I feel like there are many reasons why I should be chosen for this scholarship, I know how to persevere through obstacles and work hard when it is needed. There was one person who has done that in my life that I feel meant the most to me, but he passed away when I was in 6th grade. He meant so much to me when I was young because he was always there for me when it came to sports. Looking back at it, I realize how much of a mentor and inspiration he was to me instead of just being a grandfather. He always pushed me to become better at sports mostly basketball, because he was a high school varsity head coach in Virginia. He would try to make it to all the games that he could so he could watch me play, and after all my games, he would tell me what I could have done to avoid some of my mistakes or what I could do to create more opportunities for myself. So this obstacle showed me how to overcome things and persevere through them. Also when I was younger in my elementary and middle school days I would struggle with my grades because I was a very lazy person at the time and didn't like to do homework or pay attention in class. But once I got older I realized how important my grades are and how they will help me out in the future so I decided to start working hard on my school work. Ever since I started working hard I have been getting honor rolls 90% of the time. The scholarship money that I would receive wouldn't just help me, it would also help my family because they are the ones who are paying for college and that scholarship money will help them in a way where they won't have to spend as much money. Especially if I decide to go to a college that is located out of state because they would have to pay for out-of-state tuition which costs way more than in-state tuition. I want my parents to be able not to have to worry so much about spending most of their money on college and have them feel like my going to college is taking away all their money. Especially because my mom is having some financial issues right now and winning this scholarship would be a big help. But after I graduate it will be all worth it because they won't have to spend money on me anymore as much as they will when I get to college. After all, I will be using my major to find a good-paying job that is still something I want to do. Going to college can be very expensive and it's not just going to the college by itself, it's paying for the dorms, groceries, books, classes, and other things that I will need for when I go to college. So with all those things my parents will have to pay for, this scholarship money will help pay for a lot of those things depending on how much money I will receive from scholarships.

While we were home, we would watch videos on his favorite basketball player Kobe Bryant or my favorite player at the time Stephen Curry. He was such a big Kobe fan; he always talked to me about Kobe's work ethic and always wanted me to have a mindset like his if I had dreams of playing professional basketball. But ever since his passing, I feel like my motivation just went down because there was nobody to push me anymore as he did. My mom did not care for sports, and my dad wanted me to be good at what I do but did not do an excellent job by putting me in a good position, like getting me a trainer or getting me to a place where I could be better, so I just thought he never really pushed me as much my grandfather did. But how I overcame his death and dealt with it was that I just looked up to other people that I wanted to be like or a person I could consider my mentor. Now I watch videos of one of my favorite players and try to study them so that I can try to pick up some of their skills to become a better basketball player. I learned how to study that person from my grandfather. But as of today, I figured out a way to overcome the obstacle of his passing and find a way to motivate myself to be the best I can be in the classroom, in sports, or in anything I want to be in life. Normandie’s HBCU Empower Scholar Grant
An HBCU stands for a historically black college or university for African Americans, and ever since I heard of HBCUs, I have wanted to attend one. Attending an HBCU means I will be around many people who look like me and feel I will always fit in. I was never the type of person to like being around a lot of people that I don't know, so I don't like being around big groups a lot of times, and that's what I like about HBCUs becasue they don't have as many students as PWI's (predominately white institution). PWI classrooms can come up to around 200 students in one classroom, which is not something I would prefer becasue I feel like it would be hard to build a relationship with your teacher and ask the questions you need to know becasue they are so many students. But with HBCUs, there aren't many students, so the classrooms are smaller, and you can have more one on one time with your teacher if you ever need help. Tuition is also a part of one of the reasons I want to attend an HBCU; tuition tends to be cheaper than PWIs, which would be more affordable for my family and me.

The goals I have for myself are to graduate from college with a bachelor's degree in business to get myself a job that I enjoy that is also good paying and not fail any classes. The reason I have these goals for myself is that I always felt like college was hard even though I haven't even taken one college class and I want to be prepared for college and to never give up no matter how hard it may get. The reason why I am so passionate about basketball is because of my grandfather. Before his passing, he had such a big impact on me and he was always there for me when it came to basketball. He meant so much to me when I was young. He was always there for me when it came to basketball even the other sports like football and baseball because he played all of those sports when he was younger. Looking back at it, I realized how much of a mentor and inspiration he was to me instead of just being a grandfather. He always pushed me to become better at sports and mostly basketball because he was a high school girls' varsity head coach in Virginia. He would try to make it to all the games that he could so he could watch me play and after all my games he would tell me what I could have done to avoid some of my mistakes or what I could do to create more opportunities for myself. So this obstacle showed me how to overcome things and persevere through them. These activities may benefit the community in many different ways. But more specifically playing basketball can have a positive impact on a community in many ways. The first way is that it can promote fitness and health which can reduce the risk of chronic diseases. Additionally, basketball is a sport that can bring people together just like football and baseball because they are team sports that require the players to work together. Encouraging teamwork and cooperation can help the community steer away from violence and more so to being together and getting along with one another. Not only does it encourage teamwork, but students who attend games can be encouraged by watching people play the sport to participate in extracurricular activities instead of participating in activities that may demoralize them such as smoking, violence, and other drugs. Even for sports that do not have teammates and is a solo sport, it can still help the community. For example, ping pong is a solo sport and even though it does not require teamwork or getting along with someone, the players are still having fun while competing against other people in the community and being away from the drugs and violence that they might see from other people around them and it is possible that joining the extracurricular activity may keep those people that are already involved in the violence, it might encourage them to stop.

But once I got older I realized how important my grades are and how they will help me out in the future so decided to start working hard on my school work ever since I started working hard I have been getting honor roll 90% of the time. The scholarship money that I would receive wouldn't just help me it would also help my family because they are the ones who are paying for college and that scholarship money will help them in a way where they won't have to spend as much money.  Especially if I decide to go to a college that is located out of state because they would have to pay for out-of-state tuition which cost way more than in-state tuition. I want my parents to be able to not have to worry so much about spending most of their money on college and have them feel like me going to college is taking away all their money. Especially because my mom is having some financial issues right now and winning this scholarship would be big help. But after I graduate it will be all worth it because they won't have to spend money on me anymore as much as they will when I got to college because I will be using my major to find a good paying job that is still something I want to do. Going to college can be very expensive and it's not just going to the college by itself it's paying for the dorms, groceries, books, classes, and other things that I will need for when I go to college. So with all those things, my parents will have to pay for, this scholarship money will help pay for a lot of those things depending on how much money I will receive from scholarships.
