Rho Brooks Women in STEM Scholarship
I come from a Filipino-Italian descent and am a proud American. I have been blessed through my family, and have been lucky enough to have been blessed with such an amazing family. My mom is my biggest influence in my life. She has been there through every bad and good moment in my life. When I was 13 years old, I hated math. I got low B’s on all of my tests and sometimes I would get some high C’s. I hated math so much.
Until one day, I asked my mom for help, since I didn’t understand the math concepts for 6 chapters. She was frustrated at first but she was still willing to help me understand it all in 1 night. I remember staying up till 2 am. Two years later, in high school, math became my favorite subject. I took AP Calculus for a short while and managed to get high A’s on all of my math tests. At the end of my sophomore year, I was the only person in my high school that earned the Special Recognition award for Academic Excellence. I owe all of this to my mom. Math is now my favorite subject and I can’t wait to pursue it in College.
My mom is my hero, and I am one of the lucky daughters who have a strong connection with their mom, she is in every decision that I make no matter how big or small. I am eternally grateful all of the time that she dedicated towards me and all of the sacrifices that she did. The only way that I can repay her back is to pursue my dreams of studying math and science in college. I know that I will make her proud one day, I just hope that it will be enough.
I owe my mom everything. This is not the first of the last time that she has been there for me. I will always be grateful to her for everything that she has done for me. I never would’ve been able to do this if it wasn’t for her. So thank you mom for everything you do. I love you so much.
Bold Bravery Scholarship
Bravery isn’t just physically shown. Bravery isn’t just getting in front of a crowd of people and publicly declaring that you will overcome that obstacle. Bravery comes from the inside. Bravery is when you overcome the doubtful voice inside your head saying that you aren’t good enough. It is going against the flow of the river, because you know that what you are doing is right. Bravery is truly becoming who you are, while getting rid of the mind degrading hurdles.
“ Courage is not having the strength to go on, It is going on when you don’t have the courage”
- Teddy Roosevelt
Having the courage and bravery to be true to ourselves is the best thing that we can do for. You are you’re greatest enemy. You are what’s stopping you from achieving anything you want in this world. No one or nothing else is. I show bravery and courage through fighting the insecure thoughts in my mind everyday. Bravery is not something that’s easy to do. To be brave, it takes an immense amount of courage.
In the quote above, courage is found when you have none to begin with. When you begin to push forward, that is when you feel courageous in your endeavors. We can’t give, take, or wish for courage. The only way to be brave and courageous is to just go out there and do it, even when everyone else around you is going the opposite way.
“Courage is knowing what not to fear ”
- Plato
If you know what you are not suppose to fear, and you are aware of it, then there is nothing else that can deter you from doing and accomplishing what you want in life. I hope you can have the chance to be brave. Thank you.
Bold Meaning of Life Scholarship
The meaning of life is found when you are with the people you love. If you have no one in this world then what meaning would there be in your life? The meaning of life is a phrase that is so overused. We have heard it in English lectures, and we have hears it through Philosophers. The true meaning of life can only be experienced with the people that you hold close to your heart.
We have learned that life is more fulfilling when you have someone to share it with. Why would anyone want to live alone on this Earth?
"The meaning of life is that it is to be lived"
-Bruce Lee
If you truly LIVED, you would understand the meaning of life and its power. We can understand the power of life if we explore the surroundings around us and reach out to the people around us. Living is different from existing. Living is doing the things in life that make you feel most alive, living is having the desire to live. Existing is the complete opposite, you do not have the desire to live. You only have the desire to exist and nothing more, that's it.
Bold Selfless Acts Scholarship
Giving is something that we have the ability to do. If we constantly take, we will never become truly satisfied with what we have. We will always be wanting more and more. But what most people don't realize, is that when we give back to others, it not only helps them but it also helps us as well. It helps us become better people and it helps to soothe our souls.
Our natural instincts are to help people and to give when people are in need. Yes, we are all guilty of wanting to take something because we want it. And we can't blame, others because we are only human. But if we try to learn to give more and take less, we will generally lead happier and more fulfilling lives. It is very important that we learn to do and practice this fairly often in life.
Do you remember that feeling on Christmas day when you're excited to open your presents? Well, do you also remember that feeling when you are excited for a certain person to open up a gift that you were waiting to give to them? Well, that is a kind of joy and excitement that you can feel through giving. It feels so good, and it keeps you on the edge of your seat just waiting for a response with tears of joy, or appreciation.
What I like to do to give back to the world is to help the less fortunate, I have been helping the homeless since I was ten years old and I have helped over +500 homeless people in Portland. I am an aspiring Physician and I want to give back to those people who have helped me, for the rest of my life. Thank you so much for reading this.
Bold Gratitude Scholarship

Bold Career Goals Scholarship
I have always dreamed about going into the medical field. The one thing that is stopping me is tuition. Medical school is very expensive and I do not come from a rich family. I always dreamt about becoming a Surgeon. Currently, I am thinking about becoming a General Surgeon, but I am still deciding between the specialties.
In five years, I see myself in the first year of med school. Breathing in the rush of excitement and fear of how daunting med school can be. I picture myself in New York, at Icahn School of Medicine, learning how to become a surgeon. I can see myself studying day and night and coming home to my family over winter break and talking to them about how amazing it is to study in New York, and how much I love studying to become a surgeon.
In 10 Years I see myself in my second year of surgical residency. I see myself helping people and taking care of them. I see myself saving lives, and learning different kinds of operations. I picture myself making long-term friends and feeling the rush of working in a hospital. I can't wait to be a General Surgeon and I can't wait to find out what God has in store for me.
“Mann Tracht, Un Gott Lacht” is an old Yiddish adage meaning, “Man Plans, and God Laughs.” Despite our most careful planning, the road of life still remains unpredicatable.
Bold Success Scholarship
I am still a bit unsure about what I want to be in the future. All I know is that I do not want to dissapoint my parents. They have done so much for me and the only way that I can repay them is to be successful in life. I always strive for excellence, whether it is having the best looking project in class, to becoming Magna Cum Laude in high school. I want to be the best version of myself that I can be.
" Success is not final, failure is not fatal, its the courage to continue that counts."
- Winston Churchill
I have learned that to be the best, it takes a lot of hardwork, dedication and sacrifice. To be the best, requires stamina, diligence, and how much you want it. Working hard is something that I have learned from both my mom and my dad. My dad never went to college. He met an amazing guy who taught him how to fix clocks and now he makes a great living out of it. I want to be like my parents. I want to work hard and strive for excellence, even if its in a different way that most people picture it.
Bold Reflection Scholarship
My life has been filled with memories that will live on forever. I have been lucky enough to have been blessed with an amazing family. My mom has been through so much as a child and as a young adult. Her father had to leave the family and work in Taiwan overseas just to make money for his family in the Philippines. My mom has taught me about hardship and how some people use it as a way out, to just let go of life and do whatever they want even if its harmful for their bodies. She also told me that some people use those hardships to fuel them to strive for a better life and to reverse the cards that they have been dealt.
Her hardships became the fuel for me wanting to live a good life and to make sure that my parents will be taken cared of in the future by me. Even though I never experienced harship, I still understand the power of how everything can change in an instant. Especially because of Covid, I have understood how quickly the aspects in life can change. I can only hope that in the future I will create a good life for my family and I.
Bold Fuel Your Life Scholarship
Family, dreams, and aspirations are what fuels me in life. Knowing that I have the people that I love beside me is the most feul that anyone can have in their life. It is overflowing and never-ending. They will be there for you through your ups and downs and they will guide you when you ask for help. They will be the people who stand beside you, whether they agree with your decisions or not. When everyone is against you, the only people that won't be will be your family.
My aspirations in life, is to be a loving daughter, a kind, sister, a good, friend, a studious student, and an amazing person. I want to be the best version of myself that I can be. My dreams in life, are to help make the world a better place, and to help those people in life that need an extra hand. I want to be the light that someone sees in the darkness and I want to be that kind gesture that heals the wounds that only compassion can heal.
Bold Speak Your Mind Scholarship
I like to picture that everyone in the room doesn't know what to say. I like to imagine and think that maybe, they are just as shy and scared as I am. And with that thinking process, I feel more confident about speaking up and saying what I think is right and true. I like to imagine that I am a black dot on a white piece of paper. A black dot, that although it is outnumbered, it still catches the eye of those who look upon that paper.
If I belive in something that is right and that something needs to change, then I will speak my mind about it. It's like what Ghandi said, "Be the change you wish to see in the world". I want to be that change, and I want to be that voice that delivers the change. Even if I am the only one standing on the right side, I will know that I made the right choice. I don't need numbers to tell me that I am right or wrong. All I need is to trust in God and myself.
Bold Encouraging Others Scholarship
I like to admire people for things that the do for me in life whether its big or small. I feel that if we acknowlege something that others do for us, it will encourage them to keep doing those good things. Think of it like someone lending you a pencil. If someone lent me a pencil and I didn't say thank you, or didn't return it, then they may never do that for me again. But if I were to aknowlege their kindness, then they would keep diong that good thing for other people too. I am trying my best to be more appreciative and to encourage others to be the same.
Showing appreciation for others is the one thing that will make you a better person and give off good vibes. Being kind and true to yourself and others will encouage kidness and reason to keep going in life. I am trying to be more appreciative to those people in my life who are always there for me. Sometimes, actually most times, I take them for granted and I also take their actions for granted. I need to learn how to be gratefuul for those kind gestures because it will encourage all of us to be better people inside and out.
Bold Bucket List Scholarship
My bucket list is filled with the most randomest things that anyone could ever write. I love the Nancy Drew books and I always wanted to know how to pick a difficult lock. I know that that is a weird thing to put on a bucket list, but its something that I have always wanted to learn. In addition to Nancy Drew, I also wanted to know how to hot wire a modern car, and how to use a paper clip to pick a lock. I also want to learn how to use different types of guns.
The only one that I have been able to acheive so far, is how to pick a lock with a bobby pin. I know its kind of dorky, but I really love that Nancy Drew stuff. There are so many other things on my bucket list that I want to try, but these of some of the most realistic ones. Anyways, I hope you found my bucket list items interesting and somewhat relatable.
Bold Confidence Matters Scholarship
Confidence means feeling comfortable with yourself and who you are as a person. Confidence does not mean being smug or boastful. Confidence is believing in yourself that you are enough and that you don't need validation from other people to know your own worth. I have a problem with confidence. I am not a very confident person and I identify myself as a shy person. I am outgoing with people I know, but when it comes to new people, I am very shy.
The only thing that I am confident in, is who I am as a person and where I belong. I know that I am trustworthy, and I know that I will be the most loyal friend in the whole world. I am confident in my beliefs in God and I am confident of my place in my family. I will work on being more confident through trusting in God's plan and figuring out what I need to do, to do better in this world. That is what confidence means to me and how I hope to acheive it.
Bold Empathy Scholarship
Be a good listener. Lots of people love to talk more than they listen. I am one of those people. I have been called annoying, chatterbox, and loudmouth. I am working on it right now and I am trying to show empathy by truly listening to others and understanding the problems that there are facing. I try to understand how it would feel like to be in their position and respond accordingly. Sometimes I get distracted and I don't truly understand what someone is going through.
Lately, I have been getting better at it, but I still need to do a lot more work. Everyone has heard of the Golden Rule that says, "Treat others how you would like to be treated". As corny as it sounds, it's true. If you treat others without empathy, then they will treat you the same way. I'm trying to be a better person for my family and friends and I want to be that person who will be there for them when they need someone to talk to. Empathy is imagining that you are in the situation of the person experiencing the issue. Empathy is immersing yourself in the idea that you are them. Empathy is responding to them in a way that you would want them to respond if you were in that situation. Showing empathy is not an easy thing, but I try to do that by listening to others.
Bold Relaxation Scholarship
JOURNAL. When I write down my feelings and events of the day, it helps me to reflect on what is most important in life and what I should focus on. When I have a bad day and I write about everything that happened, I realize that there were more good things than there were bad things. I realized that I focused on that ONE bad thing the whole day. When I write in my journal, it helps me relieve the stress and anxiety that I feel and it helps me to understand how special and amazing life is. I want to feel that way every day. So, that is why I love to write in it every night.
I also read almost every night. Reading helps me focus my mind on something calming and good for the mind. Reading has been shown to help one sleep better and feel happier in the morning. Reading helps strengthen your mind and build your vocabulary. I feel that it's important to exercise the brain through reading. Taking care of your mental health is important and you should be doing things that help you take control of your mental health in a positive way.
Bold Hobbies Scholarship
I love writing songs in my free time. I wrote a song for my mom for her birthday and she loved it and it’s kind of like an outlet for me. When I’m writing it feels like I’m just letting go; letting go of reality and immersing myself into something that makes me feel free. I also love to play the violin and piano. I’ve been playing for 13 years and I’m never getting tired of it. Music helps me see things that I don’t get to see in real life. It makes me feel alive and for me it’s not just a hobby, It’s something more. I like to just sit on my bed pull out my composition book and just start writing how I feel and put it into a song. It’s like I’m singing away my problems. I love music and it has helped me get through a lot of moments in my life in which I’ve had doubt for the future. I hope it helps you the same way it helps me.
Bold Self-Care Scholarship
Love yourself. Many generations, especially the younger generations are very insecure about themselves and hate the way they look, talk, walk, or smile. I feel that loving who you are inside and out is the first step to acceptance and living an optimistic life. How can you love others if you can't love yourself? It can be hard to do that. I am one of those people. I have so many things that I hate about myself but I like to say that "Well, I have a feature that no one else has and I like it because it's what makes me, me." If you have that attitude, you will be the happiest person in the world. If everyone all looked the same, the world would be so boring that no one would pay attention to you. Can you even fathom just how unique and beautiful you are? Love yourself, and don't be hard on yourself. Loving yourself is the best self-care advice that I can give you. I love myself and I am happy with who I am. Now it's your turn to do the same.
Bold Growth Mindset Scholarship
I HATED challenges growing up. I saw them metaphorically like trees blocking a road. I see it as something that would hinder me from getting what I want. I would automatically give up knowing that this immense obstacle would, no doubt, stop me from doing what I want. But recently I realized that challenges are there to help you become stronger. Think of it like a resistance band. Challenges produce resistance which will help you develop inner fortitude. It helps you get stronger and stronger until it doesn't feel like a challenge anymore. It is like walking on the treadmil for 20 minutes; the first 10 minutes on the treadmil is unbearable, but once you are 15 minutes in, you build a confidence and determination to finish those 20 minutes of walking. You went from being scared and tired, to feeling stronger and more powerful with the overcoming mindset of " If I can do 10 minutes, I can push to do 10 more." Challenges are what keeps my midset growing. I now welcome it with open arms. So come on and take your best shot, I will get through it all with a badge on my heart telling me that I did it.
Bold Patience Matters Scholarship
HURRY UP!!! For as long as I could remember, I always wanted things done now and to be finished that same second. I was not a very patient person back then; In response to my snide remark, my mom would tell me that " Rome wasn't built in a day, you know." When I start a task I would want it finished that same day, and I guess that helped prevented me from becoming a procrastinator, but I learned that patience is key to being successful. Patience is a key virtue to the growth of human existence. I struggled with being patient and now I Have evolved into becoming a more patient persona and have overcome all of my obstacles and wrong mindsets through patience. Patience has helped bring ou the best in me. SInce I want to pursue something in the medical field, it is very crucial that I understand patience and how only good things can come from it. I feel hopeful for the future and I am ready to be patient for whatever obstacles hinder me and my goals.
Paige's Promise Scholarship
Drugs! Drugs! Drugs! Much of the world is a victim of drugs and have been either hospitalized or deceased. Many people are affected in all parts of the world and it is such a deterimental thing that could be easily prevented. I am an aspiring physician and helping people is a huge passion of mine. I have been orchestrating multiple fundraisers for a very long time. Substance Use Disorder is a big problem that today's society is facing. Over the years the use of substances has increased exponentially. Nowadays, there are teenagers in high school who are vaping, which introduces nicotine into their lungs. There have been many deaths which were the main cause from Substance Abuse. I could see myself educating others about Substance Disorder through teachning them what happens in your body when you put those substances into your body.
I would teach them how it can affect the way you feel, talk, and move. I would teach teenagers that vaping and using drugs may seem to make you feel "cool", but it really doesn't. The negatives outweigh the positives and there is no reason why you should be doing it. I have read multiple stories and have seen multiple pictures of what happens to someone when they start doing drugs. They end up aging twice as fast and the life in the bodies start to dimish slowly. We all know that drugs are bad for you and that the only reason to do them is to feel the high of it. Substance Use is a choice. And with that, we can make the choice to help those stop it and for them to stop doing it on their own terms. Many men and women around the world are affected with this Disorder and it is not uncommon. We can put a stop to this if we teach them the consequences that come along with taking drugs.
I would help people recover through therapeutic measures of letting go of the substance one step at a time. If you stop it abruptly, they will react aggressively, becuase they are additcted to it. I would organize therapeutic sessions and teach them how drastic the effects of drugs can be and how it can be difficult to break away from it. Group therapy will help them open up and see how other people deal with being a drug addict. I would teach them that when life get down, drugs is not the way to go. I would help them focus on the understanding and nature of additction and how becoming drug-free is possible future. I would teach methods that would prevent mental relapse. I am very passionate about helping people and I will not stop helping people. Thank you.
Lillian's & Ruby's Way Scholarship
My name is Jelizza Lupi, I am an aspiring physician and I have been helping people since I was nine years old. Helping people is a huge passion of mine and it always has been ever since I was young. A way in which I would make a positive impact on the world is by helping the homeless.
If we look around Portland today and downtown Portland, we see how the streets and sidewalks are flooded with homeless people and tents and litter and trash. If we can help those people get on the right track in their lives and provide them with the right resources, we can make the world a better place.
Growing up I never knew that helping people means so much to me I’ve been doing it for so long that it just became a part of me. When I was young, even up to now, I began fundraising for the homeless. I would sell miscellaneous crafts and use all that money to buy materials and care packages for them.
There was this one man who I was lucky enough to help, his name is Perri. When I first met him he had cuts and bruises all over his face, but just three years later, he was off the streets and was standing in a parking lot with a truck, and he was all cleaned up. We stayed in touch for a few more years but then he moved on. That will always stay with me for the rest of my life. I am very lucky, to have been given the opportunity to help those around me and I will keep doing it for as long as I can.
With each gift that I was handing out, I knew I was doing something good big or small. So while sharing this journey with you I hope it makes you feel as good as it makes me. Because when people are in sad times lonely times or dark times we could be the light that someone sees at the end of the tunnel. We can’t help everyone but everyone can help someone.
Bold Be You Scholarship
Hello! My name is Jelizza and I like to recapture the day and write about how I felt throughout the day as a way of staying true to myself. I like reflecting on the day and wondering what I could have done or should have done instead and trying to remember that for when I experience something similar to that circumstance again. I like reconnecting to my true self through praying to God and meditating. I try to practice good values every day from lending someone a pencil to helping cure diseases in the future.
I like to write in my diary daily and talk to myself about how my day went and what I need to work on. I try to be genuine with people and not lie to them. I try to be as transparent as I can be and become the best version of myself as I can. Sometimes it is quite difficult because we all have our good and bad days, but I always try my hardest to stay true to myself and not change who I am just to fit in. Because if I do that, I will not be happy on the outside or on the inside. We are all unique and if we all were the same, we would be bored easily. So, embrace who you are and don't change who you are. Stay true to yourself and everything will fall into place.
Bold Memories Scholarship
Hello! My name is Jelizza and I have been exposed to many life-altering experiences. the one that has most influenced my life and has shaped a part of who I am today was when I was 9 years old. My family and I were driving own Stark St during Christmas time and I looked over to see this homeless man who was freezing on the side of the road. I asked my mom " If Santa is real, then why didn't the man wish for a jacket?" and my mom said, " Well, that's why God put you here to help them". I took it very seriously and I was so determined to make it happen that I created multiple fundraisers over the years even up to now. the most recent one I did was this last Christmas. I have helped over +700 people in Portland and have helped them get back on their feet and start a new life. Compassion has been a huge part of my life and giving is something that I have done since I was a child. I plan to use this trait when I enter the medical field in the future.
Bold Love Yourself Scholarship
Hello! My name is Jelizza and I love how determined I am in myself and how I go after what I want. I have worked so hard throughout my high school years and have strived to do the best in all of my classes. I love how studious I am and how I never give up. No matter how many times I have been knocked down I will always find a way to go up because once you reach the bottom, the only way that you can go is up. I have been through many hardships in life and most people would give up or be too overwhelmed with the problem that is staring at them right now, but I like looking at the bigger picture and instead picture it as a temporary thing that will be resolved in a short amount of time.
I am determined to succeed and to do my best. I know that I have God on my side and that with Him, anything I do will be accomplished. I can't wait to see what the future holds for me and I will do my hardest to work hard and to be the best that I can be in life without regrets. thank you so much Bold.org for a chance to apply to such an amazing scholarship. I hope that one day I can make someone feel as determined as I feel right now. God Bless.
Chef John Patrick Thompson Culinary Arts Scholarship
Hello! My name is Jelizza and I have a passion for cooking. Growing up, my parents have influenced and widened my pallet to different arrays of exotic foods around the world. I have always come home to the smell of a home-cooked meal and ever since I was young, I always dreamed of becoming a professional chef. About 4 years ago, my family and I became a plant-based eaters, and although meat tastes really good, I decided to go down a healthier route. I have many recipes up my sleeve that many of my friends and families have loved. I plan to incorporate my knowledge of healthy eating into a culinary career. I hope that one day, I may be able to create the dish that will honor the memory of my grandparents and my mom for all of the cooking and teaching lessons that she gave me over the years.
My mom was born and raised in the Philippines and she was always taught that healthy eating will give you a longer and more prosperous life. I have learned how to make plant-based sushi, lasagna, and Plant-based beef Wellingtons. One of my favorite dishes to make is Risotto. I have learned how long to properly cook the rice and how to make a stunning dish. I have also learned how to make the best plant-based Marinara Spaghetti. The best way that I could make a positive impact on the community is through providing healthy recipes that are good for the body and soul and that will help nourish and not degrade all of the minerals and vitamins in your body. I plan to attend a summer culinary camp in the summertime to help strengthen my talent. I can only hope that someday I will be able to open my own restaurant with my mom and dad. My biggest culinary aspiration in life is to help cure health-related illnesses through my culinary career and to provide the best plant-based alternatives.
Thank you so much for sponsoring this scholarship, Riverhouse Hospitality. I am so glad that I could contribute and be a part of the memory of Chef John Patrick Thompson. I hope that I could become a chef one day and honor my parents for everything they taught me and did for me.
Bold Financial Literacy Scholarship
Hello! My name is Jelizza and my mom always told me that the younger you learn how to save, the better choices you will make in the future financially. At a very young age, I was taught that saving money is better than spending the money you earned right away. She taught me that if you made $10, put $7 away in a savings account, or piggy bank, and imagine that you could only send the leftover of $3. I am 18 now and I have learned how to properly save and spend thanks to my mom. She also taught me that being your own man will get you very far in life and if you can save in the correct way, you will have a bright and successful future. I never forgot that lesson, and I will always remember it for the rest of my life. thank you so much mom for everything you do and everything you taught me. I love you so much. Thank you so much Bold.org for a chance to win this scholarship.

My name is Jelizza Lupi, I am Filipino-American and I am an aspiring physician. I have been helping people since I was nine years old. Helping people is a huge passion of mine and it always has been ever since I was young. A way in which I would make a positive impact on the world it’s through helping the homeless.
If we look around Portland today and downtown Portland, we see how the streets and sidewalks are flooded with homeless people and tents and litter and trash. If we can help those people get on the right track in their lives and provide them with the right resources, we can make the world a better place.
Growing up I never knew that helping people with means so much to me I’ve been doing it for so long that I just became a part of me.
With each gift that I was handing out I knew I was doing something good big or small. So while sharing this journey with you I hope it makes you feel as good as it makes me. Becuase when people are in sad times lonely times or dark times we could be the light that someone sees at the end of the tunnel. We can’t help everyone but everyone can help someone.
So this is a problem that i would want to help solve in the future. The positive impact that I would make on the world is helping people showing them that there is kindness still left in this world despite of all the evil. With your help we can make the world a better place.
Graduate Debt-Free Scholarship
Hello! My name is Jelizza, i am a high school senior and I am an aspiring physician. I have worked very hard throughout my high school years and have done amazingly well in many career-related courses such as Medical Law & Ethics, Anatomy, and Physiology. I am very determined to work hard for what I want and to do well. I come from a family that is not wealthy and I have done numerous side jobs in orde rot help my family make more money. I have created small business that have tried and failed over the years, I have also helped my family in their little shop in Portland, OR. My parents have been working so hard over these last painful years to help put money into my college fund. College debt is something that I don't want my parents to be stuck with, nor I. Another way that I plan on avoiding student debt is to study a bunch of premed courses over the summer, and take an enterence test to opt out of the courses for college and lessen the amount of money that needs to be spent.
College debt is something that I take very seriously and I plan to work part time throughout college and take multiple summer jobs to help my parents pay for college tuition. I plan on saving all of the money I make and put it towards my education. My mom always taught me that saving money at a very young age will help you to become wiser in how and when you spend it. I am very experienced in the work field and I will take as many jobs as I can to help my parents. They gave me the best education that any child could possibly hope for. When we found out that my dad was diagnosed with Stage 2 Kidney cancer last year, we were distraught and my parents had been out of work for about 6 months. Work has been very slow since then, and I can only pray that it will pick up a bit more in the future. This scholarship would help us pay for the textbooks and transportation fees. If I could run up to my parents and show them I won a scholarship it wold take a load off of their backs immensely.
Thank you so much Dr. Thompson for creating this scholarship and for giving me the opportunity to apply. I hope that I can earn enough to help my parents and repay them for everything. God Bless.
Jameela Jamil x I Weigh Scholarship
Hey! My name is Jelizza, and helping people is a huge passion of mine. I was only 9 years old when I set out on my first journey to create my own fundraiser for the homeless. I remeber when my dad was driving down Stark St, I asked my mom, " If santa is real, then why are there homeless people? Couldn't they just ask for what they needed and then they would have it?" My mom then replied saying, " Well, that's why God put you here, to be their santa." I felt to happy that I wanted to make it a reality. Being so young at the time, I was so optimistic that many people would pull out their wallets and help my cause but there weren't that many in the beginning. I posted these paper flyers around Portland that would tell them to come to the shop and buy these cute little cups that contained erasers and candy to support the homeless. In about two weeks I made around $50. I was so thrilled; the first thing that I did was head over to the nearest Dollar store and buy as many canned foods and water as I could find. My parents helped me pack the care packages in brown bags and we set out to Portland to deliver them.
This was the first time that I felt the joy of helping people. Ever since that day I have been doing fundraiser after fundraiser until more than half of those people were off the streets. I am lucky enough to only see their faces once, becuase I know that they are doing better and that they changed the outcome of their life. I am just one person, but if we can all band together and form a line of faith and kindness, we can change the world for the better and help those who are in need, not ignore them. Not only was I helping them, but in return, they were helping me realize that there are good people out there. Good, kind, people that are just waiting for that sign; a sign to pick themselves up and stare life in the face saying, " I can do it, no one can stop me." I realized that there is faith despite of all the darkness that happens around us each and every day. We are stronger together. We can't help everyone, but everyone can help someone.
Bold Giving Scholarship
Giving is something that we have the ability to do. If we constantly take, we will never become truly satisfied with what we have. We will always be wanting more and more. But what most people don't realize, is that when we give back to others, it not only helps them but is also helps us as well. It helps us become better people and it helps to soothe our soul.
Are natural instincts are to help people and to give when people are in need. Yes, we are all guilty of wanting to take something becuase we want it. And we can't blame, because we are only human.
What I like to do to give back to the world is to help the less-fortunate, I have been helping the homeless since I was ten years old and I have helped over +500 homeless people in Portland. I am an aspiring Physician and I want to give back to those people who have helped me, for the rest of my life. Thank you so much for reading this.

Suraj Som Aspiring Educators Scholarship
I believe in Jesus. Yes I am a christian, but that shouldn't be tossed asside, and immediately thown away. Especially the beliefs that we have in science and math. I believe that the relationship between spirituality, science and math, is that they function as a whole together. Spitituality is an understanding that there is something bigger than us. Science and math help us create a sense of the world, and they also help us understand why things are the way that they are. My philosophy is that there is a GOD out there that has created a wold of wonder, and that science and math work coherently to make sense of the painting that GOD has created.
Most of us believe that there is a power higher than ours that is unknown. I am one of those people. Spitituality gives us a sense of being and a sense that something out there loves us and created us in His own image. I undersand that people may not share the same religion as me, but we can all agree that math and science play an immense role in the understanding of the fundamentals of our universe. Math and science have a unique bond with spirituality through how opposing they are. Math and science are based on things that we can prove, and that is real, and that is right in font of our eyes. Spirituality is based on our senses and how we view the world.
It enveopes the ideas of the unimaginable and what we can't physically touch, or prove. To me, the relationship between them, is similar to the likeness of the Yin and Yang. They are very different, but when together they are tgether, they're one. Math and science is the Yin and Spirituality is the Yang. In life we must have a balance and a term in which to capture the feelings that we, humans, feel towards the unknown is spirituality. Most men and women that are a man of science tend to believe in things that they can know through the five senses. As I have stated in my philosophy, I believe that math and science work together with spirituality as one.
If we only had math and science in this world and not spirituality, we could not grow. We could not have mindset of exploring the unknown and the world around us as a whole. We wouldn't think that theree is somthing out there that is higher than us. The word "wonder" wouldn't truly exist, without a sense of spirituality. We can only imagine what is truly ou there. But as I said, the relationship between math, science, and spirituality is that they are one. And like the Yin and Yang, they create a circle. They will always touch at every point, they will always be part of each other. So whenever we arrive to a solution, whether its in the physical or in the intangible, we will always be intertwined with those three understandings.

1. Community means to be weaved together like a blanket. We lean on each other, survive with each other and learn from one another. But like a blanket, if a knot comes untied, you need to mend it in order for the blanket to funtion as a whole. Community means to be open with each other and to always be there for the other party if they need something. Being a community entails trust and honesty. If we want to become a well-grounded community, we need to understand the interests of others and understand people and what they may be going through. My parents used to live in a small community and they would have so many friends and they would do so many fun things together.
Community means to have each others back in times of need or in times of trouble. Being a community or being a part of a community entails a ton of responsability. I would give back to the community through fundraising for homlessness. Ever since I was little I have always had a passion for helping people, and by doing so, it not only helps them but it helps me become a better person as well. One of my favorite quotes is by Seve Maraboli, " A kind gesture can reach a wound that compassion can heal." And with that I would do my best to help the people around me, that is how I would help give back to the community around me.
2. My name is Jelizza Lupi, but I am pretty sure you knew that already:) I have a very ambitious vision of the future. As I have stated in my other paragraph, I have a passion for helping people. Growing up I have set up many fundraisers for helping the homeless people aroun Portland, Oregon. I remember being nine years old, placing a basket of miscellaneous items to sell for $5 each. I remeber collecting the sum of the money I made and going to the store to buy medicine, hats, gloves, and food. I was so excited to give it to them. I think I was more excited about helping them than playing with other kids my age. It made me feel so happy that I didn;t want to stop doing it.
As the years passed, my joy and passion grew stronger. I went from helping 4 homeless people at nine years old to helping over +400 homeless people by the time I was 16. I still do it 2-3 times every year. I just did another fundraiser this last Christmas. I have also begun to sell crocheted items on a little store I made online. And all of the profits I make, go towards a good cause. I have grown so much physically and emotionally. My vision for the future is to help as many epople as I can. Changing one person's life around would make my life worth it. So, that is my vision for the future.
Bold Technology Matters Scholarship
A new technology that i am excited about is AI robotics. I have always been facinated on how they can make arobot do things and connect with people. Believe me, it is a bit nerve-wracking and yes, I sometimes fear that the world could be taken over by freaky robotic machines, but they can also do good for humanity.
Artificial intelligence is shwn all over social medias and in movies as well. I remember watching this one movie with Keanu Reeves. He and his family were in a car crash in which he was the only one who survived. He then decided to clone the rest of his family and program their minds to forget that they were cloned. He was a genius scientist who made AI robotics and was facinated by the idea of creating feelings and emotions.
I am very interested on how they will accomplish this, I am aware that they came out with a few robots already, and the one that they came out with that interests me the most is the robot Sophia. She is such an amazing robot, she can express over 60 human feelings and can move similar to a human being. I know that robotics isn't a brand new technology, but it is fairly new and it interests me so much.
AI robotics can help prevent crimes and can help security cameras as well. In the end the robotic machine can pave a way for better living and a safer environment. Robots can also effectively perform jobs that require competitive tasks. In my opinion I identify AI as an intelligent being that would make human beings obsolete. It is nearly impossible to not be fascinated by robotics. I just find the topic very fascinating because some decades ago no one knew that the world would rely on robots. Who knows what could happen in the near future. I, personally, think that robots will replace human labor in the work force for a little while.
Bold Investing Scholarship
An investing tip that I have taken to heart is if you earn money from either a job, or as a gift from your relatives, always put more than half of it away. Lock it away in a drawer and forget about it. My mom was always so good with money. Even though she worked in a eye-breaking job, by fixing and repairing watches, she would always save her money and invest it in something that is going to help our family. My mom would tell me, " If you earn $10 put the $7 away and you can do whatever you want with the other $3, just forget that you had $10 and spend those $3 however you want." My mom always used that motto and eventually she was able to fully pay off a small house in the Philippines. Never once did I see my mom buy herself branded purses and clothes. SHe always told me that if you spend your money on things like that, your money will eventually be wasted. She told me to invest in either property or jewelry because the price will most likely appreciate than depreciate. Unlike buying cars and clothes, if you try to resell it your money will be wasted. This is such an inspiring way in which I learned how to invest, and I will always remember what my mom told me.

Bold Friendship Matters Scholarship
Friendship means loyalty. Without loyalty you cannot have a true friendship. Friendship means trust. Trust is something that is not given or taken, it is something that is earned. True friendships will last longer depending on those two main factors.
If you can be honest with yourself and with the person that u are friends with then you will have a sustainable friendship that is built on loyalty and trust. Having a friendship is such a powerful thing to have that it helps make you who you are.
I have had many friendships overthrew years and the only one that stuck with me was my relationship with my sister. Our relationship has always been built on trust and loyalty and even though we get into fights we can resolve it as quickly as we got into it.
What friendship means to me is love. If you are going to build a strong friendship with someone, you want to have a loving and kind friendship. Friendship also needs to be understanding. Understanding them and most importantly understanding you and who you are. Before you can have a friendship, you need to know who you are without them before you build something with them.
You need to love yourself first before you can genuinely love another.I take friendship very seriously, I don’t mess around with it. You can’t buy friendship and you most definitely cannot force friendship. If you do the outcome will be so tragic that it will end in bad terms between the both of you.
Bold Science Matters Scholarship
My favorite scientific discovery is electricity. Even though it’s a very simple thing that we think about every day it is a true lifesaver and we are all very dependent on it. Electricity is used all around the world from turning on a lamp by your bedside to powering up millions of buildings worldwide.
Electricity is such a powerful thing that most people don’t even give enough thought into. It’s around us so much that we tend to ignore it or take it for granted. And although it’s such a simple thing it’s something so amazing at the same time.
Understanding electricity not only paved the way for multitudes of technollogical innovations, but it led on to the discovery that our nervous systems’ also communicate through electrical impulses. In general I believe electricity is such an important thing for us and even though we’re widely depending on it it has served a great purpose. A purpose to help provide water, a purpose to provide light in our houses and a purpose to bring about new technological innovations.

Hey! My name is Jelizza. Yeah I know it’s a mouthful and yes it’s a weird name my parents came up with it actually. My name is derived from a bunch of relatives that I have met and some, I have no clue who they are. I’m a senior in high school and I love singing. Even if I may sound like a cat being dragged down the highway. I love romance movies and horror movies I’m a big fanatic of young Leonardo DiCaprio and young Matt Damon. I like playing the piano too. So that’s a pretty quick summary about me, it was nice meeting you.

One technology that inspires me in a way that would make the world a better place are phones. Even though people can become addicted to them they serve as a very important technology in our daily lives. Phones help us communicate with people and to connect with people. Without phones it would be hard, having phones create an outlet for us to express ourselves. Like Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, Snapchat, etc. Phones inspire me to reach out to other people and to understand people. You can tell a lot about someone threw the way they text or the type of pictures that they post on Instagram. Phones can also be like a diary. It can show snapshots of moments that you love throughout your life. For example on my Instagram I like to post of traveling and being with my family. When I look back on my posts I see pictures from 2014 and 2012 and how much I’ve changed since then. So phones for me is an amazing technology that I’ve grown to love and hate at the same time. I believe phones inspire me in this way.
