    Veterans & Family Scholarship
My mom's life as a veteran isn't the picture of smooth sailing the VA promises. The stark contrast between the comprehensive care she deserves and the frustrating reality of missed appointments and unmet needs has become a driving force in my life. Witnessing her struggles opened my eyes to the shortcomings within the VA system, a system that often fails the very heroes it's meant to serve. The care veterans receive often lacks the thoroughness and efficiency of private healthcare. This disparity is a slap in the face to those who dedicated themselves to protecting our country. It's more than just long wait times and missed appointments; it's a disservice to their well-being. Upon completing college, I aim to be part of the solution. I aim to advocate for a more efficient and equitable healthcare system for veterans, ensuring they receive the high-quality, accessible care they deserve. This fight can take many forms: pushing for better policies, streamlining VA procedures, or exploring alternative care models within the system. One major area I'd address is the neglected state of dental care within the VA. Veterans often face significant hurdles in accessing the dental services they need. A healthy smile shouldn't be a privilege for those who serve our nation. Making dental care readily available would be a significant step towards better overall health for veterans. Another crucial focus is mental health. The stigma surrounding mental health treatment within the veteran community is a serious issue. Many veterans carry the invisible wounds of war, bearing the weight of trauma in silence. This "badge of honor" mentality prevents them from seeking help, leading to further health problems later in life. We need to normalize mental health treatment within the VA and make these services readily available, not just for veterans but for the broader community as well. My vision extends beyond the walls of the VA. I want to use my education and future career to create more resources for veterans within our communities. These resources could range from support groups to job training programs aimed at helping veterans thrive and reach their full potential. By fostering a more inclusive environment, we can ensure veterans feel supported and empowered within the VA system and in all aspects of their lives. Ultimately, I aim to create a future where veterans don't have to fight for quality healthcare. The money I earn from this scholarship will be a stepping stone towards achieving that vision. It will allow me to pursue the education and training necessary to make a real difference in the lives of veterans. This scholarship isn't just an investment in my future; it's an investment in a future where veterans receive the care and respect they deserve.
ADHDAdvisor's Mental Health Advocate Scholarship for Health Students
Living with a mental illness has instilled in me a deep understanding of empathy and the power of support. Beyond managing my own condition, I actively participate in support groups, not just for personal well-being but also to empower others battling similar challenges. I understand the isolating nature of mental illness firsthand. Having a supportive ally can significantly lessen the burden. My experience fosters a genuine connection with others, allowing me to understand their struggles intuitively. Simply offering a listening ear and the reassurance that they are not alone can make a profound difference. This alone can even alter the course of their recovery. My journey to becoming a strong advocate wasn't easy. It took over thirteen years of personal struggle to reach a point where I could not only manage my illness but actively support others. This experience has earned me immense empathy and resilience. While offering support, I've also discovered that the connections I build are mutually beneficial, providing me with a sense of purpose and belonging.

My mother, Davetta, is the cornerstone of my academic journey. Her unwavering strength and unwavering belief in my potential have propelled me forward, even during challenging times. She has lifted, carried, and sheltered me when I most need her nourishment. She provided strong but caring words, and she has moved my life into dimensions beyond words. Even when we were impoverished, she gave me the last bit of food, promising me that I have the power to make things better in the future. Davetta was always there to wipe away the tears, provide motivation, and give me sanity when I thought things were gone. When we faced financial hardship, she instilled in me the power of education to create a brighter future. This experience fostered a deep commitment to learning within me. Our move to New York marked a turning point. Mom recognized my aptitude and encouraged me to focus on academic goals. Her words, "Jason, you're smart. Use your mind constructively and get back into school," became a powerful mantra. We held each other accountable, graduating side-by-side two years later. Inspired by this shared achievement, we promised the news reporter to repeat the feat – a promise we kept, with me attending a different college for my bachelor's degree. This upcoming graduation marks our second time, a testament to our dedication and mutual support. My academic achievements reflect Mom's influence. I have already earned two Associate's degrees and a Bachelor's degree, and I am driven to obtain a Master's degree. This pursuit will not only make me the first person in my family to hold a Master's, but it also embodies Mom's unwavering belief in my potential. My success is a testament to both my hard work and Davetta's unwavering support. Her ability to see the potential I couldn't envision for myself is invaluable. While I can't quantify its worth, it's an inspiration that fuels my ambition. This scholarship opportunity would be a significant step towards achieving my academic goals and fulfilling the promise she saw in me. My mother, Davetta, is the strongest black woman I know.
