Bio

Growing up in a community with limited mental health services, I witnessed firsthand the struggles faced by those in need, including my own family. These experiences ignited my passion to impact the mental health and well-being of individuals and families in marginalized communities. My goal is to provide compassionate, effective counseling and advocate for mental health accessibility for all, ensuring everyone has the support needed to overcome challenges and lead fulfilling lives. As a first-generation Latina, I understand the challenges of navigating life without adequate mental health support. My passion lies in bridging the gap in services for Spanish-speaking communities, believing it’s crucial for individuals to connect with someone who understands their language and culture. This drives my commitment to staying updated on the latest research and best practices in mental health counseling. I am dedicated to helping families navigate mental health challenges and ensuring children and adolescents receive the support they need during critical developmental stages. My journey is defined by resilience, empathy, and commitment. As a graduate student and mental health intake coordinator, I have developed strong skills in building trust and understanding the unique needs of children and adolescents. Despite challenges, I continually educate myself and apply new skills to better serve families. My hands-on experience and academic background equip me to provide holistic, client-centered support, making me a dedicated and effective mental health counselor.

Childhelp β€” Mental Health Intake Coordinator

      Robert Lawyer Memorial Scholarship
As a first-generation Latina student, my academic path and future goals have been powerfully shaped by my background. However, being a student has presented challenges as I navigate this journey without the support and guidance of family members who have yet to experience the challenges. Unlike many of my peers, I couldn't turn to my parents for advice or understanding, as they were unfamiliar with the complexities of education. With only 7% percentage of Latina therapists in the mental health field, finding someone who could relate to my unique struggles seemed like an uphill battle. Despite my hurdles, I draw strength from reflecting on my parents' hardships. They courageously left their families behind in pursuit of opportunities for their children in a land where they were youngβ€”a daunting task in itself. Their bravery in confronting the unknown. Their resilience serves as beacons of inspiration for me. If they could overcome obstacles, then surely, I can too. This realization has fueled my determination to pursue a career in mental healthβ€”a field often misunderstood within my community. My journey has been far from sailing. I have grappled with self-doubt, imposter syndrome, and adversity along the way. Losing my mother to cancer at 19 was a heartbreaking blow. Nevertheless, these experiences have only reaffirmed the significance of my chosen path. I understand the challenges faced by my family, friends, and community. It is clear that there is a shortage of therapists who can truly connect with and understand their needs. This realization fuels my passion and dedication to pursuing a career in mental health. In my role as a health intake coordinator, it is a privilege to assist families from different backgrounds. This is not a job for meβ€”it is a calling. Juggling work studies and personal commitments has taught me lessons in resilience and flexibility. These qualities not only improve my performance but also prepare me for the responsibilities of working in mental health and as a future therapist. Showing empathy towards clients, respecting their backgrounds, and delivering care are fundamental values that guide my professional approach. Being a non-traditional student has exposed me to different viewpoints and deepened my understanding of mental health challenges. Interacting with classmates from different backgrounds has broadened my perspective on therapy techniques and reinforced the importance of inclusivity in mental health services. Looking ahead at my experiences as a non-traditional student influences my future aspirations. I am dedicated to promoting mental health awareness and access within marginalized communities. My goal is to become a therapist who provides culturally sensitive support. Furthermore, I want to participate in research and community engagement efforts that tackle the obstacles hindering access to mental health care. To sum up, my experience as a non-traditional student has influenced my academic path and future goals. The obstacles I've encountered have bolstered my determination and strengthened my dedication to effecting change in the mental health sector. By drawing on my background, I aspire to create opportunities for generations of Latina students and mental health professionals, ensuring that no one goes through this journey alone.

      Arnetha V. Bishop Memorial Scholarship
I am a first-generation college student, proudly embracing my Latina heritage, and my journey towards becoming a mental health professional is deeply interwoven with my personal experiences and cultural background. Growing up, mental health was a taboo subject in my community, and the glaring lack of resources for underserved, Spanish-speaking populations was unmistakable. These early observations shaped my resolve to bring change, guiding me towards a career where I could make a tangible difference. My life has been marked by significant challenges, including the loss of my mother to cancer at the age of 19 and enduring personal abuse. During these turbulent times, I lacked what I now understand was essential – access to mental health support. This absence of support in my moments of need has been a driving force in my passion to ensure that others do not face similar struggles alone. My experiences have instilled in me a profound empathy for those grappling with mental health issues, particularly within marginalized communities where such challenges are often compounded by cultural stigmas and systemic barriers. I am committed to not only providing mental health services but doing so in a way that respects and incorporates the cultural and linguistic needs of these communities. Offering counseling and support in Spanish, I aim to bridge the language barrier that often prevents many in the Latino community from seeking and receiving help. My activism and career aspirations are deeply influenced by my belief that mental health care is a fundamental right, not a privilege. I envision a future where mental health services are accessible, affordable, and culturally sensitive, especially for those who have historically been marginalized. My goal is to be an advocate for change, both within the mental health field and in broader societal contexts, challenging the stigmas associated with mental health, especially in the Latino community. Education plays a crucial role in my vision. By educating my community about mental health, I aim to dismantle the taboos and misconceptions that often prevent people from seeking help. I believe that knowledge is empowering, and by providing resources and information, I can help individuals understand their mental health better and encourage them to take proactive steps towards healing and wellbeing. In my professional capacity, I plan to focus on trauma-informed care, recognizing that many individuals within marginalized communities have experienced traumas, whether personal, systemic, or cultural. My approach will be one of understanding, compassion, and empowerment, assisting individuals in not just overcoming their challenges but also in recognizing and harnessing their inner strengths. Ultimately, my journey is about more than personal accomplishment; it’s about lighting a path for others. By sharing my story and the lessons I’ve learned, I hope to inspire others within my community to pursue their dreams, regardless of the obstacles they face. My aim is to be a living testament to the fact that with the right support and resilience, healing is possible, and dreams are attainable. In conclusion, my personal experiences with mental health have shaped my beliefs, fueled my activism, and defined my career aspirations. As I forge ahead in my academic and professional journey, my focus remains steadfast on making a positive impact within marginalized communities, providing mental health services that are accessible, culturally relevant, and delivered in the language that resonates with those I serve. My mission is to uplift, educate, and heal, empowering others to pursue their dreams as I continue to chase mine.
