I stood there staring at the back of my family’s shiny blue minivan with a rock in my tiny fist. On a bright summer’s day in the year 2010 an extraordinary moment that would steer the rest of my life occurred. The memory to me is a happy one to hear but to my parents, it was a childlike mistake. I can’t perfectly remember the moment but I will explain to the best of my ability what my parents have told me. It was a normal day and my young six-year-old self had grown bored of the ordinary routine. My Dad was at work and my Mom was taking care of my three younger sisters in the house. Me being the oldest sister was on my own to find some entertainment. I made my way out into the front yard where I found my greatest adventure yet. I searched for a sharp pencil-like rock to be my writing utensil. Then I made my way over to my family’s blue minivan. Looking up at the shiny blue paint I took my rock and scratched away at the paint. I scratched and scratched at the back of the car till I was satisfied with my masterpiece. This is one of many destructively beautiful pieces of art I have created. When my parents tell me this story I interpret it a lot differently than they do. They see a mistake that would cost them money to repair but what I see is my young self trying to find her creative outlet. This moment shaped and guided me into the carefree artist that I am today. I like to believe that from that moment on in the time I would not let myself be subjected to the normal, ordinary canvases of life and instead yearn for a new adventure in every step.
Now, being seventeen years old, I take as many art classes as possible. Sitting on the same squeaky bench in the art room of my school, I pick up my pastels and get to work. Every day making discoveries and inventive pieces. Drawing and painting are my favorite pastimes. I have created many pieces of art that I have grown to be proud of and I’m still learning more techniques and trying new mediums every day. I found a love for oil pastels in particular. Using oil pastels lets me be able to control the colors and shape while also being able to be loose and free. I try to create pieces that have a deeper meaning to them and a personal connection. I feel as though I can truly express myself through what I create.
In the future, I hope to one day pursue an art career whether it be in creating art or helping others thrive in their art. I strive to see the beauty in everything and with art, I believe that can be achieved. The history and personal experiences in different pieces interest me and I wish to learn more about the world through other people’s eyes. I started as a little girl who would find beauty in a scratch on a car and now I desire to expand more about my knowledge of art and make a name for myself in the art world.

Using oil pastels lets me be able to control the colors and shape while also being able to be loose and free. Along with creating art, I like to journal and sculpt. When I was little I used to find random objects around my house, stores, and anywhere I could reach and glue them together creating a sculpture of random objects. Now I still do this but instead of randomly hot-gluing objects together I compile them into something I can be proud of. I try to create pieces that have a deeper meaning to them and a personal connection. I feel as though I can truly express myself through what I create.
