As a proactive student, I excel in leadership, creativity, and communication. However, my greatest strengths are in problem solving, critical thinking, and work ethic. These traits are what made me gravitate more towards engineering than any other major.
At the beginning of my senior year, I signed up for and was accepted into my school’s gifted internship program. My internship coordinator was not able to match me with a sponsoring company, despite my efforts. I was able to find a sponsoring company and create an internship experience for myself.
People aspire to do what they see and I want kids from underserved communities to see opportunities in the renewable energy space. So, I created an eight-week program to introduce 8th graders to the basics of renewable energy. Through this program, students learned about different types of renewable energy work and the role engineers play in sustainability fields. The program will make a difference because it will teach them about the basics of engineering at an early age.
I piloted a program with a group of 15 high school girls and improving the program based on their feedback.
I was able to find a path forward for myself and others when confronted with a challenge. When challenged, I was able to create a solution that included a certificate and real-world learning. More importantly, I will be able to involve others and help them see new opportunities. Whether it is helping an organization package books to distribute to kids in need across the world, I will always put my best foot forward.
As an honors student, my main interests lie in mechanical engineering, aspiring to pursue a career in the automotive industry. However, success does not happen overnight. In order to be successful, not only do you have to work hard, but you need to have clear goals to work toward.
I have many aspirations for myself for college. I plan to take what I learn at Howard and eventually start a business for myself, after earning a graduate degree.
Knowing that I will be taking many math and science-based classes, I will be sure to master problem-solving, technical, and analytical skills. Thus, my goal would be to use these skills in the automotive industry, as a technical expert and leader.
Mechanical engineering graduates are some of the generalists of the engineering world and can be found in a huge range of industries. This is important since I will be majoring in Mechanical Engineering for my undergraduate STEM degree.
I also need to get experience in the auto industry, therefore, I will seek internships while I'm in college. Additionally, I will look to work at a leading automotive company after I graduate and have them collaborate on potential independent research while I am in graduate school.
