Dr. Alexanderia K. Lane Memorial Scholarship
I would like to first thank The Dr. Alexanderia K. Lane Memorial Scholarship Committee for extending the very generous opportunity for students to financially reach their academic goals, whether for college or technical training. I believe this kind act fulfills and alludes to the essay question in its entirety, and is the chief mission behind Dr. Lane’s legacy.
With that being said, I believe it is vital to help others because acts of charity exudes and promotes kindness, and kindness is an essential attribute to a well-functioning society, and is something that I have observed is desperately lacking in today’s millennial generation, even society at large. According to the Cambridge Dictionary, kindness is defined as “the quality of being generous, helpful, and caring about other people, or an act of showing this trait.” In my humble observation, society should be functioning in a symbiotic fashion where random and non-self-serving acts and gestures of kindness are expressed as a societal norm, and not the random exception; however, because society is functioning in a fashion that is self-serving and cold natured, it is collapsing, with the rates of depression, anxiety, and suicide escalating across every age sector and demographic of society. This alarming epidemic shows why helping one another through acts of kindness is so critical at this time.
By my observation, the attribute of wanting to help others is either inherently in a person, or comes about through one’s own humbling circumstances. As a young adult, the latter was my circumstance. Humility brings about empathy and empathy is expressed via the sincere desire to extend a helping hand, a resource, or a kind gesture to another. Through a series of life transitions that required me to be highly introspective and honest about my past ways and modes of conduct, I realized how self-serving my life goals and career pursuits actually were. Like most young people, my aspirations were to get a great education, to then in turn, “make my proverbial mark on society”, which included thoughts of a grandiose existence because this is the ethos of “The American Dream” doctrine that was subconsciously part of my dichotomy as a first generation American. However, after a series of very humbling and dare I say fortunate circumstances, I now look to make my mark and an indelible impression on society by staying humble in order to extend random acts of kindness to others in need, in the same fashion that Dr. Alexanderia K. Lane is doing and has done via her charitable foundation and legacy.
In conclusion, from my experiences, helping others gives people the hope, comfort and encouragement to persevere through the challenges that will inevitably arise in an ever-evolving and desensitized world. In my opinion, world change starts at the community level. Thriving communities in which kindness is part of the moral fabric of society inevitably produces stronger nations and stronger nations with the underpinning of kindness, will result in positive world change. I plan to play my small part in helping others by becoming a certified electrician in order to learn a trade that I can use to inevitably help others, particularly, the elderly and non-profit organizations that strive to help the disadvantaged populations. I will do this by operating my affairs with a spirit of excellence, humility, and integrity, while ensuring annually that a percentage of my time, treasure and talent is proactively given to help the groups mentioned. If I am a fortunate recipient of Dr. Lane’s kind gift, I will extend to her legacy by emulating the kindness extended to me by Dr. Alexanderia K. Lane’s benevolence.
