Dr. C.L. Gupta Young Scholars Award
Growing up in a single-parent household, my life was shaped by both love and struggle. My mom, a high school biology teacher by day and a Walmart employee by night, worked tirelessly to provide for me and my siblings. Yet, no matter how much she worked, there were times when bills piled up and we went without. It wasn’t easy, but these challenges taught me early on the value of hard work, resilience, and the importance of perseverance. I learned quickly that if you want something—if you want to change your circumstances—you have to fight for it.
I wasn’t handed opportunities, but I’ve always sought them out. I spent my high school years juggling multiple jobs to help support my family—coaching gymnastics, refereeing soccer games, and working at a local diner. At the same time, I pushed myself academically, maintaining a 3.94 GPA despite the constant juggle between work and school. It wasn’t always easy. There were days I felt like I was drowning in stress, trying to balance a demanding schedule while staying on top of my coursework. But the drive to create a better life for myself kept me going, and every challenge only strengthened my resolve.
This journey of balancing work and school was more than just about surviving—it became about thriving in the face of adversity. My ACT's were average; despite having average test scores, I led my team to multiple state championships and placed nationally, showcasing my leadership and problem-solving abilities. These accomplishments weren’t just about grades—they represented my ability to push through hardship and excel despite the odds. Every late night spent studying or working was a step closer to my goal: a degree that would empower me to shape the future.
Now, I’m at Oklahoma State University, pursuing a degree in Mechatronics and Robotics. I’m passionate about how robotics can change lives—especially for underserved communities like the one I grew up in. I want to create solutions that make healthcare more accessible, streamline education, and help close the gap for people who don’t have the same opportunities I’ve fought for. But even with my determination and passion, I’m faced with a daunting challenge: the financial burden of attending college.
While I’ve been fortunate enough to receive some scholarships, they still leave me with a mountain of debt. I find myself working long hours just to make ends meet, and though I’ve learned how to juggle multiple jobs, it takes away from the time I need to focus on my studies and innovate in my field. This scholarship would provide the relief I desperately need. It would allow me to dedicate myself fully to my education without the constant worry of how I’m going to pay for it.
Receiving this scholarship would be more than just financial relief—it would give me the freedom to dive deeper into my studies, participate in more research opportunities. It would provide me with the space to grow both academically and personally, allowing me to continue pushing toward my goal of becoming a leader in my field.
Ultimately, this scholarship isn’t just about helping me pay for school; it’s about investing in a future where I can give back. The skills I gain at Oklahoma State University will enable me to create innovative solutions that will impact industries and communities around the world. I am determined to use my education to improve the lives of others, and with your support, I will have the chance to make that dream a reality.
Achieve Potential Scholarship
Attending college has always been a dream of mine, but that dream has never felt more distant than it does now. It's not just about the late nights of studying or the challenges of keeping up with coursework—that's part of the journey. What weighs me down is the constant financial burden that threatens to block the very path I’ve worked so hard to build.
As I continue my studies at Oklahoma State University, I’m already facing a mountain of debt, with no clear way to overcome it. I’ve fought tooth and nail to get this far, but no matter how much I hustle, I’m still staring at an overwhelming financial barrier. This is the reality for so many students like me—those who come from low-income backgrounds, have given it their all, and yet still find themselves struggling to pay for the education that could transform their lives.
Growing up in a single-parent household, I saw firsthand the sacrifices my mom made. She juggled a full-time teaching job and a part-time position at Walmart to ensure my siblings and I had what we needed. Despite her tireless work ethic, there were always moments when it felt like we were on the edge of financial disaster. I had to step up early, working multiple jobs—refereeing soccer games, coaching gymnastics, and now working at a local diner—just to help make ends meet. These experiences taught me resilience, but they also exposed a hard truth: no matter how many hours I put in, sometimes it’s just not enough.
That's why college is so vital to me. I’m not asking for a handout; I’m asking for a chance. A college degree is more than a ticket to a career for me—it’s the key to creating real change in the world. My passion for mechatronics and robotics fuels my desire to develop technologies that can transform healthcare and education, especially for underserved communities like mine. I want to build solutions that bridge the gap for people who need it most, and college is where I’ll gain the tools to make that happen.
The scholarships I’ve received so far have been a lifeline, but they only cover part of the expenses. Even as I work hard to balance school, work, and extracurriculars, I’m facing the prospect of taking on more debt than I can reasonably manage. A future weighed down by student loans would add a burden I already feel from the financial challenges I’ve faced growing up.
But with this scholarship, I could focus on what matters most—my education. I could dive deeper into my studies and continue my leadership efforts in STEM, like mentoring younger students in robotics and pushing for more diversity in tech. I’ve already led my robotics team to state championships and taken on leadership roles in organizations that align with my goals, like TSA and NTHS. This scholarship would give me the breathing room to build on that momentum, to prove that someone from my background can succeed, despite the odds.
Receiving this scholarship isn’t just about making school more affordable—it’s about making my dreams achievable. It’s about removing the financial chains that hold me back from fully committing to my future..
In short, this scholarship isn’t just an investment in me—it’s an investment in the impact I can make, the changes I can drive, and the hope I can offer to others who are facing the same struggles. With your help, I’ll be able to take my education and future to the next level, proving that hard work, dedication, and perseverance can lead to success, no matter where you start.
Sean Carroll's Mindscape Big Picture Scholarship
From a young age, I’ve always been fascinated by how things work. Whether it’s the way machines come together to perform a specific function or the grand mysteries of the universe, I’ve found myself asking big questions and seeking out answers. This curiosity led me to pursue a major in mechatronics and robotics, a field that combines mechanical engineering, electronics, and computer science to develop solutions that make a real impact. But the more I dive into my studies, the more I realize that the quest for understanding is not just about technology—it’s about connecting ideas across different fields and exploring how they work together to solve complex problems.
Growing up in a rural town with fewer than 60 students in my graduating class, I’ve always been used to small spaces, limited resources, and making the most of what I had. I worked a variety of small jobs to help support my family—whether it was refereeing soccer games or working at a local diner. Moving from a town of just 3,000 people to a state university with more than 170,000 students was a huge transition. The shift from a tight-knit community where everyone knows each other to a massive campus full of strangers was daunting. But it also ignited a sense of ambition and purpose in me. I’ve always had big dreams and the determination to chase them, no matter the challenges I faced. The contrast between my small town and the opportunities at a large state school has only reinforced my commitment to learning, growing, and giving back to my community. This scholarship would help me bridge that gap, allowing me to continue my education without the constant pressure of financial struggles, so I can focus on making those big dreams a reality.
I believe it’s important to better understand the nature of our universe because the more we know, the more we can improve our lives and solve real-world problems. One episode of Mindscape that really inspired me was Sean Carroll’s conversation with theoretical physicist Sabine Hossenfelder about the search for a theory of everything. In the episode, they discuss how the universe’s fundamental laws might eventually be uncovered, and how understanding these laws could lead to breakthroughs not just in physics, but in areas like energy, medicine, and technology. This conversation helped me see that the pursuit of knowledge in any field—whether it’s physics, robotics, or neuroscience—ultimately aims to make the world a better place. By understanding the universe’s basic principles, we can innovate in ways that have a real, lasting impact. As someone studying mechatronics, I want to use these kinds of insights to develop technologies that address big challenges, like sustainability and healthcare, and to help create solutions that make a difference in people’s lives.
One episode of Mindscape that really inspired me was Sean Carroll’s conversation with physicist Kip Thorne about time and black holes. Listening to Thorne describe how gravity can warp the fabric of space and time challenged my thinking and deepened my understanding of how the universe works on a fundamental level. It reminded me that everything in our universe is interconnected—from the smallest particle to the largest cosmic structures—and that our job as humans is to keep exploring, keep questioning, and keep learning. That episode solidified my belief that a deep understanding of the world requires more than just technical knowledge—it requires creativity, curiosity, and a willingness to challenge what we think we know.
Another episode that left a lasting impression was Sean’s conversation with neuroscientist David Eagleman on how the brain shapes our perception of reality. As someone who is passionate about technology and robotics, I found the discussion fascinating because it made me think about the human side of innovation. Technology isn’t just about building machines—it’s about understanding how those machines can be used to improve lives. Whether it’s in healthcare, education, or sustainability, technology should be used to create solutions that truly help people. Eagleman’s insights pushed me to think beyond the mechanical and computational aspects of my work and consider how technology can better connect us to the world around us.
Growing up in a small town, I didn’t always have access to cutting-edge technology or the opportunities that students in larger cities might have. But that didn’t stop me. I joined robotics clubs, competed in state and national competitions, and worked tirelessly to teach myself the skills I would need to pursue a career in mechatronics. As a member of the Choctaw Nation, I’ve always been aware of the challenges that come with being part of an underrepresented community in STEM. But those challenges have only fueled my desire to succeed and help others like me break into these fields. I want to be a role model for young people who may not see themselves in engineering or technology careers and show them that they, too, can make a difference in the world.
Listening to the Mindscape podcast has reinforced my belief that the pursuit of knowledge is a lifelong journey that requires a willingness to approach problems from multiple perspectives. It has reminded me that science, technology, and philosophy are all interconnected, and that the most profound solutions often come from blending insights from diverse disciplines. This is the approach I want to bring to my career in robotics—creating solutions that combine engineering, technology, and human understanding to address the pressing issues facing underserved communities.
The Mindscape Big Picture Scholarship would provide invaluable support in helping me achieve this vision. It would allow me to continue my education without the constant stress of financial burdens, enabling me to focus on my studies and explore these big ideas. I’m excited about the potential to contribute to a future where we can use technology to solve real-world problems, improve quality of life, and give back to communities that need it most. This scholarship would not only help me pursue my academic and career goals, but also allow me to take that knowledge and give back—just as others have given to me along the way.

My vision is to establish programs that introduce underprivileged youth to STEM, offering mentorship, hands-on experiences, and encouragement. I want them to know that they can overcome barriers, just as I have strived to do.
Financial challenges have been a constant in my life. I’ve worked various jobs since I was 11—refereeing soccer games, coaching gymnastics, and recently, working at a local diner. Each job taught me the value of hard work, but they also highlighted the difficulty of balancing employment with education. Despite my efforts, it often felt like I was living paycheck to paycheck. Each time I managed to save a little, my family’s needs would come first. This experience has fueled my desire to ensure that no student has to choose between pursuing their education and meeting financial obligations.
Receiving this scholarship would significantly alleviate my financial burdens, allowing me to focus more on my studies and less on juggling multiple jobs. It would enable me to immerse myself fully in my education, developing the skills I need to achieve my dreams while continuing to support my family as best as I can.
All in all, my career aspirations in mechatronics and robotics are driven by a desire to create technology that uplifts everyone, especially those who face challenges similar to mine. Derk Golden Memorial Scholarship
My name is John Williams, and I live in Atoka, Oklahoma. A soccer moment that remains etched in my memory occurred during my first year in High School. I intercepted a pass near the midline intended for my left-wing teammate, yet the wind decided otherwise. The goalkeeper advanced out of the net to engage the ball. The wind altered the trajectory of the ball, causing it to bounce five yards in front of him and soar twelve yards high. With bated breath, I watched as the ball grazed the back of the net, marking a moment of immense pride; my teammates rushed towards me, celebrating our goal. Keep in mind I’m a defensive player. The adrenaline from that goal surged through me, fueling my performance throughout the rest of the game; and every time I tell the story. The match concluded with a score of 1-0 in our favor, and my teammates rushed towards me, celebrating our victory.
My relocation from the heart of Texas to Southern Oklahoma happened when I was seven years old. I was enrolled in soccer soon after, marking the first of my friends in my new surroundings. My aspiration for the sport flourished, as I actively participated in every available season. Little did I know, my Grandpa, whom I referred to as Wizard, played a pivotal role in introducing soccer to Atoka—I found out only after his passing. Throughout my middle school journey, I remained committed to soccer, standing as the only applicant for the sport in my area. Financial constraints kept my participation in club teams or other leagues due to the registration fees and transportation expenses.
My professional journey started at the age of 11 when I took a role as a soccer referee. In those days, individuals above the age of 11 were eligible to officiate soccer matches, and after successfully passing the test, I took to the field as a referee at my local soccer grounds. Reasons To Be - In Memory of Jimmy Watts
My volunteer experience has played a significant role in shaping my core values and influencing the direction of my career and life goals. Growing up in Atoka, Oklahoma, I embarked on my journey as a leader at the age of 11, stepping onto the soccer field as a referee. Successfully passing the referee test, I proudly assumed my position on the local soccer grounds, donning the official uniform and blowing the whistle with confidence. Concurrently, at 14, I expanded my impact by becoming a coach at a local gymnastics gym. Balancing both roles, I ingrained myself in the community and positively influenced the aspiring youth who looked up to me.
However, the gym's unfortunate closure in August 2023 due to a lack of volunteers didn't deter my determination. I transitioned to a new arena, focusing on my job that I had acquired in the beginning of the year at a downtown diner where I had been employed for a while. In this tight-knit environment, where everyone knows each other, I continued to demonstrate and refine my leadership skills.
My volunteer experiences have instilled in me core values that now drive my future aspirations. I am determined to surpass the achievements of my peers and cultivate unwavering mental resilience. During the summer before my Senior year, I immersed myself in various educational camps, earning six college credits. I seized every opportunity for employment, showcasing my proactive approach to life. Additionally, I dedicated time to the "Summer Pride" program, enhancing my physical fitness alongside my schoolmates, and even competed at TSA Nationals in Louisville, Kentucky.

WinnerMy name is John Williams, and I live in Atoka, Oklahoma. Keep in mind I'm a defensive player. The adrenaline from that goal surged through me, fueling my performance throughout the rest of the game; and every time the story is told.
