial planning, preparing for unforeseen circumstances, and maintaining control over my financial well-being. Control that is essential to ensure that my own future children will never have to worry about money in the way I do. Instead it will allow me to accurately teach them about financial stability in a productive way that won’t cause unnecessary stress.
Throughout my college career, I intend to apply this advice by adopting a prudent approach to budgeting and saving. I plan to create a detailed monthly budget that encompasses both essential expenses and a designated amount for savings. By adhering to this budget, I can allocate a portion of my income toward building an emergency fund, which will provide peace of mind and safeguard against unexpected financial challenges that may arise during my college years.
In addition to saving, I aim to seek opportunities for financial growth during my college journey. This includes actively pursuing scholarships, grants, and part-time employment to supplement my finances and reduce reliance on loans. By actively researching and applying for financial aid opportunities, I can minimize the burden of student debt and cultivate a more secure financial foundation for my future. If successful, this process will afford me some leeway to focus on the improvements of my personal finances.
Another crucial aspect of implementing the advice is developing financial literacy. I plan to take advantage of resources available through my college, such as financial literacy workshops and courses, to enhance my understanding of personal finance, investments, and long-term financial planning. Acquiring these skills will empower me to make informed financial decisions, maximize my resources, and position myself for long-term financial success. I will also take advantage of networking on platforms such as LinkedIn to meet and seek advice from people who may not do finances for a living, but have years of experience that I can capitalize on.
As I transition from college to the professional world, I recognize the importance of carrying the lessons learned from this advice into my post-college life. I intend to continue prioritizing saving and maintaining an emergency fund as I enter the workforce. By consistently setting aside a portion of my income, I can protect myself against unexpected setbacks, secure my financial future, and work towards achieving important life goals, such as homeownership or starting a family. Ultimately mitigating my chances of encountering a financial crisis later in my life.
Additionally, I plan to seek the guidance of financial professionals to ensure I make sound investment decisions and navigate complex financial matters. By consulting experts in areas such as retirement planning, tax strategies, and wealth management, I can leverage their knowledge and expertise to optimize my financial portfolio and lay a solid foundation for long-term financial security.
I believe that implementing this advice also entails giving back and inspiring others to develop healthy financial habits. As I establish financial stability and achieve my personal goals, I aspire to share my experiences and knowledge with others, particularly those who have faced similar financial challenges. By volunteering with organizations that promote financial literacy and mentoring young individuals, I can contribute to empowering others to make informed financial decisions and break the cycle of financial instability.
The best piece of financial advice I have received—to prioritize saving and establish an emergency fund—has provided me with a guiding principle for navigating financial stability. Through prudent budgeting, seeking financial growth opportunities, developing financial literacy, and seeking professional guidance, I will surely find the success I desire.
Lauren Czebatul Scholarship
Volunteering has proven to be a powerful catalyst for my personal growth. As an individual who has experienced the financial challenges associated with my mother's struggle with addiction and my father's unemployment, I understand the significance of this scholarship both as a means to alleviate financial burdens and as an opportunity to continue my journey of personal development. Through my involvement in various volunteering activities, including running a blood drive, organizing a model UN conference, coordinating a field day, and spearheading a clothing drive, I have witnessed firsthand the impact that giving back to the community can have on one's mindset and sense of purpose.

These experiences have allowed me to mentor and guide young individuals, nurturing their confidence and helping them recognize their potential. Witnessing their growth and seeing the impact of my guidance has not only reinforced my commitment to community service but has also instilled a sense of fulfillment within myself.
My mother's battle with addiction has been financially devastating for our family. The tens of thousands of dollars spent on various treatment programs that yielded no lasting results have left us in a state of near destitution. The financial strain has made it increasingly difficult for us to meet basic needs and pursue opportunities for personal and academic growth. This scholarship would alleviate the burden we face, providing me with the means to pursue higher education and contribute positively to society.
On top of the financial difficulties caused by my mother's situation, my father has been unemployed for over a year. His physical struggles, coupled with the challenging job market, have made it incredibly challenging for him to secure stable employment. The lack of a steady income has further exacerbated our financial hardships, making it imperative for me to seek external support through scholarships to pursue my educational goals.
Despite the adversities we face, I remain steadfast in my commitment to education and community service. This scholarship would not only provide much-needed financial support but also enable me to continue my academic journey, expand my knowledge, and equip myself with the necessary skills to make a positive impact on society. With a higher education, I aim to contribute to addressing the societal challenges related to addiction, unemployment, and poverty, and create a brighter future for my family and community.
This scholarship holds immense significance, providing financial relief and offering the opportunity to pursue my educational goals. By investing in my education, this scholarship will not only impact my life but also empower me to positively influence the lives of others, creating a ripple effect of change and hope in our community in the process.
Cariloop’s Caregiver Scholarship
Being thrust into the role of a caregiver for my father, who struggles with physical limitations due to failed back surgeries, has instilled in me infallible tools that will carry me through the rest of my life. Through assisting him with daily tasks, I have discovered a profound empathy, empathy I intent to make full use of in order to better our world.
In assuming the role of my father's caregiver, I have been tasked with helping him perform activities of daily living that he can no longer manage independently. These responsibilities have included assisting him out of bed, dressing him, and undertaking various other tasks he is unable to perform. This realization has provided me with a newfound confidence in my ability to navigate the challenges that lie ahead, both in my personal life and as I embark on my college journey.
My caregiving experience has significantly influenced my personal goals, shaping my aspirations for the future. Witnessing my father's journey through failed surgeries has given me a desire to make a difference in the lives of those facing physical limitations. As a result, I have set my sights on pursuing a career that will give me the resources I need with the aim of helping others overcome their own obstacles and improving their quality of life.

By assuming the role of a caregiver for my father, I have developed a passion for making a meaningful difference in the lives of others. Kiaan Patel Scholarship
As I sit down to write this essay, I am filled with a sense of anticipation. In just a few short months, I will be attending the University of Colorado Boulder, pursuing a degree in information science. My journey to this point has been filled with challenges and obstacles, but I am proud of the person I have become and excited about the future.
When I reflect on my past, I am reminded of the struggles I faced as a child. Growing up in a well off household that almost lost everything, I quickly learned the value of hard work and perseverance. I saw firsthand how difficult it was for my parents to make ends meet following their separation and loss of a job, and I knew that I wanted to make a better life for myself and my future family.
As a freshman in high school, I struggled academically. I was unfocused and lacked direction, unsure of what I wanted to do with my life. But over time, I realized that if I wanted to achieve my goals, I needed to take my education seriously. I worked hard to improve my grades, and I am proud to say that I have made vast improvements since freshman year. I now take various college-level courses that I excel in, and I am a quick learner, always eager to take on new challenges.
In addition to my academic achievements, I also work a part-time job. Working has taught me the value of responsibility and dedication. I have learned how to balance work and school, and I have developed a strong work ethic that I know will serve me well in the future.
As I think about my future career, I am motivated by my desire to make a positive impact on the world. I want to use my skills and knowledge to help others and make a difference in the lives of those around me. My goals are driven by my childhood struggles and the desire to ensure that my children never have to face the same challenges that I did.
Information science is a field that I am particularly interested in because of its potential to improve people's lives. In today's world, information is more accessible than ever before, but it's not always easy to find what you're looking for. As an information scientist, I hope to develop tools and technologies that make it easier for people to access the information they need. I believe that by doing so, I can help to level the playing field and give everyone an equal opportunity to succeed.
In addition to my career aspirations, I also plan to make a positive impact on the world through my personal life. I believe that small acts of kindness and generosity can have a significant impact, and I strive to make a difference in the lives of those around me. Whether it's volunteering at a local shelter or simply being there for a friend in need, I know that even the smallest actions can make a big difference.
I am extremely excited about the opportunities that the future holds. I am proud of the person I have become and the progress I have made in my academic and personal life. As I prepare to embark on this next chapter, I am driven by my desire to make a positive impact on the world. I know that the road ahead will not be easy, but I am confident in my ability to succeed and achieve my goals.
Elevate Mental Health Awareness Scholarship
As I look back on my high school experience, I am reminded of the challenges I faced and how they influenced me as an individual. Mental health, in particular, played a significant role in my life, and the past year has been especially difficult for me.
My mother's struggle with alcoholism has been a source of stress and worry for me for as long as I can remember. Her addiction has not only affected her health but also our family's dynamic, creating a strain that has only grown stronger over time. To make matters worse, my father's narcissism has made it even harder for us to work through our problems and find solutions. I felt as though I was carrying the weight of my family's problems on my shoulders, and this had a significant impact on my mental health.
In addition to my family's issues, I was also dealing with the stress of playing football, managing a heavy course load, and thinking about my future. As a senior in high school, I felt a tremendous amount of pressure to succeed and make something of myself. The weight of these expectations was overwhelming at times, and it showed in the form of anxiety that caused me to lose 25 pounds within a couple of months.
Despite the challenges I faced, I knew that I couldn't let them control me. I took the initiative to seek help, and talking to my closest friends has been one of the most significant steps I have taken to improve my mental health. I learned that it's okay to ask for help and that there is no shame in admitting that you need assistance.
I also learned that communication is key in any relationship, especially when it comes to family. Although it wasn't easy, I opened up to my parents about how I was feeling and the impact their actions were having on me. It wasn't a perfect conversation, and it didn't solve all of our problems, but it was a necessary step towards healing and improving our relationship.
One of the most significant changes that I experienced as a result of these challenges was a shift in my priorities. I realized that my career aspirations were not just about achieving success and making money; they were about finding a sense of purpose and making a positive impact on the world. I became more focused on my studies and my future, using my struggles as motivation to work harder and smarter. All to ensure that my kids in the future will never feel the way I have felt.
I also became more aware of the importance of self-care and taking care of my mental health. I started to prioritize exercise, eating well, and getting enough sleep, all of which helped me to feel more balanced and less anxious. I learned that taking care of myself was not a luxury but a necessity, and that prioritizing my mental health was the key to my success.
Now, as I prepare to embark on my next journey at the University of Colorado Boulder, I am confident in the person I have become. I have faced significant challenges and come out on the other side stronger and more resilient. My experiences have taught me the importance of perseverance, hard work, and self-care. They have also taught me that it's okay to ask for help and that communication and honesty are essential in any relationship.
Looking forward, I am excited to continue to grow and learn as a person. I know that the road ahead will not be easy, but I am confident in my ability to overcome any obstacle that comes my way. I am excited to pursue my career aspirations and make a positive impact on the world, and I know that I will stop at nothing to achieve my goals.
My experience with mental health has been both challenging and transformative. Through it all, I have learned valuable lessons about myself, my relationships, and my priorities. I am proud of the person I have become and excited for what the future holds.
Donald A. Baker Foundation Scholarship
As a male high school senior preparing for college, I have had the opportunity to encounter numerous role models throughout my life. While each one of them has contributed in a unique way to my personal and academic growth, one individual stands out among them all – my grandfather.
My grandfather has been an inspiration to me for as long as I can remember. Born into a large family of modest means, he had to work hard from a young age to provide for himself and his siblings. Despite the many obstacles he faced, he was able to rise above his circumstances and become a successful businessman. As a child, I was always in awe of his accomplishments, and as I grew older, I began to appreciate the personal qualities that had enabled him to achieve so much.
One of the most admirable qualities my grandfather possesses is his determination. He is a man who does not give up easily. He often takes on tasks that seem impossible and makes them happen. Whether it was joining the FBI or overcoming a personal challenge, he was always able to push himself beyond what he thought was possible. I have learned from him that persistence is a key ingredient for success and that even when things seem impossible, there is always a way forward.
Another quality that I admire in my grandfather is his resilience. He has had to weather many storms throughout his life, but he has always emerged stronger on the other side. He has taught me that setbacks are a natural part of life, but what matters most is how we respond to them. Rather than letting adversity get the best of him, he has always used it as an opportunity to grow and learn.
My grandfather has also shown me the importance of compassion. Despite his many accomplishments, he has never forgotten where he came from. He is always ready to lend a helping hand to those in need, whether it is a family member or a stranger. He has taught me that success is not just about achieving personal goals, but also about making a positive impact on the lives of others.
My grandfather has been the most influential role model in my life. His determination, resilience, and compassion have inspired me to work hard and strive for success, while also maintaining a sense of humility and compassion towards others. As I prepare to embark on the next chapter of my life in college, I know that I will carry these values with me, thanks to the guidance and inspiration of my grandfather.
Wellness Warriors Scholarship
managing personal wellness while attending school can be a challenge. However, it is essential to prioritize self-care to succeed academically and maintain a healthy overall lifestyle. There are several ways I manage my wellness while attending school.
One of the most important aspects of personal wellness is getting enough sleep. I make sure to prioritize sleep by establishing a consistent bedtime and wake-up time each day. This helps me to feel well-rested and more focused during the school day. Getting enough sleep also helps to improve my overall mood and energy levels, which can have a positive impact on my academic performance.
Another way I manage my wellness is through exercise. I make it a point to engage in physical activity at least three times a week. Whether it is going for a run, practicing yoga, or attending a fitness class, exercise helps to reduce stress and boost endorphins, which can help to improve mood and mental clarity. In addition, exercise has been shown to improve cognitive function, memory, and academic performance.
Healthy eating habits also play a significant role in personal wellness. I make sure to incorporate nutritious foods into my daily diet, such as fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins. Eating a balanced diet can help to improve energy levels and concentration, which can have a positive impact on academic performance. Additionally, avoiding processed and sugary foods can help to reduce inflammation and improve overall health.
Mental health is another crucial aspect of personal wellness. I make it a priority to practice stress-reducing techniques, such as deep breathing, meditation, and journaling. Engaging in these practices can help to improve mental clarity, reduce anxiety and depression symptoms, and improve overall well-being. Seeking support from a mental health professional is also an option for those who may be struggling with their mental health.
Maintaining personal wellness helps me to succeed as a student in several ways. Firstly, it helps to reduce stress and anxiety, which can negatively impact academic performance. By prioritizing self-care, I am better equipped to handle academic challenges and can approach them with a clearer and more focused mind. Additionally, maintaining personal wellness helps to improve energy levels and mental clarity, which can improve memory and cognitive function. This can have a positive impact on academic performance and make it easier to retain information.
Overall, managing personal wellness while attending school is essential for academic success and overall well-being. Prioritizing sleep, exercise, healthy eating habits, and mental health can have a positive impact on academic performance and improve the overall quality of life. By taking care of themselves, students can approach academic challenges with a clearer and more focused mind, which can lead to greater success and achievement.

Additionally, all of these careers are in high demand, which means that there will be many opportunities for growth and advancement in the field.
JADED Recovery Scholarship
Growing up with an alcoholic mother has been a struggle that I wouldn't wish on anyone. My mother has always been a heavy drinker, and it has caused so much pain and turmoil in our family. When I was younger, I didn't really understand what was going on. All I knew was that my mom would act differently when she was drinking. This caused the breaking apart of my family, and it was one of the most traumatic experiences I have ever had to go through. My mother's addiction caused a lot of pain and suffering, not only for herself but also for my father and me. It was a constant struggle to try and make her stop drinking, but it was as if nothing could ever help her.
As a result, my beliefs about alcoholism and addiction have completely changed. Before, I thought that it was something that people could easily overcome if they just put their minds to it. However, after seeing what my mother went through and how it affected our family, I now understand that addiction is a complex issue that requires a lot of support and understanding.
My relationships were also affected by my mother's addiction. Growing up, I felt like I was always walking on eggshells, never knowing when my mother would have an outburst or start drinking again. It was a very stressful environment to live in, and I found it hard to trust others or form meaningful relationships.
However, as I got older, I realized that there were people out there who cared about me and who I could trust. I started opening up to friends and family, and I found that talking about my experiences helped me process and heal from the trauma.
As for my career aspirations, my experiences have motivated me to pursue a career in social work. I want to be able to help people who are going through similar experiences as my family did, and I want to be able to provide them with the support and understanding that my family and I were lacking.
Despite the pain and suffering that my family and I went through, I have learned to find hope and inspiration in our experiences. I have learned that it is possible to overcome even the most difficult challenges in life, and that there is always a way forward. My experiences have shaped me into the person I am today, and they have motivated me to work towards a better future for myself and others.
Ethel Hayes Destigmatization of Mental Health Scholarship
Losing my uncle to suicide was an experience that changed me forever. It made me realize how precious life is and how important it is to take care of one's mental health. Before my uncle's passing, I had never really thought about mental health or the impact it could have on someone's life. But after his death, I began to see the world differently and became passionate about mental health advocacy.
My uncle's suicide was a wake-up call for me. I started to reflect on my own mental health and the mental health of those around me. I realized that I had struggled with anxiety and depression in the past, and that it was important for me to take care of my own mental health. I started to prioritize self-care and began seeing a therapist. Through therapy, I learned coping mechanisms and strategies to manage my anxiety and depression.
In addition to taking care of myself, I became passionate about mental health advocacy. I joined a mental health awareness club at my school and volunteered at a local crisis center. Through my experiences, I learned that mental health is just as important as physical health and that there is still a lot of work to be done to reduce the stigma surrounding mental illness.
My experience with mental health advocacy has also influenced my future goals. I plan to pursue a career in psychology or mental health counseling so that I can help others who are struggling with their mental health. I want to be a voice for those who feel like they don't have one and help break down the barriers surrounding mental illness.
My uncle's death also taught me the importance of relationships. After his passing, I realized how much I valued the people in my life and how much I relied on them for support. I made a conscious effort to strengthen my relationships with my family and friends and to be there for them when they needed me. I learned that having a strong support system is essential for mental health and well-being.
Overall, my experience with mental health advocacy has shaped my goals, relationships, and understanding of the world. It has taught me the importance of taking care of oneself, advocating for others, and valuing the relationships in one's life. I will continue to work towards reducing the stigma surrounding mental illness and helping those who are struggling with their mental health.
Lyndsey Scott Coding+ Scholarship

For example, I would like to develop software that can help people with disabilities, or create algorithms that can analyze large amounts of data to detect patterns in healthcare or environmental issues. I believe that computer science can be a powerful tool for positive change, and I am excited about the possibilities for making a real impact through this field.
Outside of computer science, I have other goals and interests that I hope to pursue in the future. I am passionate about environmental issues and sustainability, and I hope to be able to contribute to efforts to reduce pollution and protect natural resources. I am also interested in music and the arts, and I hope to continue to develop my skills in playing guitar and writing songs.

In terms of music, I could use technology to create innovative ways to learn and teach music. For example, I could develop interactive music apps or online courses that use gamification and data analysis to help people learn to play an instrument. I could also work on projects that use artificial intelligence to analyze and generate music.
I have both computer science and non-computer science goals that I hope to pursue in the future. I believe that these goals are not mutually exclusive and can be combined to create innovative solutions that can benefit society. I am excited about the possibilities for using technology to promote sustainability, as well as for using technology to innovate in fields like music and the arts. I look forward to continuing to develop my skills and knowledge in these areas and to contribute to the development of a better and more sustainable future.

The quest to understand the nature of our universe has been a driving force behind human curiosity and scientific inquiry for centuries. From the ancient Greek philosophers to modern-day physicists, humans have been searching for answers to questions about the universe and our place in it. I believe that it is essential for us to continue this pursuit of knowledge because it not only satisfies our innate curiosity but also has practical applications that can improve our lives and the world we live in.
It is important to understand the nature of our universe is that it helps us gain a better understanding of the world we live in. For example, understanding the laws of physics can help us build better bridges, develop more efficient technologies, and create more accurate weather predictions. Additionally, studying the universe can help us learn about the origins of life and the universe itself, which can help us better understand our place in the cosmos and our responsibility to preserve it.
Another reason why understanding the universe is important is that it can inspire us to achieve great things. The study of astronomy and cosmology has led to some of the most remarkable scientific breakthroughs in history, such as the discovery of planets beyond our solar system, the detection of gravitational waves, and the mapping of the cosmic microwave background radiation. These discoveries not only expand our knowledge but also inspire future generations to explore the unknown and push the boundaries of what we thought was possible.
To better understand the universe, we must employ a variety of ideas and concepts. One of the most important concepts is the scientific method, which involves making observations, forming hypotheses, and testing those hypotheses through experiments and observations. This method has proven to be effective in advancing our understanding of the universe and is the foundation of modern science.
Another important idea is the concept of Occam's razor, which states that the simplest explanation for a phenomenon is often the best. This principle is particularly relevant in the study of the universe, where there are often multiple explanations for a given phenomenon. By applying Occam's razor, we can eliminate unnecessary assumptions and arrive at a clearer understanding of the universe.
One of the most exciting areas of research in cosmology is the study of dark matter and dark energy. These mysterious substances make up a significant portion of the universe, yet we know very little about them. By studying their effects on the cosmos, we can better understand their properties and potentially uncover new physics that could revolutionize our understanding of the universe.
Another important concept in the study of the universe is the principle of symmetry. This principle states that certain physical laws are the same regardless of the direction in which they are observed. For example, the laws of physics are the same whether we observe them moving forward or backward in time. This principle has important implications for our understanding of the early universe, as it suggests that the laws of physics were the same at the beginning of the universe as they are today.
I also believe that the concept of interdisciplinarity is essential in the study of the universe. The universe is a complex system that involves physics, chemistry, biology, and many other disciplines. By working together, scientists from different fields can collaborate and share ideas to create a more complete understanding of the universe. This approach has already led to some of the most significant discoveries in modern cosmology and will continue to be essential in the future.
In conclusion, I believe that it is essential that we continue to work towards a better understanding of the nature of our universe. Not only does this pursuit satisfy our innate curiosity, but it also has practical applications that can improve our lives and the world we live in. By employing a variety of concepts and ideas, we can continue to uncover the mysteries of the cosmos and inspire future generations to explore the unknown.

The first time I ever met the Monster was shortly after I had moved to Colorado. It was a grotesque thing, with long hair, short build, and very skinny. An almost mirror image of me at the time. It came to me in the dark of the night, preying on my lonesomeness and insecurity. The meeting was brief. It voiced aloud all my worries, all the worries associated with moving somewhere new. It told me I was doomed to forever be alone. The kids at school think I’m a weirdo, undeserving of their time or attention.
And then the Monster left.
For a time life became blissful. I found the Monster to be a liar and quickly settled down to life in a new environment. I realized that maybe the Monster was just a coalition of stress from moving. I was wrong. My second meeting with the Monster happened freshman year of high school. The Monster arrived differently this time. It had two faces, eerily similar to the faces of my parents. It had a large crack down the torso, the side that looked like my mother, holding a bottle. The side of my father, masked in an aura of anger. I knew what to expect this time, distant memories of our first meeting gave me time to prepare myself for the barrage of malice that was to come. But the Monster knew how to hurt me the most. It blamed me for everything wrong in my life. The monster left much like the first time. It left a boy broken and lost, not knowing what he could do to put his life back together.
My worries ebbed away as I fell into a cycle of online school, sports, and the gym. The habitual schedule seemed to keep the Monster from visiting. Unfortunately, life wasn’t done giving me it's worse yet. The Monster came for a third time the summer before my senior year. It took on a form of darkness, and it encompassed my entirety. The Monster embodied everything that had been going wrong in my life, it knew the thoughts and emotions that I had put aside in order to revel in the small successes in my life. Successes I built upon to gain confidence that I was worthy to achieve my ambitions. It tore through that confidence by capitalizing on my greatest insecurities yet again. I thought I could tough it out, it would only be for a night, and I could find a semblance of normalcy again.
Yet I was afforded no reprieve.
I needed to find something to end this incredibly long meeting with the Monster. Weeks under the constant pressure of the Monster gave me the time I needed to find a solution. I began to look at all I had done in my life. Even through the various meetings I had with the Monster I maintained stellar grades, and I was consistent with improving my physical abilities. These various wins in my life became a focal point. I began to coalesce my memory to find the positives in my life, and I noticed a trend. Everything that I had achieved in my life came as a result of my own effort. I was the change needed to find success. To finally put an end to the Monster once and for all, I would need to change myself. I chose acceptance. I accepted that the Monster wasn’t a hindrance in my life. It was nothing but my own fear coming to life, and fear is something that I could overcome.
And the Monster left.

I believe in outlook. Many times life has beaten me down. Many times I felt it wasn’t worth it to get back up from these beatings. Yet against my naive judgment, I continued on, and as a result I grew as a person. The single greatest factor that would pull me out of my cesspool of self pity was my outlook. I would change how I viewed the terrible major events in my life, and it gave me a new drive to forge on ahead.
Freshman year of high school my grades were really struggling. Natural intelligence had carried me through my younger years and I believed it would continue to do so as I took the next big step in my life. I was very wrong, I barely passed my tests, and had an insane amount of missing homeworks. This was due to my terrible outlook on life at the time. I strongly believed that since it was freshman year, my grades wouldn’t matter. I devoted my time to the frugal entertainments and joys that never actually benefited me. I continued like this until I saw my final grades and GPA. It was a huge reality check that this was real, and if I wanted to continue my education outside of high school, then I would need to change. This simple change in outlook on the importance of my grades and study habits was the beginning of years of academic success.
I began to set aside time for homework. Whenever I was bored, rather than starting a new show, I would do school assignments. In a way, doing this left me much more fulfilled than any fleeting form of entertainment I had. I began to see the results of my labor. Class by class my grades shot up. Semester by semester my GPA improved. Year by year I felt as if I deserved to call myself intelligent, and in conjunction my confidence in academics increased. Yet, my high school transcript was still marred by the outlook on academics that I had as a freshman. A permanent scar on my otherwise impressive list of accomplishments. It was and will continue to be a bitter feeling, but even my outlook on this time in my life has changed. Instead of viewing the time with anger and annoyance like I once did, I simply view it as a necessary time required for me to grow into an outstanding and driven student. This outlook saves me many painful nights of regrets, and helps me to not feel quite so hopeless that I ruined my chances for a post secondary education.
Your outlook decides your actions. A negative outlook will drain your drive to improve. Conversely, a positive outlook will give you the fuel you need to grind out that assigned reading for the night. When life beats you down, take a minute to reflect on your experiences, and search for the good things in those experiences, focus on them, and you will find success. This I believe

Growing up with an alcoholic mother and a father who lost everything due to Covid was not easy for me. It was hard to see my mother struggle with alcohol addiction, and it was equally painful to watch my father lose everything he worked so hard for. However, these experiences have motivated me to have high ambitions and work hard to achieve my goals.
Watching my mother struggle with alcohol addiction made me realize the importance of taking care of my own mental health. I learned to cope with my emotions and focus on my studies to distract myself from the chaos at home. It also taught me the importance of resilience and perseverance in the face of adversity.
My father losing his job led to a financial crisis in our family, and we are currently struggling to make ends meet. It’s very challenging, but it made me realize the importance of education and having a stable career. I decided to take control of my future and worked hard in school to secure a bright future for myself.
My experiences have motivated me to have high ambitions and strive for success in my life. I plan to attend college and pursue a career in information science. I have a keen interest in information technology and sciences, and I want to combine that with working with people. This degree does this and will allow me to better the lives of others through the use of technology.
While I want to achieve my own success, I also plan to give back to my community. I want to help those who have faced similar struggles as me and give them hope for a brighter future. I plan to volunteer at organizations that help people with addiction and mental health issues, and provide them with resources to overcome their challenges.
Furthermore, I plan to start a scholarship program for students who have faced similar struggles as me. I know firsthand the importance of education and how it can be a way out of difficult situations. I want to help others achieve their dreams and create a brighter future for themselves.

Richard Neumann Scholarship
As a high school student, I have always been passionate about environmental issues, and one problem that has always bothered me is the excessive use of plastic water bottles. Not only do they contribute to environmental pollution, but they are also expensive for students and their families to continuously purchase. To address this problem, I created a solution that not only helped reduce plastic waste but also provided access to clean drinking water.
The solution I came up with was a refillable water bottle program for my school. I worked with the school administration and the student council to introduce the program, which involved selling durable, reusable water bottles at an affordable price and installing water refill stations around the school. By doing this, students would be able to fill up their water bottles with clean drinking water for free, rather than purchasing plastic water bottles.
To create the refillable water bottle program, I researched different types of water bottles and water refill stations that were available and came up with a budget and plan to present to the school administration. I also created promotional materials to raise awareness about the program and encourage students to participate. The program was a success, with many students purchasing the refillable water bottles and using the refill stations regularly. It not only helped reduce plastic waste in the school but also provided a more affordable and sustainable option for students and their families.
If I had the necessary resources, I would solve another problem related to transportation for students who live far away from the school. In many cases, students who live far away from the school have to rely on public transportation, which can be expensive and time-consuming. My solution would be to create a carpool program for students who live in the same area, which would not only help reduce transportation costs but also help reduce carbon emissions from multiple vehicles.
To create the carpool program, I would start by creating a survey to gauge interest from students who live in the same area and identify potential drivers who are willing to participate in the program. I would then work with the school administration to create a carpooling policy that ensures the safety and well-being of the students participating in the program. Additionally, I would create a database that would match students with potential carpooling partners based on their location and schedule.
To promote the carpool program, I would create promotional materials that would be displayed around the school and distributed to students. I would also work with the student council to organize events and activities that would encourage students to participate in the program. With the necessary resources, I believe that creating a carpool program would not only help reduce transportation costs but also help promote sustainability and community among students who live in the same area.
