Matthew E. Minor Memorial Scholarship
Growing up as a military child I had to adapt, persevere and rebuild my life in every new place. Moving so often meant I was always starting fresh in school, sports and making friends. It wasn’t always easy but those experiences made me stronger and taught me how important it is to have a sense of community. No matter where I was I found ways to give back whether it was through sports, mentoring or just being a positive presence for the people around me.
As I prepare for college scholarships like this one are crucial. My father’s military service has taught me the meaning of sacrifice and while I’m grateful for everything I’ve had I know that paying for college won’t be easy. Getting financial assistance would take a huge weight off my shoulders so I can focus on my education, my athletic goals and continuing to make an impact in my community.
One of the biggest ways I try to make a difference is by creating a safe and positive space for young people both in real life and online. Cyberbullying is everywhere but I use my social media to spread good energy. Whether it’s through motivational posts, videos or just recognizing the accomplishments of my peers I make sure my content uplifts rather than tears people down. I truly believe that what you put into the world matters and I want to be the kind of person who encourages others to be their best selves.
That same mindset applies to my family. I have two younger sisters and I make sure they know how to stay safe online. I remind them not to visit unfamiliar sites and most importantly to never take part in cyberbullying. I want them to see the internet as a place to learn and connect rather than a space for negativity.
Outside of my home I use my passion for filmmaking and sports to highlight the greatness in others. I create videos that showcase the dedication and achievements of my track teammates and other young athletes. The world already focuses too much on negativity so I make it a point to shine a light on the people who deserve recognition.
I also mentor a middle schooler in the DMV area helping him work through the challenges that come with balancing school, sports and personal struggles. I know how overwhelming it can be to juggle everything at once so I try to offer guidance and support that will help him stay confident and push forward.
At the end of the day I believe a strong community starts with small efforts to lift others up. Whether it’s through my words, my actions or just showing up when it matters I want to make a real impact. This scholarship wouldn’t just help me reach my own goals it would also give me the chance to keep being there for the people who need it most.
