Education has always been a crucial part of my journey, providing me with opportunities to grow and pursue my passions. For as long as I can remember, attending law school has been my goal. The constant learning and growth that come with education are aspects I am incredibly passionate about. This pursuit of knowledge has already begun to change my path forward in life, and I believe that with further education, I will be able to give back to society in meaningful ways.
In high school, I was accepted into a law practicum internship where my teacher, an experienced public defense attorney, inspired me to consider law as a career. This experience, combined with my involvement in the mock trial team, helped me realize that the law could be a powerful outlet for creativity. It also highlighted the importance of storytelling in the legal profession, a realization that resonated deeply with me as an analytical thinker.
My transition to college further reinforced my commitment to law. Although commuting to school made me feel like an imposter on campus, I persisted in looking for opportunities to gain practical experience. I landed a paid internship at an immigration law firm as a full-time freshman. This internship was transformative, largely due to my mentor who showed me that law is not just about rules and regulations, but about telling people's stories and advocating for those who need it most.
Balancing my education with real-world responsibilities has been a significant part of my journey. I interned at the law firm while being a full-time student, managing a rigorous schedule that involved school, work, and weekends spent as a server to fund my degree. This experience taught me the importance of time management, perseverance, and hard work. Despite the demanding schedule, I remained committed to my education and professional development.
However, the financial burdens of balancing work, school, and my internship have been incredibly demanding. Receiving this scholarship would alleviate these financial pressures, allowing me to dedicate more time to my schoolwork and further develop my skills and knowledge in law. It would enable me to focus on my education without the constant worry of making ends meet, and allow me to return to my internship, which I loved, instead of working weekends as a server.
Education will change my path forward by equipping me with the knowledge and skills needed to become a competent and compassionate lawyer. With a solid legal education, I will be able to advocate for individuals from similar backgrounds, contributing to the success and empowerment of communities facing significant challenges. My personal experiences, work ethic, and passion for storytelling have inspired my pursuit of a career in law.
In the future, I plan to give back to society by using my legal education to provide assistance to those who may not have the means to access it otherwise. I hope to be a voice for the voiceless, representing and supporting those who face injustices. This scholarship would be a significant step towards achieving these goals, enabling me to focus more on my education and reduce financial stress, thus making the most of this opportunity to positively impact the legal profession and the broader community.
Once Upon a #BookTok Scholarship
When I first joined TikTok, I expected to encounter popular trends and light-hearted content. However, I soon discovered a different side of the platform. Initially, the focus seemed to be on romance novels, but as I delved deeper, I stumbled upon a niche that resonated with me profoundly: political theory. This discovery transformed my perspective on life and ignited new passions.
I discovered authors like Angela Davis, Bell Hooks, and Frantz Fanon. These authors and their works are part of my ideal bookshelf. Their writings have significantly influenced my understanding of social justice, feminism, and the complexities of human behavior.
One of the most impactful books I discovered was Angela Davis's "Women, Race, & Class." This book opened my eyes to the intersections of gender, race, and class, and how these factors shape our society. Davis’s powerful arguments and historical analysis provided me with a comprehensive understanding of the systemic issues that continue to affect marginalized communities. Her work inspired me to think critically about the world around me and to advocate for social change.
Similarly, bell hooks' "The Will to Change: Men, Masculinity, and Love" had a profound effect on me. Growing up with a troubled relationship with my father, this book helped me empathize with him and understand the impact of patriarchy on men. Hooks' exploration of how societal expectations shape men's behavior and emotions gave me a new perspective on masculinity. It taught me about virtues and values and emphasized the importance of emotional honesty and vulnerability.
Frantz Fanon's "The Wretched of the Earth" was another transformative read. Fanon’s exploration of colonialism and its psychological effects on both the colonized and the colonizer provided me with a deeper understanding of historical and contemporary struggles for liberation. His passionate call for decolonization and empowerment resonated with me, fueling my desire to contribute to social justice movements.
Had it not been for BookTok and the platform, I might never have encountered these transformative works. These books have not only expanded my intellectual horizons but also helped me share my perspectives with others. They have inspired me to engage in meaningful conversations about social justice and to advocate for change in my community.
In conclusion, my ideal bookshelf is filled with works that challenge, educate, and inspire. Angela Davis, bell hooks, and Frantz Fanon have profoundly influenced my worldview and personal growth. The platform's ability to connect me with such impactful literature has been invaluable, and it has shaped me into a more empathetic and informed individual. Without BookTok, I would be a different person today, and my passion for learning and advocating for change would not be as strong.
Phillip Robinson Memorial Scholarship
I want to practice law because I love storytelling. You may think, "Well, there is journalism and other outlets, so why law?" Let me explain. I have always been an analytical thinker. Because of this characteristic the law profession fits perfectly. I never really considered being a lawyer because, coming from a home where paying for school was seen as a waste, being a lawyer seemed outlandish and expensive. The idea of funding college for seven years wasn't even close to a reality.
Then in high school I was accepted into a law practicum internship where my teacher was an incredibly experienced public defense attorney. Imagine a lawyer having full control of a classroom, it was awesome. Not only this, but I joined the mock trial team, and my love for law only grew. The practicum was the beginning of my realization that the law could be a powerful outlet for being creative, which was something I was in need of.
I graduated and was able to attend college. Although I only commuted 20 minutes to school, when on campus I felt like an imposter. I applied to many internships and finally landed one—a paid internship at an immigration law firm as a full-time freshman. The internship was transformative because of the amazing mentor I had. She made me see that there is a fundamental storytelling aspect to being a lawyer. Law can often be seen as dull and repetitive, but I see it as an outlet—an opportunity to be the representative and translator for everyday people. As a lawyer, you get to be the voice for those who need it most, and people place their faith in you to tell their story. I learned that if approached creatively, law can be a beautiful narrative, and this perspective has deeply influenced my passion for the profession.
Balancing my education with real world responsibilities has been a significant part of my journey. I interned at a law firm while being a full-time student. My daily routine involved going from school to the firm and back to school, Monday through Friday, and working as a server on weekends to help fund my degree. This rigorous schedule was challenging but rewarding, teaching me the importance of time management and hard work. Despite the long hours and demanding tasks, I remained committed to my education and professional development.
However, balancing work, school, and my internship has been incredibly demanding. The financial burdens have required me to work full-time, which often doesn't let me prioritize school. Receiving this scholarship would alleviate these financial pressures, allowing me to dedicate more time to my schoolwork. It would allow me to focus on my education without the constant worry of making ends meet. Not only this, but it would allow me to return to my internship in which I received a return offer allowing me to leave my weekend job.
My economic situation has fueled my determination to succeed. I want to use my legal education to advocate for others from similar backgrounds, contributing to the success and empowerment of individuals and communities facing significant challenges. My personal experiences, work ethic, and passion for storytelling have inspired my pursuit of a career in law. This scholarship would significantly help me focus more on my education and reduce financial stress, allowing me to make the most of this opportunity and positively impact the legal profession and community.
