Marie Jean Baptiste Memorial Scholarship
Growing up in a household in constant motion, I quickly adapted to a fast-paced life filled with responsibilities. Whether it was discussing topics for church with my father or comforting myself during moments of anxiety, I cherish the close relationship I have with my family. From a young age, I took on a parental role for my brothers, ensuring dinner was ready, their homework was done, and their clothes were set out for school the next day. These responsibilities helped me grow and mature, and I even managed to graduate from high school a year early.
As a member of the Zeta Phi Beta Youth Auxiliary Group, I have had the opportunity to assist many people from various demographics. One of my most memorable experiences was participating in a clothing and food drive for the homeless. Assigned to the shoe station during winter, I saw firsthand the dire need for proper footwear among those attending. It was heartbreaking to see not only adults but also children my age needing help. I made sure the children could pick the shoes they wanted and ensured they fit correctly. One father’s request for soccer cleats for his nephew particularly touched me, and I was grateful to find a pair for him. The smiles and gratitude from the people I helped reaffirmed the significant impact of small acts of kindness.
Although I have not had the opportunity to hold a job or join as many clubs and organizations as I wished, I have dedicated a significant amount of time to volunteering. Helping others, making their lives easier, or simply brightening their day brings me immense joy. Everyone faces their own battles, and I have learned that something as simple as sharing a funny video or cooking a meal can turn someone's day around. My appreciation for serving others began after my first visit to a senior citizen’s facility in middle school. The residents' expressions of thankfulness and their words of gratitude were incredibly fulfilling. This motivated me to continue visiting the retirement center and perform other selfless acts of kindness through various organizations.
Looking ahead, I plan to sustain my community involvement post-college by continuing to volunteer and contribute to causes that I am passionate about. I aspire to leverage my skills in computational biology and computer science to address global health challenges and improve healthcare outcomes. By integrating technology with medical research, I hope to develop innovative solutions that can make a real difference in people's lives.
Receiving this scholarship would significantly support my educational and career goals, enabling me to further my studies and contribute meaningfully to my community. I am committed to using my knowledge and skills to help others and make a positive impact on society. Thank you for considering my application.
Chris Jackson Computer Science Education Scholarship
In eighth grade, I took my first computer science class, but it was a struggle due to the loud and disruptive environment. I almost dropped the class until I began working on a website project about aerial silks. Despite the challenges, I was captivated by creating something from scratch. I chose a vibrant pink background, selected pictures of aerial silk performers, and filled the webpage with detailed information. Completing this project made me realize the incredible potential of computer science.
What solidified my love for computer science was developing my first game, "Gasolina," where a red car collects gas while avoiding toxic bottles. The player could lose by either running out of gas or losing too much life. Seeing my ideas come to life through coding was thrilling and showed me that computer science is not just about learning languages but also about creating meaningful and enjoyable projects.
As I continued my journey in computer science, I started to question the broader applications of my skills. Creating games and websites was fun, but I wanted to use my abilities for something more impactful. My passion for science led me to explore ways to combine computer science with scientific research. It was during this exploration that I discovered computational biology, a field that perfectly merges my interests in science and technology.
With this newfound direction, I set my sights on addressing national challenges through the power of computer science, artificial intelligence, and science. At the National Institute of Health, I had the opportunity to develop a portal that promotes patient awareness of their low-density lipids concentration. This portal, the first of its kind accessible to the public, aims to improve cardiovascular health awareness and patient outcomes.
My goal is to continue in this direction, focusing on developing and applying clinical applications for cancer research and detection tools. I aspire to earn a PhD in computational biology, complemented by a degree in computer science. I am committed to advancing research projects and assisting in existing ones, to revolutionize medical procedures and provide access to new tools for early disease detection and treatment.
My dedication to integrating computer science with scientific research has shown me the transformative power of technology in healthcare. I am eager to continue making meaningful contributions to this field. This scholarship will provide the support I need to achieve my goals and drive innovations in computational biology.
In conclusion, my journey from an uncertain eighth-grader to a passionate student of computational biology and computer science has been driven by a desire to make a difference. With this scholarship, I will further my education and research, contributing to the advancement of science and technology for the betterment of society. Thank you for considering my application.
