To be frank, ever since I was a young child, I have always been intrigued by the idea of being 'Dr. Lewis'. A simple third grade career research project initially lit this flame within me, and the flame was kindled by my older brother. I was always filled with excitement when he would show up with a stethoscope and listen to my little heart. I felt being the cure for others was my calling, but attending college was an abstract concept after my brother left the picture. I had a goal in mind, but there was no clear plan to achieve it. As a little boy growing up in a home where abuse and starvation were normal, school was not my priority. In fact, my parents would constantly remind me that I was too stupid to be a doctor, and the dream began to fade as I internalized the comments. Before reaching highschool I knew this career was not at all possible for someone like me; a person with no support and little ambition. I was changing homes and schools frequently due to poverty, and my grades dwindled further. It was not until my last two years of highschool that I began to focus on my future, because a teacher graciously accepted me into her health class. She told me I could be anything I wanted as long as I could stay focused. With my dream restored, I became a member of HOSA (Health Occupations Students of America), earned a PCT (Patient Care Tech) certification, and even improved immensely in my studies. After a career research project in her class, for the first time in a long while, I saw the outline for success. With no parental support, I entered college confused and alone, which made navigating nearly impossible. However, with ambition and dedication, I was able to find my way. Currently I attend the University of Alabama at Birmingham as a pre-health biology major. Upon completion of my doctorate, I plan to work until raising enough capital to start my own biotech company with a focus on prosthetics. I would like to give opportunity, encouragement, and a scope to success to underprivileged communities. I will implement internships and camps that will focus on training and funding poor and minority communities for college. I will see that each child is given just as many advantages as their more fortunate peers.
