NomineeBio
My name is Jacob Wyatt Clark and I'm a Freshman at Napa Valley College (CA), I plan on doing two years before transferring to university. I am majoring in Nursing and plan on being a RN or Nurse Practitioner. I love science and mathematics; I am also a first-time college student in my nuclear family and it’s my mission to be an example for my younger siblings. I am Chilean and proud of my South American heritage. I am also a child victim witness as I witnessed my mother get hit by a drunk driver at the age of 4 and it resulted in her being a bilateral amputee, but it’s experiences like that who made me the determined person I am today.

Over the past seventeen years I've lived, I've had to overcome many challenges though the fact I have overcame them does not mean I will ever forget them. On Feb 3, 2008 Lilian Janet Zuniga Clark after securing her sons Samuel Blaine Clark (6), and Jacob Wyatt Clark (4) in the backseat of her car. A man by the name of Francisco Pacheco (24) released on felony bail of DUI plowed into the back of Lilian's car. Francisco Pacheco was extremely intoxicated during this incident driving at a speed of 50 miles-per-hour, and in the process crushed Lilian into the back bumper of the car, 60 of her bones were crushed drastically so badly that they were beyond repair, she then would become a bilateral amputee as the doctors were forced to have an emergency amputation of both legs. Her sons would feel the impact of the car being hit as they were in the back seat and hear the panic of voices and screams, the result would be reminded to them in their everyday lives.
My name is Jacob Wyatt Clark, and I can still remember the blood surrounding the car on that day. I remember being so confused and was rushed into the house as neighbors chased after the man who did it and when I went later to see my mother in the hospital, she no longer had legs, she was hooked up on fluids and medicine to the point I didn’t even recognize her I can remember as a 4-year-old seeing my mother and asking my dad where she was because I simply didn’t recognize her. The next thirteen years we have overcame this together as a family, even though my parents were divorced shortly before this incident it brought us together again. My mother is the strongest person I know born and raised in Chile despite her accident her only concerns were my brother and I and so we owed it to be the best we could for her the rest of her life. Over the past 13 years we have attempted to get her back into prosthetic's through rehab, but she is not able to due to the hurt on the remaining parts of her limbs, so we decided to make her time at home the best time for her ever! My brother and I visit my mother every day, we help her around the home, cook together, watch movies, sing and I drive her around to all her favorite places she hasn’t seen for the last 12 years. Although she never overcame the ability to use prosthetic's, she, no we have overcome the sadness, and replaced it with happiness full of life. We have decided to be grateful that she is alive and overcome our grief and instead have become stronger, dedicating these remaining years to live a full happy life.
The lesson that I've learned, are so important to how I've decided to live my everyday life for the rest of my life. There are so many different takes from it, but the two main ones are crystal clear to me. One is to always cherish life no matter the circumstances, because you never know what will happen and it’s a sad, but an important reality to know is that you don’t have control over things like this and you can never blame yourself just keep your head up and keep moving. The biggest lesson is despite anything that has happened to you, me, or anyone else you can make the decision to move forward and remain strong. Nothing is holding you back from being happy, if my mom can remain happy and thankful that she is alive today despite losing both her legs. Then nothing should stop you from being happy and achieving what you want to do in your life!
