I plan to pursue a career in Public Health because I want to address the inequalities in the healthcare system and help those in need. Growing up, I have seen the struggles families face trying to get the treatment they need and being denied access to it, particularly immigrants who are often overlooked. By pursuing this career, I can help improve the well-being of many people in the health systems who have faced similar challenges.
As a first-generation soon-to-be college student, I have faced many significant challenges living in a low-income, Hispanic household. However, the most significant challenge I have faced was growing up in a household with parents in a toxic relationship. At a young age, I was placed in a difficult situation, constantly under pressure and having to choose sides, which no child should have to endure. This difficult environment has caused me to be anxious or nervous under pressure or certain circumstances which has affected my academic performance. Circumstances include making big decisions or even small matters like presenting in class. This challenge has also affected my workspace which significantly affected my academic performance and inability to complete my assignments.
I have always struggled with procrastination, and because I am surrounded by a loud or chaotic environment, I am unable to complete my work. Constantly pushing back my responsibilities and avoiding completing them to not cause more stress on myself. I slowly realized that it would only make the situation much worse. Over time I have learned to distance myself and not let their problems affect me and my mental health anymore. I have learned to cope with it by ignoring them or leaving matters into their own hands because it is their problem. With the support of my closest cousins, and my siblings, who have helped me overcome this challenge. Through this, I have gotten better under pressure and slowly have been gaining my confidence back. This experience has taught me that we must always learn to communicate and not involve others who should not be involved. Although I am still facing the same challenges, I have learned to not let it affect my academic performance and personal growth over time. To also take advantage of the resources given in my school such as tutoring or going to other quieter places to complete my work. This experience has helped me to be more resilient and adapt new qualities that will help me in the future including in college. I now approach things with a better mindset and knowing no matter how big the problem is, I can and will overcome anything.
