My current journey as a graduate student has brought me to KYCC, the Koreatown Youth and Community Center, a non-profit agency nestled in the heart of Koreatown. Here, I serve a diverse and dynamic population, spanning from the tender age of zero to young adults up to 25. My role revolves around working with children and families from low-income backgrounds, a commitment that I uphold with unwavering dedication. I devote my time to this internship twice a week, full-time, despite the lack of financial compensation.
Before I ventured into the realm of this internship, I occupied a full-time position as a Resident Service Coordinator, a role that involved providing essential case management services to low-income seniors living in affordable housing. The objective was clear: to elevate their overall quality of life. This hands-on experience allowed me to witness the transformative power of support and assistance in the lives of vulnerable individuals.
My educational journey is a Master's in Counseling program, and I currently find myself in my second year of study. My primary goal is to establish a career in the helping profession, with a keen specialization in the field of mental health. This path was not chosen lightly; it followed profound introspection and an unshakeable belief in the critical importance of mental health. In today's fast-paced world, mental health often goes unnoticed, despite being as crucial as physical health. To me, the mental well-being of individuals has always been a matter of deep social concern.
This commitment to mental health arises from both a personal and compassionate perspective. I have faced my own emotional struggles, and I've witnessed those around me battling similar challenges. These experiences have instilled in me a profound belief in the value of a robust support system and professional assistance. I've come to understand that even the smallest acts of kindness, a word of encouragement, or a comforting gesture can hold immense transformative power in an individual's life.
My vision is clear: I aim to contribute to a brighter and more empathetic future for our society. I aspire to channel therapeutic energy towards those in emotional need, helping them find strength and resilience in their moments of vulnerability. My future plan after graduation is rooted in this aspiration; I intend to continue working in the mental health field, offering therapy sessions to individuals who require mental and emotional support. My ultimate goal is to be a source of solace and guidance for those navigating the complexities of their emotional well-being.
However, the path to achieving this goal is not without its financial challenges. Pursuing a higher education is often accompanied by significant costs, and graduate studies are no exception. This is where the importance of the scholarship I'm seeking becomes evident. It would not only support my educational journey but also serve as a cornerstone for my career aspirations.
In conclusion, my journey as a graduate student is marked by a strong commitment to serving the underprivileged, a deep-seated belief in the significance of mental health, and an unwavering aspiration to be a beacon of support for those in need. The scholarship I'm seeking would be an invaluable asset in achieving these aspirations, aiding me in my education and ultimately enabling me to build a successful career as a mental health therapist.

Mental Health Importance Scholarship
From the outset of my career, I found myself immersed in the lives of a vulnerable population – Medi-Cal eligible, low-income seniors facing an array of mental disorders including depression, anxiety, Alzheimer’s, and dementia. As a social worker at an Adult Day Health Care, I assumed the role of a guardian of their well-being, a beacon of hope in their often-challenging circumstances. The privilege of crafting personalized care plans and orchestrating interventions to kindle emotional healing and bolster overall health drove home the vital importance of empathy-driven, comprehensive care.
Collaboration became my mantra as I seamlessly integrated into multidisciplinary teams, pooling our collective resources to weave a safety net of support for our clients. The cognitive stimulation therapy I provided was a conduit to restore memories that were slipping away, while motivational-enhancement therapy breathed new life into weary souls shrouded by depression. My role extended beyond a mere vocation; it was an unwavering commitment to ushering these seniors towards a brighter horizon, one where compassion and dignity reign.
Transitioning to the role of a Resident Service Coordinator marked a new chapter in my journey. In tandem with my prior experiences, I continued to serve seniors, this time within the context of affordable housing. My tasks centered on enhancing their quality of life by facilitating access to resources and nurturing a sense of community. I marveled at the power of collaboration to create ripples of positive change in the lives of these cherished residents.
Simultaneously, my quest for knowledge led me to embark on a Master's in Counseling program. This decision was born from a deep-seated belief that mental health is a cornerstone of overall well-being, deserving of the same attention and care as physical health. My personal struggles and those of my loved ones illuminated the profound impact that compassionate support can wield in the face of emotional adversity. I am resolute in my conviction that even the smallest gestures of warmth and care can spark a transformation, rekindling the light within.
As I gaze towards the future, my heart resonates with a singular purpose: to infuse the lives of those I touch with therapeutic energy, to foster healing, and to empower individuals to script their own stories of resilience and renewal. Through my journey from social worker to Resident Service Coordinator, and now as an aspiring mental health specialist, I am poised to channel my unwavering empathy into a force for change. I am committed to illuminating lives, one step at a time, and to paving the way for a society where emotional well-being is celebrated, supported, and cherished.

In an era fraught with unprecedented challenges, the world faces an urgent and complex mental health crisis that demands a compassionate and dedicated response. It is my unwavering belief that my experiences as a social worker have uniquely prepared me to contribute meaningfully to alleviating the burdens of this crisis and facilitating healing for those who need it most. Guided by a deep-seated commitment to compassionate care and driven by the transformative experiences I have encountered, I am resolute in my decision to pursue a career in the field of mental health.
My journey began as a social worker at an Adult Day Health Care, where I had the privilege of working closely with a vulnerable population of low-income seniors, many of whom were grappling with mental disorders such as depression, anxiety, Alzheimer's, and dementia. Witnessing their struggles and being entrusted with their stories ignited a passion within me to provide comprehensive and empathetic care. As I conducted assessments and formulated tailored care plans, I realized that my role extended beyond a mere job; it was a calling to restore dignity, hope, and joy to lives that had been overshadowed by darkness.
The heart of my mission was to bridge the gap between their needs and available resources. I collaborated seamlessly with multidisciplinary teams, engaging in a collective effort to provide holistic support. Through cognitive stimulation therapy for memory loss and motivational-enhancement therapy for depression, I witnessed the power of empathy in guiding individuals toward resilience and recovery. I also facilitated access to vital social services, ensuring that every individual had the opportunity to thrive and access the care they deserved.
With the rise of the current mental health crisis, my dedication to this field has only grown stronger. The global pandemic has exacerbated the isolation and despair that many individuals already face, underscoring the urgency of my chosen path. It is not enough to merely acknowledge the crisis; we must respond with unwavering compassion, empathy, and action. My experiences have taught me that every interaction, every intervention, and every connection can make a profound difference in someone's life.
As I transitioned to my role as a resident service coordinator, I continued to expand my horizons and refine my skills. This progression symbolizes my commitment to personal and professional growth, allowing me to better serve those in need. Every step of my journey has reaffirmed my calling to address the mental health crisis with unwavering dedication and empathy.

In a world characterized by intricate complexities and rapid societal changes, few issues resonate as profoundly as the escalating mental health crisis. Defined by an alarming surge in psychological distress, this multidimensional challenge has sparked an unwavering passion within me to embark on a career dedicated to alleviating the burdens borne by individuals in their pursuit of holistic well-being. My transformative journey, tracing a path from the role of a dedicated social worker to that of a compassionate Resident Service Coordinator (RSC), has steadfastly fortified my commitment to this noble mission. Rooted in the pillars of empathy, community-building, comprehensive care, academic enrichment, and an unwavering belief in the transformative power of emotional support, I stand poised to contribute significantly to the ongoing discourse surrounding mental health.
My professional voyage embarked with a determined stride into the role of a social worker, a mantle I donned as a compassionate guardian entrusted with the well-being of designated clients at a distinguished Adult Day Health Care facility. Within the dynamic and ever-evolving realm of senior care, vulnerability emerged as a shared thread among those who sought our sanctuary—individuals who were not only Medi-Cal eligible and low-income, but who also grappled with the intricate tapestry of mental health concerns. The spectrum of diagnoses spanned a rich spectrum, ranging from the well-documented shades of depression and anxiety to the nuanced hues of Alzheimer's and dementia. In the crucible of this human mosaic, I uncovered a profound calling, etched into the fabric of these diverse and often labyrinthine challenges.
My role at the Adult Day Health Care center was pivotal in crystallizing my unwavering determination to carve a niche within the expansive landscape of mental health. Within the confines of this dynamic environment, I bore witness to the transformative potential of comprehensive care. My primary responsibilities encompassed the meticulous orchestration of diligent case management, the perpetual assessment of clients' evolving needs, and the strategic formulation of care plans tailored to elevate not only their emotional equilibrium but also their overall state of health. The synergy of my carefully tailored interventions and treatments emanated from a deep wellspring of empathy, illuminating the path toward emotional rejuvenation and holistic recovery that had hitherto been obscured.
At the heart of my approach lay the art of forging intimate alliances with diverse multidisciplinary teams. This dynamic collaboration orchestrated a symphony of care, with each note contributing to a harmonious array of services meticulously calibrated to address the multifaceted needs of our clients. My contributions, however, extended beyond the realm of administrative duties, encompassing a deeper exploration of the profound realm of emotional therapy. My toolkit expanded to encompass a diverse array of interventions, including cognitive stimulation therapy designed to cater to clients on the cusp of memory loss. For those entrapped in the clutches of depression, my team and I became beacons of hope, offering the transformative power of motivational-enhancement therapy during their darkest hours.
A tangible testament to the fulfilling nature of my role as a social worker lay in my direct engagement with the facilitation of access to essential social service resources. Guiding clients through the intricate maze of processes involved in medical renewals, food stamps applications, enrollment in energy discount programs, and access to IHSS provider services became emblematic of the compassionate care that had become an indelible hallmark of my professional identity. Over the course of my three-year tenure, I bore witness to countless lives touched and irrevocably transformed by the power of comprehensive support.
Transitioning into the role of a Resident Service Coordinator marked an inflection point in my voyage, propelling my mission to enhance the quality of life for senior residents residing in affordable housing. The cozy confines of apartment communities became my canvas for orchestrating a symphony of care that mirrored, yet expanded upon, the principles I had honed as a social worker. My responsibilities spanned a wide spectrum, each anchored in my core values: the meticulous choreography of activities, the nurturing of community engagement, and the provision of a vital lifeline of resources to these cherished residents.
As my professional narrative continued its evolution, my journey assumed an academic dimension of enrichment. The pursuit of a Master's degree in Counseling beckoned to me, offering a platform to delve more deeply into the intricate tapestry of mental health. My decision was fortified by a profound realization – that mental health, despite its paramount importance, often languishes in the shadow of its physical counterpart. Through personal encounters with mental health struggles, both within my own life and the lives of those dear to me, I was instilled with an unwavering belief in the transformative potential of a robust support system and professional guidance.
Central to my unwavering conviction is the belief that even the most fleeting expressions of affection, care, and warmth harbor the potential to catalyze profound transformation. These beliefs are not mere sentiments; they constitute the bedrock upon which I have constructed my aspirations. As I traverse the crossroads where my roles as a social worker, Resident Service Coordinator, and aspiring mental health specialist intersect, I am animated by a singular purpose – to harness the therapeutic energy that resides within me and channel it toward those who are in emotional need.
The evolution of my journey has endowed me with a profound understanding of the intricate interplay between mental health and overall well-being. Beyond individual circumstances, I have come to recognize that the mental health crisis is not an isolated phenomenon; rather, it is a reflection of broader societal issues. Stigmatization, disparities in resource access, and prevailing societal attitudes all play pivotal roles in either exacerbating or mitigating mental health challenges. This heightened awareness has impelled me to adopt a more comprehensive approach, one that encompasses advocacy, education, and destigmatization.
Within the realm of my role as a Resident Service Coordinator, I have been uniquely positioned to witness the transformative power of community engagement. The intricate web of relationships woven within affordable housing communities underscores the significance of social connections as potent protective factors against mental health struggles. My endeavors to orchestrate activities that foster camaraderie, emotional support, and a profound sense of belonging have solidified my belief that holistic care extends far beyond clinical interventions; it involves nurturing a sense of community that bolsters emotional resilience and fosters healing.
The pursuit of a Master's in Counseling has been an intellectual and personal odyssey, a journey that enables me to synthesize theoretical constructs with pragmatic applications. Delving into the nuances of therapeutic modalities, ethical considerations, and cultural competence has deepened my understanding of the intricate tapestry of mental health. This academic voyage empowers me to champion evidence-based practices, advocate for policies that prioritize mental health on a societal level, and engage in dialogues that broaden our collective comprehension of this pressing issue.
In summation, my journey stands as an enduring testament to the profound impact that empathy can wield in addressing the mental health crisis. From that day and until now after I have lost my friend. It was a very difficult season for me but I have gradually recovered and has started to study going back to school. This was a moment so powerful for me, and I wanted to be there for the people suffering from mental health conditions like depression, anxiety, and grief. Nothing feels more empowering than to take a part in healing and protecting the mind and spirit of people.
Currently, I am in my second year as a social worker, managing cases of designated clients at an affordable housing serving seniors. Working as a social worker played a pivotal role in my decision to pursue this field. I see real social issues at work and if the patients’ needs are left untreated, the issues won’t go away on their own. Our clients fall under a vulnerable population who are Medi-Cal eligible, low-income seniors needing assistance and attention. Diagnoses of mental disorders range widely though the majority of our clients are diagnosed with depression, Anxiety, Alzheimer’s, and/or dementia. During the counseling sessions with my patients, I often face my limitations in the lack of skills and knowledge. The fact that I cannot assist my patients to the full extent due to my limited ability brings me disappointment from time to time.
I have been admitted to the Master in Counseling program specializing towards becoming a mental health therapist. I want to apply my newly acquired knowledge and skills on site, in a real world of mental health. While I have been mainly serving the senior patients thus far, I do not want to limit myself only to that demographic but instead, I want to help people from all backgrounds including families, couples, and young and aspiring individuals. I want to thrive in any work settings providing help with counseling therapy in private practices, community and agency settings, clinics, hospital, and government-based settings. I, one day, desire to apply my knowledge to be put to good use and fulfill my role as mental health therapists to those who seek help.

Currently, I am working as a resident service coordinator serving low-income seniors at an affordable housing. I have been providing resources and coordinating activities to improve the overall well-being for the seniors who have physical disabilities. I personally check up on my residents who are also my clients who I conduct assessment and do provide one to one session as part of my roles in the job. Most of the time, when the resident share their difficulties in life, I mainly listen to them and show empathetic hearing as this can help them release their feelings and emotions at the moment. I also apply what I learn at school as a current student using the basic gist of CBT model. How are feelings, thoughts, and behaviors are interconnected. I would ask residents what makes them feel happy or enjoy doing. Encouraging them to set a goal for themselves that can do to self-reward themselves that they deserve. Also irrational and negatively hold thoughts would be challenged to them and reframing those thoughts positively.
While I am working, I have been studying the Master in Counseling Psychology program specializing towards becoming a mental health therapist. I started the program this year in April, and I chose this path as I I deeply hold the belief that even the slightest expression of affection, care, and words of warmth can be powerful agents to change a person's life. I want to create a bright future for our society by bringing therapeutic energy to those who are emotionally in need. Everyone has their darkest moments in life. It is not something that one can overcome easily by one’s own power of will. We need love, patience, and special attention for those who are struggling through
Ethel Hayes Destigmatization of Mental Health Scholarship
I had a cousin, named Aaron, whom I have lost contact with for many years. One day, in the month of October, 2019, he contacted me. We got to meet up in a long while, and he told me his story. He had been going through depression. Once, he shared that his degree of depression was so severe that he actually thought of committing suicide. I had overwhelming mixed emotions hearing after this. I could sense what Aaron was feeling. The sense of loneliness and emptiness he has felt to come all this way. Emotions of compassion, pain, sorrow, and thankfulness filled within me. I felt thankful that he was able to share his personal story with me. I was very careful in what words to choose to console Aaron. Before we parted away, I told Aaron that I truly care for him and that there are other people like his family and friends that feel the same way. For over a year, I consistently met up with Aaron once a week. I went over to his place and we spent time eating, talking, and doing activities together. I really wanted to show him through my actions that somewhere out there someone thinks and cares for him. From that day and until now, Aaron has gradually recovered and he has started to study going back to school. One time, Aaron messaged me on a random day that he is thankful to me for staying by his side when he was needed the most. It was one of the happiest times in my life. At that moment, I wanted to live my life meaningfully with a sense of purpose in life. It breaks my heart to hear and see people suffering from mental health conditions like depression, anxiety, and grief. Nothing feels more empowering than to take a part in healing and protecting the mind and spirit of people.
Mental Health Importance Scholarship
Mental health is significant as much as physical health. Our mind controls our behaviors in life, and the way think and feel affects our whole body and also affects the way we think about others and about our world. Having a healthy mind leads to healthy body as well as our mind is interconnected with our physical body. Staying mindful and trying to think of any maladaptive thoughts to come to my mind and bringing awareness to that is what helps me to maintain my mental wellness. Also getting out to take a breeze and seeing the nature is truly relaxing and healing.

Bold Generosity Matters Scholarship
I think generosity is a willing sacrifice a person happily offers to someone. In our capitalist society, many people have a calculative mindset where people would not commit to actions that does not generate any profits to them. Generosity is sharing the things one has to others in any means, it can be monetary but simply a heart of generosity. Donating a grant to an organization to giving a dollar to a homeless person are generosity a person willingly gives. Generosity does not expect anything in return. Generosity is something that is genuine.

After graduating with a bachelor’s degree in Sociology, I have continuously been working in the social work setting helping predominately senior and low-income population. Since last year, I have been working at low-income affordable senior housing providing individual services to residents at our apartment. I have been coordinated resources including providing weekly food assistance, facilitating origami class for social connection and to stimulate cognition for our seniors. I have been helping to build our community specifically our senior residents to be more independent at their living and have a happy, stable life.
I have decided to pursue my degree in counseling since I enjoy meeting new people and by professionally applying therapeutically techniques will certainly help me to treat people who are emotionally in distress. I have high concerns over mental health issues and oftentimes mental health disorder is stigmatized in our society.
Our perception about the world is not easily changed but with the work of efforts and time, change can happen. Social change does not solely happen from one person but requires team effort. Spreading the word of news to the world great movement is essential for change to happen.

Ever since I was a child, I had to change school several times due to instability in our family's financial status. The financial difficulty that our family had to dealt with had instilled in me of sense of lack and powerlessness. Accumulation of uncertainties in life and unstable experiences during my adolescence has naturally led me to a dark phase in life. I experienced symptoms of depression exhibiting lack of motivation, low energy, and negativity. When symptoms were severe, I wished that I would not open my eyes the next morning. I could not solely overcome these struggles on my own, but I managed to overcome those times by talking to the closest people who knew my situations very well. My biggest comfort was to talk to my sister who shared similar life struggles as mine. She knew where I stand in life. I had deep conversations with my sister and intimate friends who deeply cared about my well-being. Genuine concerns and attention helped me gain my strength back.
The recent and ongoing issue of Covid-19 pandemic devastated many peoples’ lives and the demands in mental health services are ever arising. For the past three years I have been working as a social worker, serving predominately senior clients with diagnosis of one or more of depression, Anxiety, Alzheimer’s, and/or dementia. One day, I had a patient who called in to tell me that she has been feeling more depressed and has lost tremendous amount of motivation to carry on life due to prolonged social isolation. She did not have any families and friends around her and the only support she had was via ADHC. She appreciated me taking the time to talk to her and simply by hearing her stories. I validated her feelings and thoughts and after the whole session was over she confirmed with me that she feels so much better. I still check with her time to time and provide counseling sessions for her. I believe there is great power for just being there for others in the same presence and provide emotional ventilation and support by just offering one’s ears. Listening to others is the first step to recovery and healing for people.
I deeply hold the belief that even the slightest expression of affection, care, and words of warmth can be powerful to change a person's life. I want to create a brighter future for our society by becoming a mental health therapist. Currently I am taking classes for my graduate program specializing in the Counseling field. I am also working as a social worker at an affordable housing to serve low-income senior residents in meeting their needs.

Everyone has their darkest moments in life. It is not something that one can overcome easily by one’s own power of will. We need love, patience, and special attention for those who are struggling emotionally. Letting people know that they are not alone. I deeply hold the belief that even the slightest expression of affection, care, and words of warmth can be powerful to change a person's life. I want to create a brighter future for our society.

Using a breathing technique helps me as my heart beats faster when I have running thoughts and surge of anxiety hits me in life. I use the 4-7-8 technique where one inhales for 4 seconds, hold onto the breath for 7 seconds, and exhaling for 8 seconds. Our mind and physical body are connected and by controlling our physical symptoms by applying breathing technique is very useful for me.
Also taking a walk and moving my body somehow release the tension in me and helps me to clear my mind as my body is moving. When having an anxiety, my body cannot control to be still and moving my body by taking the mean of walking alleviate me and calms me down.
While I am having trouble sleeping, I turn on raindrops on repeat, the sound of raindrops also gives me a source of relief and having no sounds when I am at the darkest moment causes me to be more anxious. Seeing the nature and also hearing the sound of it are the greatest gifts for me.

As a current grad student studying in the Counseling psychology aiming to become a mental health therapist, I would help people struggling with mental health by reframing their negativity thoughts to positivity. I also receive therapy once a week to maintain my mental health and it has helped me to reframe my thoughts in way that is more self-empowering instead of my usual down-spiral thought of bringing myself down. I had once told a therapist that I do not know where my life is going and I feel like a failure that I still do not what I am good at in life or that I cannot find my direction in life and I feel useless about myself. All I said from beginning till the end was negative ideas. However, my therapist still looked for positivity in my statement by saying that the fact that I am thinking this thoughts shows that I am still in the search of my journey in life, and my overly worries and concerns shows that I want improvements and desire the better for myself. This reframing of thought had consoled me and it helped me to actually choose this path in mental health to become a therapist to offer a guidance and help to others.
Just by changing our perceptions of our day to day life can make a difference, and thought is a powerful contributor to our action. For instance, instead of thinking that the glass is half empty, seeing it as the glass being half full definitely brings a positive perception to how we see about things.
Advancing Social Justice for Asians Scholarship
I am currently serving the Asian seniors at an affordable senior housing. As a resident service coordinator, I provide social resources and help maintain a healthy, warming enviornment to the seniors.
It is devasting and infuriating as a fellow Asian to see media coverage of Asians becoming the victims in our society. Although Covid-19 triggered this Anti-Asian sentiment within our community, I also agree that discrimination has been in existence for some time. Our cultures being seen as "passive" naturally leads Asians to be seen as a "weak" race. Unlike the Black movement, Asians have been demonstrating protests in a non-violent manner. I am not justifying violence, but I think that the black movement has received much more attention from the public due to violence involvement. Asians can still bring awareness to public attention in peace.
I have actively used social media to stop Asian-hate crime. I would share posts and stories for people to be more aware of this discrimination and how wrong that is. Within our building who the majority are Asians, I would remind our senior adults to always be cautious when they are walking the neighborhood. With this grant, this will help me support me to pursue my study in counseling. I am currently pursuing my study in the field of mental health counseling. With this degree, I want to help and provide therapy as a mean to help people who are in needs of emotional support. I want to raise awareness and place importance on our mental health. I believe healthy mind equates to healthy body.

Currently I am enrolled to Masters in Counseling Psychology at NU and my first official class will start in April. This degree will help me to make my dream into a reality. After graduating with a Bachelor’s degree in Sociology, I have been continuously been working in the social work setting helping predominately senior and low-income population. It has been 4 years working in this field when I realized that education is important in order for me to work in a more specialized field of counseling. I faced my limitation with my bachelor’s degree and in a society where the standard of living is arising so as our education qualifications. The importance of education has hit me when I actually went out into the real world. I wanted to pursue my career by providing professional counseling therapy to clients in need of emotional help.
I enjoyed meeting new people and by professionally applying therapeutically techniques will certainly help me to treat people who are emotionally in distress. I have high concerns over mental health issues and oftentimes mental health disorder is stigmatized in our society. I experienced dark moments in life when I had faced difficulties to see positivity due to so many life stressors. Life stressors can come from people, financial hardships, health issues, traumas, and much more. In this digital world, where technology is advancing the more we see phenomenon of alienation between people. We are living to be competitive in nature as jobs are getting saturated and mental disorders like depression and anxiety is ever more increasing. I see a lot of people around me also having at least one or more symptoms of mental disorders. Currently, I am also seeking a mental health therapist that I see once a week for my mental health. It has been helping me to vent out my suppressed emotions and feelings. Sometimes there are things that we cannot even express our thoughts to our close ones including families and friends. A listening ear from a stranger works as great source of comfort and healing for people.

I had immigrated to the U.S when I was 2nd grade in elementary. I feel so blessed and thankful that I had the opportunity to come to the U.S and being able to experience new language, culture, and diversity that U.S offers. Sometimes, I still have an ache in my heart when I think about my childhood. I had both good and bad memories, but bad memories is certainly not easy to forget. I had to move quite a lot of times during my adolescent due to financial instability of my parent's work. Our family struggled financially and we were not affluent compare to other asian households. I went to school that were predominately of students from hispanic and black communities. I was one of the few asian students. I had been called with racial slurs and I have been treated somewhat differently than others. I did not know where I actually belonged. I did not fit entirely with the typical asian communities not was I with my non-asian communities. I also felt like I was alone.

Coming from an asian background and living in the U.S as a DACA recipient has caused confusion in developing my identity as a whole at a young age. I did not know where I actually belonged. I always felt like I was incomplete due to my social status. Our family immigrated to U.S for the hopes of achieving the American dream where the land flowed with prosperity. Although I was legally able to work through the DACA program, my parents had to work through hard labor paid with close to minimum wages. Dr. Meme Heineman Scholarship
Currently, I am in my second year as a social worker, managing cases of designated clients at an Adult Day Health Care.
I have been admitted to the Master in Counseling program in the Psychology department specializing towards becoming a mental health therapist.

I still remember that day when I received a text message from my cousin Aaron, who I lost contact with for many years. Nothing feels more empowering than to take a part in healing and protecting the mind and spirit of people.
