My junior year of high school was somewhat unconventional. After having my freshman year cut short and having my whole sophomore year online, it was just nice to get back to school. As I went through the year, I found myself struggling a lot more than I had in the years prior. It was not an easy time and I had to stay disciplined. As with anything, there were both ups and downs.
No matter how hard things had gotten, I always remembered to appreciate my time at the high school. My favorite memory at Monroe High School was somewhat of a bittersweet one. On the last day of my junior year, my second hour decided to hold a potluck. Our teacher, Mr. Webb, was leaving the next year to teach at another school. It was upsetting because every single one of us enjoyed his class, but also him as a teacher.
On Friday, June 10th, 2022 we all gathered in his room with all of our dishes. We brought streamers, confetti, and party horns to celebrate. Everyone gathered their plate and sat around to play a game of Uno. The door was opened and welcomed everyone who could make it down. Kids from all of his classes came to celebrate and play games.
This is a moment that sticks with me because all of us came together to do something nice for a teacher we cared about. He made physics interesting for us and we all enjoyed his passion for the subject. Passion like this is rare in teaching. Another teacher that shared a passion like this was Mrs. Oddo. I never had the honor of having her as a teacher, but through my classmates, I have heard nothing but amazing things. My friends that had her all spoke highly of her and admired her passion for teaching. I have heard stories about her coming in on March 14th dressed up and singing songs to celebrate Pi Day with her students. Even though I never met her, part of her is still with me. Her passion for her job and math is hard to find. Teachers like her and Mr. Webb are crucial. Teachers like this help transform students' days from being long and boring into days where they come in and are excited to be learning. I aspire to have the same level of passion for my job when I get older that she had.
