Academic Liberty & Free Speech Scholarship
In the educational setting, free speech grants students the platform to voice their thoughts, opinions, and beliefs. Each student is unique, and their individual perspectives enrich the learning experience for everyone. When students are encouraged to share their views, it not only enhances their self-confidence but also nurtures a sense of autonomy and responsibility in their education. Moreover, free speech enables students to advocate for their needs and rights. They can speak up when they feel their education is inadequate or when they face unfair treatment. Through free expression, students can address issues such as biased curriculums, discrimination, or inadequate resources, leading to positive changes within the education system. One essential aspect of free speech in education is the preservation of relevant history. When students are allowed to explore historical events from various perspectives, it promotes a comprehensive understanding of the past. Limiting free speech could result in a biased or whitewashed version of history, depriving students of critical knowledge necessary for informed decision-making in the present and the future. The value of free speech extends beyond the classroom walls and into the political landscape. It provides a fundamental tool for students to engage in discussions about crucial issues affecting their communities and society as a whole. Without free speech, students would be stifled in their ability to advocate for issues such as equality, affirmative action, or critical race theory. A society that suppresses the voices of its youth loses out on the innovative solutions they can offer to address pressing challenges. Freedom of speech is closely intertwined with freedom of expression. Both are essential rights that go hand in hand, allowing individuals to share their creativity, experiences, and emotions. In the educational context, freedom of expression encourages students to think outside the box, innovate, and present their ideas in diverse and imaginative ways. As a future clinical therapist, I am passionate about empowering students and adults alike to find their voices and speak up confidently. I believe that learning to assert oneself, both in the classroom and politically, is crucial for personal growth and positive societal change. By encouraging individuals to express their thoughts and beliefs, we create a more inclusive and tolerant society where diverse perspectives are embraced. In a world where freedom of speech is under constant threat, it is essential to recognize it as a natural right worth defending. It is through open dialogue, free expression, and respectful debates that we make progress and foster a society that thrives on diversity and inclusivity. To achieve this vision, I intend to dedicate my career to psychology, using it as a means to teach individuals how to effectively communicate and stand up for their rights. Empowering students to speak up for themselves, advocate for their education, and engage in political discourse is a path towards a brighter and more equitable future. In conclusion, free speech is a fundamental pillar in education, enabling students to voice their opinions, fight for their rights, and contribute to a more inclusive and innovative future. It is a right worth safeguarding and fighting for, as it is a vital part of maintaining democratic societies and fostering personal growth. I am committed to empowering individuals to find their voices and become active participants in shaping a world where free expression and open dialogue thrive.
    Linda Hicks Memorial Scholarship
When my brother returned early from college, he was a completely different person. Distracted, distant, and forgetful. When I realized I could no longer depend on him, it became evident that something was wrong. During those early days, I clung to the hope that he would recover. Even when I looked at him, and it seemed like he wasn’t there at all, as he scratched at his skin, like it itched on the inside, as he continued to forget words that just left his mouth, and conversations that he was recently present in, I chose to believe it would all resolve itself. The gravity of his situation didn't truly hit me until the night my parents received a dreaded phone call, and my sister and I rushed to the hospital. My brother had overdosed, and for the first time, I feared losing him forever. Thankfully, he survived, but the experience was a wake-up call that addiction is not an ailment that one merely recovers from; it is a lifelong condition that demands constant vigilance and support. As he went through rehab, I came to understand the complexities of addiction and the burden it places not only on the individual but also on their loved ones. My brother's journey towards recovery was marked by highs and lows that kept us on edge, never knowing if the next relapse was around the corner. Despite the distance that now separates us, I still find myself worried every time I call him. He reassures me that he's okay, but his addiction has instilled a lingering sense of doubt. Due to his addiction, I don’t know that I’ll ever be able to trust that he really is well and that will sit with me for the rest of my life. As a black woman, I am hyperaware of the stigma surrounding mental health in black communities. The expectation to be strong and resilient, due to decades of injustice and pain, has silenced the conversation on mental well-being. But my brother's struggle has motivated me to break this silence. I’m going into the field of psychology to provide much-needed mental healthcare for the black community, particularly black women who often bear the brunt of societal pressure. Through my journey, I hope to destigmatize mental health issues and provide a safe space for individuals to seek help without judgment or fear of being seen as weak. I want to support those, like my brother, who feel trapped in their pain so that they don’t feel like drugs are their only escape. I want to advocate for early intervention and comprehensive mental health care that addresses the unique challenges faced by the black community. While my brother's struggle has been a harrowing experience, it has also ignited a sense of purpose within me. Witnessing the toll addiction has taken on him and our family has motivated me to channel my pain into good. I believe that with the right resources and support, individuals can find the strength to overcome their battles and reclaim their lives. In conclusion, my brother's battle with addiction has been a profound journey of understanding, resilience, and hope. Witnessing his struggle has awakened my desire to break the barriers surrounding mental health in black communities. Through my pursuit of psychology, I hope to be an advocate for mental healthcare, empowering those in need to seek help without shame or fear. My ultimate goal is to provide a path towards healing and recovery, sparing others from enduring the anguish and pain that my family and I have faced.
Scholarship Institute’s Annual Women’s Leadership Scholarship
In middle school, I discovered my knack for taking the lead on group projects. I recognized the importance of teamwork and communication in achieving our goals efficiently. I facilitated discussions, delegated tasks based on individual strengths, and ensured everyone felt heard and valued. By fostering a collaborative and inclusive environment, we not only excelled academically but also built strong bonds that extended beyond the classroom. Fast forward to the workplace, where I faced challenges that tested my adaptability and composure. During times of crisis when our team ran out of a product or faced machine breakdowns, my colleagues were overwhelmed with frustration and panic. However, I stepped up as a calming influence, swiftly devising alternative solutions and motivating my coworkers to remain focused on the end goal. Through my leadership, we not only resolved the issues efficiently but also strengthened our team's resilience and problem-solving abilities. Beyond the workplace, I have consistently shown a commitment to advocating for cultural understanding and inclusivity. In history class, when my peers laughed at aspects of other cultures they never tried to understand, I couldn't stay silent. I bravely spoke up, sharing my perspectives and urging them to approach different cultures with empathy and open-mindedness. I firmly believe that empathy is the key to breaking down barriers and fostering a more harmonious society. My dedication to promoting empathy extends to my personal relationships as well. I have always encouraged my friends and family to consider people from diverse backgrounds, fostering an environment where all feel welcomed and respected. By pushing those around me to broaden their perspectives, I believe we can create a ripple effect of positive change in the world. As a woman of color, I recognize the importance of empowering others who share similar experiences. I aim to use my leadership skills to create spaces where women of color can thrive, voice their opinions, and take on leadership roles in various fields. Through mentorship programs, workshops, and advocacy initiatives, I plan to support and uplift women of color, helping them overcome barriers and embrace their full potential. In conclusion, my journey of leadership has been shaped by experiences in middle school group projects, the workplace, the classroom, and my personal relationships. I have demonstrated adaptability, composure, and problem-solving skills in challenging situations, and advocated for cultural understanding and empathy. Now, as a woman of color, my plans are set on using my leadership skills to empower others like myself. I am committed to creating a more inclusive society, where all individuals can thrive and contribute meaningfully regardless of their background. By cultivating empathy, advocating for others, and promoting diversity, I believe we can collectively build a brighter and more equitable future.
    Elijah's Helping Hand Scholarship Award
When I mustered the courage to come out to my parents, I had hoped for immediate acceptance and understanding. However, reality proved to be more complex. Their initial reaction was one of shock and disbelief, as they grappled with their preconceived notions of sexuality and relationships. This struggle led to a communication barrier, and a sense of distance began to grow between us. The rejection I perceived from my parents deeply affected my mental health. I felt isolated, burdened by a sense of guilt and shame that I could not control. The seasonal depression I had experienced before was exacerbated by this newfound emotional turmoil. I grappled with feelings of loneliness and worthlessness, questioning whether I would ever feel accepted and loved for who I truly was. As time passed, I realized that my parents' hesitations were not rooted in a lack of love for me but in their own upbringing and cultural beliefs. They grew up in a different era, where societal norms and attitudes towards sexuality were vastly different. Understanding this perspective allowed me to develop empathy and patience, recognizing that their journey towards acceptance might take time. Through open communication and gradual understanding, my parents began to show signs of acceptance. They acknowledged their concerns and fears, admitting that their struggle was not about their love for me but rather about their unfamiliarity with bisexuality. We engaged in meaningful conversations that allowed us to bridge the gap and strengthen our bond. While their acceptance was not instantaneous, it was genuine and heartfelt. Their reassurance that they loved me unconditionally, regardless of my sexual orientation, marked a turning point in our relationship. It allowed me to breathe a sigh of relief and reaffirmed my belief that love, compassion, and empathy could heal even the deepest wounds. As my parents learned to embrace my identity, I too grew in understanding. I realized that acceptance is not always immediate, and people need time to process change. My experiences taught me the importance of patience, both with others and with myself. I discovered that healing is a gradual process that requires compassion and self-forgiveness. Throughout this journey, I also found solace in the support of friends and the LGBTQ+ community. Surrounding myself with individuals who understood and celebrated my identity bolstered my sense of belonging and acceptance. Their love and affirmation were crucial in helping me rebuild my self-esteem and emotional well-being. My parents' eventual acceptance not only brought us closer but also inspired me to become an advocate for greater understanding and empathy within families. I realized that my story is just one of many, and that acceptance and unconditional love should be at the core of all relationships. In conclusion, coming out as bisexual was a significant step towards self-discovery and embracing my identity with pride. However, the journey towards acceptance from my parents was not without its challenges. The distance that emerged between us impacted my mental health, triggering seasonal depression. Nevertheless, with time and understanding, I recognized that their hesitation was rooted in their upbringing and societal norms. Their eventual acceptance, coupled with the support of friends and the LGBTQ+ community, paved the way for healing and reconciliation. This experience has transformed me into an advocate for empathy, acceptance, and love within families, emphasizing that genuine connections are nurtured through patience, understanding, and a willingness to embrace one another with open hearts.
Growing up in the Family Restaurant Business Scholarship
Working at my father’s ice cream shop while attending school was a fulfilling yet demanding endeavor. On one hand, I cherished being part of a family business, connecting with customers, and contributing to its success. On the other hand, I faced the constant pressure of academic responsibilities, leaving little time for personal pursuits and self-care. The struggle to strike a balance between work and school taught me valuable life skills. I honed my time management abilities, learning to allocate my time efficiently and effectively. I found ways to stay organized and prioritize tasks to avoid feeling overwhelmed. These skills have become essential assets in both my personal and professional life, enabling me to navigate various responsibilities with confidence. Moreover, the experience taught me the importance of resilience and adaptability. There were days when fatigue and stress threatened to overpower me, but I pushed through, determined to fulfill my commitments. Adapting to unexpected situations and learning to be flexible in my approach proved vital in managing both the ice cream shop and my studies simultaneously. As I delved deeper into the challenges of balancing work, school, and other responsibilities, I began to reflect on the broader restaurant industry. I noticed that many establishments faced similar struggles in managing staff, customer service, and overall operations. This observation gave me an idea. It would involve developing a user-friendly, all-in-one restaurant management app. This app would streamline various aspects of restaurant operations, from staff scheduling and inventory management to customer service and feedback. By centralizing these functions into one platform, restaurant owners and managers could optimize their processes, leading to increased efficiency and improved customer experiences. The app would include features that facilitate staff scheduling and communication, making it easier for employees to manage their shifts and collaborate with their teams. This would not only alleviate the stress on restaurant staff but also lead to a more productive and harmonious work environment. Furthermore, the app would include a customer service component that allows for seamless communication between guests and the restaurant. Customers could provide feedback, make reservations, and inquire about menu items, all through the app. This would enhance the overall dining experience and demonstrate the restaurant’s commitment to attentive and personalized service. In addition, the app would offer inventory management tools, enabling restaurants to keep track of their stock levels and streamline ordering processes. This feature would reduce waste, optimize inventory turnover, and contribute to cost savings for the restaurant owners. One of the key advantages of this app would be its user-friendly interface, making it accessible to restaurant owners and staff of all technological backgrounds. By providing a simple and intuitive solution, the app could be adopted by a wide range of restaurants, from small family-owned businesses to larger establishments. My struggles in balancing responsibilities at the ice cream shop and school have inspired this idea, as I understand firsthand the challenges faced by restaurant owners and staff. By creating a platform that alleviates some of these burdens, the app has the potential to revolutionize the restaurant industry. It would allow efficient communication and improved service, leading to increased success and customer satisfaction. Overall, my experience at my father’s ice cream shop has been instrumental in shaping who I am today. The lessons in time management, resilience, and adaptability have prepared me for various challenges in life and I hope that one day, maybe my idea can become a reality, and help those like me, who are motivated by their role in supporting their families.

My Journey towards Clinical Psychology and Psychiatry as a Black Woman Growing up, I endured a persistent sense of emotional invalidation from my father, leaving me feeling dismissed and silenced. As a black woman, I also faced the harsh reality of discrimination and witnessed various forms of injustice in society. These profound experiences have guided my path towards clinical psychology and psychiatry, fueled by a deep desire to promote understanding, empathy, and healing for those who have experienced similar challenges. From a young age, my emotions were often met with indifference or brushed aside by my father. This emotional invalidation left me feeling voiceless and unheard, fostering a growing awareness of the importance of emotional validation in nurturing mental well-being. The emotional toll of these experiences drove me to explore the world of psychology, seeking to understand the complexities of emotions and their impact on mental health. As I embarked on my academic journey, I was acutely aware of my dual identity as a black woman. Experiencing discrimination and witnessing injustices within the black community and beyond further motivated me to make a difference in the lives of marginalized individuals. I recognized that the intersectionality of my identity presented unique challenges, and I was determined to use my experiences to cultivate empathy and understanding in my future practice. Throughout my studies, I explored the link between discrimination and mental health, seeking to comprehend the lasting effects of societal inequalities on emotional well-being. I was determined to address these complex issues in my future career and contribute to breaking the barriers that hinder marginalized communities from accessing quality mental health care. As I progressed in my academic pursuits, I found myself drawn to the holistic approach that psychiatry offered. I realized that emotional struggles experienced by individuals from marginalized backgrounds were often compounded by biological and neurochemical factors. By combining clinical psychology with psychiatry, I believed I could provide a comprehensive approach to mental health care that acknowledged both psychological and physiological aspects. My experiences of emotional invalidation and witnessing injustice motivated me to create a therapeutic environment where individuals from diverse backgrounds felt genuinely heard and understood. I sought to use my platform to advocate for the mental health needs of marginalized communities, addressing the unique challenges they face due to discrimination and systemic inequities. As a black woman entering the field of clinical psychology and psychiatry, I am determined to confront the racial biases that can pervade the mental health care system. I aim to increase cultural competency and awareness among mental health professionals, ensuring that individuals from marginalized backgrounds receive culturally sensitive and equitable care. Moreover, I intend to actively engage in research that sheds light on the disparities in mental health care experienced by marginalized communities. By identifying these gaps and advocating for change, I hope to contribute to a more inclusive and accessible mental health care system that caters to the needs of all individuals, regardless of their background. In conclusion, my experiences of emotional invalidation and witnessing injustice as a black woman have been instrumental in shaping my path towards clinical psychology and psychiatry. These profound encounters have instilled in me a deep sense of empathy and determination to create a more understanding and equitable mental health care environment. I am committed to using my knowledge and platform to address the unique challenges faced by marginalized communities, fostering healing and promoting mental well-being for all. Through my work, I aspire to empower individuals to embrace their emotions and stories, and ultimately, find strength and resilience in their journey towards healing and personal growth.
    Terry Crews "Creative Courage" Scholarship
During quarantine, I did not feel like myself and I could not talk to my friends due to covid. When I did not have a voice, I wrote my thoughts down. Eventually, when I started to look at the people, the country, and the world around me, I decided that I wanted to give a voice to those who had no voice. I want to spread awareness to the world about mental health, racism, female empowerment, equal rights, etc. I want to share my thoughts with the world. My poetry is my microphone. I plan to use it.
