In 2009, I graduated from Hofstra University with a 2.57 GPA, making me the first member of my family to earn an undergraduate degree. As an African-American male growing up in a middle-class background, obtaining a higher level of education was a milestone for me and a triumph for my entire family. As a young student, I always obtained high marks in classwork and took pride in producing quality work. However, during my entire undergraduate enrollment, I suffered from significant chronic health issues. Moreover, the side effects of my treatment plan further caused complications that impeded my ability to concentrate and perform to the best of my abilities, while I worked full-time to finance my education.
Throughout the course of my illness, I did not tell anyone. I did not want to disappoint my loved ones. I internalized the experience and, as a result, became severely depressed. Both, the physical and mental anguish, subsequently affected my undergraduate academic performance. However, through this hardship, I continued to persevere and completed my Bachelor’s degree.
Since then, my drive and work experiences are testaments to overcoming those obstacles. I have learned the importance of asking for help, and realized I have an entire network of family, friends, and mentors. As a result, I regained my academic confidence and continued my education by pursuing a Master’s in the Studies of Law at Fordham University School of Law and graduating with a 3.54 GPA.
With a renewed focus, I am looking forward to the future while earning an MBA from NYU Stern Business school.
