I looked outside the window of the backseat in my father's car as we made our way to my school which was in a different city from my childhood home. I had never seen anything like this in my neighborhood. The cottage-style single homes, the open areas of grass, the absence of trash and graffiti, and the quietness of the town. No one in my school lived in the city, I lived in either. They all lived in the city in which the school existed. All this was confusing to my youth brain as I struggled to grasp the difference between the city I lived in and the city in which my school was. However, a part of me still knew how financially my mom struggled. Especially, after the separation of her and my dad. I knew from the little things she'd say to me when we went to the store and when we'd find ourselves too be in the clearance section only. I knew from how we didn't fix any technical issues right away in our household. I knew from how eventually we cut the cable and I would watch PBS kids. I knew from how different my house was compared to my friends that I had playdates with. Even though we were not the most fortunate, my mom had always prioritized education for her kids. Despite financial issues, my mom strived to put me and my two sisters that she had after separating with my dad in private education. Through her selflessness, she chose private education for her children over materialistic things that she could've gotten with that money. Despite her being a single mother with a low income, my two sisters and I have been attending religious-affiliated private schools all of our lives. That being said, I am very inspired by both my mother and my low-income background to strive for the best for my children and community. I want to be able to put my children into private education without struggling financially. While materialistic things does not and never will matter, I want to be able to live comfortably and not have to feel like I have to struggle to do so. Seeing my mom struggle for us and the things she wanted in life often implemented the idea for me that I had to struggle to be where I am in life. However, I understand now that my mother made these sacrifices so that doors can be opened to me without struggle. I hope I can make the same environment for my children as well.
