    Women in Healthcare Scholarship
As a Haitian-American woman, I have felt a deep calling to pursue a degree in healthcare and make a positive impact in this field. Growing up, I witnessed firsthand the disparities and challenges that many in my community face when it comes to accessing quality, culturally-competent healthcare. Too often, Haitian-Americans and other minority groups encounter language barriers, implicit biases, and a lack of representation among healthcare providers. This has fueled my passion to become a registered nurse (RN) and be a voice for underserved populations. In my current role as a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN), I have gained invaluable hands-on experience caring for patients and seeing the profound difference that empathetic, knowledgeable healthcare professionals can make. However, I am eager to expand my scope of practice and take on greater responsibilities as an RN. I hope to leverage my bilingual fluency in English and Haitian Creole to bridge communication gaps, build trust with Haitian-American patients, and ensure they receive the high-quality, culturally-sensitive care they deserve. Through my nursing education and clinical training, I will develop a deeper understanding of complex medical conditions, refine my critical thinking and decision-making skills, and cultivate the leadership abilities needed to advocate for my patients. Moreover, as a Haitian-American woman, I will bring a unique perspective and set of experiences that will allow me to better understand and relate to the challenges that many of my patients face. I hope to be a role model and inspiration to other young Haitian-American women, demonstrating that with hard work and dedication, they too can pursue careers in healthcare and make a meaningful difference in their communities. Through my nursing practice, I aspire to not only deliver excellent clinical care, but to also be a champion for health equity, bridging gaps in access and ensuring that all patients, regardless of their background, receive the high-quality, culturally-sensitive treatment they deserve. This is my calling, and I am committed to using my knowledge, skills, and lived experience to positively transform the healthcare landscape for Haitian-Americans and other marginalized populations. Ultimately, I aspire to work in community health settings, where I can proactively address social determinants of health, connect underrepresented groups to vital resources, and empower individuals to take an active role in managing their wellbeing. By bringing my unique cultural background, empathy, and commitment to excellence, I am confident that I can make a lasting, positive impact on the healthcare landscape and improve health outcomes for more of my patients.

As a Haitian immigrant, I have faced my fair share of significant adversity and challenges that threatened to derail the goals and dreams I had set for myself. One such experience stands out vividly in my memory. When I first arrived in this new country, I was filled with hope and determination to build a better life for myself. However, I quickly encountered a series of daunting obstacles that threatened to crush those aspirations. Language barriers, cultural differences, and a lack of access to resources created an uphill battle that at times felt insurmountable. I distinctly remember the feelings of isolation and self-doubt that crept in as I struggled to navigate an unfamiliar system and find my footing. Just making ends meet and securing stable employment was an immense challenge. There were many times I felt like giving up, when the weight of it all threatened to overwhelm me. I refused to let those setbacks define me. I drew upon the resilience and perseverance that are deeply ingrained in my Haitian identity. I sought out support systems within my immigrant community, leaning on the shared experiences and guidance of those who had walked a similar path. I worked tirelessly to improve my English skills, to learn the unwritten rules of this new society, and to develop the professional network I needed to find meaningful work. It was not an easy journey by any means, filled with frustration, sacrifice, and no shortage of failures along the way. Yet with each small victory, my confidence grew, and I began to see a path forward. The lessons I learned about the importance of grit, adaptability, and maintaining hope in the face of adversity have stayed with me to this day. They have shaped me into a more resilient, empathetic, and determined individual - one who is not easily deterred from pursuing their dreams, no matter the obstacles that may arise. That foundational experience as a Haitian immigrant continues to inspire me to keep pushing forward, to embrace challenges as opportunities for growth, and to never lose sight of what is possible with hard work and an unwavering spirit. From navigating the complexities of a new language and culture, to overcoming financial hardships and societal biases, the road to becoming a Licensed Practical Nurse has been paved with hard-won victories. Yet, with unwavering perseverance and an unyielding passion for the nursing profession, I have managed to not only earn my LPN certification, but to continue thriving in my nursing career. Each hurdle I've had to clear has only made me more resilient, more adaptable, and more empathetic towards the struggles of others. The adversity I've faced has instilled in me a deep appreciation for the opportunity to provide compassionate care, and to make a positive impact on the lives of my patients. Though the journey has been arduous at times, I take immense pride in the progress I've made, knowing that my story is a testament to the power of determination and the triumph of the human spirit in the face of adversity. As I continue to navigate the challenges of the nursing profession, I am fueled by the knowledge that my experiences as a Haitian immigrant have made me a stronger, more well-rounded, and more capable advocate for my patients.

As long as I can remember, I've felt a deep calling to help and care for others. Growing up in a Haitian immigrant family deeply inspired my decision to become a nurse. From a young age, I witnessed the challenges and barriers my parents faced in navigating the healthcare system as non-native English speakers. They often struggled to communicate their needs and concerns to medical providers, leading to frustration, confusion, and a lack of proper care. Seeing my parents' difficulties firsthand instilled in me a profound desire to be the type of compassionate, culturally-sensitive healthcare professional they so desperately needed. I wanted to be a bridge, someone who could advocate for immigrant patients like my family and ensure they received the high-quality, tailored care they deserved. As I learned more about the nursing field, I was drawn to its holistic, patient-centered approach - the opportunity to not just treat symptoms, but to truly understand each individual's unique background, values, and needs. Becoming a nurse would allow me to make a tangible difference in the lives of marginalized immigrant communities, just as I wished someone had been there for my own parents. This personal connection, born out of my family's experiences, has fueled my passion for nursing and my commitment to being a voice for the underserved. I am driven to leverage my bicultural understanding and linguistic abilities to break down barriers, provide culturally competent care, and empower immigrant patients to take an active role in managing their health. Pursuing a career in nursing is my way of honoring my family's resilience and sacrifices, and of paying forward the compassion I wish they had received. The nursing field has always captivated me, with its blend of scientific expertise, compassionate patient-centered care, and the opportunity to make a tangible difference in people's lives. Growing up, I was inspired by the nurses in my own family who selflessly dedicated themselves to this noble profession, tending to the sick and injured with unwavering kindness and skill. Watching them provide comfort, advocate for their patients, and use their knowledge to solve complex medical challenges left a lasting impression on me. I was in awe of their ability to navigate high-pressure situations with a calm, reassuring demeanor, and I knew that I wanted to follow in their footsteps. When it came time to choose a career path, the decision to pursue nursing was an easy one. I was drawn to the diverse responsibilities and opportunities the field offers - from delivering hands-on bedside care, to collaborating with interdisciplinary teams, to taking on leadership roles that shape the future of healthcare. The intellectual challenge of mastering a vast medical knowledge base while also honing essential soft skills like empathy, communication, and critical thinking was incredibly appealing to me. And above all, the chance to be a source of comfort and healing for patients during their most vulnerable moments is what truly ignites my passion. Every day, I have the privilege of making a tangible difference in people's lives, and that sense of purpose and fulfillment is what continues to inspire me in my nursing journey. It's a calling that extends far beyond just a job - it's a lifelong commitment to serving others with excellence, expertise, and an unwavering dedication to the wellbeing of my patients.

I have been interested in Nursing ever since I found out my school had an LPN program. I applied for it in my junior year and it grew my passion and what I didn’t know about Nursing before. For example, all the different types of routes I could take depending on what type of nurse I’d choose to become, the huge demand for nurses currently, and how the skills I learned in the program also would help me learn things that’d help me in day to day activities that would help me save others lives as well. Not only has this new information helped me learn more about nursing itself but it made me want to become either a pediatrics nurse or a informatics nurse. I’m deciding between these two pathways because I have a knack when it comes to communicating/caring for kids and since I’m the youngest in my family I’ve always wondered what’d it be like to have a younger sibling that I could help take care of as well. When it comes to informatics nursing I like researching, and doing my fair share of work electronically because I can catch on quickly when it comes to doing new things specifically online. In terms of why I chose Nursing ever since I started high school I was interested in the medical field and when I found out my school had an LPN program I applied for it in my junior year and it grew my passion and what I didn’t know about Nursing before. I believe continuing my nursing education at Palm Beach State will help me in the process of becoming a seasoned nurse and to provide better care for my patients.

Nurses are professionals who dedicate their lives to helping and bettering people’s lives. Nurses aid everyone from the time of birth to the time of death as well as many life stages in between. Loved ones of those who are helped by nurses rely on nurses to help make their sister, brother, child, or parent healthier. The wish that everyone has for their loved ones to be treated with respect and compassion is determined by the passion and hard work a nurse has. I believe that one day I will be able to be a nurse who has a great amount passion for helping people and the determination to do all I can to help those in need. There are many reasons why I want to achieve my goal of being a helpful nurse and pursue a career in nursing. I believe my continuous dedication in school will be beneficial to me during my time in the nursing program. My attention to the information received will help me while I am in clinicals and the various labs throughout the program. I have always been a very hard-working student and I always put my education first. I think it is very important to attend classes and ask questions when information is not clear and I do not understand. I believe that there are not many other careers that can help individuals on a personal level that can help as many lives as nursing does. Nursing will give me opportunities to showcase my organizational and quick decision-making skills while maintaining compassion and a calming presence. I have always been interested in pursuing a career in nursing ever since entering the LPN program at Inlet Grove Community High School. I feel that Practical Nursing sets the stage for a Registered Nurse. I have always wanted to be a Registered Nurse as well. After completing these two short-term goals, I am going to pursue and reach my long-term goals which are, getting my BSN in nursing, taking a gap year to strengthen my abilities as a nurse, going back to school to get my master, and doctorate so I can open my own clinic one day. The first long-term goal that I mentioned is getting my BSN in nursing. Having your BSN in nursing opens so many endless possibilities and opportunities to help those in need and allows you to go into any path of nursing that interests you. Finally, I feel that I should be considered for this scholarship because of the unique abilities I can put to use when I graduate, and earning this scholarship will help me get one step closer to being able to pay for nursing school moving forward. I hope you consider my application and thank you for your time.

When I was little I was always scared of going to places like the hospital or doctors office but one person changed my mindset one day and that was my doctor. Unlike my past experiences of going to a doctors office and usually being scared to get a shot this doctor I had actually took my feelings into consideration on how I felt scared about getting a shot and reassured me that it would pinch but it would help to keep me healthy which lessened my fears a bit. As I grew up, I realized that I wanted to be a person that someone could rely on if they’re scared or have someone to listen to them because it feels like no one else is. This experience made me realize that I wanted to go into the healthcare field specifically in nursing. I have always been interested in pursuing a career in nursing ever since entering the LPN program at Inlet Grove Community High School. The nursing industry interests me as a career choice because it’s not just about caring for your patients but seeing that your actions towards the care you put in for them made a difference. Nurses are professionals who dedicate their lives to helping and bettering people’s lives. Nurses aid everyone from the time of birth to the time of death as well as many life stages in between. I believe that one day I will be able to be a nurse who has a great amount passion for helping people and the determination to do all I can to help those in need. My goals for a successful career would be to pass my exit and NCLEX exam in the nursing program that my high school offers so I can get my LPN license, and finishing my pre-requisites at Palm Beach State to continue my nursing education further and one day become a nurse practitioner owning my own clinic one day. Some personal accomplishments of mine that have helped me to pursue these goals were keeping my grades and GPA in tip top shape so I could enter the nursing program and passing my major tests along the way to continue being in the nursing program. Some medical experience I have includes going to nursing homes to shadow CNA’s while they worked, volunteering in the Big Brother Big Sister program in a school for autistic children and adults, going to different schools to teach them about different topics such as how to stop the bleed, how to do CPR, and how to prevent infections. I believe that there are not many other careers that can help individuals on a personal level that can help as many lives as nursing does. I have always been interested in pursuing a career in nursing ever since entering the LPN program at Inlet Grove Community High School. This program is an obstacle that I feel I've faced ever since my junior year of high school. It's made me learn how competitive the field and work will be once I enter college and that a test score doesn't define your abilities as a nurse and shouldn't make you give up nursing altogether. Also how your own class can be as close as a family with one another when going through tribulations in and outside the classroom. I feel that Practical Nursing sets the stage for a Registered Nurse. I've stayed optimistic through tough times by reminding myself that I don't go through things alone and that there are others who most likely go through the same things I do and knowing that they are there for me and are only a call or a text a away. Another way I've stayed positive is by cutting out all the things in my life that give off negativity and only focusing on the things that radiate positivity to me and the people around me as well. All of these things have taught me that as I get older it's not abnormal to end relationships with people who you might've known your whole life because it's normal for people to grow in two different directions and give their full attention to the different priorities in life that they may have compared to you. On top of that, it's taught me that as a person I shouldn't let any external factors limit my growth in my life for other people's benefit and that I should be proud of myself for my accomplishments and learn to believe in myself more no matter what anyone says or the obstacles I may face while achieving what I want in life.
