Growing up in the heart of a small rural town in the central valley of California, I, Jolette Espana, am not just a college student at the University of California - San Diego. I am the embodiment of my parents' American dream, a dream rooted in sacrifice and resilience. As the only child born on U.S. soil in a family of Mexican immigrants, I inherited the title of the 'Golden Goose.' While this label initially seemed like a promise of opportunity, I came to realize its weight as I navigated the challenges of being the first in my family to pursue higher education. As an aspiring nanoengineer, I am determined to break barriers and redefine success. This scholarship is not just a financial aid; it's a testament to the unwavering spirit of those who strive to achieve against all odds. In middle school, I encountered a stark contrast to my upbringing when I noticed my peers adorned in expensive attire and the latest iPhones. Fueled by a desire to fit in, I grappled with the realization that I couldn't ask my mother for such luxuries. It was during this time that the impact of my father's deportation began to unveil itself, significantly affecting my family's financial stability. The revelation was heart-wrenching: my mother, already enduring grueling working conditions in the fields and packing houses for minimum wages, was shouldering the burden alone. The sacrifice and resilience she demonstrated became clear, and I learned to appreciate the value of hard-earned money. Her dedication became the compass guiding my choices. Rather than succumb to societal pressures, I recognized the importance of prioritizing financial responsibility. This pivotal moment solidified my gratitude for my mother's relentless efforts and inspired me to pursue a dream that would honor her sacrifices – becoming a nanoengineer. My goal as a nano engineer is to help make the world a better place for all through technology. This scholarship represents more than financial relief; it is a symbol of breaking the cycle, achieving a dream, and proving that adversities can be conquered through perseverance and determination. If awarded, it would not only ease the financial strain of tuition but also validate my mother's sacrifices, allowing her to proudly declare that her daughter is a UCSD nanoengineer graduate. During my high school years, my mother requested only one thing from me, to get good grades. I sought to overachieve, and I became a great student, graduating top 10 of my class, as well as being a student-athlete, as well as being in community college classes in web design. That very web design course sparked my passion to become an engineer, as I realized how much versatility and opportunities technology has to offer in the distant future., which is why I am now in pursuit of a nanoengineering degree. I owe my life to her as she risked hers for mine. My journey has not only been about personal growth but also about breaking generational barriers. My commitment to education is a testament to the sacrifices made by my family. As I progress in my academic endeavors, I am eager to not only fulfill my dream but also to inspire others in similar circumstances.

Cell phones in today’s society inspire me deeply, fueling a passion to contribute towards the creation of a more interconnected world. These pocket-sized devices seamlessly integrate into our lives—fitting into back pockets, purses, or backpacks. Their slender, compact structure allows me to carry a piece of home in my palm, connecting with loved ones and pets through calls and video chats. This technology serves as a powerful instrument of unity, fostering a profound sense of shared humanity. Beyond the convenience of communication, these pocket-sized marvels have evolved into catalysts for global connectivity and collaboration. Witnessing the potential of instant communication, information exchange, and social networking within the palm of one's hand inspires me to envision a world where borders are blurred, and distances lose their significance. I am motivated to be part of a future where these devices empower individuals to share ideas, mobilize for positive change, and collectively address global challenges. Despite criticisms about technology's impact on the newer generation, particularly from elders and parents, I recognize the nuanced nature of these devices. Unmonitored access, especially for children, can lead to destructive behavior. Yet, as I navigate the current world, particularly the ongoing crisis in Palestine, I am inspired by the positive impact of the internet, accessible through these devices. It serves as a powerful tool for activism, enabling individuals to contribute to meaningful causes through actions as simple as replying to a post or donating to GoFundMe campaigns. The internet emerges as a voice for the voiceless, offering a platform for those who have been silenced and need to be heard. In my pursuit of a career in the engineering workforce, I aspire to contribute to the development of new, better, faster, and more versatile cell phones. My goal is not only to enhance global communication but also to address concerns about the impact of technology on children. I envision creating technology that fosters safe and harmless expansion, providing a secure space for technological growth without compromising a child's development or well-being. This vision drives me to be a part of shaping a future where technology becomes a force for positive change and connection.

I am Jolette Espana, raised in Parlier, California. Parlier is a low-income rural town in Fresno county. I never truly realised just how disadvantaged my high school really was till I got to University. My high school had 6 AP classes in total, and zero IB classes. I never had a stable chemistry and biology teacher, and gang violence was so common that I can no longer comfortably wear red and blue colours. Despite growing up in a low income town, I was surrounded by my people and culture so I never felt alone. I am proud of where I am from, and my academic background might now be as strong as others who went to big high schools, but it is not stopping me from dreaming big. As of present day, I am a full time student at UC San Diego majoring in nano engineering. When I was a little girl I wanted to be the cool hacker you see in Tv shows or spy movies that could bypass anything and everything. The world of technology fascinates and excites me. With technology you can create endless amounts of content and software that can make the impossible possible at the tip of your finger, in the palm of your hand. Growing up with parents who didn’t get the chance to finish elementary school, it was hard to explain my dream and it was even harder to dream because no one I knew had done it. My family has gone through several financial struggles and disadvantages due to my father being deported. My mother worked tirelessly and rigorous hours in the fields of California and the heavy packing houses of the Central Valley. My parents came to the U.S. from Mexico at a very young age to raise their kids in hopes they could live out the so-called “American Dream” and give their children the privilege of free education. My mother never asked my siblings or me to join her in the fields or the packing houses to make more money, all she would ask of us was to get good grades, stay out of trouble, and get into college to obtain a good career. My mother has implemented good morals and mannerisms into my siblings and me, to be respectful, kind, and thoughtful to any and all, as well as proof that with hard work anything is possible. My mother is my motivator to do good in school. I relentlessly pursued excellence, I graduated top 10 of my class, excelled in athletics, and earned certification in web design from my local community college. I did everything I could to ensure my acceptance into a UC school. I’m happy to say that I was able to get into UC San Diego and will be attending this Fall quarter of 2023. I thank my mother every time because she is the reason I got in. She is the reason I am going, the reason I have set out to become an engineer. In conclusion, it is a true blessing I have gotten this far. I am determined to continue to surpass limitations created by nay-sayers. My academic and ethnic background have created my determination and my ability to adapt, being in a new environment that's on a different academic level can be scary but I will strive to thrive and succeed.

Single mothers in my opinion are the personification of extraordinary resilience and strength. Growing up with a single mother whose principles are hard work and devotion has shaped me into the person I have become and will continue to be, "It's the only way of life I've known. I was raised by a single mom."- Padma Lakshmi. Being raised by a single mom, I often forget I was supposed to have a father. My upbringing has instilled within me a profound appreciation for the sacrifices, tenacity, and integrity that single mothers embody every day. My mother's sacrifices have motivated and led me to pursue higher education and dedication to success by any means. Being raised by a single mother has taught me many valuable life skills, from cooking to self-study and household maintenance. These are skills I am going to be putting to use once I move from home to live on campus. Coming from a low-income household has also taught me the importance of budgeting and using hard-earned money for important things like food and hygienic items. It also taught me how to cope with being on my own, because my mother was constantly working I was constantly home alone. At times, it can be very lonely and overwhelming. I learned that it is okay to be alone and I also took the opportunity to discover new hobbies and interests. In conclusion, my mother is the most selfless and kind-hearted woman in my life. She is my role model, my muse, and my inspiration to take on every day to the best of my capabilities and to not think negatively about doing the dishes. I'm here regardless of the pain and obstacles my family and I have gone through, all of it was possible because of my mother's love for her babies. I’ll forever remember all I’ve learned from her. I have become more disciplined and dedicated to my education and will continue to strive for excellence, It is my goal to make her proud and make her sacrifices worth it.

As a child, I was constantly told about the importance of a college education. I naively assumed that everyone had a college degree, just like a family portrait on the wall. However, my perception of education took a dramatic turn when I asked my mother if she had a college degree. Her response shattered my illusion: "I didn't get past elementary school because my family couldn't afford it, so I never had the chance." This revelation ignited a burning desire within me – not only to pursue higher education for myself but also to fulfill a dream deferred in my family for generations. A high school diploma can open doors, but a bachelor's degree can open up a world of opportunities. My pursuit of higher education is driven by a dual purpose: to break the generational cycle of limited education and to alleviate the financial burdens my single mother has shouldered since my father's deportation to Mexico. I have had to witness her relentless commitment, waking up at 4 am six days a week to work in a grueling and heavy packing house for minimum wage. It breaks me to see her endure all this on her own, and I await the day when I can tell her she no longer has to work, and I will do the heavy lifting. Higher education is my path to a brighter future, where I can pursue a STEM degree, innovate, and provide my mother with the pride of saying her daughter attended a UC school and works for a tech giant like Microsoft or Apple. My journey at UC San Diego can not only fulfill my dream but also validate my mother's courageously dangerous journey from Mexico to the U.S. Being raised by a hard-working single mother has imparted valuable life skills, from cooking and self-study to laundry and household chores. These skills will serve me well in college, where I will once again navigate independence. They are assets I bring to my college experience, ensuring I am well-prepared for life away from home. I know it will be tough with new profound independence and coming from low-income status will be even tougher. During my high school years, I relentlessly pursued excellence. I graduated in the top 10 of my class, excelled in athletics, and earned a business certification from my local community college. These experiences provided a glimpse into college life, offering valuable lessons in punctuality, preparedness, and focus. Participation in extracurricular activities, particularly sports, strengthened my communication skills and boosted my confidence, emphasizing the importance of asking questions when uncertain and there is no shame in doing so. In conclusion, my journey toward higher education as a first-generation student has been defined by resilience, determination, and an unwavering commitment to breaking barriers. I have chosen this path not only to honor my mother's sacrifices but also to seize the opportunities she never had. As I embark on my transformative journey at UC San Diego, I carry with me the dreams of my family and the aspiration to prove that success knows no boundaries. My pursuit of higher education is a testament to the boundless potential within all first-generation students. I am determined to thrive, leaving an indelible mark on the world as a symbol of the power of dreams and the value of education. My journey has just begun, and I am confident in my pursuit of knowledge, opportunity, and a brighter future
