My name is Jodiefoss - most people call me Jodie. I am an incoming freshman at Rutgers University majoring in nursing.
Despite my financial disadvantages, I have successfully taken 13 AP courses in high school and graduated 6th in my class while involving myself in several extracurriculars. In high school, I spent most of my time volunteering in the Children's Choir and Youth Group at my local church. However, I am most proud to have been the saxophone section leader of my High School's Marching Band.
Currently, I am involved in the Air Force ROTC Program at Rutgers University as an AS200 cadet. I am also working as a Social Media Assistant for Rutgers University.
FUN FACT: I enjoy skateboarding, water-rafting, learning new languages (currently, I'm trying to learn Spanish), cooking foods from cultures other than my own, and dabbling in film and photography in my free time.
I appreciate you taking the time to view my scholarship profile!

Community Health Ambassador Scholarship for Nursing Students
When I was younger, my mother would tell me about her dreams of pursuing her dream career - nursing. However, she never held the opportunity of pursuing an education beyond high school due to their family's financial situation back in the Philippines. My mother worked her way to America, a better place; however, she was stuck - cleaning and toiling away at a wealthy person's home while providing for her three daughters alone.
Watching my mother come home from work consistently in the same state - exhausted - was difficult for me. So, while my mother was working, I tried my best to help around the house as much as possible. I was responsible for caring for my two younger siblings: cooking meals, cleaning the house, helping with homework, and providing emotional support. Being an imaginative little girl, I pretended I was a nurse, and my siblings were my patients every day. I loved it. Observing my sisters' growth over the years makes it all worthwhile. It's somewhat fulfilling to know that I played a factor in their development, shaping them into brilliant, compassionate girls today.
For that reason, my dream is to become a nurse, possessing the opportunity to touch or change a life daily. I strive to be the light in a person's darkness. By caring for others during their complicated period of illness, I will experience a heartwarming and fulfilling feeling because I am helping humanity while developing myself into a better person. Service to humanity is a service to God. Becoming a nurse grants me endless opportunities to serve humanity, serve God, and continue in my mother's footsteps by completing career milestones she dreamed of achieving, allowing me to live my most desired life.
In addition, I aim to "provide care in the air" as a flight nurse in the Air Force. One of my life aspirations is to assist people globally and contribute to underprivileged communities in the future. To support this dream, I am an AS200 Cadet in the Air Force ROTC program at Rutgers University and will undergo training this summer.
In my nursing career, I aspire to be the person others seek for assistance or if they feel hesitant about going to the hospital. By becoming a mentor within my community, I can address a prevalent issue in Asian households where there is a reluctance to seek medical help. This reluctance may stem from embarrassment, difficulty in understanding diagnoses, or financial reasons. My goal is to be a trusted healthcare professional within my community, capable of dispelling stereotypes and encouraging others to seek medical attention. Even though I am not a nurse yet, I consistently embody the qualities of an ideal nurse, including showing empathy, compassion, professionalism, and approachability through all aspects of my life. I do this so that when I become a nurse, I can help others effectively because to me, nursing is not just a profession; it is a way of life.

In addition, I aim to "provide care in the air" as a flight nurse in the Air Force. Because of my financial status, I have not experienced much traveling, but I will inherit the benefit of traveling globally as a flight nurse. This profession will offer endless opportunities to help people from Australia to Italy to Alaska! To support this dream, I am an AS200 Cadet in the Air Force ROTC program at Rutgers University and will undergo training this summer.
Not only does becoming a nurse allow me to serve humanity, but I will be able to carry on the values and traits exemplified by Pangeta McGrowther Ferguson and Ivory Riley. I'll demonstrate empathy through listening to patients' needs and showing curiosity and interest in their lives. I'll reveal my compassion by taking the time to understand what my patient has experienced. To provide a high degree of professionalism, I will act in the best interest of my patients and take responsibility for all my actions. I’ll take on mentorship and try to become a mentor to many - both new nurses and patients - as Pangeta and Ivory were mentors to others. I'll exhibit these characteristics exemplified by these two incredible women inside and outside my workspace because nursing is not merely a career but a lifestyle.

Flight nursing additionally provides an environment characterized by constant motion and rapid decision-making, like the ICU. The dynamic qualities of aeromedical transport fuel my desire to be part of a profession that demands adaptability and quick responses. Since I thrive in high-stress situations, the fast-paced environment of flight nursing intrigues me and challenges me to continuously learn, grow, and refine my skills, fostering personal and professional development.
To prepare myself for this step into this nursing journey summer experience, I accepted a unit clerk and hospitality aid position in a nursing home near my hometown. As a. unit clerk, I've gained the indispensable opportunity to observe interactions between healthcare providers, patients, and families. I've actively monitored insights into the nursing practice and clinical making decisions. Most importantly, I've witnessed how to interact with residents and their families. One must demonstrate compassion and empathy, which Kelly O. exemplified during her impactful career. I'll present these traits by showing patients, putting myself into the resident's shoes, and respecting personal boundaries. One of the top priorities of any nurse is to make sure the resident and their family members are comfortable since it is crucial for trust and a patient's emotional well-being. I will continue to embrace my role as a unit clerk as a launchpad propelling e to become a compassionate and skilled flight nurse, where I will soar amidst the clouds to save lives and create a difference in the healthcare industry.

Single Mother's Education Scholarship
When I was younger, my mother would tell me about her dreams of pursuing her dream career - nursing. However, she never held the opportunity of pursuing an education beyond high school due to their family's financial situation back in the Philippines. My mother worked her way to America, a better place; however, she was stuck - cleaning and toiling away at a wealthy person's home while providing for her three daughters alone.
Watching my mother come home from work consistently in the same state - exhausted - was difficult for me. Since my mother was constantly slaving away at work and my father neglected his responsibilities as a parent, I had to take it upon myself to become the ideal daughter. I was responsible for caring for my two younger siblings: cooking meals, cleaning the house, helping with homework, and providing emotional support. Being an imaginative little girl, I pretended I was a nurse and my siblings were my daily patients. Although sometimes tiring, I knew I needed to do this for my mother - for all the sacrifices she made. This was the least I could do. However, I started to enjoy raising my sisters over time because observing their growth over the years made it all worthwhile. It's somewhat fulfilling to know that I played a factor in their development, shaping them into brilliant, compassionate girls today.
For that reason, my dream is to become a nurse, possessing the opportunity to touch or change a life daily. I strive to be the light in a person's darkness. Since my mother must provide for my two younger sisters, she does not have money to contribute towards my college expenses. During high school, I worked diligently at my part time job at Chick-fil-A, to save up for college; however, a large portion of my paychecks were allocated towards helping my mother cover expenses including rent and phone bills. I will be working on campus next semester to help with paying for my tuition; however, the Single Mother's Education Scholarship will aid in lessening my stress. I will not be as pressured about student loans, allowing me to focus more on the class material rather than worrying about paying for the class. This scholarship will help me accomplish my longtime goals of completing a bachelor's degree in Nursing and become the first Flight Nurse in my family.
