Hi, my name is Javonna and from an early age, I became accustomed to providing care to others. I grew up with a sickly grandmother that had a combination of lupus and rheumatoid arthritis. I wished I could take her pain away, so I did everything in my power to keep her happy. This cultivated my passion for helping others live healthy lives. I aspire to provide quality care to the community and close the socioeconomic gap when it comes to healthcare.
I have just started my BSN program. I have been having trouble finding funds for my program and furthering my education recently. I have many years of volunteering and research under my belt. I also spent 5 plus years as a musician. I am a first-generation college student and plan to impact my community. I will not only stop at my BSN, but I plan on earning my CRNA degree in the future.
Thank you for visiting my Profile :))

Mighty Memorial Scholarship
The movement of the wind is incredible to me, its determination to flow and push despite any obstacle resembles strength. When something is blocking the flow of wind, its only response is to push harder and increase the pressure because the wind, an element found in nature, aims to keep moving forward. For nearly my entire life, I had to resemble the wind. Ever since I was young, I cared for my grandmother who suffers from rheumatoid arthritis and lupus. I was always happy to help my grandmother because on top of her illnesses, she also suffered from depression, and seeing her smile meant the world to me. Once I got older, I took her to doctor appointments and surgery operations. During all my time in the healthcare facilities, I started to admire the nurses who aided my grandmother and treated her with kindness. I also admired their strength and confidence in my grandmother's successful recovery which gave her hope in times she was in great pain. Because of my experiences with my grandmother, I grew a fondness for healthcare and became more interested in nursing and obtaining my BSN.
I won't stop at just my bachelor's, I aspire to keep pushing forward toward continuing my education and earning a degree higher than my BSN. I plan on obtaining a Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist (CRNA) degree. I always had a love for surgery and the process associated with it. My grandmother has had multiple surgeries and witnessing how the nurses there operate inspired me to be a helping hand in a procedure as meticulous as surgery. I want to provide for my patients in their most vulnerable state and ensure they come out of the surgery room in good condition. The opportunity of receiving my BSN will open the doors to earning my CRNA. Being able to give back to my family and the community with the skills obtained from the NSU nursing program would be my most significant accomplishment to date.
If I can complete my degree, I want to positively impact my community by aiding individuals with minimal socioeconomic benefits. Health disparities especially in underprivileged communities are often overlooked, due to negligence and lack of compassion. I see myself as a future healthcare provider who will take the extra step and advocate for my patient's well-being. I want to provide a safe and inviting environment for my patients where their concerns can be heard without the fear of judgment. I also want to work for an organization or start an organization that closes the gap between underprivileged individuals and healthcare. I believe that effective healthcare should be accessible to all citizens, and no one should be hesitant to seek medical help. Overall, I plan on giving back to the community that aided me in obtaining my BSN. I want to provide for my patients in their most vulnerable state and ensure they come out of the facility in good condition. The opportunity of receiving my BSN will open the doors to earning my CRNA.
Instead of seeing my struggles as disasters, I view them as craving tools that shaped how I am today. I go through life repeating the same mantra to myself; I have the power within me to keep going, and I will always find a way to succeed despite my predicament. I live by this. It reminds me to always keep my head above water because with every low there has to be a high.

The movement of the wind is incredible to me, its determination to flow and push despite any obstacle resembles strength. When something is blocking the flow of wind, its only response is to push harder and increase the pressure because the wind, an element found in nature, aims to keep moving forward. I am a first-generation college student as my parents were born on the island of Jamaica and never received an American education. I always faced different challenges unique to my situation that shaped me into who I am today.
I grew up taking care of my sickly grandmother which opened my eyes to the world of nursing and the impact one person can have on someone's life. During all my time in the healthcare facilities, I started to admire the nurses who aided my grandmother and treated her with kindness. They were skillful, compassionate, and worked with integrity. I also admired their strength and confidence in my grandmother's successful recovery which gave her hope as well in times she was in great pain. My barriers cultivated me into a strong-willed and determined individual. I fell in love with the nursing profession through all my successes and errors.
Since the age of 17, I worked in the medical field. I became a pharmacy technician and gained hands-on experience in taking care of my customers. I made sure they always had the right medications, worked out insurance issues, and was a helping hand anytime a problem arose. In addition, I have volunteered with the American Red Cross, COPD Foundation, and local organizations that gave back to the community.
I want to positively impact my community by aiding individuals with minimal socioeconomic benefits. Health disparities especially in the African American community are often overlooked. The mortality rates of African American patients are still higher than many other demographics, which is due to negligence and prejudice. I see myself as a future healthcare provider that will take the extra step and advocate for my patient's well-being.
One of the reasons why I want to enter healthcare revolves around the importance to increase racial diversity in healthcare. Increasing racial diversity within healthcare will bring forth a higher tolerance for ethnically diverse patients. By providing culturally aware healthcare workers, diversifying the healthcare system will only bring positive results and increase patient satisfaction. Racial diversity in healthcare provides a wide range of perspectives from all different ethnic groups to ensure that correct decisions are made and benefit everyone. Racial representation in healthcare is important to ensure that all patients receive equity within their treatments rather than just equality. As a pharmacy technician, I saw the benefits of racial diversity when I noticed that some of my customers expressed more concerns with me than with other coworkers. I was able to empathize and actively advocate for them.
The nursing industry is a career path that I know I need to be a part of. I am passionate about the health of the community and providing preventative measures with treatment. I want to see my patients prosper and come out of my care better than when they entered. Like the wind, I aspire to keep pushing forward with my goals.

The movement of the wind is incredible to me, its determination to flow and push despite any obstacle resembles strength. When something is blocking the flow of wind, its only response is to push harder and increase the pressure because the wind, an element found in nature, aims to keep moving forward. I see my determination despite all the barriers I face as strong as the wind.
I am a first-generation college student as my parents were born on the island of Jamaica and never received an American education. Since elementary school, I recall having to navigate my academic career without the help of my parents or family members. I always faced different challenges unique to my situation that shaped me into who I am today. My barriers cultivated me into a strong-willed and determined individual. I became accustomed to organizing my grandmother's medication and helping her with daily tasks. I was always happy to help my grandmother because on top of her illnesses, she also suffered from depression, and seeing her smile meant the world to me. Both were autoimmune diseases and they progressively got worse throughout the years, throughout all the times my grandmother just wanted to lay in bed and give up, I encouraged her to keep going.
My grandmother was a strong woman and I aspire to have a fire within me just like she did. During all my time in the healthcare facilities, I started to admire the nurses who aided my grandmother and treated her with kindness. I believe increasing racial diversity in healthcare would positively impact the world of healthcare. This is another reason why I decided to become a nurse and improve the quality of life for my patients. Diversifying the healthcare system will only bring positive results and increase patient satisfaction by providing culturally aware healthcare workers. Besides provider-patient relationships, racial diversity in healthcare provides a wide range of perspectives from all different ethnic groups to ensure that correct decisions are made and benefit everyone. Leadership is forming your own path through an intimating storm, I aspire to create this path because I have the aspiration of helping others and improving society. When I encounter people I want to leave a positive impact on their lives and be a helping hand because growing up I didn't have many people to rely on. As I enter true adulthood I witness many injustices that are not being changed, so I decided to become the change. Leadership is a calling curated by specific experiences one faces.

When something is blocking the flow of wind, its only response is to push harder and increase the pressure because the wind, an element found in nature, aims to keep moving forward. Perseverance, just like the wind, is the ability to go on when things seem hopeless. As students, it is impossible to achieve personal success without having a goal, or direction. The purpose and direction that often propels us to achieve our goals is perseverance. Perseverance is the ability to forge ahead despite setbacks that threaten to undermine all efforts to succeed. It is finding the strength to do the impossible because you know that all things are possible. It understands that your tomorrow has great possibilities because of the steps you take today. Perseverance has gotten me to where I am today, I am grateful to have the opportunity to give back to the community through my future profession. Perseverance will continue to push me toward the direction of my success because without perseverance there's no hope as well.

I believe it is important to increase racial diversity in healthcare and I want to be part of this transition. I believe further diversifying the healthcare system will provide a comfortable and collaborative experience for all patients and providers. Increasing racial diversity within healthcare will bring forth a higher tolerance for ethnically diverse patients and further immerse the healthcare field in different ethnic backgrounds. Patients will feel more interconnected with providers with similar backgrounds as them. The patients may also be more willing to share information with a provider that has knowledge of a wide range of cultures and religions. On the other hand, providers will have more insight into the patient’s needs if they share an ethnic background or religion. This can range from decisions made locally within healthcare facilities or on a national scale. Racial representation in healthcare is important to ensure that all patients receive equity within their treatments rather than just equality. I am happy to announce that I will be part of this movement when I enter the healthcare system.

As college approached my parents separated and my mother moved far away. Becoming dependent on only my father was a major financial setback pertaining to college. I dreamed of coming to a university, but then I was not sure I would be able to attend because of the cost. So, my father worked extra hard and took out loans for my benefit. Now, he is getting elderly and has medical conditions that inhibit him from working as much. If I can receive this scholarship, it would help me in more ways than one. Becoming a nurse is a dream for me; with this scholarship, I could make it a reality.
Because of my hardships, I want to positively impact my community by aiding individuals with minimal socioeconomic benefits. My grandmother has had multiple surgeries and witnessing how the nurses there operate inspired me to be a helping hand in a procedure as meticulous as surgery. I want to provide for my patients in their most vulnerable state and ensure they come out of the surgery room in good condition. The funds I receive from this scholarship will help me obtain my BSN and implement my dreams into reality. The opportunity of receiving my BSN will open the doors to earning my CRNA. Being able to give back to my family and the community with the skills obtained from the NSU nursing program would be my biggest accomplishment to date.
This can range from decisions made locally within healthcare facilities or on a national scale. Racial representation in healthcare is important to ensure that all patients receive equity within their treatments rather than just equality. I am happy to announce that I will be part of this movement when I enter the healthcare system.

Charity's Alumnus Erudition Award
For nearly my entire life I have had a passion for taking care of others. In addition, my love for the human body and medicine lead me toward the nursing pathway. Ever since I was young, I cared for my grandmother who suffers from rheumatoid arthritis and lupus. I became accustomed to organizing my grandmother's medication and helping her with daily tasks. I was always happy to help my grandmother because on top of her illnesses, she also suffered from depression, and seeing her smile meant the world to me. Once I got older, I took her to doctor appointments and surgery operations. During all my time in the healthcare facilities, I started to admire the nurses who aided my grandmother and treated her with kindness. They were skillful, compassionate, and worked with integrity. I also admired their strength and confidence in my grandmother's successful recovery which gave her hope as well in times she was in great pain. Because of my experiences with my grandmother, I grew a fondness for healthcare and took medical-related electives while in high school. Upon exceeding in those classes I became more interested in nursing and obtaining my BSN.

I fell in love with the nursing profession through all my successes and errors.

The biggest challenge I will face in my future career is balancing my time between work and family. I want to be able to spend time with loved ones however I know once I graduate, I will fall in love with my career. Nursing is the only thing I could imagine myself doing; balancing my happiness between my career and my loved ones may be difficult. Another challenge I think I would encounter is delivering devastating news to patients and their loved ones. In a perfect world, everyone who enters a healthcare facility walks out healthier than when they entered; unfortunately, that’s not always the case. I will use my skills of empathy and compassion to deliver the news as best as I can. Some of the rewards I can predict in the future with my career are fulfillment, giving back to my community, and being able to be that helping hand in someone's recovery. As a future nurse, I look forward to my roles as a mentor, educator, advocate, and counselor. I also see the ability to use my skills to nurture someone back to a healthy state or comfort them in a time of need as a reward.

I see my future as a nurse as gratifying, even though the trivializations I may face will be treacherous, I know in my heart this is the career for me. Many people say that nursing is a calling, and I have followed that voice for more than half my life. Now while in the program I know I will be successful. If I can receive this scholarship, my dreams would become a reality and I can finally complete my BSN.
