Bio

I’m Jay, a dedicated and aspiring PA student deeply committed to mentorship, medicine, and mindfulness. Through my journey from MA to PA student, I have discovered a profound passion for guiding and empowering others on their own paths to success. My passion for medicine was ignited through an accumulation of clinical experiences working as an MA. I eagerly anticipate the opportunity to explore my specific clinical interests, fully aware that they will evolve as I gain invaluable hands-on experience as a PA student. With an unwavering drive for continuous growth, I aspire to pursue a doctorate degree, building upon the solid foundation established through my Master of Science in Physician Assistant Medicine program. When I'm not immersed in my academic pursuits, I find solace in various creative and physical endeavors. Capturing stories through videography has become a true passion of mine, allowing me to express myself and connect with others on a visual level. Additionally, my dedication to personal well-being extends to my local gym, where I devote time to regular workouts, fostering discipline and resilience. I am also a firm believer in the power of great skin care empowering us to look and feel great. I recently launched a YouTube channel called @TheTallPA. Through this platform, I document my personal journey, capturing the transformative process from a pre-PA student to a fully licensed and practicing PA. It is my utmost desire to inspire and motivate future generations of PAs, empowering them to unlock their potential and embark on their own fulfilling journeys.

    Henry Bynum, Jr. Memorial Scholarship
Exposure to trials and triumphs in my life has relentlessly molded me into being a better human. By the age of eighteen, I had attended ten different schools, met thirteen of my now seventeen younger siblings, battled with homelessness, and became the first in my family to gain admission into college. As I continue to encounter people along my life journey, there lay a yearning to establish emotional connections with others beyond surface-level conversations. While in college, I sought to find an area of study that allowed me to bring this deep interest in interconnectedness to life. Delving deep into advanced science courses made me feel more encouraged in my ability to master intricate concepts, and I soon recognized a sense of fulfillment in helping others through guidance and explanation. I strongly desire to help my community in the future by pursuing a career as a physician assistant (PA) as it allows me to combine my urge to understand people profoundly and challenge myself in a lifetime of learning. The versatility that PAs have to navigate through various domains of medicine, affording them opportunities to reach an array of populations, motivates me more to want to practice medicine as a PA. Among the many factors that continue to drive me toward the PA profession, my interactions with PAs and patients while working as a medical assistant (MA) coupled with my diverse life experiences have been the most influential. As I commence this new phase of my life, I aspire to enhance the diversity of the PA workforce by utilizing my clinical expertise, personal challenges, and unwavering dedication to providing exceptional patient care in every interaction. In my clinical experience, I have witnessed many circumstances in which the healthcare system burdens members of marginalized communities for various reasons, whether it be a language barrier, lack of healthcare insurance or a lost sense of personalized human connection. Coming from an underrepresented background in medicine, I bear the cultural humility and life experience to become a PA with a unique perspective, who can also identify and speak out on systemic inequalities and prejudicial practices. In my view, it is crucial for there to be a greater number of healthcare providers who can identify with and mirror the diverse patient population. Through my education in PA school, I will be able to gain a deeper understanding of the healthcare system and the issues that exist within it. I will learn about healthcare disparities, cultural competence, and patient advocacy, which will help me better serve the diverse populations that I hope to work with. I have worked hard for years to be the first in my family to become a medical provider, and I desire to serve diverse populations and those who have faced similar hurdles in their lives. As a first-generation student, there were tough times and specifically, I can recall struggling both emotionally and financially throughout my undergraduate career, which has impacted my academic performance. However, over the last seven years, I have continued to challenge and develop myself academically by taking more rigorous science courses at larger course loads than many of my peers, all while working full-time and caring for patients. My experience in patient care and the wisdom I have accrued through my challenging upbringing has significantly contributed to my critical thinking, empathy, and continued pursuit to make a lasting impact on the healthcare system. Driven by compassion, the opportunity to serve as a physician assistant would allow me to play an integral role in patient care by guiding, educating, and aiding patients during trying times in their lives.
    Headbang For Science
As a future physician assistant (PA), I am committed to making a positive impact on the healthcare system and improving the lives of those in underserved communities. My experiences growing up in a large family, attending ten different schools, and facing homelessness have instilled in me a deep empathy for those who have struggled and a desire to serve as a beacon of hope for those who face similar challenges. From a young age, I learned the importance of community and the value of human connections. As the eldest of my siblings, I have always felt a strong sense of responsibility to provide guidance and support to those around me. I also recognize the immense power of emotional connections and the role they play in establishing trust, which is particularly important in the context of healthcare. In college, I discovered my passion for science and the power of education to empower and enlighten. I was particularly drawn to advanced science courses, which challenged me to master intricate concepts and I also found that I enjoyed explaining these concepts to others and helping them to better understand the science behind their condition. My experience working as a medical assistant gave me firsthand exposure to the healthcare system and the challenges that patients face in accessing care. I saw how language barriers, lack of personalized care, and other factors could create obstacles for patients seeking treatment. I also recognized the importance of cultural humility and the need for healthcare providers to understand and appreciate the diverse backgrounds and experiences of each of their patients. These experiences have all contributed to my desire to practice medicine as a PA. I see this role as the perfect opportunity to combine my love of science, my desire to help others and my commitment to service. I plan to practice medicine in either family medicine or a critical care subspecialty. Both specialties appeal to me because of the opportunity they offer to serve communities that may not have access to quality healthcare. In family medicine, I could work with patients of all ages and provide comprehensive care to entire families. In a critical care subspecialty, I could work in a fast-paced, high-stress environment where quick thinking and rapid response are essential. The critical care subspecialty also provides an opportunity for me to serve the community by responding to medical emergencies that require specialized care, such as trauma or cardiac arrests. In such situations, every second counts, and having a well-trained critical care PA on the team could make a significant difference in patient outcomes. Regardless of the specific specialty I choose, I am committed to making a positive impact on the healthcare system and improving the lives of those I serve. I am passionate about reducing health disparities and providing access to quality care for all. I believe that my unique background and life experiences have equipped me with the tools I need to succeed as a PA and to make a meaningful difference in the lives of others, and receiving the Headbang for Science Scholarship would be beneficial in offsetting the financial burden of reaching my goals. As a PA student, my days are jam-packed with studying, dissecting cadavers, and other Herculean tasks that are par for the course in the world of clinical medicine. With such an overwhelming workload and my current piling student loan debt, it's no wonder that I feel like I'm drowning in stress and anxiety. But fear not, for I have discovered the ultimate remedy for these woes: heavy metal music! Its electrifying rhythms, heart-pumping lyrics, and blazing guitar solos have the power to ignite my inner fire and fuel me with the strength to keep going. Whether I'm crushing it at the gym or hunched over a textbook, heavy metal is my trusty sidekick, reminding me that I have what it takes to conquer the challenges that lie ahead. So, daily, I blast the volume, unleash fury, and let metal gods guide me to triumph!

RE: My Apology and Encouragement: A Letter from Your Late Aunt My Dear Nephew Jaylin, From the vantage point of heaven, I see the impact of my actions on those I left behind. I see the sadness in your eyes, the tears you shed, and the pain you feel. I see the hurt and confusion that my death caused, and I wish that I could take it all away. I know that my you loved me and did everything you could to support me. You saw the signs of my struggles and you strongly urged me come to you when I was feeling low. You tried to convince me to seek help and take my medication, but I was in denial about my illness and that is not your fault. I convinced myself that I didn't need the medication, that I could manage on my own. But I was wrong. My battle with depression and bipolar disorder was long and difficult. It was like being in a constant state of darkness, where even the smallest tasks felt overwhelming. It was a battle that I fought alone, without the help I desperately needed. And when I finally reached my breaking point, it was too late, and for that I am sorry. I never wanted to hurt you, but the sense of helplessness I felt was relentlessly debilitating. I thought that my death would be a relief for everyone, that they would be better off without me. But now, as I look down on them from heaven, I realize how wrong I was. You are not better off without me. If only I had sought help, if only I had taken my medication, maybe things would have been different. Maybe I could have lived a happier, more fulfilling life. Maybe I could have been there for you, to watch you grow up to become a hardworking first-generation student, determined to succeed and make a difference in the world. I was so proud when you graduated from college and announced your plans to become a physician assistant (PA). Knowing that you would be working in the medical field, helping those in need, brought me comfort in my final days. Through your career goals, my nephew, you will be able to provide care and support to people like me, who are battling with a mental illness that can be hard to understand and even harder to manage. I have no doubt that you will be a compassionate and knowledgeable PA, providing hope and help to those who are suffering in silence as I once did. As I look down on you from above, I am filled with admiration. Your dedication to helping others is a testament to the values and beliefs that our family has always held dear. I know that you will make a positive impact on the world, and I am honored to have been a part of your life. Remember, mental illness is a serious issue that affects millions of people around the world. It is important to seek help and support if you are struggling, and to never give up hope. You have the power to make a difference in the lives of those around you, and I am so proud of the person you have become. I will always be watching over you, and I know that you will continue to make me proud. Mind, Body, & Soul Scholarship
As a physician assistant (PA) student, the opportunity to study medicine is not just an academic endeavor, but a path towards my dream of becoming a healthcare provider who can make a positive impact on people's lives. The prospect of gaining practical skills, knowledge, and experience to help others as a PA is truly exhilarating. However, I am aware that the journey towards becoming a PA is no walk in the park. There will be challenges and obstacles that I need to overcome, both mentally and physically, to succeed in this rigorous program. One of the things that excites me the most about studying medicine as a PA student is the opportunity to learn from experienced healthcare professionals. As a PA student, I will have the chance to work alongside physicians, nurses, and other healthcare providers to learn from their experiences and expertise. I will be exposed to a diverse range of medical cases, from routine check-ups to complex surgeries, which will help me build my clinical skills and prepare me for real-world situations. The hands-on experience I will gain in PA school will help me become a well-rounded healthcare provider, with the knowledge and skills to provide the best possible care to my patients. Furthermore, the collaborative nature of the PA profession is another aspect that excites me. PAs work closely with physicians and other healthcare providers, allowing for a team-based approach to patient care. This not only enhances the quality of care but also enables PAs to learn from their colleagues and share their knowledge and experiences. However, being a PA student is not easy, and the academic demands of the program can be overwhelming. To maintain a healthy mind, body, and soul amidst the challenges faced in PA school, I plan to adopt various strategies. Firstly, I will establish a daily routine that prioritizes my mental and physical health. This will include regular exercise, healthy eating habits, and adequate sleep, which are essential for optimal performance and stress management. Moreover, I plan to cultivate a positive mindset and seek support when needed. PA school can be daunting, and it is essential to acknowledge that it is okay to ask for help. I will surround myself with a supportive network of friends, family, and classmates who can offer encouragement, advice, and motivation. I will also make use of the resources available to me, such as counseling services, academic support, and mentorship programs. Additionally, I will strive to maintain a work-life balance by engaging in activities that bring me joy and relaxation. This can be anything from reading a book, cooking, hiking, or spending time with loved ones. By taking breaks from the demands of PA school, I can recharge my energy and refocus on my studies with renewed vigor. In conclusion, the opportunity to study medicine as a PA student is an exciting prospect, but it also comes with its own set of challenges. To succeed in PA school, I plan to adopt various strategies to maintain a healthy mind, body, and soul. By prioritizing my well-being and seeking support when needed, I can overcome the challenges of the program and become a competent and compassionate healthcare provider. The journey towards becoming a PA may be arduous, but it is a path worth taking to fulfill my dream of making a positive impact on people's lives.
    Your Health Journey Scholarship
As a former athlete, I have always been interested in health and wellness, but it wasn't until I went to college that I realized just how easy it is to fall into unhealthy habits. Late nights studying for exams, dining hall food that was more "convenient" than nutritious, and the temptation of the college party scene all contributed to some less-than-ideal choices. However, I made a conscious effort to prioritize my health, and it was then that I began to see the benefits. I understand that promoting a healthy lifestyle during college years is essential as it helps set the foundation for a lifetime of healthy habits. As we age, our bodies go through changes that make it more difficult to maintain good health. By establishing healthy habits early in life, we can set ourselves up for a better chance of avoiding issues down the road. So, here are some practical tips that helped me promote a healthy lifestyle during college years: Firstly, make time for exercise. Regular exercise is crucial for maintaining good health, and it has numerous mental health benefits. Exercise can help reduce stress, improve mood, and boost cognitive function. As a physician assistant student, I make sure to prioritize exercise by scheduling it into my daily routine. Secondly, plan ahead for meals. Grabbing a quick bite from a nearby fast-food joint can be tempting, but these options are often lacking in nutrients and high in calories. By planning ahead and preparing healthy meals and snacks, we can ensure that we're fueling our bodies with the nutrients they need to function at their best. Thirdly, get enough sleep. Late nights studying or partying can wreak havoc on our sleep schedules, but getting enough rest is crucial for our overall health. Sleep helps our bodies repair and regenerate, and it also plays a role in regulating hormones and metabolism. As a student, I make sure to prioritize sleep by setting a consistent bedtime and avoiding screens for at least an hour before going to bed. Lastly, stay hydrated. Drinking enough water is essential for maintaining good health. It helps regulate body temperature, aids in digestion, and supports healthy skin. As a student, I always make sure to have a water bottle on hand and aim to drink at least eight cups of water a day. Moreover, it's important to note that promoting mental health is also an essential part of a healthy lifestyle, and it's crucial that college students and others prioritize it. Personally, I establish a daily self-care routine, which might include activities like meditation, journaling, or spending time in nature. Building a support system is another important way to promote mental health. This might mean connecting with friends or family members who are supportive and understanding, joining a club or group that aligns with your interests, or seeking professional support from a therapist or counselor. As a healthcare provider, I believe that it's important to lead by example when it comes to promoting a balanced healthy lifestyle. I make sure to encourage my patients to prioritize their health by emphasizing the importance of healthy habits, such as regular exercise, a nutritious diet, and getting enough rest, and provide resources to help them achieve their goals. Additionally, I practice what I preach by prioritizing my own health and well-being, which includes making time for exercise, preparing healthy meals, and getting enough sleep. By practicing what I preach and promoting a balanced healthy lifestyle, I hope to inspire others to do the same.

My experience volunteering with vulnerable populations, demonstrates my commitment to the field and my ability to excel in a challenging and demanding environment. Additionally, I am a first-generation college student and I come from a low-income background, so my family is unable to provide the financial support necessary to cover the cost of my education. This scholarship would help to alleviate a portion of already accrued debt and current cost of tution, allowing me to focus on my studies, rather than worrying about how I will pay for my medical education. Upon graduation, I plan to work in underserved areas and provide care to those who lack access to quality healthcare.

Exposure to trials and triumphs in my life has relentlessly molded me into being a better human. By the age of eighteen, I had attended ten different schools, met thirteen of my now seventeen younger siblings, battled with homelessness, and became the first in my family to gain admission into college. As I continue to encounter people along my journey, there lay a yearning to establish emotional connections with them beyond surface-level conversations. While in college, I sought to find an area of study that allowed me to bring this deep interest in interconnectedness to life. Delving deep into advanced science courses made me feel more encouraged in my ability to master intricate concepts, and I soon recognized a sense of satisfaction in helping others through explaining. I strongly desire to pursue a career as a physician assistant (PA) as it allows me to combine my urge to understand people profoundly and challenge myself in a lifetime of learning. The versatility that PAs have to navigate through various domains of medicine, affording them opportunities to reach an array of populations, motivates me more to want to practice medicine as a PA versus other health professions. There have been semesters where I struggled both emotionally and financially throughout my undergraduate career, which has impacted my academic performance. However, over the last seven years, I have continued to challenge and develop myself academically by taking more rigorous science courses at larger course loads than many of my peers, all while working full-time and caring for patients. My experience in patient care and the wisdom I have accrued through my challenging upbringing have significantly contributed to my critical thinking, empathy, and continued pursuit to make a lasting impact on the healthcare system. Driven by compassion, the opportunity to serve as a physician assistant would allow me to play an integral role in patient care by guiding, educating, and aiding patients during trying times in their lives.
