Dental Hygiene Basics Scholarship
About 5 years ago, in 2019, I graduated high school. On June 12 2019, the day I started rehearsals for my graduation day, I experienced a weird numbness sensation on the right side of my body that went away within 24 hours. I thought I had slept on the wrong side of the bed, but didn't think much of it. Later that year, I moved to the University of Rhode Island, hoping to pursue a career in the health field, but still undecided.
Nonetheless, around October 2019, I woke up in my twin XL bed without the ability to walk or touch, and I had complete paralysis on the left side of my face. It only took one visit to the hospital to get diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis. Something that would force me to drop out of school and almost give up my college journey. It took me about 2 years to recover through therapy and the support of family and numerous medical professionals.
Regardless, this experience did not stop me from returning to fulfill my dream in the health field, I went back to school as a health science major with the intent of becoming a dental hygienist. During my time out, I had a lot of time to reflect on what I wanted to do with my life I developed a passion for dental health during my time out of school. The reason for this was the lack of dental hygienists in my hometown Providence, RI. The wait time to access these services can be over a year, and some deny health insurance provided by Medicaid.
In 2022 I decided to return to school at the Community College of Rhode Island. I completed all my prerequisites and general education courses with mostly A's in classes such as anatomy, physiology, microbiology, and biomedical chemistry. Which now has me at a 3.54 GPA. I hope one day I can become a Dental Hygiene professor and earn a bachelors degree, where I can focus on community and public health in the dental field.
In addition, a strong foundation in financial literacy is important to my aspirations because, it helps create a budget, track all expenses, and avoid overwhelming financial debt towards graduation. Being financially prepared can help you build towards a successful career and retirement. For this reason, receiving this scholarship would support my journey by allowing me to purchase the necessary supplies such as instrument kits, books, loupes, masks, gloves, and other materials. This fall I started Dental Hygiene school, in complete health, free of any disability or uncomfortable symptoms, and happy life took me through the path it did
