Sheniqua Bisor Woman of Excellence Scholarship
As a woman of excellence, my social identities and lived experiences have profoundly shaped my journey and pursuit of a career in criminal defense law. Growing up in a single parent house hold, I was immersed in diverse perspectives and learned the value of empathy, understanding, and inclusivity. This upbringing instilled in me a deep respect for cultural heritage and the importance of advocating for equity and justice.
My identity as a Black woman has also played a pivotal role in shaping my worldview and career aspirations. Witnessing the systemic injustices faced by marginalized communities has fueled my passion for social justice and inspired me to become a voice for the voiceless. My socio-economic background, rooted in a humble upbringing, has taught me resilience, perseverance, and the power of education as a tool for upward mobility.
My family, particularly my grandfather, who tragically passed away in a car accident, has been a significant influence in my life. He taught me valuable life lessons, from teaching me to drive to sharing wisdom over breakfast. His absence has fueled my drive to succeed and make him proud, even in his absence. My experiences working at a food pantry and volunteering in my community have further reinforced my commitment to serving others and addressing issues of food insecurity and poverty.
Upon graduating from college, I plan to pursue a career as a criminal defense attorney, specializing in advocating for marginalized communities and ensuring fair and just legal representation for all. My goal is to use my platform to address systemic inequalities within the criminal justice system and advocate for meaningful reform.
Over the past two years, I have been actively involved in volunteer, community service, and leadership experiences that have shaped my perspective and enriched my understanding of social issues. As a member of the Multicultural Association of Business Students and the Black Student Alliance Council, I have worked to promote diversity, equity, and inclusion on campus. I have also volunteered at a local food pantry, where I have witnessed firsthand the impact of food insecurity on individuals and families.
One of my greatest accomplishments to date has been my involvement in Roundtable Talk, where I serve as the Vice President of Collaboration. In this role, I have organized and facilitated discussions on important social issues, bringing together students from diverse backgrounds to engage in meaningful dialogue and promote understanding. This experience has taught me the importance of listening, empathy, and collaboration in creating positive change.
In conclusion, my journey as a woman of excellence has been shaped by my social identities, lived experiences, and commitment to serving others. I am dedicated to using my voice and platform to advocate for justice and equality, both in my career and in my community.

One of my very first childhood memories is of my grandfather taking me to the local park and going to the jungle gym with me. Like most children, I was very adventurous and wanted to challenge myself by climbing the monkey bars. Given how small I was at the time, this challenge seemed impossible to conquer. At one point, I stopped because I was scared, but my grandfather encouraged me to keep going. He made me believe that I had the strength to keep going and that my fear was all in my head. He then guided me, being there by my side the entire time to make sure that I did not fall. Once I made it across the monkey bars, I could see the glow on his face and he told me how proud he was that I completed something that I was scared to do. Although it may seem like a small gesture, at that moment I knew I could come to my grandfather for any support I may need in the future.
My grandfather has always been someone I can go to, regardless of the circumstances. Our relationship dynamic has positively impacted my life in a major way. He never judges, always has advice, and is the most supportive person I know. Any idea or aspirations that I’ve ever had, he was right there telling me that the sky was the limit. I truly believe he is the reason that I am not afraid to chase my dreams of becoming a criminal defense lawyer.
Growing up, he made it a point to remind me to give back to my community because they were the people that shaped me into who I am today. Listening to his advice made me realize that the African American community is lacking legal help and resources for people who may not be able to afford it. I wanted to own a law firm that caters to the African American community and gives them a space to come to for legal help. This is a grand ambition and, although it may seem scary, I know that I will always have support from my grandfather. I am grateful for all the things my grandfather has taught and done for me and I hope he sees all the accomplishments I do in his honor. Having this moment with a family member that is so close to my heart shows me why family is such an important part of my life. Not only do they build you up, but they also push you to be someone that is destined for greatness.

Within the four years of high school, many students face difficult obstacles and unique opportunities that will challenge their growth as students and individuals. Like many students, I also had many obstacles during my years of high school. I, however, faced and overcame the challenge of being over-committed, disorganized, and overwhelmed. I am proud to say that I have learned to balance my academic tasks, extracurricular activities, and a part-time job in such a way that will benefit me in the future. After my experience in junior year, I learned valuable lessons about prioritization, organization, and time management. I plan to bring these important lessons with me in college, to help me achieve growth and contribute positively as well.
Interestingly, I had not struggled academically until my junior year of high school. As a 3.7 grade point average student taking dual credit classes, Parliamentarian of the Student Council, an athlete, active in several other extracurricular activities, and working, I had a lot of responsibilities. However, suddenly, I began to feel unprepared, flooded with uncertainty, and lacking confidence; this was very off-putting to me. I was accustomed to excellence and accolades, but things had taken a turn unexpectedly. This change caused me great stress, affecting my mental health, grades, relationships, and eating habits. Unfortunately, I remember my frustration showing up in my personal life with unhealthy food habits and declining communication in my relationships.
After noticing this stress was taking a toll on my life, I realized I needed a change. I decided that I needed to start utilizing a planner, having downtime, and asking for help so my schedule could feel manageable and I could feel at ease. Having downtime is something I struggled with when I was younger and up until recently. I was conditioned to believe that if I was not moving constantly, I was wasting my life and being lazy. I had to realize that being over-committed and having a packed schedule was not good for my body or mind.
I’ve learned to prioritize self-care just as I prioritize my other tasks. I am proud that I have changed my work habits and created a lifestyle that I can maintain now and throughout college. Overcoming this challenge has helped me realize the importance of giving myself grace while achieving academically. It showed me that I can grow as a student and a person at the same time, without them conflicting with one another. As a college student, I hope to apply what I’ve learned in high school by joining and enjoying the different extracurricular activities and programs that the university offers while continuing to excel academically.
Everyone faces obstacles, especially in the major growing points of their life. High school comes with many obstacles, and being unorganized and overwhelmed was mine. By conquering this challenge early on, I will benefit the university positively by succeeding academically by using the services available to me and contributing positively to organizations while still having mindfulness of my well-being. I am proud to say that I am capable of handling my responsibilities while taking time for myself. I will take everything I learned and put it toward my future education and career. Being able to do these things every day proves to me that if I set my mind to something, I can accomplish anything.

A common phrase that everyone is told growing up is that you can put anything you put your mind to or that the sky's the limit, only this is true only to specific individuals. Not everyone is allowed to show what they can do because of the circumstances they were put into unwillingly. The optimism that is given to children can be taken away from them because of the way the government is set up in the country they live in. In the country of America, children of color are oftentimes put into unfair disadvantages because of their parent's finances, the education they were given, or the skin they were born with.
Although these are things that sometimes can not be solved, these children often face adversity and discrimination because they are considered less than and not equal to their peers around them. Some of the children in these situations are put there because the justice system did not protect them as it was supposed to. The parents of these kids are often arrested or deported for small things that had a big impact on their lives. By removing parents from the household, you are stopping income that is earned in the house or you are placing the child in foster care or with a family member that is not equipped to take care of the child. The child sometimes is put into a toxic situation that could hinder the potential they have to change the world. Although the issue at hand is something that has been going on for decades, I plan to make a positive change in my way. I want to open my law firm to help families who may seek legal advice but do not have the financial means to do so.
Oftentimes people of color are incarcerated for longer periods than others or for crimes they didn’t commit at all due to the unfair justice system. I want to become a criminal defense lawyer and help fight for justice to be given fairly. Lawyers can be expensive and not everyone has the funds to take care of a house and afford one. My law firm will encourage any and everyone to come and get support to fight for their families. I will use my business degree to advertise and help navigate the finances of the firm. I want the children of this country no matter what circumstances to have equal opportunity to become something great in the world. By opening up my law firm I can have a hand in that by fighting the justice system that some things hold those dreams back.

As a 3.7-grade point average student taking dual credit classes, Parliamentarian of Student Council, an athlete, active in several other extracurricular activities, and working, I had a lot of responsibilities.
I decided to start utilizing a planner, having downtime, and asking for help so my schedule could feel manageable and I could feel at ease. Having rest is something I struggled with when I was younger and up until recently.

A person's community helps mold them into what kind of person they will be. What kind of food they like, how they interact with the world, and their work ethic can be things that their community gives them. For this reason, residents of the community should try their best to put it back in so their environment can thrive. I believe the most important way a person conservator community is just by simply showing up. Whether that’s planning for productions or volunteering an hour of their time, participation is key to giving back. A great way that an individual can give back to their community is by planning things so the community can come together to start coming together to celebrate different things. Many people have different accomplishments in this community and they deserve to be celebrated or communities can come together because they are a community and they are family. These events could be hosted at the local YMCA ,schools, or if it’s a small event it could even be hosted in your backyard! Another way that someone can serve their community is by simply starting to support each other more. Many people are starting businesses and deserve to have recognition from their fellow neighbors. Individuals can help business owners put up things like posters and signs together. They could also promote it on their social media pages, this is quick and simple but it’s still effective. The last thing an individual can do to help serve the community is by overseeing the youth's better opportunities for education. If a person has lived in a community their entire lives there most likely went to school in that community. Therefore, that person knows what kind of education barriers they faced and knows how to approach the problems. Getting kids the resources they need to learn is very important because they are the ones that will upkeep the community in the future. Volunteering at a local elementary and middle school makes a world of a difference. Things like hosting blood drives, canned food drives, and clothing donations are all wonderful ways of volunteering in their community. Getting involved in Churches, homeless shelters, and The local YMCA are also great alternatives to getting involved in your community. I have spent time reading to children and helping them with their homework. Seeing the smiles on their faces makes a world of a difference and I love to do it. I also plan to start a club that will allow seniors to go speak to kindergartners and up about their experiences because it could be beneficial to them. I have also given blood drives, hosted canned food drives, and hosted Halloween events at my high school. I’ve been to numerous school events including art shows, award ceremonies, and black history events. I’m a student council officer so I’m always brainstorming new ideas on how I can improve my community. I have lived in my community since I was three years old and I truly believe it’s helped me become the hard-working person that I am.

A common phrase that everyone is told growing up is that you can put anything you put your mind to or that the sky's the limit; however, this only applies to specific individuals. Not everyone is allowed to show what they can do because of the circumstances they were put into unwillingly. The optimism that is given to children can be taken away from them because of the way the government is set up in the country they live in. In America, children of color are oftentimes put into unfair disadvantages because of their parents’ finances, the education they were given or the skin color they were born with.
Although the issue at hand is something that has been going on for decades, I plan to make a positive change in my own way. I want to open a law firm to help families who may seek legal advice but do not have the financial means to do so.
Often, people of color are incarcerated for longer periods than others or for crimes they didn’t commit due to the unfair justice system. I want the children of this country, no matter what circumstances, to have equal opportunity to become something great in life. By opening up my law firm I can have a hand in that by fighting the justice system that some things hold those dreams back. Before this dream becomes a reality, there are a few things I need to accomplish before then. I feel as though it’s important for me to go to college and give back to my community because it’s given so much to me, however who will give to them if not the people that’s in it. One of those things is going to undergrad to earn my business marketing degree. With achieving this scholarship it could help me get one step closer to accomplishing this dream.

Being a leader varies from person to person and it’s something that I did not understand for a long time. I was graciously given the opportunity to step into a leadership role that will give me beneficial skills that I can use throughout my life . Once I was elected parliamentarian for the student council, I soon took on the rule of a true leader in a way that I never had before. From taking on this role, I learned that leadership means having a passion to serve and guide others with integrity, selflessness, and confidence. All of these skills give me passion to continue to help and guide others to create something bigger than us . I've had to display these qualities in many ways once I became a student council officer and I now use these qualities in my everyday life outside of being an officer. I think that it's very important to learn these skills set in an extracurricular activity like this because it gives me an opportunity to grow as a person while helping people around me blossom as well. I have experienced so many different opportunities to showcase the different qualities I have that make me a leader.
For example, planning the biggest school events of the year like a homecoming, or continuing to work when my plans aren’t going so well. These setbacks oftentimes make others want to quit or give up because of the difficulties of the situation. However, I acknowledge the setbacks and I took initiative to make sure that we had things to fall back on if things didn’t go as planned. A leader also has to work well with a team and understand their group's mindset. It’s important to learn these skills as a teenager but these skills carry into my adult life . I have learned how to work with a sort of different mindsets and personalities because I am a representation of my student body and it’s important that they are heard in a positive light . I had to be able to listen to my peers' ideas even if I think it was not great or that things could be done in a better way.
Compromising and adjusting is a big part of being a leader and it’s something I can say that I struggled with at first but I can confidently say I have mastered those skills . The things that I learned in high school will help me with my career because it will teach me that working with others can lead to a greater outcome. I want to own my own law firm and help others who may not be able to afford legal help. My team of lawyers and I will come together to assist those clients who need help fighting for justice.

Unfortunately, I remember my frustration showing up in my personal life with unhealthy food habits and declining communication in my relationships.
After noticing this stress was taking a toll on my life, I realized I needed a change. I decided to start utilizing a planner, having downtime, and asking for help so my schedule could feel manageable and I could feel at ease. Having rest is something I struggled with when I was younger and up until recently.

Being able to do these things every day proves to me that if I set my mind to something, I can accomplish anything.

As a black woman, seeing other black women own and operate their businesses has always been so aspiring. I strive to do bigger and better things as my role models before me, not only for myself but for others that look like me. I want younger girls that surround me in my community to see that we are capable of doing great things in the world no matter what is going on around us. I want to show young black girls not only can they accomplish their dreams, but they can also create generational well for themselves. Creating generational wealth is often neglected in my community, but this is something I found to be important. With this being said, I took it upon myself to begin researching what exactly generational wealth is in how to achieve it. Getting an undergrad degree in the business field is one of my many goals for myself. I’ve always found business interesting and something that can apply to everyday life. Getting this degree opens doors for the many companies I plan to have in the future. Obtaining the degree will help me understand what I need to know about the business world and how to maintain and run a successful business. After I graduate, I want to begin law school and get my Juris doctorate. Once I become a lawyer, I plan to begin an aesthetician school shortly after. I’ve always had a dream to go to an Aesthetician school because growing up I did not have the highest self-esteem. I didn't know how to properly take care of my skin and it took a toll on my self-confidence. The reason why I want to go to an aesthetician school it’s because I want to learn different spa treatments so I can open my spa. In the spa, I will also offer free classes to young girls about how to paint their nails, skincare and so much more. This way I can use my business degree to help girls with their self-esteem because at that age I would have loved it. After I’m done with aesthetician school, I want to begin practicing law. I specifically want to do criminal justice work with people wrongly convicted of crimes. Unfortunately, it’s a common thing that happens in the black community. African-Americans face inequality on a day-to-day basis in the justice system. I want to open up my practice that specifically caters to getting African-American people the help they need. I would also like to offer free legal advice to people who cannot afford it. When I open up this practice, I’ll be using my business degree as well as my Juris doctorate. Helping people, inspiring children, and gaining generational wealth are what inspire me to get a degree in business.

I, however, faced and overcame the challenge of being over-committed, disorganized, and overwhelmed. I am proud to say that I have learned to balance my academic tasks, extracurricular activities, and a part-time job in such a way that will benefit me in the future. After my experience junior year, I have learned valuable lessons about prioritization, organization, and time management. I plan to bring these important lessons with me in college, to help me achieve growth and contribute positively to my chosen institution as well.
Interestingly, I had not struggled academically until my junior year of high school. As a 3.7-grade point average student taking dual credit classes, Parliamentarian of Student Council, an athlete, active in several other extracurricular activities, and working, I had a lot of responsibilities. However, suddenly, I began to feel unprepared, flooded with uncertainty, and lacking confidence; this was very off-putting to me. I was accustomed to excellence and accolades, but things had taken a turn unexpectedly. This change caused me great stress, affecting my mental health, grades, relationships, and even my eating habits.
Overcoming this challenge has helped me realize the importance of giving myself grace while achieving academically. With this being said, I took it upon myself to begin researching what exactly generational wealth is in how to achieve it. Getting an undergrad degree in the business field is one of my many goals for myself. I’ve always found business interesting and something that can apply to everyday life. Getting this degree opens doors for the many businesses I plan to have in the future. Obtaining the degree will help me understand what I need to know about the business world and how to maintain and run a successful business. After I graduate, I want to begin law school and get my Juris doctorate. Once I become a lawyer, I plan to begin aesthetician school shortly after. I’ve always had a dream to go to an Aesthetician school because growing up I did not have the highest self-esteem. I don’t know how to properly take care of my skin and it took a toll on my self-confidence. The reason why I want to go to aesthetician school it’s because I want to learn different spa treatments so I can open my spa. In the spa, I will also offer free classes to young girls about how to paint their nails, skincare and so much more. This way I can use my business degree to help girls with their self-esteem because at that age I would have loved it. After I’m done with aesthetician school, I want to begin practicing law. I specifically want to do criminal justice to work with people who were wrongly convicted of crimes. Helping people, inspiring children, and gaining generational wealth are what inspires me to get a degree in business.

Living a healthy lifestyle will not only benefit you physically but as well as mentally. I believe that it is important to live a healthy lifestyle because you are setting the tone of your every day life. Typically, if you are constantly eating junk food and not properly feeling your body you’re not gonna feel to your best. Most people often feel tired, unmotivated, and unproductive and that’s just from the simple fact of not eating properly. Getting a proper diet that includes a variety of different food helps your heart, digestive system, bones, so much more in your body. Junk food does not hold any nutritional value like fruit or vegetable do. Eating a different variety of healthy foods also helps you when you are older it makes you less prone to getting sicknesses like diabetes or high cholesterol. Another reason why people often feel this way, is because they’re not moving their body as long or as often as they should. Although most people work out to make their body look good, exercising can also make your body feel good. Exercising can also help with stress, anxiety, and depression and in natural yet efficient away. When exercising you do not have to work out to the full extent and dripping with sweat every time you do. You can do things like walking in the park, yoga, or dancing and as long as you’re getting your heart rate up it’s considered exercise. One thing that most people forget to consider when thinking about the importance of a healthy lifestyle is that your mental health holds a lot of weight on how you got a project your health lifestyle. One way that you can improve your mental health is by talking to a therapist or writing in a journal. Talking things out or writing things can help express your emotions, your fears, some goals you have or so much more. you don’t have to talk about anything specific you make it your own , as long and as you are benefiting from it. Some ways that I maintain a healthy lifestyle is eating three meals a day, working out frequently, and setting Aside time once a week to write in my journal. I believe that eating three meals a day is important part of maintaining a healthy lifestyle because your body needs the proper fuel to perform to it’s best. I like to have a big breakfast, small lunch, and a large dinner so I can feel full throughout the day. Every meal I include a vegetable, a fruit, grains , and some type of protein. When it comes to exercise, I do play a sport that allows requires me to live weight but besides that I enjoy going on walks in the park near my home. When it comes to writing in my own journal, I often write about things that are going on my life, big changes that are coming up, or things that I need to get off my chest. A healthy lifestyle is something everyone should strive to obtain. Life is short and you should try to live it to the fullest.
