The urgent cry of “code blue” and the amplified sound of rapid footsteps in the hallway caused me to become overwhelmed with fear. As I turned the corner, I was in disbelief to discover my patient’s lifeless body stretched across the floor. Despite my shock, I felt the weight of responsibility as the last person to see the patient alive. Moments later I remained in disbelief as I performed postmortem care for the first time and transported the body to the morgue. Tears flowed uncontrollably as I recounted the sequence of events to my teacher. Three weeks later, at my high school graduation, my teacher awarded me my nurse aide pin and shared, “If I had to choose a student strong enough to handle that situation it would be you.” For the next five years, I continued working in direct patient care possessing the same compassion, strength, and resilience while unveiling my unwavering desire to study public health through the lens of the law.
My teacher's words resonated with me during the COVID-19 pandemic when I worked as a clinical technician at a hospital. The health policy controversies during the pandemic, such as privacy concerns associated with contact tracing, treatment protocols, and vaccine and mask mandates, sparked my interest in the intersection between health and law. Specifically, I became invested in the efforts being put forth by the Trump Administration to repeal the Affordable Care Act (ACA). I learned the repeal of the ACA would result in millions of Americans being left uninsured contributing to the widening of health disparities among vulnerable populations and minoritized communities. Subsequently, while working at a free clinic for medically underserved families, I interacted with the individuals who would be affected by the repeal of the ACA by limiting their access to healthcare. These systematic changes motivated me to pursue a master’s in public health (MPH) to expand my knowledge of health policy from a public health perspective.
Reflecting on these experiences, I became invested in advocacy and achieving health equity through the law sector. The conscious decision to pursue law was driven by the repercussions of policy changes widening the healthcare gap and contributing to the increase of health disparities. The combination of health and law has been continuously manifested as I worked within medically underserved communities, furthered my education by pursuing an MPH, and now interning with a public health attorney to decriminalize sex work and advocate for the rights and safety of sex workers. The opportunity to obtain my Juris Doctorate would provide me with the quintessential opportunity to engage in transformative healthcare initiatives. It would also enable me to advocate for the rights and interests of individuals who benefit from such initiatives.
The compassion, strength, and resilience I demonstrated during the “code blue” incident have remained consistent themes throughout my academic and professional career and set the tone for my commitment to public health through legal avenues. My journey from direct patient care to pursuing an MPH and now collaborating on transformative public health law initiatives showcases my perpetual dedication. The conjunction of compassion, fortitude, and advocacy positions makes me an exceptional Juris Doctor (JD) candidate, poised to make substantive contributions to reshaping healthcare policies and the rights of marginalized populations. Given the opportunity to attend the esteemed Georgia State University College of Law, I vow to uphold the institution's mission, striving to be an exemplary student and carry forth the institution's values throughout my academic pursuit and endeavors within the legal profession.
