Bio

I am a Christian, black male seeking to improve the world, pursuing the pharmaceutical development field for college. My goal in seeking these scholarships is not to have any debt after college, that way it is not something that follows me 10+ years after I have already completed my education. I enjoy being a dependable friend and older brother and have the desire to improve myself in any way, every day so that I can be the best person I can be. I am a Teacher Cadet, recipient of a Teaching Fellows Award and I like to volunteer in my community through the Beta club. I grow mentally every week through Model UN, and physically every day during my wrestling practices. I strive to grow everyday in all aspects of my life.

      Richard P. Mullen Memorial Scholarship
Hello, my name is Joshua Dean. I am not writing this just for the question of whether or not the honorable group behind this scholarship will offer the amount they have previously established. I am sincerely asking this committee to invest a young man's future. For all of my life, I have worked meticulously toward my academics and future as a person in general. I strive to be the best I can be every day. This is not just for me but for my family and the world. I know that I, just as anyone else in the world, has the ability to make the world a greater place. We each have the potential to change the world, and I want to reach mine. This is why I desire a career in pharmaceutical sciences or some other portion of the medical field. I know deep within my heart that I was put on this earth to protect people, so I want to put everything I have into this pursuit. I know this is not the specific field that was asked for this scholarship, but I know that with this assistance I could continue on to work towards this pharmaceutical sciences career with an engineering perspective. Through learning the production and proper creation of medicines, I can work with like-minded people to engineer a path toward healthier humans. In order too achieve this, higher education is required to do the job justice. I require assistance in this aspect because my family and I do not have adequate funds to sustain my college time. We have tried our hardest to reach the goal of university without debts, but we need more assistance. Any form of aid will push me closer to a goal that would be groundbreaking for my family. My parents were first-generation college students and persevered greatly to get to where they are in hopes of a better future. I want to do the same and eliminate debt, creating an example for my children and others around me of success and prosperity that doesn't come through underhanded methods or is easy, but through consistent hard work. I must make a positive impact on the world with my life, either through my career, kindness or philanthropy. However, in order to get in a better position to achieve these aspirations, I need assistance from caring and capable groups and individuals such as the ones reading this right now.

Hello, my name is Joshua Dean. I am an 18-year-old black male that loves to read, lift weights and delve into fantastical worlds. However, the real issues that need to be addressed are within the world where my own two feet are planted. This leaves me writing this not just for the question of whether or not the honorable group behind this scholarship will offer the amount they have previously established. I am sincerely asking this committee to invest a young man's future. Into my future. For all of my life, I have worked meticulously toward my academics and future as a person in general. I strive to be the best I can be every day. I expand past my comfort zone just to reach the distant goals I know are possible. This is not just for me but for my family and the world. I know that I, just like anyone else in the world, hold the ability to make the world a greater place. We each have the potential to change the world, and I want to reach mine. This is why I desire a career in pharmaceutical sciences or some other portion of the medical field. I know deep within my heart that I was put on this earth to protect people, so I want to put everything I have into this pursuit. I need the opportunity to leave a lasting impact on the world that is positive, and that will make the lives of individuals who are already working hard considerably easier. To achieve this, higher education is required to do the job justice. I want to do the same and eliminate debt, creating an example for my children and others around me of success. This kind of prosperity will not come through underhanded or deceptive means but through consistent hard work and empathy toward others. I must make a positive impact on the world with my life, either through my career, kindness, philanthropy or some combination of all of these. However, in order to get in a better position to achieve these aspirations, I need assistance from caring and capable groups and individuals such as the ones reading this right now.

Drug abuse and medical misinformation is a serious issue that runs through the black community, and it is something I hope to address with the skills and knowledge I gain in college. Alcoholism is also a serious issue in my family, so being in a position to combat it and other illnesses would be amazing and ideally inspirational for many others. To achieve this, higher education is required to do the job justice. I require assistance in this aspect because my family and I do not have adequate funds to sustain my college time. I will be an example of black excellence for not only my children but for other BIPOC kids and youth as well. For me, just seeing a successful black person motivates me to work harder and persevere because the results that I am aiming for are most definitely possible. I know that these ambitions are most definitely achievable, and I know that your assistance will bring their achievement closer.

I am sincerely asking this committee to invest a young man's future. I am an 18-year-old black male from South Carolina, and I have always aspired to live a of freedom. Throughout my time as a student, I have been blessed enough to have many experiential learning chances. Right off of the top of my head, I think of the summer seniors program, as I got the chance to not only experience the USC campus but learn about what it was like to be a college student. Other valuable opportunities include ones through the Beta Club, like campus cleanups or helping at schools around us. I remember one time earlier this year I participated in a fall festival for Dutch Fork Elementary, and it was a great experience because I got to man the cornhole station. I learned a lot about how to act around and treat elementary school kids, and it was a great experience. I have a few more, but they all resulted in my growth not just intellectually, but as a person. I have had to put everything I've learned into practice, and also improvise or do something completely new without even practicing beforehand, improving me in general. I would not have gotten the chance to do that if it weren't for these experiential learning opportunities. This is why I would to participate in similar activities during my time in college, and more. From studying abroad, to outreach programs to volunteering locally, I know that I want to do more things that expand my knowledge of people and the world. Even on-campus, I know there are plenty of clubs, activities and groups to join that would provide whole new perspectives and force me to positively adapt. These are vitally important experiences for any well-rounded individual. One way they are important is in the workplace, because by exposing yourself to different groups of people who think differently from you, it gives you a chance to grow and become a better leader within the workplace. For a job in healthcare, it is going to be essential to have hands-on knowledge and confidence, which can only come from a great education and tons of experience. This is why if I were to create an chance for experiential learning, I would create a collaborative opportunity between majors on-campus where they go into the community and assist wherever needed. Some of these places would vary depending on the major, like a law degree going into a real court house with a chemistry major. This would not only provide exposure for all students at the college, but also give chances for students to bond and either change what they want to do or reinforce their previous choice. This would create a more cohesive and understanding group of students who would make far better workers, leaders and innovators in the future.

My life is a composition of the places I have been and the people that I have met, which means that many individuals have influenced the person that I am right now. However, the biggest role model in my life is my father. I understand that this is common to say, but my Dad has shown me multiple sides of people and modeled for me the person I want to be. To start, bringing in the positives is essential. He has taught me so much about the intricacies of manhood and the importance of responsibility, a value he upholds meticulously every day. He shows character and perseverance through his continued dedication to his family and people who need it at the hospital he has been employed for the past 20+ years. The wisdom that my father holds is also a culmination of each struggle he endured to reach the point he is at now, filled with the hope of better coming ahead. These are traits that I consider intrinsic to me now as well, and part of me I would love to share with other people. With all this being said, my father has displayed many traits I want to develop away from, because of the many scars he holds. Now it does not feel appropriate to discuss his personal matters, but I can give general ideas. He is frequently late, procrastinates and can be very petty sometimes. My father has the potential to do many great things beyond what he is doing currently, but it is almost like he holding part of himself or his motivation back. In the end, he is only a human. Just like my father, I and every other living individual on this planet hold flaws and issues within our own characters. However, what differentiates successful people from those stuck in the same position for their lives is the ability to work past and grow out of your failures into a greater person. This is exactly what my Dad has had to do for his whole life, showing his resilience and intelligence. He has had to learn from experience and work his way to a life he can be proud of, which is the only thing any of us can hope for in the future. That core reason is my father is a great role model, and a hero in his own way. As for why I chose to join, Model UN, I initially joined out of a vague interest in public speaking. However, as I learned more, the prospect of debating real issues seemed important. I loved the idea that a group of high schoolers could come together to solve problems the rest of the world was struggling with. It gave it weight and purpose and provided meaning to our in-houses and conferences. The most recent conference I went to was amazing, as I met so many intelligent people around my age that had transformative ideas. I didn't agree with everything they had to say, but I shouldn't. We should have disagreements, but we should be able to learn from them to become better as humans. This is what being in a debate-based club taught me.

Obstacles are a part of life; as cliche as that may sound, it is accurate. Anyone decent or successful in anything has faced numerous barriers, whether they are external or internal. I am no exception, and these obstacles push me to become better. Instead of doubting my ability to achieve the goals I have before me, I fight hard. I work for the future because I believe in myself enough to know I WILL be successful. Wrestling has helped me come to this understanding. Though I was in my senior year in high school with no prior wrestling knowledge, I wanted to join the wrestling team. I desired to push myself to a point where I would have to grow. After the first week of practice, I was sore and frustrated at my inability to do anything right. In the following practices, I saw progress while still struggling to do multiple things swiftly and correctly. Fast forward to my first match, and I won. It was a great feeling that sparked my appreciation for the chance I had to wrestle at all. After that success, I faced the wall of incessant pins across most of my matches. What was most discouraging about this is that I fought and resisted each time and still got pinned back to back. It was physically and emotionally challenging. Most of all it, it was demoralizing. From here, I had two options: Stay the course hoping to be better, or work harder and take the victories for myself. After that point, I started to work out in the mornings. I watched more wrestling matches, studied educational videos and gave more during practice. Facing challenges was the goal for joining the team in the first place, so that is precisely what I did. I still lost, but I knew I was getting better. I felt it. So, if this is 8 or 9, I turned it up to 10 after this. I used weights, worked in cardio, and paid more attention to my eating habits. Although I was exhausted, I felt exceedingly proud that I was able to do this. Then came my match for senior night against a guy at least 20 pounds heavier. My family and our friends were there. The whole team was there too. Before that match, I honed in. I synthesized everything I had learned and focused only on the event ahead. I warmed up, practiced in stance, and mentally prepared for each move. When I went out there, I had it set in my mind that I would win. I knew I would not leave that mat without a win in my favor. I had never felt like that before, and it was during this time I "turned it up to 11". I pulled moves off that I did not know I was good at and stayed in control. There were periods full of fatigue. When I felt like slowing down, the encouragement from everyone close to me kept me at this state of eleven. I was aggressive against my nature and tough, accepting challenges as a path to glory. As the timer ran down, I began to see my victory. I held this firm against my exhaustion, coming out victorious. It was a wonderful night and something I will never forget. This experience taught me I am capable of so much and proved I didn't waste my energy. It further cemented the fact I can conquer anything I put my mind to.

Distant worlds. Different Families. Distinct Experiences. These traits and countless others are within the universes and parallel worlds of literature. From a younger age, I've always enjoyed pouring my time and devotion into different topics and worlds. Admittedly, I stopped reading as much, but this year I've picked it back up, reading some great books like The Great Alone by Kristin Hannah and Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury. One thing that has been consistent throughout my life has been my love for fantasy books. Epic tales that pit an admirable hero or group of heroes against a seemingly invulnerable enemy are always enjoyable. Seeing their acknowledgment of the challenge, preparation, and perseverance in the face of extraordinary adversity has always been inspiring. Reflecting on this now, this kind of literature has influenced my interest in a career in the medical field. I saw these people, and I wanted to have the ability to protect and impact everyone to the same degree as these heroes. They are selfless, strong, and motivated, believing in a cause and fighting with it until the very end. I aspire to be like this as well. However, I am also aware that the world is not as straightforward and idealistic as I would hope. Sometimes books portray this through their characters and themes, showing readers like myself the darker parts of humanity. Classic literature like Othello and murder mysteries that seemed all but too possible made these truths evident. However, after learning about life and motivations, I could always see how some people needed just one positive influence. A guiding hand, a push in the right direction, or an individual who cared that they were there could have prevented many issues. I strive to be that person for others. To be a reliable shoulder for reassurance, and to have the ability to reach people where it matters the most. That is another reason why I know this career choice in the medical field was influenced by the literature I have devoured. One final example I have are the challenging books I have read. I struggled to finish these due to their length, the details poured in by the author or just a simple disliking of them. These were difficult, but there came a certain point where the value and beauty became evident. I can think of two examples regarding these, Animal Farm and 1984. I honestly didn't like either of these books, and I definitely don't want to read them again. However, I see the finesse of the author and deeper meanings within the text. I comprehend the stories and their respective underlying themes. Texts like these enforced that seeing things through can sometimes surprise you, making it worth it more often than not. Getting past how you feel will open up multiple opportunities and present plenty of teachable moments for the duration of your life. In summary, literature is essential for personal growth and awareness of our world, as it is impractical to experience everything from where we are now. This makes seeing the world through another person's lens, even if they are fictional, all the more valuable and enticing. If more of us could see things from another perspective, the countries of the world and their inhabitants would improve dramatically.
