I want to start my essay with a reflection on the profound toll the Covid pandemic had on my family, my education and my personal life. My mother is a single parent to five children. I am truly a middle child in some of the most classic ways. She nurtured each of us as best she could while holding down a variety of jobs. At the beginning of the pandemic, we were fortunate to stay together and each of us did our best with virtual education and very spotty internet. But we persevered. When the eviction moratorium expired, our lives were turned upside down. The emotional toll on my mother was severe and she continues in her attempts to recover.
Throughout my childhood I was able to spend time with my father and grandmother. On many occasions, I would go to work with her and was able to sit in her administrative office or round with her as she talked and coached her healthcare team. I was so inspired by the nurses and other healthcare members. These early experiences and exposure solidified my determination to care for others
I truly have determination, dedication, and drive to make a real compassionate difference when people need it most. Growing up my grandmother (a retired nurse) truly inspired me to seek a career in the healthcare/nursing field. Seeing my grandmother connect with patients and staff truly instilled in me a desire to pursue a similar profession.
The Covid pandemic's impact on my family, myself, and my education will not define me. I have realized, despite these many unexpected occurrences, my determination, and self discipline will help me through my next chapter and I can overcome almost any obstacle. Realizing what I overcame during the pandemic, will help me work harder for the career I so deeply desire.
In the midst of the pandemic, while my mother was spiraling emotionally, I lost my oldest brother due to depression and suicide. This disastrous moment not only took a toll on my mental health, I secluded myself from friends and family and had no educational support from my mother, who was battling, by this time, severe mental illness. I was forced to pause my seventeen year old life, and education to care for my youngest brother until my uncle was able to gain custody.
Fortunately, I have succeeded in the completion of my high school education, and I am more determined than ever to achieve my goals.I have reconnected with my father and grandmother and they are a tremendous source of support and encouragement. My greatest motivation is for my beautiful daughter. I strive for success for us both. I am determined to break this generational curse within my family. Many elements over these past two years have been horrific but it was inspirational as well. I am Inspired to work harder for the life and career I have always wanted. Because of my circumstances, I know the challenge will require me to work harder than the majority of people, for what I want for myself.
I am ready and willing to work as hard to get the career I desire. College is my only option.
