Bio

Hello, my name is Jason Starr, and I am a senior at BHS who is passionate in public health research and community service. I appreciate your time and consideration for my application! In high school, I pursued public health by getting certified in Epidemiology from JHU, placing semifinalist in Biology Olympiad, interning in Albert Einstein College of Medicine, and creating a disease model for COVID-19 health equity (www.localcovidmodel.org). I published 3 first-authored papers in ICBB (International Conference for Bioengineering & Biotech), IEEE ICIIBMS, APHA’s annual meeting, and the JBEB journal. At ICBB, I was the only high school student to win the Best Paper Award. I was named a Regeneron STS Scholar and a Jack Kent Cooke Semifinalist, and I placed in several regional science fairs. Also, I founded Tutor Partnerships (TP, www.tutorpartnerships.com), a nonprofit that matches volunteer tutors with younger students in need. Leading a team of 29, I established chapters of our program in 27 schools. I host in-person orientations and award ceremonies to motivate tutors and create a sense of community. We were selected by NPSS, President Biden’s call-to-action, for Student Support Accelerator induction. My single mom’s small business is struggling due to COVID-19, and our FAFSA EFC is 0. I was recently accepted to college early decision but did not receive any financial aid despite qualifying for Pell grant. With scholarships, I hope to afford college, pursue my career, support my future family, and help others. Thank you so much for considering me!
