Bio

I have beat many odds to be where I am and hope to continue to do so. Coming from a low-income household, only having my mom, and being first generation to go to school and in this country I knew I would have to work twice as hard to pursue higher education. I currently hold a Bachelor's degree in Social Work with a minor in Spanish and plan to pursue a Master’s in Public Health at the University of California, Berkeley. My goal is to return to the underserved Central Valley of California where I grew up to reduce health disparities in the Latino community through health promotion and education. By integrating trauma-informed approaches from my social work experience with my public health education, I hope to reach and impact as many people as possible.

    Harvest Achievement Scholarship
As a first-generation college graduate, professional, and proud Mexican-American, my journey has been shaped by resilience, determination, and a commitment to both personal and community growth. Growing up, my mother, a single disabled woman, instilled in me the importance of education as the key to a better life—one free from the struggles she endured. From an early age, I witnessed the realities of navigating life with limited resources and the constant challenge of meeting basic needs. These experiences, rather than holding me back, motivated me to overcome obstacles, proving to myself and others that I would not become another statistic of failure. I am driven by the belief that with persistence, anything is possible. Although my educational journey is not yet complete, as I’ve recently begun my Master’s in Public Health program, I consider myself to have achieved significant success so far. Earning my bachelor’s degree in Social Work with a minor in Spanish was a pivotal accomplishment, made even more meaningful by the challenges I faced along the way. I completed my degree during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, all while acting as a caregiver for my mother. Balancing my responsibilities at home and at school was demanding, but it taught me how to prioritize and persevere in the face of adversity. One of my greatest achievements following my undergraduate education was securing a full-time job as a social worker immediately after graduation. This opportunity was not simply handed to me; it was the result of four years of dedicated volunteer work with the same organization I now work for. Through my volunteer efforts, I demonstrated my passion for helping underserved communities, particularly immigrants, and honed the skills necessary to be effective in my profession. My work ethic, consistency, and the relationships I built over those years played a significant role in securing a job offer before I even graduated. This experience is a testament to my commitment and drive to make a real impact through my work. Recognizing the importance of practical experience, I chose not to apply to graduate school immediately after completing my undergraduate degree. I wanted to first gain real-world experience, develop professionally, and better understand the needs of the communities I serve. This decision reflects my deep commitment to my professional and educational development. It is crucial to me that I enter graduate school prepared to apply what I’ve learned and gain the knowledge necessary to take my impact to the next level. I hold myself accountable by constantly reflecting on the impact my success can have on others. I know that by completing my education and continuing to serve my community, I can inspire not only my young cousins, nieces, and nephews but also future generations. My journey is bigger than myself—it’s about creating a legacy that empowers others to follow their dreams.
    Elevate Mental Health Awareness Scholarship
My struggle with mental health profoundly transformed my career path. At 19, while still undecided about my college major, I began facing significant challenges with my mental health. These experiences ultimately led me to choose Social Work, driven by a desire to understand and help others facing similar issues. Working in social work exposed me to the complexities and interconnectedness of mental health within communities, further deepening my passion for public service. After obtaining my degree and working in the field, I developed a deeper desire to pursue a degree in Public Health. This shift was driven by my observations of health disparities, particularly in rural areas of California's Central Valley, where many people were suffering from untreated mental and physical illnesses. I became increasingly concerned about the lack of resources and initiatives to bridge this gap. I witnessed firsthand the devastating impact of these disparities on individuals and communities, and I felt a strong calling to make a difference. Improving my mental health was a long and arduous journey, requiring years of self-healing and education to discover effective strategies. Through seeking help, I realized my calling in public health. My personal experiences made me acutely aware of the significant impact of physical health on mental well-being. The interconnectedness of physical and mental health creates a cycle that can be difficult to break without proper care and attention. I became convinced that educating the general population about this connection would encourage more people to attend annual checkups, seek medical attention when necessary, and encourage them to advocate for themselves when needed. This fall, I am beginning my Master’s in Public Health with the goal of acquiring the skills needed to serve my underserved community in the Central Valley. Understanding and caring for both mind and body are crucial for overall well-being. My goal is to develop and implement programs that make health education and services accessible to everyone, especially those in rural and underserved areas. Additionally, I aspire to work with students entering the healthcare field. It's vital not only to identify community health issues but also to ensure we have enough professionals to address them. By fostering a supportive environment for students, I hope to motivate them to complete their programs and increase the number of healthcare professionals in the Central Valley and beyond. I plan to create mentorship programs, provide resources for academic and emotional support, and advocate for policies that support the training and retention of healthcare workers in underserved areas. My experiences have taught me that building a robust healthcare system requires a multifaceted approach. It involves addressing systemic issues, providing continuous education, and creating an environment where healthcare professionals can thrive and serve effectively. By working closely with educational institutions, healthcare facilities, and community organizations, I aim to create a sustainable impact that will benefit generations to come. In conclusion, my journey through mental health struggles has not only shaped my career aspirations but has also instilled in me a deep commitment to improving community health. By addressing both mental and physical health needs, educating the public, and supporting future healthcare professionals, I hope to make a lasting impact in the Central Valley and inspire others to prioritize their health and well-being. My vision is to create a community where everyone has access to the resources and support they need to lead healthy, fulfilling lives.

    Priscilla Shireen Luke Scholarship
Growing up, I was inspired by my mother’s consistent acts of kindness and her stories of my grandfather's good deeds. She often spoke about the countless ways he touched people's lives through his selflessness and generosity. This instilled in me a strong desire to help others from a young age, ultimately leading to a career dedicated to service. Witnessing my mother’s and grandfather’s compassion firsthand, I developed a deep commitment to giving back through my involvement in nonprofit and human rights endeavors. Currently, I serve as a dedicated social worker within a nonprofit organization, where I passionately support unaccompanied minors in their transition to life in the United States. My role involves not only assisting them in accessing vital resources, such as healthcare, education, and legal support, but also advocating for them in different settings. Whether it's accompanying them to medical appointments, helping them enroll in school, or ensuring they understand their legal rights, I strive to be a reliable and steadfast advocate for these vulnerable children. My journey in this field began well before my official employment. During my undergraduate studies, I volunteered as an interpreter for four years. This experience was transformative, as it allowed me to bridge the communication gap between the children and pro bono attorneys, fostering a deeper connection to the cause. I decided to begin volunteering for the organization I currently work for because I knew I wanted to do something to help the humanitarian crisis at the border. As a student from a low-income background, I knew I wouldn’t be able to assist monetarily. However, when the opportunity to donate my time and skills arose, I seized it without hesitation. Volunteering provided me with invaluable insights into the struggles these children face and affirmed my belief that while financial support is crucial, the gift of time and skills can be equally impactful. Driven by a desire to make a tangible difference, I am now embarking on a new chapter in my academic journey by pursuing a Master's in Public Health at the University of California, Berkeley. My goal is to address the pressing health disparities prevalent in the Central Valley of California, thereby furthering my commitment to serving marginalized communities. Through this advanced degree, I aim to gain the knowledge and skills necessary to develop and implement effective public health strategies that can improve the lives of those who are often overlooked and underserved. This scholarship opportunity is incredibly important to me as it will alleviate the financial burden of paying for school, allowing me to put more of my focus and energy on my studies. By reducing the stress associated with financial constraints, I can dedicate myself fully to my academic pursuits and professional development. Ultimately, this will enable me to amplify my impact and contribute meaningfully to the betterment of society. With the support of this scholarship, I am confident that I can make significant strides in addressing health disparities and advocating for those who need it most.
