Bio

I would describe myself as a young, ambitious, talented, and smart young scholar. I am a man of God before anything! Everything I do is done with a purpose. I tend to strive to be the best version of myself no matter what adversity I may face. I live by the saying, "What doesn't kill you only makes you stronger." I am passionate about living my life to the fullest and finding my niche. Growing up as the middle child in a single parent household with predominately men has taught me to be bold and live life as a fearless man. None of my family members were able to finish school, so I wanted to be the difference maker and break that generational curse. I aspire to work in the finance industry and have taken the leap of faith to expand my knowledge by being a first generational college student. When doors open, you must walk through them with boldness and confidence, and I have been doing just that every day. There is no one who can stop you from reaching your full potential except for yourself.

Life is all about is about challenges, whether good or bad. But having the courage to say, "I'm going to get through this," and do it is incredible. My dad has always taught to be able to prosper in life; you have to be able to adapt to any situation. Adapting to change can be scary sometimes, especially when the sky is falling on you. There have been times when I've found myself worrying about the "what ifs" and fearing how a situation can hurt my life. When I found myself thinking about the worst of a problem that has dramatically affected my life, I took a step back and reevaluated how I could turn a bad situation into a good one. At a point in my life, life felt like a never-ending uphill battle. I wasn't doing too well mentally. After suffering from a football injury where I needed shoulder surgery, I lost my starting spot and couldn't play the sport I love. It was like a domino effect, and everything around me was falling apart. To be a 16-year-old facing life challenges felt like the worst time of my life. Here is when I remembered what my dad has always taught me. In a time like this, I told myself that I could decide to quit or fight back to prosper through trials and tribulations. I decided to step back to look at my life and understood that God wouldn't put me through anything I couldn't handle. I took time for myself and changed my focus to the positive aspect of everything. I set goals I pushed to accomplish no matter what came my way. I veered towards my family and friends as a support system. With the new mindset I had and the foundation of my support system, I was able to push through the obstacles life threw at me. I learned to turn my experience into life lessons, not only for me but for the future of those around me. I plan to start a mentoring program to benefit my community's children. This program will help guide them through life and all the challenges it will throw at them by assisting them to see the better of things instead of the worst. I realized some kids face adversity and are stuck in doubt and hurt. Some children might not have a strong support system, such as I did, and don't have the courage or motivation to pick themselves back up. My mentoring program will bring everyone together from all backgrounds so they can have that support system. In conclusion, overcoming adversity is not an easy task, and throughout your life journey, there are going to be obstacles you are going to face. Learning to see adversities as strength and motivation will change how you view situations. While I prospered through the bumps and bruises in my past, I know that there are still obstacles in my near future that I must overcome. "You may encounter many defeats, but you must not be defeated. In fact, it may be necessary to encounter the defeats so you can know who you are, what you can rise from, how you can still come out of it." — Maya Angelou.

Given the opportunity, I am committed to making a meaningful and lasting impact on my community. To achieve this, I would focus on three key areas: education, sustainability, and community engagement. Improving my community is important to me because I believe in the power of collective action and the profound difference it can make in people's lives. In this essay, I will outline the initiatives I would undertake and explain why they are crucial for the growth, well-being, and harmony of my community. Reading has the remarkable ability to transport us into the lives of others, providing insights and perspectives that we may not have encountered otherwise. In particular, the book "Passing" by Nella Larsen has had a profound impact on me, broadening my perspective and challenging my understanding of race, identity, and societal constructs. In this essay, I will explore how reading "Passing" and engaging with literature more generally has helped me progress mentally, fostering empathy, critical thinking, and a deeper understanding of the world around me. Reading "Passing" offered a unique window into the complexities of racial identity and the concept of passing in the early 20th century. The novel explores the lives of two African-American women who are able to "pass" as white. Through their experiences, I gained a deeper understanding of the social, cultural, and psychological implications of passing, and the immense personal sacrifices individuals made to navigate a racially divided society. The book challenged my assumptions and forced me to confront the nuances and challenges of racial identity, prompting introspection and a reevaluation of my own preconceived notions. Reading, in general, has the power to cultivate empathy by allowing us to step into the shoes of characters with diverse backgrounds and experiences. Engaging with different narratives and perspectives through literature broadens our understanding of the world, breaking down stereotypes, and promoting empathy. By immersing myself in the characters' lives and emotions, I developed a heightened sensitivity towards the struggles, triumphs, and complexities of others. This empathy extends beyond the pages of a book and informs my interactions with people in real life, encouraging me to approach others with compassion, respect, and a willingness to listen. Literature invites us to engage in critical thinking, analysis, and interpretation. By reading thought-provoking books, we are encouraged to question societal norms, challenge dominant narratives, and develop our own perspectives. "Passing" sparked intellectual curiosity within me, pushing me to reflect on the constructed nature of identity, the influence of societal expectations, and the power dynamics at play in different communities. Through the act of reading, I honed my ability to analyze complex themes, identify underlying messages, and develop a nuanced understanding of human experiences. Books provide a gateway to different cultures, societies, and time periods. Reading exposes us to diverse voices, traditions, and perspectives that expand our cultural awareness and challenge our assumptions. Through "Passing" and other literary works, I have been introduced to characters from various ethnicities, backgrounds, and walks of life. This exposure has broadened my appreciation for the richness of human diversity and instilled a curiosity to learn more about different cultures. It has also fostered an appreciation for the power of storytelling in preserving and sharing cultural heritage. Reading, and specifically engaging with the book "Passing," has been a transformative experience that has broadened my perspective and facilitated personal growth. By immersing myself in the lives of complex characters, I have gained a deeper understanding of the intricacies of racial identity, fostered empathy, and developed a critical lens through which to analyze societal constructs. Reading has expanded my cultural awareness and nurtured my curiosity about the world around me. Ultimately, the act of reading and engaging with literature has played a significant role in my mental progress, encouraging empathy, critical thinking, and a lifelong commitment to learning and understanding others.

In a consumer-driven society that often equates material possessions with happiness, it is an unpopular opinion to assert that money cannot buy happiness. However, I firmly hold this belief, recognizing that true happiness stems from within and cannot be purchased or acquired through material means. In this essay, I will delve into the reasons why I maintain this unpopular opinion, highlighting the importance of intrinsic values, emotional well-being, and the pursuit of meaningful experiences over material wealth. To begin with, the pursuit of happiness through material possessions is often a never-ending cycle. While acquiring material wealth may provide temporary pleasure or satisfaction, it is fleeting and short-lived. The thrill of acquiring the latest gadget or luxury item fades quickly, leaving a void that can only be filled by the pursuit of more possessions. This perpetual cycle creates a sense of discontentment and prevents individuals from finding lasting happiness. Furthermore, relying on external factors such as money and material possessions as a source of happiness places one's well-being in the hands of circumstances beyond their control. Financial wealth is susceptible to fluctuation, and attaching happiness to material abundance leaves individuals vulnerable to feelings of insecurity and anxiety. True happiness, on the other hand, stems from internal sources, such as self-acceptance, gratitude, and nurturing meaningful relationships. I hold this opinion despite its unpopularity because I have witnessed firsthand the limitations of material wealth in providing genuine happiness. I have observed individuals who possess immense wealth but remain unfulfilled, lacking a sense of purpose and contentment. Their pursuit of material possessions and external validation often leaves them feeling empty and disconnected from their authentic selves. Additionally, I base my opinion on psychological research and philosophical insights that support the notion that happiness is not contingent upon material wealth. Studies have consistently shown that once basic needs are met, additional wealth does not significantly contribute to overall well-being. Instead, factors such as strong social connections, a sense of purpose, and personal growth are found to be crucial components of long-term happiness. Moreover, my personal experiences have reinforced my belief that happiness transcends materialism. I have found that moments of joy and fulfillment arise from meaningful experiences, such as spending quality time with loved ones, engaging in hobbies and passions, and making a positive impact in the lives of others. These experiences provide a sense of purpose, connection, and fulfillment that cannot be bought with money. In a society driven by consumerism, holding the opinion that money cannot buy happiness allows me to resist the constant pressure to accumulate wealth and possessions as a measure of success. It empowers me to focus on cultivating meaningful relationships, personal growth, and experiences that bring genuine joy and fulfillment. While it is an unpopular opinion in a materialistic society, I firmly believe that money cannot buy happiness. True happiness resides within and is nurtured through intrinsic values, meaningful experiences, and emotional well-being. By recognizing the limitations of material wealth, I can prioritize personal growth, nurturing relationships, and pursuing experiences that bring lasting fulfillment. Holding this opinion allows me to challenge societal norms and strive for a more authentic, purpose-driven life, where happiness is found in the richness of experiences and the connections we foster with ourselves and others.

Moreover, volunteering at the nursing home has deepened my understanding of the importance of intergenerational connections. Spending time with the residents has shown me the value of bridging generational gaps and the positive impact it can have on both sides. Engaging in activities, and conversations, and even simply listening to the stories of the residents has enriched my own life and broadened my perspective. It has highlighted the importance of fostering inclusivity and respect for people of all ages. This experience has influenced me to continue advocating for the rights and well-being of older adults and has sparked a desire to pursue a career in gerontology or related fields. Volunteering at the nursing home has shaped me into a more compassionate, understanding, and patient individual, and I am grateful for the profound impact it has had on my personal development. Volunteering and participating in community service have transformed my perspective on humanity, cultivating empathy, compassion, and a deep sense of responsibility within me. These experiences have played a pivotal role in shaping my future ambitions and career choice. By engaging directly with diverse communities, challenging stereotypes, and witnessing the power of collective action, I have been inspired to pursue a career in social work and dedicate my life to making a positive impact. Volunteering has not only influenced my professional aspirations but has also instilled in me a lifelong commitment to service, ensuring that I continue to contribute to the betterment of humanity in all aspects of my life.

It is 6 second left in the game. The game is tied 63-63. My mind was racing, my body was tingling, and everything was moving so fast. I'm at the foul line and at that very moment I knew that all eyes were on me. I took a deep breath, because I knew that what happens next is depended upon whether or not I make the shot. I cleared my mind and the whole gym got quiet. I raised the ball up without hesitation. I let it fly like a bird on a plane. The silenced broke with cheers!

From the very first moment I came the wound and laid eyes on this beautiful woman, who I will soon be calling "mommy", I knew she was the one. There is not one day that goes by that I forget to tell my mom, "I love you." There is no doubt that she is a key ingredient in my life. My mom fills a role in my life that no one else can. I am thankful to have her in my life, because she has helped me become the person I am today. From day one she has always been my biggest supporter. She has been there for me during my worst times. My mom is like a guidance counselor to me. I can go to her about anything, and she will always tell me what's best. I can not remember one moment where my mom told me that I could not do something. For example, when I was first learning how to ride a bike and I felt that I could not do it, she was there to pick me up and encourage me. Throughout my life she has taught me that no matter how challenging life get, always remember who I am and where I came from. She has instilled good values in my life that no other person has. I can honestly say, she is one of the few people who will always love me for me. Therefore, I thank my mom for being my hero, teacher, and a loving mom all in one. Without her my life would be incomplete.
