Janean D. Watkins Overcoming Adversity Scholarship
By the age of twelve, I had experienced the loss of three out of my four grandparents, with both grandmothers, who played pivotal roles in my upbringing, succumbing to various illnesses within a year. In my perspective, the valuable lessons derived from overcoming such obstacles often serve as the foundation for subsequent achievements. This principle manifested in my life through the creation of 'Soleclick.' The genesis of this venture traces back to my participation in the Morehouse School of Medicine summer camp program when, inspired by the loss of my loved ones, I conceived an idea for an app dedicated to saving lives step by step. This innovative concept not only won first place but showcased the resilience and creativity summoned to address the challenges at hand, all at the tender age of fourteen.
Our journey faced a significant hurdle early on, grappling with time constraints during camp hours and the need for online collaboration. While other groups benefited from in-person interactions due to geographical proximity, my team navigated the challenge of coordinating efforts across three different locations – Tampa, Florida (my location), and Atlanta and California (the locations of my partners). The differences in time zones necessitated unconventional meeting hours. Moreover, being the youngest group, composed solely of ninth graders, added another layer of complexity. Despite these challenges, we pressed forward, brainstorming ideas until settling on the concept of Sole Click, an app designed to aid the elderly in staying safe and mobile. I took charge of idea development and presentation design, drawing inspiration from the memories of my grandmothers.
Our collective efforts culminated in a compelling pitch delivered to an audience of over 50 Morehouse alumni and board members, resulting in a first-place victory. This not only validated our innovative solution but also extended an invitation to continue developing our app. Reflecting on this experience, it is clear that the personal challenges I faced with the loss of my grandmothers played a crucial role in shaping my leadership and adaptability skills. This endeavor served as my introduction to the competitive realm of academic challenges, fostering resilience and effective communication strategies. The process of leveraging individual strengths within the team emerged as a key takeaway, setting the stage for future endeavors. The skills honed during this period at Morehouse served as a launching pad for my entrepreneurial journey.
Inspired by this experience, I initiated my own chess camp that same year, starting with teaching my cousins, then neighborhood children, and now underprivileged children at group homes how to play chess. The pivotal lesson learned was the art of transforming weaknesses into strengths and turning setbacks into victories.
In conclusion, the adversity of losing two loved ones to illness transformed into steering a collaborative online project for a prestigious institution to help people in a similar state as my grandmothers. By strategically leveraging diverse skill sets, adapting to circumstances, and embracing setbacks as opportunities, I contributed to securing our victory, laying the groundwork for future successes. This experience became a foundational chapter in my personal and entrepreneurial development, emphasizing the transformative power of resilience and strategic thinking.

Throughout my life, the journey of a military family has woven a tapestry of adaptability and resilience into the fabric of my character. Enduring eight relocations across three states due to my father's military service, I navigated a mosaic of educational environments—from homeschooling to public and private schools—imbibing the values of adaptability and a robust work ethic.
One pivotal move, in the summer before middle school in Tampa, Florida, epitomizes the challenges and triumphs of my transient lifestyle. Faced with the need to swiftly adapt to a new academic system and establish connections, I proactively engaged with my classmates, finding solace and camaraderie in the chess club. This decision not only ignited my passion for the game but also forged connections with like-minded students, laying the foundation for transformative experiences ahead.
Immersing myself in the chess club, I witnessed its unifying power across diverse backgrounds. This inspiration led to the establishment of my chess camp, starting modestly but expanding into a series of successful camps and tournaments. Motivated by a desire to give back, I extended my reach to Jamaica, establishing a chess club for orphaned children, experiencing firsthand the impact of merging passion with entrepreneurship.
These experiences underscored the importance of determination and resilience. Establishing and growing my business demanded meticulous planning, countless late nights, unwavering commitment, and an unyielding work ethic, influencing not only my academic pursuits but also shaping my character.
As a military child, I cultivated resilience, adaptability, and versatility, crucial skills in ever-changing environments. This prowess not only benefited my chess camp and school projects but also manifested in my role as a camp counselor at the YMCA, where I connected with children from diverse backgrounds, reinforcing my belief in the transformative power of connection.
These diverse experiences molded me into someone who values hard work, perseverance, meaningful connections, and strives to lead and create positive change. Entering Howard University, I am poised to contribute my unique perspective, tenacity, and passion to its diverse community and rich educational environment.
In my future career, I aim to leverage these experiences to foster unity, promote resilience, and create meaningful connections. This scholarship represents not just financial support but a validation of my journey and potential contributions. My long-term goals include becoming a catalyst for positive change in communities, utilizing my skills to bridge gaps and uplift those facing adversity.
Reflecting on a time of physical or emotional weakness, I recall moments of uncertainty during relocation, facing the unknown. However, each challenge strengthened my resolve, teaching me the power of adaptability and resilience. Overcoming these situations involved seeking support, finding inner strength, and learning to thrive in the face of adversity. These experiences shaped my character, reinforcing my commitment to perseverance and fortitude in the pursuit of personal and professional growth.
Colby R. Eggleston and Kyla Lee Entrepreneurship Award
Chess serves as a profound metaphor for life, emphasizing the importance of strategic thinking and thoughtful decision-making. The game has not only become a beloved hobby but also a powerful tool that has influenced my life journey, particularly in the realm of entrepreneurship and community engagement.
Introduced to chess during middle school, I initially joined the chess club as a way to pass the time and connect socially with peers. However, the game quickly became a passion, leading me to compete in various tournaments, including the Chess Nationals during the summer. As the pandemic hit, I transitioned to online play, realizing the untapped potential of my skills.
Motivated by my love for chess and a desire to share its benefits, I leveraged my passion to establish a chess camp. The camp aimed not only to teach the game but also to impart strategic skills, fostering both personal and intellectual growth. The camp, conducted both online and in person, attracted participants locally and beyond, connecting enthusiasts through an online platform.
The success of the chess camp allowed me to make my first significant purchase and inspired a broader mission. I expanded the camp to Jamaica during a mission trip, teaching disadvantaged orphans how to play chess. This initiative served as a positive outlet for the children, enhancing their mental strength and fostering a sense of community. The funds generated from the camp were reinvested in community outreach, highlighting the dual impact of the business on personal development and social welfare.
Chess has been more than a hobby; it has been a vehicle for personal relaxation, creative expression, and community service. Recognizing its potential, I see an opportunity to establish a chess-focused business in my local community. The business would include chess classes, workshops, and tournaments, both in-person and online, catering to individuals of all ages and skill levels.
To develop this business, I would start by conducting market research to gauge the level of interest and identify potential collaborators or partners within the community. Establishing an online presence through a dedicated website or social media platforms would be crucial for reaching a broader audience. Collaborating with local schools, community centers, and youth organizations could help promote the business and facilitate outreach programs.
Additionally, I would explore partnerships with local businesses to sponsor tournaments or provide resources for community events, enhancing the overall impact. Offering scholarships or discounted rates for underprivileged individuals would ensure inclusivity and contribute to the general welfare of the community.
In conclusion, my envisioned chess-focused business aims to combine my passion for the game with a commitment to community development. By providing educational opportunities, fostering strategic thinking, and contributing to positive mental well-being, the business would make a meaningful and lasting impact on the general welfare of my local community.
William A. Stuart Dream Scholarship
In 2021, my love for law was awakened. I attended a week-long competitive law camp at George-Mason and was introduced to the vast world of legal procedures. Throughout the camp, my peers and I were given several different cases to solve, individually and as a team using realistic law procedures. I was also able to participate in multiple mock trials. We spoke to and were mentored by several top lawyers in the DC area and even heard from John Douglas, a FBI profiler. During camp, I particularly enjoyed the process of preparing for mock trials and researching the rules and regulations that were affiliated with our case. After this experience, I was confident in my decision to pursue a career as a lawyer. Not only does the career path seem exciting and interesting, but I quickly observed how working in the legal field gives you a chance to make a difference in the lives of others. Many of the lawyers who spoke to us during the came, dedicated their time and used their platform and career to help their community and facilitate a positive impact.
Motivated by this profound experience and a desire to make a more immediate impact within my own community in Tampa, Florida, I decided to merge my passion for chess with a desire to contribute to society. I established a chess camp for younger children in my neighborhood, offering me a platform to connect with young minds and impart valuable skills. In addition to the mental outlet that the chess camp provided, it also positively translated into the children's academic performance and taught them priceless lifelong values.
Just as my chess camp has enabled me to utilize my hobby to create a positive impact and teach a valuable mental game, I am determined to leverage my future career to influence and improve lives as well. Looking ahead, I envision a future where I not only attain personal success and financial stability but also actively engage in continuous community engagement, particularly with the youth. I plan to attend a university with a prestigious law program. I plan to earn internships throughout my college experience. Following college my goal is to secure a full-time position at a reputable law firm, establishing a solid foundation for my career. Within the first five years of practicing law, I am committed to launching a camp or program dedicated to helping children explore and discover their own entrepreneurial passions and interests. By providing them with essential resources and guidance, my aim is to empower young individuals to pursue fulfilling lives and unlock their full potential. Ultimately, I aim to combine my passion and profession to create a positive impact in my community and empower children to achieve their dreams.

My journey into the world of business and finance began with a simple but transformative experience during my time at Morehouse School of Medicine. This experience not only taught me valuable lessons about overcoming obstacles but also set the foundation for my future endeavors in making a positive impact on the world through my business and finance career.
The challenge presented to my group was to create an app that would thrive in today's economy. Despite being the youngest and geographically dispersed, my partners and I decided to take on this challenge head-on. We understood that our limitations in terms of physical proximity and age could either be a hindrance or an opportunity to demonstrate resilience and creativity. We chose the latter.
Our app, "Soul Click," aimed to address a critical issue: helping the elderly stay safe and mobile. While my teammates delved into the technical aspects of app design, I recognized that my strengths lay elsewhere. I took charge of idea development and presentation design, leveraging my skills in communication and creativity. By harnessing our unique strengths, we were able to complement each other effectively.
One of the most significant takeaways from this experience was the development of leadership and flexibility skills. We had to adapt to our circumstances, working across different time zones and meeting at unconventional hours. This challenge pushed us to be resourceful, efficient, and collaborative. It was my first taste of competitive academic life, and it taught me that success requires not only hard work but also the ability to navigate and thrive in less-than-ideal situations.
Moreover, this experience honed my communication skills. Effectively conveying our ideas and vision to over 50 Morehouse alumni and board members was no small feat. Learning to articulate our project's value proposition and engage our audience was a vital skill that I continue to utilize in my business and finance career.
Winning first place in the competition was a validation of our efforts and a testament to our ability to turn adversity into an advantage. This victory not only boosted my confidence but also sparked a desire to pursue entrepreneurial ventures. I realized that challenges are not roadblocks but opportunities for growth and innovation.
As I reflect on this experience, it becomes evident that it laid the groundwork for my future endeavors. I embarked on the path of entrepreneurship, starting my own chess camp. The skills I acquired during that month at Morehouse were instrumental in managing my camp successfully. This experience also ingrained in me the belief that setbacks can be transformed into victories with determination and resilience.
In conclusion, my journey from the Soul Click project to my entrepreneurial ventures has been guided by the invaluable lessons learned during a challenging and transformative experience. It taught me the importance of adaptability, effective communication, and leveraging strengths in a team. My aim in my business and finance career is to use these lessons to not only succeed but also make a positive impact on the world, turning setbacks into wins and helping others do the same. Soleclick, the app that once aimed to help the elderly stay safe and mobile, now serves as a symbol of how obstacles can be fundamental to later success, and I am committed to continuing this journey of positive impact.
