    1989 (Taylor's Version) Fan Scholarship
If my year so far had a soundtrack, it would undoubtedly feature several songs from 1989 (Taylor's Version), each capturing different facets of my journey and emotions. The album itself is a celebration of self-discovery, resilience, and growth, themes that have resonated deeply with me this year. First and foremost, “Shake It Off” would be a central track. This song embodies the spirit of letting go of negativity and embracing who you are. There have been moments this year when I've faced challenges and criticism, whether in my personal life or professional endeavors. “Shake It Off” has served as a reminder to rise above the noise, shake off the doubt, and keep moving forward. The upbeat tempo and empowering lyrics have been my anthem during tough times, urging me to focus on my goals and not be weighed down by others’ opinions. Another essential song would be “Out of the Woods.” This track captures the anxiety and uncertainty of navigating through difficult situations. This year has had its fair share of ups and downs, and I’ve often found myself reflecting on whether I was truly “out of the woods” in certain aspects of my life. The haunting melody and vivid imagery resonate with my experiences, reminding me of the importance of perseverance and finding clarity amidst chaos. “Blank Space” would also make the cut, as it perfectly encapsulates the excitement and unpredictability of new beginnings. This year, I’ve taken bold steps toward new opportunities—be it in my career or personal projects. The song’s playful take on love and ambition reflects my own approach to embracing the unknown and making the most of every chance. It reminds me that while life can be messy and complicated, there’s beauty in the spontaneity of it all. Lastly, “New Romantics” would round out my soundtrack. This anthem celebrates youth, ambition, and the pursuit of dreams. It perfectly mirrors my aspirations this year as I’ve focused on self-improvement and finding joy in the journey. The lyrics encourage me to revel in the chaos of life, reminding me that it’s okay to chase my dreams fiercely and embrace the moments of joy amidst the struggles. Together, these songs from 1989 (Taylor's Version) encapsulate the resilience, hope, and determination that have defined my year, serving as a powerful reminder of the journey I’m on. Each track resonates with different aspects of my experiences, weaving a narrative of growth and self-discovery.
    Strong Leaders of Tomorrow Scholarship
I believe that in order to be a leader, you must first be able to lead yourself. A mantra that I always live by states that the highest form of self love is self discipline. As a student and track athlete, this principle becomes not just a guideline but a necessity for achieving excellence. Self-discipline is the cornerstone of success in both academics and athletics. In the classroom, it drives you to stay organized, manage your time effectively, and push through challenges. It's what enables you to resist distractions, maintain focus on your studies, and consistently put in the effort needed to excel. On the track, my self-discipline manifests as rigorous training, adherence to a strict regimen, and the mental toughness to overcome physical and psychological barriers. It's about waking up early for practice, sticking to a balanced diet, and pushing through the workouts that are essential for improvement. The discipline to train when you don’t feel like it, to listen to your coach, and to recover properly is what differentiates the mediocre from the exceptional. Where motivation ends, discipline begins. After being able to lead yourself, being able to lead others creates a powerful ripple effect that extends beyond your immediate sphere. Leadership is not just about giving directions or making decisions; it’s about inspiring, motivating, and empowering those around you. When you lead by example, demonstrating discipline, integrity, and commitment, you earn the respect and trust of your peers. This trust allows you to effectively guide others towards shared goals and aspirations. Leadership is about fostering a collaborative environment where everyone feels valued and driven. It’s about recognizing the strengths of your team members and helping them to reach their full potential. By setting high standards for yourself and showing what is possible through your actions, you provide a model for others to emulate. Furthermore, leading others requires empathy and communication. It involves understanding diverse perspectives, addressing concerns, and providing support. It’s about creating an atmosphere where everyone feels motivated to contribute their best and where obstacles are faced collectively with resilience and determination. The impact of strong leadership is transformative. It can elevate a group’s performance, foster a positive culture, and drive meaningful change. When you lead effectively, you not only achieve your own goals but also help others to succeed, creating a legacy of excellence and collaboration that endures. Leadership, in essence, is about harnessing the power of collective effort to achieve something greater than what any individual could accomplish alone. In conclusion, what makes me a leader is my ability to not only take accountability, but to also hold others accountable and up to the standard that we set.

As an incoming sophomore at Colgate University -which only has an African American student body of 4.7%- , I have found it exceptionally difficult to surround myself with people who understand my experiences as a minority. While Colgate University offers various resources and support systems, the low percentage of African American students can make it challenging to find a community that truly resonates with my cultural background and personal experiences. I am also a member of the Varsity track and field team and majoring in computer science while minoring in economics. Being an athlete, leadership is a value that is held highly. Balancing my academic pursuits with the demands of athletics has been an enriching yet challenging experience. The discipline and time management skills I've developed through my involvement in track and field have been instrumental in my success both on and off the track. This dual commitment has taught me resilience, teamwork, and the importance of setting and achieving goals, which are essential qualities in any leadership role. In high school, I was senior captain of the track team, vice president of the black student union, and treasurer of the nonprofit organization Greater Nazarene Outreach Mission. I have continued the roles of leadership into my college years as I am co-captain of the sprints team and though not yet a leader, I am very active in Colgate's black student union, Brothers of Color, and Raiders of Color Connect. Everyone commonly says, “Hard work beats talent when talent doesn’t work hard.” News flash. It doesn’t. I found this out clearly my junior year of high school football. As my highly successful spring practice came to a close, a new variable emerged by the name of Edan Stagg. A transfer student. Not only a senior, not only played my position, but better than me in every facet of the game. Over the course of the summer, I speedily found out Edan’s success did not come from giving full effort in practice or going over drills on the weekends. Mr. Stagg’s success: fully inherited. Given a birthright of incredible athleticism and football skill: a family heirloom. That summer I put my head down and grinded almost every day. I joined a 7v7 team to better my skills, worked out, ran, practiced my footwork, and improved my catching. I thought my efforts started to finally pay off, but the real test would come during “boot camp” where coaches make the final starting roster. Well, it surely came to my surprise when I did not receive my award of the starting spot which I clearly deserved; rather Edan was gifted it instead. This devastated me because all of my hard work proved in vain. I sat the bench for the whole season and only played in the fourth quarter when we already led by a sizable margin. For the remainder of the season I played “second-team,” code for: ‘you aren’t gonna play, but we don’t wanna make you feel bad about it.’ This type of failure differs from a regular football game because when you lose, YOU lose. Not the whole team, or offense, or defense: you. That year, we won the state championship, which put the whole team on top of the world. Except for me. I did not care nor was I particularly excited about the win because I felt undeserving of it. I did not contribute to the success of the team in any aspect, so what warranted me getting a ring? Sure coaches say, ‘the back-ups and scout team are just as important as the starters because they help give us a look.’ I didn’t want to give a look. I wanted to be the look. Needless to say, that year I quit football. A challenging decision to make, considering I played football since fourth grade. Eight years of my life down the drain. The following two months after quitting, I didn’t know what would come next for me or what to do. I knew I needed to play a sport for two reasons. One: stay active and productive, and two: I still wanted to earn an athletic scholarship. Around March, the Indoor Track and Field team won the state championship. Boom! I knew what to do. It was a neat coincidence my grandfather, dad, and brothers all did track and field in high school or college, so it seemed right for me to carry the baton. Long story short, I had an exceptional season, running at the outdoor state championship meet and even collecting my first athletic scholarship. This whole experience showed me I still have my whole life ahead of me. Everything you know, worked for, and even your goals can flip on their heads. I was wrong. Hard work does beat talent when talent doesn’t work hard.

In August of 2021, my grandfather PoPo, more formally known as Clarence Antoine Jr., passed away. He had three strokes, the first one in June of 2020. These strokes led to his further health problems, deteriorating health, and ultimately his death. However, PoPo lived an amazing life! Born in 1944, he and my grandmother were able to establish a beautiful family and find housing in a nice neighborhood despite being African Americans fighting racism. During his life, Clarence was an educator for Baton Rouge Magnet High School for over 40 years. I've heard stories from countless former students explaining how my grandfather met with them at 4 in the morning before school to 7 in the evening after school, tutoring them in mathematics for free, just so they understood the material and passed with good grades. This generous spirit in my grandfather was well known by everyone. However, Clarence was not best known for being a teacher, but a track and field coach. If you ask any college athlete around the country that lived in Baton Rouge during high school who their favorite coach was, their answer would be "Coach Antoine." However, he was not their favorite due to his kindness or compassion because on the track, PoPo was another person. He was their favorite because he pushed them to limits they didn't know could be broken, pushed them to ask themselves "Why am I doing this?", and ultimately pushed them to become the best versions of themselves. This drive and work ethic is something that he instilled in me. Not PoPo's death, but his life inspired me to focus on what I truly wanted in life. Initially, I didn't want to run track because it seemed stupid. "Who would want to run for fun?" I asked myself on many occasions. However, after his death, I longed a way that I could connect with him and honor him that went deeper than condolences and flowers. I ran track. This activity helped me see the world in a whole new light. I can now confidently say that I love track and field! The individuality of track requires you to work for yourself and answer only to yourself. There is no one to blame but you. This motivates me to be better than my competition, work harder than my competition. I am able to use track as not only a way to stay in shape, but as an escape. The quietness and rubbery smell of the track is what I look forward to most every evening after school. Just me, my thoughts, and my legs. Participating in track and field at my high school, University Laboratory School in Baton Rouge, Louisiana has graciously allotted me the opportunity to go on an official visit to Colgate University and commit to their track and field program, though not on scholarship. At Colgate University, I plan on majoring in Economics, a popular and thriving field. In addition to this major, I aspire to minor in finance to become well-rounded in the field. These successes would not have been possible if PoPo did not constantly encourage me with his mantras and ultimately his life. He would always say, "Begin with the end in mind," and that is how I believe he lived his life. With the end in mind.
    Building a Better World Scholarship
In January of 2024, I decided I wanted to better myself and start taking self improvement seriously. I started eating healthier, taking time to myself, and even journaling. As a collegiate track and field athlete, I found it of utmost importance to keep myself healthy mentally, physically, and emotionally. Yet, I was still forgetting something. I didn't know then that I also had to care for my health spiritually. In the months to come, I continued on this path, but in April of that year, I found myself longing for something else. Something that school, girls, and even track was not filling. It was God. I started small, just reading a chapter of the Bible a day. It didn't feel like I was doing much at all and I was wasting my time. However, the Bible says seek and you shall find, ask and it shall be given unto you; and that's what I did. As I remained steadfast in my reading, God revealed himself to me in such an intimate way that I cannot even put it into words. The feeling of understanding and peace I felt truly changed me. I knew that because of this experience, I could not deny His existence and I HAD to remain true to Him, His Word, and His character. As a person neck deep in the world, it was not an easy decision to live for Christ and change my ways, and at times I still struggle. Put the race is not given to the swift, nor the battle to the weak. Walking the narrow path is not easy, but it surely worth it. Through this change in my life, I have had the urgent need to evangelize and spread the Good News of Jesus Christ. Being in college, the ways of the world are prevalent and everywhere. Good is called evil and evil is called good. Creating a better world seems like a daunting task, but it starts small. As I enter into my sophomore year, I plan on leading a life that glorifies God. I have to acknowledge the fact that the way I live my life may be the only Bible many of my classmate will ever read, and as a Christian, it is my responsibility to represent Christ and the Kingdom as best I can. This scholarship will help me afford to stay in school and pursue this journey. "Let your light shine before men so that they may see your good works and glorify your Father who is in Heaven."

Though I haven't personally encountered cardiac disease, the impact of this condition reverberated deeply through my family, primarily through my grandmother's journey. Her battle with cardiac issues was a defining chapter in our lives, one that shaped my understanding of resilience, the fragility of life, and the strength found in unity. My grandmother, a beacon of strength and warmth in our family, faced a formidable adversary in the form of cardiac disease. Witnessing her struggle was both heartbreaking and enlightening. The constant hospital visits, the hushed conversations about medical procedures, and the palpable tension during uncertain moments cast a shadow over our once-vibrant family dynamics. Through it all, our family rallied around her with unwavering support. We became a tight-knit unit, offering not just practical assistance but also emotional solace during her challenging times. The fear and uncertainty that accompanied her journey left an indelible mark on all of us, teaching us the delicate balance between hope and acceptance, between resilience and vulnerability. Her resilience amidst adversity was awe-inspiring. Despite the physical and emotional toll, she approached each day with unwavering courage, finding moments of joy amidst the struggle. Her determination to fight against the odds became a testament to the strength of the human spirit, a guiding light for our family. The experience was a catalyst for transformative learning. It opened conversations about the importance of health and well-being within our family. We became advocates for healthy living, emphasizing regular check-ups, the significance of maintaining a balanced lifestyle, and the impact of making proactive choices to mitigate the risks associated with cardiac issues. On a personal level, witnessing her journey shaped my perspective profoundly. It taught me the value of empathy and patience, fostering a deeper understanding of the challenges faced by individuals battling health adversities. It also illuminated the fragility of life and the importance of cherishing every moment, cultivating gratitude for the blessings we often take for granted. Though the journey was riddled with challenges, it provided an invaluable lesson in resilience and unity. It brought our family closer together, strengthening our bonds and reinforcing the importance of unwavering support during difficult times. While I haven't directly confronted cardiac disease, the impact it had on my family resonated deeply, leaving an enduring impression on my outlook towards health, compassion, and the resilient spirit that resides within each of us. Her journey serves as a poignant reminder to prioritize not only physical health but also emotional well-being, fostering a culture of care and empathy within our family and community.

    Financial Literacy Scholarship Award
Understanding the distinction between needs and wants has been a profoundly personal revelation in my journey towards financial literacy. It's not just a lesson in budgeting or economics; it's a transformative mindset shift that has reshaped my relationship with money and influenced the way I navigate life's financial landscape. As a young adult, I used to conflate my desires with necessities, often succumbing to societal pressures or fleeting impulses. It was a gradual realization—one that stemmed from moments of reflection and introspection—that led me to understand the profound impact of discerning between what I truly needed and what I merely wanted. The epiphany came during a period of financial struggle. I found myself juggling expenses, trying to balance my budget while striving to fulfill every passing whim. It was then that I began to scrutinize my spending habits more closely, questioning the true essence of my purchases. Through this introspection, I began to discern the essentials—the genuine needs that sustained my life and well-being—from the fleeting desires that added momentary pleasure but lacked lasting value. This realization sparked a fundamental shift in my approach to money. It wasn't about deprivation or denying myself the joys of life; rather, it was about reclaiming control over my financial decisions. By prioritizing needs over wants, I gained a newfound sense of financial freedom. I could allocate resources more intentionally, ensuring that crucial expenses were met without compromising my financial security or accumulating unnecessary debt. Beyond budgeting, this lesson seeped into my broader life philosophy. It influenced how I set goals and envision my financial future. It empowered me to establish a solid financial foundation—a safety net for unexpected circumstances, a platform to pursue my aspirations, and a pathway towards long-term stability. But perhaps most significantly, this lesson taught me the profound value of contentment. By discerning between needs and wants, I discovered a sense of gratitude for the simple joys that fulfilled my genuine needs. It's about cherishing a warm meal with loved ones, finding comfort in a safe and cozy home, and relishing the security of having essential needs met. The lesson of distinguishing between needs and wants has been a guiding light, shaping not just my financial decisions but fostering a deeper appreciation for life's true treasures. It's a heartfelt realization that continues to guide me towards a more mindful, purposeful, and fulfilling relationship with money—one grounded in gratitude, wisdom, and conscious choices.
Science Fiction Becomes Science Fact Scholarship
In the realm of computer science, the fusion of artificial intelligence (AI) and healthcare has long been an intriguing aspect, often portrayed in science fiction as a futuristic marvel. However, through advancements in machine learning, data analytics, and computational algorithms, this convergence has the potential to transition from speculative fiction to groundbreaking reality. Addressing the educational opportunity gap in underserved communities has been a core focus and passion of mine, stemming from a deeply personal journey and a fervent belief in the transformative power of education. Growing up in an environment where disparities in educational resources were starkly evident, I recognized the systemic barriers that hindered equal access to quality education. This realization ignited a desire within me to be part of the solution, to bridge the gap, and to create pathways for equitable learning opportunities. As a college student, I've immersed myself in multifaceted approaches to address this issue. One of my primary avenues of contribution has been through direct involvement in tutoring and mentorship programs. Spending hours volunteering at local schools and community centers, I've engaged with students who may lack additional educational support. These interactions extend beyond academics; they're about fostering confidence, nurturing ambitions, and instilling the belief that their dreams are valid and achievable. Whether assisting with homework, explaining complex concepts, or simply providing a listening ear, these moments are catalysts for empowerment and inspiration. Moreover, I've taken on leadership roles within student organizations deeply committed to educational equity. Collaborating with dedicated peers, we've orchestrated fundraising events, organized donation drives for essential school supplies, and led awareness campaigns to spotlight the pressing need for fair and inclusive education. These endeavors aren't just about providing temporary aid; they're about advocating for sustainable change, lobbying for policy reforms, and striving to reshape the educational landscape to ensure every student has an equal chance to thrive. In tandem with direct involvement, I've delved into research projects exploring the root causes of educational disparities. Understanding the intricate web of systemic challenges faced by underserved communities has been instrumental in shaping my advocacy efforts. By dissecting these complexities, I aim to contribute nuanced perspectives to discussions, propose informed solutions, and advocate for evidence-based policies that address the underlying issues at play. Furthermore, I've embraced opportunities to use my voice as a catalyst for change. Writing articles for local publications, participating in panel discussions, and engaging in community dialogues, I've endeavored to raise awareness and spark crucial conversations about the urgency of addressing educational inequities. These platforms serve as vehicles to amplify marginalized voices, evoke empathy, and mobilize collective action toward tangible and sustainable change. My commitment to this cause is unwavering, grounded in the belief that education is not just a privilege but a fundamental right. It's a journey marked by perseverance, empathy, and collaboration—a journey that demands resilience in the face of challenges and a relentless pursuit of justice and equality. While the issue of educational disparity remains multifaceted and complex, I am steadfast in my dedication to effecting meaningful change. Through continuous advocacy, hands-on involvement, and a steadfast determination to dismantle barriers, I aspire to contribute significantly to creating a more equitable educational landscape where every student has the opportunity to flourish and succeed.

There was a moment during my sophomore year of high school when life threw unexpected hurdles our way. My mother, the unwavering rock of our family, faced a sudden health crisis that demanded immediate attention. As the eldest sibling, I found myself shouldering a newfound responsibility—a delicate balancing act between school, looking after my younger sister, and supporting my mother through her recovery. The weight of this situation was immense, and there were days when the gravity of it all threatened to overwhelm me. Yet, I knew I had to summon the resilience instilled in me by my family. With my mother's words of encouragement echoing in my mind, I embraced the challenge with determination. I reorganized my schedule, juggling schoolwork, extracurricular activities, and household responsibilities. Late nights became a norm as I studied while ensuring our home ran smoothly. But amidst the chaos, I found moments of solace—sitting by my mother's bedside, helping my sister with her homework, or simply sharing a smile to lighten the heaviness that lingered. It was during this time that I realized the true depth of resilience. It wasn’t just about enduring hardships; it was about adapting, about finding strength in vulnerability, and about discovering a well of resilience within myself that I hadn’t known existed. As weeks turned into months, my mother's health gradually improved. With each positive sign, our spirits lifted, and the weight on my shoulders eased. Her recovery became a beacon of hope, a testament to the power of resilience and the unwavering support of our family. Looking back, that period was a defining chapter—one where I learned firsthand the value of resilience and the importance of embracing challenges head-on. It wasn't easy, and there were moments of doubt and exhaustion. However, it was in those moments that I unearthed a reservoir of strength within myself—a strength nurtured by the love and support of my family. That experience taught me that resilience isn't just about weathering the storm; it's about finding moments of grace and strength within the storm. It's about recognizing the silver linings amidst the clouds and emerging stronger, more compassionate, and more determined than before. It was a testament not only to my personal resilience but also to the collective strength and unity within our family. Through that challenging time, we grew closer, standing as a testament to the unwavering support and love that continue to guide us through life's trials.

As a high school senior eagerly anticipating the transition to college and the broader horizon of adulthood, I have been fortunate to receive valuable financial advice that I believe will shape my future. Among the various tips and insights I've encountered, one piece of advice stands out as the best: "Save early, save consistently." This simple yet profound wisdom emphasizes the importance of financial discipline and planning. In this essay, I will elaborate on how I intend to utilize this advice throughout my college career and beyond, focusing on the benefits of saving, budgeting, and investing. Saving money is an essential habit that will not only provide a sense of security but also enable me to achieve my long-term goals. By diligently saving a portion of my income, I will develop a financial cushion that can serve as a safety net during unforeseen circumstances. It will allow me to face emergencies with confidence and prevent the need for excessive borrowing or relying on others. Additionally, saving early will facilitate the opportunity for me to harness the power of compound interest. Through this mechanism, the money I set aside today can grow exponentially over time. By starting early, I can capitalize on the benefits of long-term investments, such as retirement accounts or mutual funds. This strategy will enable me to make the most of my hard-earned money and lay the foundation for financial freedom in the future. Another crucial aspect of financial advice that I received is the significance of budgeting. As I embark on my college journey, I am committed to creating and adhering to a realistic budget that aligns with my income, expenses, and financial goals. Budgeting will help me track my spending habits, avoid unnecessary debt, and make informed financial decisions. With a well-structured budget in place, I will be able to allocate my funds efficiently, covering essentials like tuition fees, accommodation, textbooks, and other necessary expenses. Moreover, by prioritizing my financial goals and distinguishing between needs and wants, I can reduce impulsive purchases and develop responsible spending habits. Beyond saving and budgeting, investing presents an exciting opportunity to grow my wealth over time. By following the advice of saving consistently, I will have the means to invest in various assets that align with my risk tolerance and financial objectives. Whether it be stocks, bonds, real estate, or starting a small business, I aim to diversify my investment portfolio to maximize potential returns. To make informed investment decisions, I will take advantage of available resources, such as financial literacy courses, books, and online platforms. By continuously educating myself about different investment strategies and staying up to date with market trends, I can make well-informed choices that align with my long-term financial goals. As I embark on my college journey, I am aware of the potential burden of student loans. While scholarships and grants are fantastic options to explore, I understand that loans may be necessary. Therefore, I intend to approach student loans with caution and make informed decisions to minimize the impact on my financial future. By utilizing the advice of saving early and consistently, I will strive to limit my reliance on loans and only borrow what is necessary. This will allow me to keep my debt manageable and reduce the financial stress that can hinder post-graduation plans. Additionally, I plan to actively seek out opportunities for loan forgiveness or repayment assistance programs, which can alleviate the burden in the long run. The best piece of financial advice I have received also carries an underlying message of personal responsibility and self-reliance. By saving early and consistently, I am cultivating a mindset of financial independence. This mindset empowers me to take control of my financial future and make choices that align with my long-term goals. By recognizing the value of delayed gratification, I am more likely to resist impulsive purchases and focus on the bigger picture. This mindset encourages me to prioritize financial well-being and make thoughtful decisions regarding education, career paths, and lifestyle choices. Furthermore, by applying the principles of saving, budgeting, and investing, I aim to build a strong financial foundation that will enable me to pursue my passions and dreams without being hindered by financial constraints. This independence will allow me to make choices based on personal fulfillment and values, rather than solely driven by financial considerations. In conclusion, the best piece of financial advice I have received as a high school senior is to save early and consistently. By adhering to this guidance, I will cultivate a habit of financial discipline that will prove invaluable throughout my college career and beyond. Through saving, budgeting, investing, embracing a frugal lifestyle, navigating student loans wisely, and cultivating a mindset of financial independence, I am confident that I will not only achieve financial stability but also unlock the doors to financial freedom. By following this advice, I am well-prepared to face the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead, building a prosperous future based on sound financial principles.

Participating in track and field at my high school, LSU Laboratory School, has graciously given me the opportunity to continue my athletic and academic career at the Division 1 collegiate level. As a result of this, I have been able to commit to Colgate University in Hamilton, New York for track and field; a very prestigious university. With this opportunity I have been given, I plan and aspire to major in Economics, a thriving and very popular field. In addition to this, I plan to minor in General Finance or Business to become more well-rounded in my field. With this Economics major and Finance or Business minor, occupations such as being an economist, financial manager, market research analyst, financial advisor, and countless others are possible. These degrees can open tons and tons of doors in the so-called "money market." You may be wondering or asking yourself: "How would working in the business or finance field make the world a better place?" Well, the answer to this very question can be found in this quote. As said by famous author and philosopher Matshona Dhilwayo, "One smile, one hug, one handshake, one word, can change the world." The finance and business industry involves a numerous amount of interactions, introductions, conversations, and other forms of communication in the workplace. For example, working on the infamous Wall Street could create connections with the rich, elite, and most influential members of our society. Connecting this to Matshona Dhilwayo's quote, the way I carry myself now and interact with others makes a positive impact on the world. Continuing this in the future, meeting hundreds to thousands of more people can help me make a greater, more significant positive impact. It may seem insignificant, but smiling is contagious. Being kind is contagious. A positive impact is contagious. Making the world a "better place" is not some ginormous or grand task. Creating a positive impact on the world should be mundane. A day to day task. In my life I have - and plan on continuing - been shining a bright light wherever I go, to whoever I meet. As famously said by Scott Adams, "There's no such thing as a small act of kindness. Every act creates a ripple with no logical end." If I create a glimmer of positivity in someone's life, they would continue to pass this positivity on. Making the world a better place. With no logical end.

Being a high school student at University Lab School, I have learned that mental and emotional health is an extremely relevant and pressing issue, especially in today’s world. Between assignments, teachers, “friends,” and cliques; there are a wide array of potential problems for students. Additionally, high schoolers’ self-esteem is constantly under attack. Social media platforms and created social norms require students to be near perfect in their appearance, behavior, and actions. Because of this, maintaining and managing mental and emotional health in school is extremely important. I participate in one of the hardest sports on one’s mental health and confidence: track and field. Oftentimes, I find myself comparing my accomplishments to others and have to remind myself that I deserve to be at the skill level I am at, because having wavering confidence is having no confidence at all. Participating in track, I have learned and applied two healthy habits that help in managing my mental and emotional health. Prayer and breathing. A common mantra that people repeatedly say “God gives his hardest battles to his strongest soldiers'' is something that helps me stay at peace no matter the adversity I may be facing. Giving my burdens and things that trouble me to God has always assisted me in not letting my circumstances overwhelm me and maintaining a healthy mind. Another habit that helps me remain calm, especially in my sport, is simply breathing. Whether I am about to take a hard test or at the starting line before a race, I close my eyes and take a deep breath; exhaling the nerves and inhaling peace. These two habits are always reliable and will help with my mental health through college and beyond. Creating a safe space for your friends and those around you is incredibly important. Just four years ago, a student in the grade below me, unfortunately, committed suicide. This uprooted the close-knit community of the school because no one ever expected him to do it. All his friends described him as compassionate, kind, and fun-loving. I believe it is dangerous that even his friends had no idea of what he was facing. This is why the most important thing I can do to assist with my friends’ mental health is to communicate. Open and honest communication can relieve stress and pressure off of someone simply by getting the problems off their chest. Genuinely asking questions such as “Are you okay?” and “How is everything going?” can make a difference in a classmate’s life. Facing a problem alone is no way to go about maintaining good mental health which is why I am always there for my classmates, friends, and peers. All in all, practicing self-care, good habits, and seeking help when needed are important for maintaining good mental health.

From this experience, I have learned that comparison is the thief of joy. This value will influence and affect my future career choices and choices in general by reminding me to focus on bettering myself.

Everyday choices, such as what we eat, how we get around, and what products we use, can have a significant impact on the environment. For example, choosing to eat a plant-based diet can reduce the number of greenhouse gases produced by the agriculture industry. Using public transportation, walking, or biking instead of driving can also help reduce air pollution and greenhouse gas emissions. In addition to these choices, there are many other ways to live sustainably on a daily basis. For example, you can reduce your energy consumption by turning off lights and electronics when not in use, and by using energy-efficient appliances and light bulbs. You can also reduce your use of disposable products, such as plastic water bottles and single-use plastic bags, and instead opt for reusable alternatives. Another important way to live sustainably is to support environmentally-friendly businesses and products. This can include buying locally-grown and organic food, choosing products made from sustainable materials, and supporting companies that prioritize environmental protection and conservation. In addition to these individual actions, it's important to also advocate for policies and practices that protect the environment. This can include supporting organizations that work on environmental issues, voting for political leaders who prioritize sustainability, and speaking out about the importance of environmental protection. The future consequences of unsustainable living include environmental degradation, natural disasters, resource depletion, economic instability, and social and political instability. These consequences can have far-reaching and long-lasting impacts on both individuals and societies. Environmental degradation can lead to loss of biodiversity and habitat destruction, which can have negative impacts on the health and well-being of humans and other species. Natural disasters, such as hurricanes and droughts, can cause the destruction of homes, infrastructure, and natural resources, leading to economic and social disruption. Resource depletion can result in shortages of essential resources, such as water and food, and can lead to economic instability and social conflict. These negative consequences can be avoided by transitioning to sustainable practices and policies that prioritize the protection of the environment and natural resources. In conclusion, living sustainably involves making conscious choices every day to reduce your impact on the environment and support efforts to protect and preserve our planet. By taking these actions, we can help create a healthier, more sustainable world for current and future generations. "We have the choice of two paths: to tread on the path of ignorance and apathy and become the victims of our own doing, or to act on the knowledge we have and preserve our planet for future generations." - Wangari Maathai, Kenyan environmentalist and Nobel laureate.

I am a successful varsity track and field athlete at my high school, University Laboratory School in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. This has graciously allotted me the opportunity to go on an official visit to Colgate University and commit to their track and field program, though not on scholarship. At Colgate University, I plan on majoring in Economics, a popular and thriving field. In addition to this major, I aspire to minor in finance to become well-rounded in the field. As famously said by English composer and conductor Colin R. Davis: "The road to success and the road to failure are almost exactly the same." To me, this quote means that your success is based on your small, seemingly harmless choices. Choices drive your life, character, and who you are as a person. Sure I could choose to party and not take care of my school work at Colgate, but that path to failure is faster than Usain Bolt. To succeed at Colgate, a very prestigious university, hard work, determination, cooperation, and the ability to find motivation in spite of "darkness" is required. Though challenging, the economics major opens tons upon tons of doors for a potential career path whether it be in stocks, marketing, finance, general business, or a multitude of other occupations. The list of benefits of an economics degree from Colgate University is very expansive. Future job opportunities will come abundantly and almost immediately after graduation as I learned from the Colgate U graduates and students while visiting. Using my degree from Colgate and my future job, assisting others in becoming financially literate will be a simple task. Financial advisors are known for bettering the lives of their clients and educating them in regards to financial knowledge. You may be wondering or asking yourself: "How would working as a financial advisor better the lives of the clients?" Well, the obvious answer is the ability to help the clients achieve the financial goals that they never would have thought to be possible. Retirement, supporting children, saving for vacation, and tons of other amazing financial benefits are all things that financial advisors can help their clients achieve. By managing my clients money, I can teach them the knowledge I have learned in school and encourage them to utilize this knowledge to educate their family and friends. Another answer to this question can be found in this quote. Best said by famous author and philosopher Matshona Dhilwayo, "One smile, one hug, one handshake, one word, can change the world."

I have always had a passion for athleticism, ever since I was a young child. I was constantly on the go, always playing sports and staying active. This passion has only grown as I have gotten older, and it has had a huge impact on my academic experience. First and foremost, being an athlete has taught me the importance of discipline and hard work. In order to succeed in sports, you have to be willing to put in the time and effort to improve. This discipline carries over into my academic life, where I am able to focus and work hard in order to achieve my goals. Another aspect of being an athlete that has had a positive impact on my academic experience is the importance of teamwork. In sports, you rely on your teammates to help you succeed, and this has taught me the value of collaboration and communication. In the classroom, I am able to work well with my peers and contribute to group projects and discussions. Additionally, being an athlete has helped me manage my time effectively. Balancing school work, practice, and meets can be challenging, but it has taught me how to prioritize and manage my time wisely. Being part of a team has given me a support system and a group of people who share my passion for sports. This has helped me feel connected and motivated, both in sports and in my academic pursuits. Students Impacted by Incarceration Scholarship
Growing up, I was always taught to respect authority and stay out of trouble. Despite these lessons, I have come face to face with incarceration, either through my family members or acquaintances that were incarcerated, or even just through my awareness of the criminal justice system. This experience, while not positive, has been formative in showing how the process of incarceration can shape the lives of persons caught in the system and how it has an impact on academic and career ambitions. Through examining my own life and my experiences with incarceration, I have come to understand the significant burden it can place on individuals and their future dreams. Incarceration of citizens has a wide-reaching impact on social and economic stability of a community; according to the Bureau of Justice Statistics, about 2.3 million people in the United States were behind bars as of 2018 (U.S. Dept. of Justice, 2019). This high incarceration rate leads to a breakdown of families and communities due to displacement of family members and limits economic and social stability of those who have been incarcerated (King et al., 2018). The limited job prospects that come with a criminal record created by incarceration make it difficult for these individuals to become more self-reliant and financially independent, thus creating further imbalance in the community. Therefore, it is essential for communities to analyze the effects of high incarceration rates and work towards finding solutions like providing job training and creating Second Chance laws (Kesselheim, 2018). Incarceration has long been used as a way to reduce crime, yet it also has a variety of social and economic impacts, both direct and indirect. According to the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), incarceration takes family members away from their loved ones, making it difficult to maintain social stability. In addition, the economic cost of incarcerating a person is substantial and can burden state and federal budgets (ACLU, 2017). This can lead to resources being taken away from other areas of government spending that could potentially benefit the community, such as education and welfare assistance. Furthermore, ex-offenders may also struggle to find employment, as potential employers may be hesitant to take a chance on them due to their criminal record. This, in turn, can lead to public assistance or a reliance on interpersonal support networks, putting further pressure on already strained families (The Sentencing Project, 2016). While incarceration is an important tool in ensuring public safety, its social and economic impacts can have long-term, damaging effects, reinforcing a cycle of recidivism.

As a high school student, volunteering has had a significant impact on my mindset and the way I view the world. Before I started volunteering, I was largely focused on my own interests and goals, and while I cared about others, I didn't really think about how I could make a difference in the world. Through volunteering, I've come to realize that there are so many different ways that I can make a positive impact on my community and on the world. Whether it's helping out at a local food bank, participating in beach cleanups, or simply lending a listening ear to someone who needs it, I've learned that even the smallest actions can make a big difference. One of the most powerful aspects of volunteering for me has been the opportunity to connect with people from all different walks of life. By working with people who come from different backgrounds and experiences, I've gained a much deeper understanding and appreciation for diversity and inclusion. I've also learned that everyone has something valuable to contribute, and that everyone has the potential to make a positive impact on the world. In addition to connecting with others and making a difference in the world, volunteering has also helped me to develop a number of valuable skills and qualities. I've learned to work as part of a team, to communicate effectively with others, and to be more empathetic and understanding. These skills have not only helped me to be a better volunteer, but they have also helped me to be a better person in general. Overall, volunteering has changed my mindset in a number of ways. It has opened my eyes to the many different ways that I can make a positive impact on the world, and it has helped me to develop valuable skills and qualities that will serve me well throughout my life. I am grateful for the opportunity to volunteer, and I hope to continue doing so for many years to come. Participating in track and field at my high school, LSU Laboratory School, has graciously given me the opportunity to continue my athletic and academic career at the Division 1 collegiate level. As a result of this, I have been able commit to Colgate University in Hamilton, New York for track and field; a very prestigious university. With this opportunity I have been given, I plan and aspire to major in Economics, a thriving and very popular field. In addition to this, I plan to minor in General Finance or Business to become more well rounded in my field. With this Economics major and Finance or Business minor, occupations such as being an economist, financial manager, market research analyst, financial advisor, and countless others are possible. These degrees can open tons and tons of doors in the so called "money market." You may be wondering or asking yourself: "How would working in the business or finance field make the world a better place?" Well, the answer to this very question can be found in this quote. Connecting this to Matshona Dhilwayo's quote, the way I carry myself now and interact with others make a positive impact on the world. Continuing this in the future, meeting hundreds to thousands of more people can help me make a greater, more significant positive impact . It may seem insignificant, but smiling is contagious. Being kind is contagious. A positive impact is contagious. Making the world a "better place" is not some ginormous or grand task. Creating a positive impact on the world should be mundane. A day to day task. In my life I have, and plan on continuing, been and shining a bright light wherever I go, to whoever I meet. As famously said by Scott Adams, "There's no such thing as a small act of kindness. Every act creates a ripple with no logical end." If I create a glimmer of positivity in someone's life, they would continue to pass this positivity on. Making the world a better place. With no logical end.

As a high school student, my goals for my medical career include providing high-quality care to patients and making a positive impact on the healthcare system. I believe it is important and necessary to increase racial diversity in healthcare because diversity leads to better outcomes for hospital patients and a more equitable healthcare system. One of my primary goals as a future medical professional is to provide compassionate and effective care to patients from a multitude of backgrounds. I want to be able to connect with patients on a personal level and understand their unique needs and experiences. I believe that by providing personalized care, I can help improve patients' health and well being. In addition to providing high-quality care, I also want to make a positive impact on the healthcare system as a whole. I believe that healthcare should be accessible and affordable for everyone, regardless of their income or social status. I want to work towards making the healthcare system more equitable and efficient so that all patients can receive the care they need. Another important goal of mine is to increase racial diversity in healthcare. I believe that diversity is essential for providing effective care to all patients, as it allows healthcare professionals to better understand and meet the needs of patients from different backgrounds. By increasing the number of African American healthcare professionals, we can improve the quality of care for these patients and reduce health disparities. Furthermore, diversity in healthcare can also help to combat bias and discrimination in the medical system. By having a more diverse workforce, we can ensure that all patients are treated with respect and dignity, regardless of their race or ethnicity. This can help to create a more inclusive and equitable healthcare system, where all patients receive the care they need. In conclusion, my goals for my medical career are to provide high-quality care to patients and to make a positive impact on the healthcare system. Furthermore, I am researching and comparing different colleges and universities to find the best fit for me academically and financially. This includes looking at the cost of tuition, fees, and living expenses, as well as any financial aid and scholarship opportunities available. I am also considering attending a community college for the first two years before transferring to a four-year university to save on tuition costs. Lastly, I am planning to work part-time during the school year and full-time during the summer to save money for college expenses. I am also considering taking out federal student loans, but only as a last resort and only in an amount that I can reasonably afford to pay back after graduation. Overall, I am committed to being proactive and responsible in addressing my future student loan debt as a high school student. I am focused on earning good grades, exploring career options, researching colleges, and saving money to minimize the amount of debt I may have to take on in the future.

The phenomenon of people within online gaming forums discarding the commonly accepted social norms of civil discourse and actions is a widespread and well-documented issue. Many people, myself included, have experienced this firsthand while participating in online gaming forums. The anonymity provided by the internet, coupled with the often-competitive nature of online gaming, can create an environment where people feel emboldened to behave in ways that they would not in face-to-face interactions. One of the most notable effects of this phenomenon is the prevalence of toxic behavior within online gaming forums. This can take many forms, such as harassment, bullying, and trolling. Such behavior not only ruins the experience of other players, but it can also have serious consequences for the individuals who are targeted. In extreme cases, it can even lead to mental health issues such as anxiety and depression. In addition to the negative impact on individuals, this phenomenon also has wider social implications. As people spend more time interacting with others online, it can become increasingly difficult for them to navigate real-life social interactions. This is because the norms and expectations of online gaming forums are often very different from those of real-life social interactions. For example, people may be accustomed to using aggressive or confrontational language online, but this can be seen as rude or inappropriate in face-to-face interactions. Another effect of this phenomenon is the normalization of toxic behavior. As more and more people engage in such behavior online, it becomes seen as more acceptable, and thus more prevalent. This can create a feedback loop where the more toxic behavior is seen, the more people engage in it, leading to even more toxic behavior. Overall, the phenomenon of people within online gaming forums discarding the commonly accepted social norms of civil discourse and actions is a major issue with serious consequences for both individuals and society as a whole. It is important for people to be aware of this issue and to take steps to address it, whether by standing up to toxic behavior when they see it or by seeking out more positive and inclusive online communities.

At Colgate University, I plan on majoring in Economics, a popular and thriving field. In addition to this major, I aspire to minor in finance to become well-rounded in the field. Though only a high school student, I have had many opportunities to impact the world, someone's life, and my own life in a positive way. One example of this when I showed bravery and courage was when I stood up to a bully who was harassing one of my classmates at school. At the time, I was a freshman in high school and I saw a classmate being bullied by a group of older students. I knew that what they were doing was wrong and I could not just be a bystander and watch. I gathered up my courage and approached the group of bullies, standing up to them and demanding they stop. At first, the bullies laughed at my attempt and tried to intimidate me, however, I stood my ground and refused to back down. Eventually, they realized that I was not going to be scared off by their tactics and they left my classmate alone. My classmate was extremely grateful and he thanked me for standing up to them for him. This experience taught me the importance of standing up for what is right and what I believe in, even in the face of fear and intimidation. It also taught me the value of courage and bravery and the positive impact that these qualities can have on the world and in the lives of others. In addition to standing up to the bullies, I have also had the opportunity to help others in a multitude of various ways. For example, I have volunteered at local shelters and food banks, helping to provide food and support to those in need. I have also participated in community clean-up efforts and other environmental initiatives, helping to protect and preserve our beautiful natural world. In high school, I helped to organize a fundraiser that raised over $2,000 for a local animal shelter. Through this event, I was able to help provide resources and shelter to animals that needed it most. Additionally, I have also spent time volunteering at a soup kitchen. There, I was able to interact with people in my community and make a difference in their lives by providing them with much-needed meals. These experiences have had a profound impact on my own life as well. They have taught me the value of service and selflessness, and the importance of giving back to my community and others. Serving my community has also taught me to see the world from the different perspectives of others. In conclusion, I have had many opportunities to impact the world, someone's life, and my own life in a positive way. Through acts of bravery and courage, and through selfless service to others, I have been able to make a difference and to leave a positive mark

As a high school track and field athlete, I have faced many challenges and obstacles in my career. From injuries to personal struggles, I have had to overcome a lot to continue competing at a high level. However, these challenges have also helped shape my view of the future and have taught me valuable lessons about perseverance and determination. One of the biggest challenges I have faced as an athlete is dealing with injuries. In my sophomore year, I suffered a serious ankle injury that kept me out of competition for several months. It was a difficult and frustrating time for me, as I had to miss out on important meets and training opportunities. But I stayed positive and worked hard to rehab my injury, eventually making a full recovery. Another challenge I have faced is the pressure to perform at a high level. As a track and field athlete, there is always pressure to succeed and compete against the best. This pressure can be overwhelming at times, but I have learned to focus on my own performance and not worry about what others are doing. This has helped me stay focused and motivated and has allowed me to continue improving and reaching my goals. One of the biggest lessons I have learned from these challenges is the importance of perseverance. In sports, as in life, there will always be obstacles and setbacks. As a high school track and field athlete, I have faced numerous challenges and obstacles in my athletic career. From injuries to personal setbacks, I have had to overcome adversity in order to continue pursuing my passion for running. One of the biggest challenges I have faced is dealing with injuries. As a runner, it is almost inevitable that at some point I will suffer from some sort of injury. Whether it is a strained muscle, a sprained ankle, or even a stress fracture, injuries can derail my training and prevent me from competing at my best. However, I have learned that dealing with injuries is all about perseverance and determination. When I suffer from an injury, I do not let it defeat me. Instead, I work closely with my coaches and trainers to develop a plan for recovery. I focus on rehabilitating my injury and maintaining my fitness through alternative forms of training, such as swimming or cycling. And I stay positive and motivated, knowing that with hard work and dedication, I will be back on the track soon. Another challenge I have had to overcome is the pressure and expectations that come with being a high school athlete. As a member of the track and field team, I am expected to perform at a high level and help my team succeed. This can be a lot of pressure, especially when I am competing against other athletes who are just as talented and determined as I am. However, I have learned to manage this pressure by setting realistic goals for myself and focusing on the process, rather than the outcome. I remind myself that I am not racing against anyone else, but rather against my own limitations. I focus on giving my best effort in every race and trust that if I do that, the results will take care of themselves. And I remind myself that even if I don't win every race, I am still learning and growing as an athlete, which is just as important. Finally, I have had to overcome personal setbacks and obstacles in my pursuit of running. Whether it is a difficult class schedule that limits my training time, a lack of support from friends or family, or even my own self-doubt, I have had to overcome these challenges in order to continue pursuing my passion for running. But I have learned that no obstacle is too great to overcome. I have learned to manage my time effectively and prioritize my training. I have learned to surround myself with supportive people who believe in me and my abilities. And I have learned to trust in myself and my abilities, even when I am facing challenges or setbacks. Overall, running high school track and field has taught me the importance of perseverance, determination, and resilience. I have learned that no matter how difficult the challenges may be, I can overcome them with hard work, dedication, and a positive attitude. And I will continue to strive for excellence in track and field, knowing that with each challenge I overcome, I am becoming a stronger, more resilient athlete.

As a high school student, I know that managing your finances is an essential part of successfully navigating life, college, and beyond. Finances can affect your ability to pay tuition, secure housing, purchase books, afford food, and pay for a multitude of other necessities. Good financial management can also help you avoid taking on debt and ensure you have the resources to pursue your academic goals. The first step in managing your finances is creating a budget. This process involves assessing your income and expenses and allocating your money to cover necessary expenses, such as tuition and rent, as well as saving for future goals. Budgeting as a student is one of the best financial habits you can form early on in life. It’s a great way to ensure you’re making the most of your money and setting yourself up for long-term success. It allows you to prioritize the things that are important to you and make sure you can afford them. It also allows you to save for the future, by setting aside a portion of your income for retirement, college tuition, and other long-term goals. Budgeting also allows you to track your spending and make adjustments as needed, so you can stay on top of where your money is going and make sure you’re getting the most out of it. In addition to budgeting, students should also consider tracking their expenses. Tracking your spending helps you identify areas where you can save money and make adjustments to your budget accordingly. This can also help you identify patterns in your spending, such as how much you are spending on dining out or entertainment. Finally, students should consider setting up a savings account. A savings account can help you save for larger expenses, such as textbooks or housing deposits. It can also help you prepare for unexpected expenses, such as medical bills or emergency car repairs. Additionally, having good financial management skills can help you prepare for the future and set yourself up for success after college.

At Colgate University, I plan on majoring in Economics, a popular and thriving field. In addition to this major, I aspire to minor in finance to become well-rounded in the field. As famously said by English composer and musical conductor Colin R. Davis: "The road to success and the road to failure are almost exactly the same." To me, this quote means that your success is based on your small, seemingly harmless choices. Choices drive your life, character, and ultimately who you are as a person. Sure, I could choose to party, act recklessly, and not take care of my school work at Colgate University, but that path to failure is faster than Usain Bolt. In order to succeed in every endeavor at Colgate U, a very prestigious institution, hard work, determination, cooperation, and the ability to find motivation in spite of "darkness" is required. Though a challenging path to embark on, an economic and finance degree opens tons upon tons of doors for a potential career path whether it be in stocks, marketing, finance, management, or general business. THIS is why pursuing higher education is important to me. The list of benefits of an economics degree from Colgate University is very vast. Job opportunities will come abundantly and almost immediately after graduation as I learned from Colgate U graduates while visiting. Yes, life-long friendships, connections, and relationships, in general, come from almost any university in the world. However, the difference between those schools and Colgate U is the connection between the students and alumni, which is tight-knit and personal. Internships (including paid), work studies, and ultimately full-time jobs have been offered to rising Colgate University graduates from the alumni in their major or field. However, the next step after achieving my goal of graduating college and receiving a college degree is to implement my acquired knowledge into my father's small business. A car dealership. Using my degree, I could become the financial manager of the business. My family's dream is to make the dealership an empire. Locations and car lots across the country, building generational wealth for my siblings and me. As said by the toy, Buzz Lightyear, "TO INFINITY AND BEYOND!"

Norman H. Becker Integrity and Honor Scholarship
As said famously by C.S. Lewis, "Integrity is doing the right thing, even when no one is watching." To me, having integrity means acting in a way that is consistent with my values and principles, even when no one is watching. It means being honest, transparent, and trustworthy in all of my actions and decisions. Having integrity means being true to myself and others. It means being honest in all of my interactions, and being willing to admit when I am wrong or have made a mistake. It also means being consistent in my actions and decisions, and following through on my commitments. I believe that having integrity is essential for building trust and respect in relationships. When we are honest and transparent with others, we create a foundation of trust that allows us to work together effectively and achieve our goals. One example of how I have exercised and displayed integrity in my life is by always being truthful, even when the truth may be difficult to share or may cause conflict. Lying to friends, parents, and those you love may often seem like an easy way out, but I believe that honesty is a fundamental part of building trust and respect in relationships, and I strive to always be open and sincere with others. Another example is by standing up for what I believe in, even when it is unpopular or goes against the norm. I believe in treating others with kindness and respect, and I have spoken out against and defended those being bullied and discriminated against whenever I have witnessed it. I have also demonstrated integrity in my academic and athletic pursuits. Collaboration & Diversity in Healthcare Scholarship
Collaboration and diversity are essential in advancing the healthcare and medical field for several reasons. Firstly, collaboration allows for the sharing of ideas and expertise, leading to a more comprehensive and effective approach to healthcare. This can be particularly important in complex cases, where multiple specialists may be required to provide the best possible care. Furthermore, diversity brings a range of perspectives and experiences to the table, allowing for more innovative and inclusive solutions to healthcare challenges. For instance, a team with diverse backgrounds and experiences may be able to identify and address healthcare disparities more effectively than a homogenous group. In my future work in the healthcare field, I plan to prioritize collaboration and diversity by actively seeking out opportunities to work with individuals from a range of backgrounds and expertise. I also plan to prioritize inclusivity in my interactions with patients, ensuring that everyone has a voice and is treated with respect and empathy. One past experience I had in working in a collaborative setting that helped me reach a pivotal stage of success was during a group project in high school. Our team consisted of individuals with different ideals and skill sets, which allowed us to bring a range of perspectives to the project. Through regular communication and collaboration, we were able to identify and address challenges and come up with a comprehensive and successful final product. Another example of this cooperation is my high school track team. Collaboration and diversity on our high school track team played a crucial role in achieving our goal of a state championship. By bringing together a diverse group of athletes with different strengths and skills, we were able to create a well-rounded team with a strong overall performance. Through collaboration, we were able to develop strategies that took advantage of each individual's strengths and weaknesses and worked together to support and motivate one another. This diversity also helped us to develop a deep understanding and respect for each other, which fostered a strong team dynamic that allowed us to push ourselves to the limit and reach our full potential. Ultimately, this collaboration and diversity helped us to rise above the competition and achieve our goal of a state championship. Overall, collaboration and diversity are crucial in advancing the healthcare and medical field, as they allow for a more comprehensive and inclusive approach to healthcare. In my future work, I plan to prioritize these values in order to provide the best possible care to patients.

Participating in track and field at my high school, LSU Laboratory School, has graciously given me the opportunity to continue my athletic and academic career at the Division 1 collegiate level. As a result of this, I have been able commit to Colgate University in Hamilton, New York for track and field; a very prestigious university. With this opportunity I have been given, I plan and aspire to major in Economics (a social science field), a thriving and very popular field.

HVAC. Heating, ventilation, and air conditioning. This is the trade I want to learn. I would like to study this trade at ITI Technical College. HVAC is one of the most sustainable and growing trades as of right now! As stated by the BLS or Bureau of Labor Statistics, "the heating, ventilation, and air conditioning technician employment is expected to increase by 15 percent through 2026. The continuing growth of construction, both commercial and residential, is a factor in the projected growth, in addition to the increasing prevalence of service contracts." Not only is the HVAC industry a great and sustainable trade to learn and career to embark on, but it can help make the world a better place. I am severely allergic to a multitude of foods and chemicals found in everyday items. The expansive list consists of corn, peanuts, wheat, certain types of grass, certain types of trees, fire-ants, and all tree nuts. At the age of six in the first grade, I had a life threatening anaphylactic allergic reaction. Prior to this day, me or my parents had absolutely NO CLUE that I even had allergies or was susceptible to such a fate. I was playing freeze tag on the playground at recess. I sprinted from the "it" person, weaving in, out, and through the other children scrambling around the open field. Panting, I stopped to catch my breath behind a tree. Somehow, someway, I was tagged by the "it" player. Frozen. In an ant pile. After the game, we returned to the classroom and resumed our daily lessons. While going around the table reading our Flat Stanley books, a classmate of mine asked me, "Joshua, what's wrong with your face?" Her name was Morgan. This question raised the attention of our student teacher, Ms. Breeland. Immediately upon seeing my face, Ms. Breeland raced me to the nurse's office. My dangling body flying in the air behind her as she ran. This is where my memory gets foggy. I remember the school nurse icing the hives that were sprouting from my skin. I remember the nurse using a tongue depressor to open my airways. After that, I remember waking up in a hospital bed. Even though I was young, this experience was very frightening for me and changed how I lived my life forever. Being allergic to certain foods did not bother me too much. However, being allergic to types of grass and fire ants meant I could no longer play football. The risk of playing on the wrong fields or accidentally landing in an ant pile prohibited me from playing the sport I was starting to love. Obviously, this devastated me and even bothers me a little to this day because I constantly wonder what could have been. However, I did not let this hinderance deny me positivity or joy in my life. Just last year, I began running track and field.
Ethel Hayes Destigmatization of Mental Health Scholarship
As writer, philosopher, and DJ Aisha Mirza famously said: "It is not the bruises on the body that hurt. It is the wounds of the heart and the scars on the mind." This quote is best exemplified by my time playing American football. In the forth grade, at the young age of nine, I began my football "career." Up until 8th grade, I just saw football as a fun activity that allowed me to spend quality time with my friends outside of school and stay in shape. Additionally, I believe playing football at such a young age instilled important values and lessons in me. Values and skills such as listening, cooperation, determination, discipline, and countless others were taught to and branded into me not only by my parents and other family members, but also my football coaches. However, in 9th grade, "real" football began. Football with Junior Varsity and Varsity teams. Football with chosen rosters and depth charts. REAL FOOTBALL. With this addition, I had to pick up the intensity of my workouts and begin developing true athleticism and skills that would allow me to contribute to the team. My freshman year went as many would expect: not much playing time. This, I was okay with because none of my peers played a significant amount on the Varsity team either. My sophomore year, the head coach allowed me to begin practicing with the varsity team, which really boosted my hopes and confidence for that season. Unfortunately, I did not receive any of the varsity playing time I was led on to believe I would get. This is where my mental health problems began. I felt less than, unworthy, and just depressed. My peers and other sophomore teammates were finally getting their well earned playing time; however I did not, despite my hard work in and out of practice. I studied the playbook, ran and conditioned outside of practice, and even met with the coaches to ask what I could do to improve. My junior year season was EVEN WORSE! Being a junior on the junior varsity team with freshman and sophomores was a huge slap in the face for me. I began to not talk to my other junior teammates, and I developed a hatred for the head coach who continuously led me on. Not only was I not getting varsity playing time, but the time wasted by practicing with the varsity team took its toll on my body. My sophomore year, I dislocated my shoulder and broke my left ring finger during the season. My junior year, I stress fractured a bone in my right foot. These injuries left me more empty than before. However, Mirza's quote remained to be true. These physical injuries were nothing compared to the mental anguish and disrespect I felt during my high school career. Junior year was also the year I quit football. The following two months after quitting, I didn’t know what would come next for me or what to do. I knew I needed to play a sport for two reasons. One: stay active, and two: stay happy. Around March, the Indoor Track and Field team won the state championship. Boom! I knew what to do. It was a neat coincidence my grandfather, dad, and brothers all did track and field in high school or college, so it seemed right for me to carry the baton. Long story short, I had an exceptional season, even running at the outdoor state championship meet! This whole experience showed me I still have my whole life ahead of me. Everything you know, worked for, and even your goals can flip on their heads. My mental health has greatly improved since my sophomore year and I believe track and field is a path I want to pursue.

The book that has transformed my life is a classic. Because no one cares for the classics. Best said by the famous author Mark Twain, "Classic’ – a book which people praise and don’t read." My favorite book should NOT be a classic! This inspiring and heart wrenching story should be taught in schools and spread across the globe. Ever since I was a very, very young child, my favorite book has always been an obscure and often unknown one. A book that has transformed my life is a children's book based on the 1988 Disney film "Oliver and Company," entitled (you guessed it) "Oliver and Company." Every time I read this book, I fall in love with the story and its characters all over again. While the book itself was my favorite from a young age, the main character, Oliver, influenced me the most. The naiveness of Oliver, his ability to forgive, his free spirit, and his love for others are qualities I have and still do identify with. Once in the forth grade, I witnessed a friend of mine being bullied by a small group of kids simply because he was dyslexic. Like Oliver, I was not the bravest child, in fact, I felt like I had his stature: a small, helpless kitten. However, I still felt terrible for what was happening to my poor friend. However, I had to suck up my fear and give those bullies a piece of my mind. Well, that went nothing as planned because I, myself started to get bullied by them. For the next couple of weeks, we were the victims of these bullies' torment and torture. Fortunately, we were finally able to gather and scrape up the courage to tell not just the teacher, but the assistant principal of our elementary school! The ordeal was extremely large. Parents were brought in, but ultimately the chaos was resolved. Now, I'd be lying if I said I immediately forgave my bullies, but I wouldn't be if I said that we were the tightest-knit group of friends ever going into our freshman year of high school. The kindness, love, and care-free spirit of Oliver is what I saw in myself those years ago and is what I strive for everyday to please my younger self. Obstacles and adversities will inevitability come, but as famously sang by that cute, loveable orange cat, "Why should I worry!"

Participating in track and field at my high school, LSU Laboratory School, has graciously given me the opportunity to continue my athletic and academic career at the Division 1 collegiate level. As a result of this, I have been able commit to Colgate University in Hamilton, New York for track and field; a very prestigious university. With this opportunity I have been given, I plan and aspire to major in agricultural education, a thriving and very popular field. In addition to this, I plan to minor in agricultural public services to become more well rounded in my field. With this agricultural education major and agricultural public services minor, occupations such as being an agricultural program coordinator, high school agricultural teacher, crop consultant, and countless others are possible. These degrees can open tons and tons of doors in the so called "farm field." You may be wondering or asking yourself: "How would working in the farming field make the world a better place?" Well, the answer to this very question can be found in this quote. As said by famous author and philosopher Matshona Dhilwayo, "One smile, one hug, one handshake, one word, can change the world." The education path and agricultural industry involves a numerous amount of interactions, introductions, conversations, and other forms of communication in the workplace. For example, working for global agricultural corporations could create connections with the rich, elite, and most influential members of our society.

Thank you, Cat Zingano, for the opportunity to share my grandfather's story and how it impacted me.

I am a successful varsity track and field athlete at my high school, University Laboratory School in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. THIS is why learning and receiving my degree is important to me. The list of benefits of an economics degree from Colgate University is very vast. Job opportunities will come abundantly and almost immediately after graduation as I learned from Colgate U graduates while visiting. Yes, life-long friendships, connections, and relationships in general come from almost any university in the world. However, the difference from those schools and Colgate U is the connection between the students and alumni, which is tight-knit and personal. Internships (including paid), work studies, and ultimately full time jobs have been offered to rising Colgate University graduates from the alumni in their major or field. However, the next step after achieving my goal of graduating college and receiving a college degree is to implement my acquired knowledge into my father's small business. A car dealership. The steady changing and growing industry would require studying and learning to master. Using my degree and newfound knowledge of the industry, I could become the financial manager of the business. My family's dream is to make the dealership an empire. Locations and car lots across the country, building generational wealth for my siblings and me. As famously said by Indian journalist Anil Sinha, "Life is meant to be joyful, fun, adventurous, meaningful and exciting." Participating in track and field at my high school, LSU Laboratory School, has graciously given me the opportunity to continue my athletic and academic career at the Division 1 collegiate level. What I am looking forward to most about attending Colgate University is change. Coming from Louisiana, the move to New York will be a very exhilarating time in my life. Change, in regards to people, places, and freedoms is normal for the college experience, but my heart skips a beat from excitement and nervousness when I think of moving onto campus. While on a visit to Colgate, I was able to meet my future track and field teammates, who were all very friendly and inviting people. I am excited to create new relationships and build lifelong connections with not only my teammates, but my professors, other peers, coaches, and even Colgate University alumni. However, the path to such a prestigious degree is not all sunshine and rainbows. The difficulty, obstacles, and struggles of classes and life in general are inevitable. Even now, I face challenges in ALL my endeavors, sometimes even senseless problems. I use track and field as therapy and an outlet. The still, quietness of the track in the evening is what I look forward to everyday. Nothing but myself, my thoughts, and my legs; ready embark on that day's challenging workout. Track and field keeps my mind sound, my body fit, and my soul at peace. Most of all assisting in my mental health is God. Without him, I know I am nothing and I am eternally grateful for the gifts he bestowed upon me. Challenges in life are certain. Guaranteed. However, it's how we react to these adversities that define who we are, and the caliber of our success. Yes, I am nervous and excited for college, but by maintaining a healthy mind, body, and soul, I know I have nothing to fear and everything to look forward to.
