Bio

I grew up afraid of the way I spoke, loved, and learned. A deficiency of resources to navigate a speech impediment and concealed sexual identity left me feeling alone and out of place, a daffodil in my southern town’s field of bluebonnets. I now study computer science and music in pursuit of creating a kinder, more inclusive world that is designed for all. My goal is to become a software engineer and implement humane design in digital products that support the field of speech-language pathology, LGBTQ community, and learning experiences of students. I would like to build free speech therapy resources for those who cannot afford private sessions. I envision social networks that give LGBTQ users the opportunity to find safer, more meaningful relationships. As a tangible extension of thoughtful design, I am also interested in engineering ergonomic technologies that protect students’ physical well-being. As a Filipino American, I aspire to achieve a global impact, helping to reverse the education crisis in the Philippines through infrastructural and digital growth.

    “The Office” Obsessed! Fan Scholarship
In "The Office," where the ordinary takes center stage, one character resonates with the very core of my being: Pam Beesly. Her journey from the confines of a reception desk to the pursuit of her artistic dreams provides a resonant echo of my own quest for self-discovery and self-expression. In a delicate dance between reality and fiction, "The Office" has not only shaped my sense of humor and understanding of workplace dynamics but has also inspired my path towards authenticity and purpose. The symphony of Pam Beesly's evolution as portrayed in "The Office" harmonizes with the cadence of my own life. Growing up, I found myself ensnared within the framework of an identity that did not belong to me. My family's vision for my future sketched a path veering toward conventional careers such as business analytics or accounting, leaving me feeling entrapped, much as Pam did behind her reception desk. Yet, like Pam, there was a yearning within me that transcended the mundane routine of everyday existence. My passion lay in the realm of creativity and innovation, a calling opposed to the path I was expected to tread. It was an awakening, a realization that life held more profound dimensions yet to be explored. Today, I stand poised on the precipice of an artistic journey within the tech industry. My aspiration as a software developer is to craft visionary and accessible tools, dedicated to empowering marginalized communities, with a particular focus on the fields of speech-language pathology and the LGBTQ+ community. I, like Pam, have chosen to walk a path less traveled, to break the shackles of societal expectations, and to invest my creative spirit into the very heart of technology. One of the invaluable lessons that "The Office" has imparted is the ability to discern beauty in the mundane, to extract the extraordinary from the ordinary. The show artfully portrays the humor and humanity inherent in the most pedestrian aspects of office life, inviting us to find laughter in the quirks and absurdities of the workplace. This unique perspective has profoundly influenced my approach to designing software applications. I firmly believe that by uncovering beauty in simplicity and everyday interactions, I can breathe life into intuitive and user-friendly tools that genuinely enrich and empower the lives of those I aim to serve. Ultimately, "The Office" transcends mere entertainment; it has become a source of profound inspiration and a mirror reflecting my personal odyssey. Through the prism of Pam Beesly's character, I have learned the art of liberation from societal expectations and the pursuit of authentic passions. Mirroring Pam, my goal is to discover the splendor in the ordinary, employing creativity to make a tangible, positive impact on the world. "The Office" has left an indelible imprint on my sense of humor and my comprehension of workplace dynamics, guiding me toward a vocation where I can unabashedly be myself and contribute meaningfully to the lives of others.
Chris Jackson Computer Science Education Scholarship
As a child, communication was my Everest, an obstacle that my shy demeanor and speech impediment made nearly insurmountable. The frustration of not being able to communicate compounded my insecurities, a cycle that seemed never-ending. Speech therapy, though well-intentioned, felt tedious, time-consuming, and discouraging. Little did I know, my path to empowerment would be paved with lines of code, leading me to discover the world of computer science and its possibilities. High school introduced me to the course that would forever change my life: Introduction to Information Technology. Initially, I saw it as a mere elective, but it was within those morning lectures that I found a language through which I could truly speak. Coding became my refuge, a realm where words flowed effortlessly from my fingers, and ideas turned into tangible creations. For the first time, my speech impediment was not a barrier; it was irrelevant in the realm of algorithms and syntax. The realization struck me like Cupid’s arrow to the heart: I could transform my passion for coding into a vehicle for change in the field of speech therapy. My dream was born—to become a software engineer and mobile app developer, designing applications that would revolutionize speech therapy practices. I envisioned apps that were engaging, accessible, and thoughtfully designed, providing a bridge between therapists and their young patients. Through gamification, interactive exercises, and personalized feedback, these apps would empower children like me to conquer their speech impediments while feeling supported and encouraged. My ultimate goal is to harness the power of technology and bring kindness into the world. The field of speech-language pathology can transform, and I am committed to being at the forefront of this change. The impact of such innovative tools goes beyond individual therapy sessions; they have the potential to reshape lives, fostering confidence, communication, and self-assuredness. My metamorphosis from a silent, insecure child to a confident, passionate advocate for change is a reflection of my resilience and determination. The challenges I faced in my communication journey have honed my perseverance and fueled my desire to create lasting impact. With this scholarship, I would be empowered to pursue my dreams without the constraints of financial limitations, enabling me to focus wholeheartedly on my studies and projects. With unwavering determination, I dream of creating applications that will touch the lives of countless individuals. I am ready to embrace this challenge, armed with my passion for coding, empathy for those who struggle, and commitment to a kinder world. This scholarship would not only be an investment in my education but also in a future where communication barriers are shattered and voices are set free.
    Disney Super Fan Scholarship
As I traverse the enchanting world of Disney, my heart resonates with an unexpected fascination: the villains. While many are drawn to the charm of princesses and heroes, my favorite aspect of Disney lies in its portrayal of the villains, who serve as powerful conduits for empathy and personal growth. To me, they are more than just antagonists; they are intricate characters that mirror the complexities of humanity, inviting us to find good in the places we least expect. My affinity for Disney's villains stems from their ability to challenge preconceived notions of "good" and "evil." They teach us that no one is truly defined by a single label. Take, for instance, Captain Hook from "Peter Pan." His seething anger is rooted in tragedy—the loss of his hand, severed by none other than Peter Pan himself. Despite his physical disability, Captain Hook emerges as a leader, commanding a crew of pirates and seeking his own form of justice. His character serves as a poignant reminder that adversity does not have to define us; we have the power to rise above our circumstances. Similarly, Maleficent from "Sleeping Beauty" unveils the intricate layers of villainy. Her malevolent actions are driven by a feeling of exclusion, a wound inflicted when she was not invited to Princess Aurora's christening. This portrayal highlights the very human experience of being ostracized and feeling "othered." Through Maleficent's narrative, we are prompted to reevaluate our judgments and delve deeper into the motivations behind people's actions. Her story is a testament to the significance of empathy and understanding, even when faced with seemingly irredeemable characters. As I reflect on the stories of these villains, I am reminded that they are products of their circumstances. Their choices are influenced by events that have shaped their perspectives, leading them down a path of darkness. This realization has played a pivotal role in shaping my aspirations and fueling my determination to create a kinder, more equitable world. My passion for software engineering has provided me with a platform to manifest my vision. I aspire to design applications that serve as invaluable resources for individuals facing adversity, such as those with speech disorders and the LGBTQ+ community. Drawing inspiration from the villains of Disney, I am driven to create tools that empower individuals to overcome obstacles, break down barriers, and connect with others in meaningful ways. I aim to provide a voice for those who may have felt marginalized and unheard. My own experiences of feeling isolated during my childhood have ignited a desire to build a sense of community through technology. I envision software applications that foster inclusivity and understanding, offering a safe space for individuals to express themselves authentically. By harnessing the power of technology, I hope to create a world where no one has to perceive themselves as a villain or bear the weight of societal judgment. Ultimately, my favorite aspect of Disney—its villains—has led me on a transformative quest to promote empathy and human goodness. Through the captivating narratives of characters like Captain Hook and Maleficent, I have learned that compassion has the potential to reveal the hidden complexities within each individual. As I pursue a career in software engineering, these characters have instilled in me a determination to forge a more inclusive world. With spirited dedication, I am committed to leveraging technology to empower and uplift those who have felt silenced, helping them find their voice and rewrite their narratives, just as Disney’s villains have done for me.
    Filipino-American Scholarship
My Filipino-American heritage has been a powerful force in shaping my purpose in life, inspiring me to make a meaningful impact both technologically and musically. Throughout my childhood, I was immersed in a culture that exuded kindness and empathy. Observing my Lola's selfless acts, from her charitable donations in church to her tireless efforts in sending aid to the less fortunate in the Philippines, left an indelible mark on my values. As I’ve grown up, these experiences have ignited a desire to channel this compassion through the realm of technology. I plan to embark on a path of software engineering with the goal of creating innovative and accessible learning tools that can transform education on a global scale. The stark technology gap in the Philippines strikes a chord with me, particularly in its detrimental effect on students. I am steadfastly committed to narrowing this divide, ensuring that all students, regardless of their background, have equal access to quality education through the power of technology. My musical journey, cultivated through familial piano lessons and spirited karaoke sessions, has also contributed to my purpose. The joy that music brought to our gatherings, transcending language barriers and forging connections, instilled in me a drive to create my own compositions. I aspire to craft melodies that resonate with people on a profound level, invoking emotions and fostering a sense of unity. In unison, my dual passions for technology and music have led me to a resounding purpose: to uplift and empower others. By leveraging software engineering, I aim to not only bridge educational gaps but also ignite curiosity and passion for learning among underserved communities. Through music, I endeavor to spread positivity and connect with diverse audiences, cultivating a shared sense of happiness and harmony. My Filipino-American identity has molded me into a compassionate, ambitious individual with a profound sense of responsibility. It has instilled in me the belief that my actions can ripple outward, touching lives near and far. With the benevolent spirit of my Lola as my guiding light, I am determined to weave together technology and music, catalyzing transformative change and leaving an enduring legacy of kindness, empathy, and progress.
Harry Potter and the Sorting Hat Scholarship
In the heart of the mystical Hogwarts Castle, amidst the enchanting aura of the Great Hall, sat a curious young boy named Jake. The atmosphere crackled with anticipation as the Sorting Ceremony approached. Candlelight danced upon the ancient walls, and a hush fell over the gathered students, their eyes fixed on the illustrious Sorting Hat. Jake's heart fluttered with a blend of excitement and trepidation. What destiny awaited him? What house would become his second home, defining his path through these halls of magic? As the Sorting Hat was gently lowered onto his head, a surge of energy enveloped him, and he felt as if his very soul were laid bare before the ancient artifact. In a wondrous, kaleidoscopic flash, the Sorting Hat delved into Jake's life, revealing scenes of compassion, friendship, and perseverance that spoke volumes of his character. First, it glimpsed Jake beside his beloved Lola (grandmother), their hands working in harmony as they packed boxes brimming with essentials bound for the distant shores of the Philippines. In those moments, the young boy learned the profound lesson of kindness, imprinted in his heart by Lola's selfless act of aiding those an ocean away. Next, the Sorting Hat unveiled a scene of isolation and vulnerability. Jake, sitting alone at lunch, felt the weight of judgmental gazes after revealing his true self. But then, a transformative wave of acceptance washed over him as his friends gathered around, declaring their unwavering support. In that instant, Jake pledged to create a world as inclusive and welcoming as the refuge his friends had given him. The Sorting Hat's journey through Jake's life continued, revealing the trials he faced during his battle with rhotacism. The arduous years of speech therapy demonstrated his steady patience, dedication, and tenacity. As he eventually learned to speak with confidence, Jake's spirit only grew stronger, a testament to his resilience and determination. Finally, as the Sorting Hat pieced together the fragments of Jake's story, it announced with a resounding voice, "HUFFLEPUFF!" A radiant smile graced Jake's lips as he donned the house colors that symbolized loyalty, hard work, patience, and fair play. It was a perfect match, a reflection of the myriad qualities that defined him. Jake's adventure was far from over; his aspirations soared beyond the enchanted halls of Hogwarts. Inspired by his past, he envisioned a future as a software engineer, crafting innovative and accessible learning technologies to uplift education in the Philippines. His dreams further encompassed creating applications that offered a stronger sense of belonging and community for LGBTQ+ youth, a space where every individual could thrive. But that wasn't all—Jake's vision extended to the realm of speech-language pathology, where his expertise would lead to groundbreaking applications that tailored strategies for communication disorders. He aspired to give voice to those who struggled to be heard, embodying the very essence of Hufflepuff values in his commitment to aiding others. As the Sorting Hat's proclamation echoed through the Great Hall, Jake's spirit flew as high as the candles above his head. He was a Hufflepuff, a beacon of kindness, determination, and inclusivity. His path was clear, his purpose resolute. With each step, he would honor his past, uplift others, and bring his magical touch to the world, ensuring that every corner of the globe gleamed a bit brighter because of him.
