Hey there, I'm Jessica Williams, and my current adventure involves diving into the worlds of Applied Food Science and Technology and Personal Care Science in pursuit of a Master's of Business and Science at Rutgers University. My journey is filled with resilience, joy, gratitude, and a unique co-generational story.
Beyond the classroom, I've taken on some pretty cool roles, including being a Student Ambassador, a Brain Bowl Team Member, and serving as the President of Phi Theta Kappa. Juggling these responsibilities while also being a caretaker for my brother has been a whirlwind, but it's all part of the vibrant peaks and valleys that make up my life.
Here's the twist: I didn't follow the traditional educational route. I proudly pursued my education after obtaining a GED, a decision fueled by my commitment to caregiving during my primary and secondary education years. Bringing my brother to college with me at times became a unique chapter in my story, adding layers of determination, heart, and pure grit to my academic journey.
But that's not all—I dream BIG, beyond the Milky Way BIG. As an aspiring entrepreneur, my goal is to create an inclusive, inviting, and growth-centered environment for individuals with disabilities to not only work but flourish. Let's break barriers, embrace joy, and build a world where everyone has the opportunity to thrive. Join me on this exciting ride as I combine my studies, caregiving role, leadership positions, and dreams of entrepreneurship to craft a future filled with inclusivity, success, and endless possibilities!

As a small child asking how to spell a word, I would receive an answer, but it didn’t include letters; it was directions guiding my path in life. My mother’s response was consistent: “Go sound it out, look it up, and learn what it means,” directing me to a dictionary or encyclopedia. At the time, I perceived my mother as harsh, yet little did I know she was preparing me to learn, adapt, and grow for life, transcending the challenges and limitations I believed were present within me. This has become a strength of mine – to be a seeker of solutions with patience and perseverance. All of this credit goes to my mother, who became a parent just four days after turning seventeen and provided for my brother with ASD and me.
Coming from a single-parent background and a low-income household, I learned that challenges are inevitable but temporary. My mother supported us on minimum-wage jobs and student loans until she achieved her own educational goals. At times, electricity shutoff notices greeted me after school, leading me to complete as much homework as possible during daylight before candlelight and well-placed flashlights. When my mother returned from her work-study position, she would apologize (sometimes tearfully), explain our circumstances and goals, and join me in doing homework. This showed me that though circumstances might not be ideal, our actions can help us accomplish tasks, and we can achieve and aspire in the darkness of our lives.
During my junior year of my undergraduate degree in microbiology, I exited a life-threatening and financially abusive relationship, resulting in a diagnosis of PTSD and bankruptcy. This experience heightened my gratitude for life and consciousness of my resilience and grit. Drawing from my mother’s example as a single parent, I continued moving forward in the face of adversity with good intentions and purpose.
Love, compassion, and empathy can be the positive byproducts of being raised by a single parent and overcoming obstacles. I have been a co-caretaker for my brother my entire life, assisting him with life skills and work preparation. However, after leaving a special culinary program for adults with disabilities, he encountered difficulties in work environments. Seeing employment from his perspective, our lotus seed has begun to germinate from the mud of our experiences. My plan to impact my community was created. Partnered with my brother, I aim to start a sensory-friendly food manufacturing facility that includes life skills classes and collaborates with local non-profit organizations for family and friends outings. Given my brother’s culinary experience and my background in restaurants, food quality assurance, and my current pursuit of a master’s degree in global food technology and innovation, we aim to create a space where experiences can culminate, and a better quality of life and achievement can be fostered for others. In establishing this sensory-friendly food manufacturing facility, my goal is to create an environment where individuals, like my brother, can learn, adapt, and persevere with the same independence and confidence that my mother instilled in me, ensuring a brighter future for our community.
