Diversity in Law Scholarship
After receiving my undergraduate degree I started working at a school as a secretary. It was interesting, but after a while I wanted a new kind of pace. So I decided that I wanted a new kind of challenge. I started looking at LSAT Prep books and it was difficult to work full time and study for this exam at the same time. The application process was challenging because I did not have anyone around me who had gone through this. I started attending events at schools that guided you through the process and it started to become more manageable. In addition, I began taking a course to help me prepare for the LSAT. When I started receiving acceptances I was very excited and couldn’t wait to begin my law journey.
I decided to go to law school because I want to help provide low income families with legal services. I am currently working as a law clerk as my summer internship and I am enjoying the work I am doing in immigration. I have recently gotten experience in speaking with clients, research and filling forms. I have benefited before from services that help low income families myself. I understand how desperate someone can be and not have the recourse for legal services. Since I have started law school I have not regretted my decision and found the journey rewarding. There have been challenges and many tears but I am persevering nonetheless.
I want to work in immigration and help immigrant families with their legal situation. It terrifies me that immigrant communities are scared to come forward because of fear. I want to make sure that they know their rights and exercise them. When I was younger, there were instances where my dad was not paid because of his work and was too scarred to come forward. I have seen many injustices in my life, and I want to help as many people as I can. My long term goal would be to one day have my own non-profit organization that provides legal services to those who most need it.
I am in need of financial assistance to continue my legal education. My father is the only income provider in our family. I have only been able to work for a limited amount of hours because law school takes so much of my time, last semester I took 6 classes for two semesters. On occasion I am to go work with my dad on weekends at his job cites. It usually involves me sweeping, or picking up trash. My main motivation is thinking of the day I finish my degree and how excited I am to show them that all of our hard work has paid off. Thank you for your consideration.
