Moving halfway across the world at the age of 13 was one of the hardest things I’ve had to endure in my eighteen years. Leaving my dad and my sister behind in Australia was even harder. New school. New home. New culture. New life. My life was flipped upside down when we moved, and it would never be the same.
My life reminded me of the new movie at the time called Inside Out. In the film, a young girl's whole world was turned upside down when she moved. Her emotions tell the story and guide her through this life-changing journey. Although my emotions did help me through this life-changing experience, my inner strength was the characteristic that I valued the most during that time in my life. My inner strength made me feel as though I wasn’t alone and that everything would be okay in the end even though my emotions didn’t agree.
My inner strength was an important part of the life-changing move I experienced as well as in my everyday life. I deal with a lot of self-confidence issues as well as severe social anxiety in my day-to-day life. I think having this inner strength has helped with my self-confidence issues as well as my anxiety issues. My inner strength has given me more confidence which has also played a major role in helping me deal with my severe anxiety.
In the future, this internal strength will help me get through other struggles I may be faced with. Whether these struggles are mental health issues, education issues, career issues, and even struggles that affect my soccer career. Having this inner strength it makes me feel like I can just drive over any road bumps that are put in my path. I can be sure that no matter what I will be faced with I know I have the strength to get through it.
It's been about five years since we moved. I have a solid group of friends now and don’t stick out like a thumbtack, although I do still get comments from strangers about my accent very often. Oftentimes, I find myself thinking about whether moving was for the best, but I still can't decide on an answer. All I know is that the move changed my life forever. I wouldn’t be the person I am today without experiencing the move and this crazy rollercoaster of a journey that still hasn’t stopped.
