Hello, my name is Joyce Nagbe I'm an undergraduate student at Morgan State pursuing a Nursing Degree. I come from a poor struggling African household. My family came from Liberia, West Africa with not so much but enough to try and send me to school and because of the financial difficulties my family and I through I push myself to focus and always try my best in school. The reason why I plan to pursue a career as a nurse is that I am determined to be the best nurse I can be, be a person of assurance for the patient, be confident in my skills and abilities to help the patient, and most importantly, to be the patient's advocate and champion for their health and well-being during a time when they cannot do it for themselves. As a nurse, you can make a real difference in someone's life. You can offer hope to people, sometimes during the worst time of their life. Nurses often counsel patients and families after a devastating diagnosis, celebrate with them when they receive good news, and become trusted confidantes. Nursing is a good career for a variety of reasons. Some of the top benefits include the ability to make a difference in the lives of others, exciting career advances, and the opportunity to maintain a desirable work-life balance. I am a driven person and wanted to do something which serves a cause to channel why I have chosen this profession. I have chosen this career because I could make an impact on people's lives. I can touch many lives by giving care, affection, and compassion. I love working with other people and knowing that I’m part of a work family. Nurses come together to share their workload in a way that I find encouraging. I would love to be the kind of person who can be counted on by my colleagues, and who has a good support network as part of the job. I am someone who rises to a challenge, who doesn’t quit, and who won’t back down from hardship. If I fail, I try again. I know that nursing is tough, but that toughness is something I admire in others and the profession, and I think I would be ideally suited for a place where I can be challenged. Life is a journey, and an adventure, and nursing provides a place to be a kind of adventurer. There is so much this profession offers, so many different ways to learn and grow, and I look forward to a life of, not just helping people, but exploration. I want to experience the medical field to its fullest, and I believe there is no better first step on that journey than nursing.

Some actions or experiences that I took to serve my local community, state, or the United States to help make a better future would be volunteering my time. I found volunteering is a great way to support your community. My favorite volunteering opportunities would be anywhere from cleaning up the neighborhood to planting a community garden. I live in an area that has a lot of elderly people so I try to check on neighbors and family members, especially those who live alone, are elderly, have health or mobility issues or are caring for children. I even schedule a time to remotely connect with these individuals regularly to let them know they are not alone. My sister works in the medical field so she inspires me a lot so I try to provide support to frontline health workers and first responders. Many health workers are not able to stay at home and are working around the clock, so take on tasks that they don’t have time to do as an expression of gratitude. I learned that it's a great thing to participate in a charity walk or run, volunteer at a local nonprofit, organize a clothing drive, participate in a national giving or remembrance day, and ask for charitable donations instead of birthday or Christmas gifts or even host a fundraising event and donate the money. I believe that it's great to help people paint and repair their homes. Volunteer to clean up trash around a neighborhood or even help to create a mural that depicts the values of your community. It is so great to volunteer my time and effort with one or more of these community services. I like to reach out to a neighbor in need, perform an act of random kindness, mentor children at your local school, serve at a local soup kitchen or food bank, or volunteer at the local animal shelter, rescue group, or humane society. I find it nice when students like us can organize cleaning drives, book drives, community service for old people and tree plantation events in nearby localities, thus taking small steps to achieve the bigger aim. We can also volunteer for such drives as old age homes, orphanages and rehab centers where their assistance is needed.I also believe that Volunteering shows initiative and effort towards things that are important and volunteering for the same is necessary. Making students like me volunteer at orphanages, and old age homes can help benefit our society.
