WinnerBio
I'm an international student with four nationalities: American-French-Uruguayan-Algerian. I was born in Paris, France, and lived in six countries (France, USA, Morocco, Spain, UK, and Kenya). My multicultural experiences and identity have shaped a unique perspective that has propelled me forward in my academic studies at Stanford University. I am a low-income student with a full ride. I am currently focusing my studies on International Development to gather the skill set to foster social and economic growth in developing countries – namely in Algeria – where half of my family is from, and where my dad was unjustly imprisoned for his work as an political leader to its dictatorial regime. 2 years ago, I studied abroad at the University of Oxford where I continued my studies in International Development.
I have volunteered and worked for many non-profits during my collegiate years – many of which deal with social issues like political polarization. Such non-profits include America Indivisible, where I currently work to empower Muslim leaders in the US government. Another is Our National Conversation, a non-partisan news aggregator and platform that promotes debate that bridges party lines. Last summer, I went to work as a policy consultant in Nairobi, Kenya, to help refugees and solve critical policy issues in Africa. I traveled across 17 countries in 3 months, 13 of them in Africa. I am currently a Master's student in Public Policy at Stanford.
I love to travel and go on adventures. My fun fact is I've completed the world's highest tandem skydive at 18,000 feet!

Janean D. Watkins Overcoming Adversity Scholarship
My story is one of resilience, adaptability, and the relentless pursuit of my dreams, shaped by a rich tapestry of experiences and challenges. Born into a multicultural family, I navigated the complexities of four national identities: American, Algerian, Uruguayan, and French. My upbringing, split across six countries, was both a privilege and a profound challenge. This unique background instilled in me a deep appreciation for diverse cultures and perspectives but also exposed me to the realities of prejudice, financial instability, and the struggle to belong.
From a young age, I grappled with economic hardship. Witnessing my family's relentless effort to provide despite the odds sowed the seeds of determination and resilience within me. Education became my refuge and my beacon of hope. I was determined to leverage it not only as a means of personal advancement but also as a tool to contribute to society meaningfully.
Adversity struck a defining blow during my high school and college years when my father was incarcerated due to his political activism in Algeria. The experience was both harrowing and enlightening. It taught me the value of courage and the importance of standing up for one's beliefs, even in the face of formidable challenges. This period of my life was instrumental in shaping my interest in economics and public policy. I saw these fields as avenues through which I could address systemic injustices and contribute to economic and social reform.
My journey to Stanford as an Economics major was marked by a series of obstacles, each overcoming fueling my resolve to succeed. As a FLI (First-Generation Low-Income) student, I encountered the daunting challenge of navigating an unfamiliar academic and social landscape. Yet, these experiences honed my ability to adapt, innovate, and persevere. They taught me the value of community, mentorship, and the power of lending a voice to the underrepresented.
During my time at Stanford, I have sought to merge my academic pursuits with practical experiences. I tutored students in subjects ranging from English to financial literacy, worked with refugees to equip them with skills for societal reintegration, and engaged in consulting projects aimed at fostering sustainable business practices. These experiences underscored the importance of empathy, strategic thinking, and the ability to translate complex concepts into actionable solutions.
My goals are a reflection of my journey: to harness the power of economics and public policy in crafting equitable and innovative solutions to global challenges. I aspire to contribute to the development of policies that bridge socioeconomic divides, foster sustainable economic growth, and promote inclusive governance. Ultimately, my dream is to establish a nonprofit that addresses educational inequities, providing resources and support to underprivileged students worldwide.
The adversity I have faced has been a catalyst for growth, driving me to pursue my goals with tenacity and a deep sense of purpose. It has imbued me with resilience, empathy, and a global perspective that informs my approach to problem-solving. In confronting challenges, I have learned that adversity is not an obstacle to success but a foundation upon which to build a future that reflects one's values and aspirations.

Picture a bicycle wheel with unequal spokes, some long, some short. Each spin teeters unevenly, the shorter spokes straining under pressure, the longer ones barely bending. Now, transpose this image to our society, where the spokes represent different population segments. Some have been granted longer, stronger spokes - more resources, opportunities, and privileges - while others, the disadvantaged, have been shortchanged. Such a structure is fragile – and doomed to fail.
Suppose we liken the societal change we seek to the mechanics of the bicycle wheel. In that case, it becomes clear that adjusting the length of the spokes - providing resources where they are lacking - is a logical and necessary step. But let's also consider the hub of the wheel, the central point that connects all the spokes. If the hub represents societal structures and systems, it, too, needs recalibration to ensure an even distribution of support to all the spokes.
To further elucidate my point, let us take a detour into a realm I have academically pursued in my undergraduate years at Stanford: the field of economics. In economics, there's a concept known as Pareto efficiency, a state of resource allocation where it is impossible to make one individual better off without making at least one individual worse off. Our society is far from Pareto efficient. The rich are getting richer, while the disadvantaged continue to suffer. However, we can move closer to this ideal state by reallocating resources without making the privileged worse off. We can bridge the wealth gap, improve access to education, and create a society where success is not determined by the length of one's spoke but by the content of one's character.
In a more equitable society, the disadvantaged wouldn't just be given resources; they'd be provided with tools to build their own resources. Education is a prime example of such a tool. Providing access to quality education for the disadvantaged can alter the trajectory of their lives, allowing them to break free from the cycle of poverty and disadvantage. Let us not simply give a man a fish. We must not just throw resources at the problem but fundamentally change how we respond by empowering the disadvantaged.
Change is not only necessary, but it is also inevitable. The wheel of society must adjust to the evolving needs of its diverse spokes. As we strive for a more balanced spin, we must remember that the process of change is as necessary as the change itself. Therefore, we must move forward with empathy, understanding, and a commitment to justice.
The wheel will wobble as we reshape the spokes and recalibrate the hub. It will teeter on the edge of the old and the new, the familiar and the unknown. But once the transformation is complete, the wheel will spin with newfound balance and grace, carrying us toward a more equitable future.
Eco-Warrior Scholarship
The sun casts an eerie orange glow through the haze of smoke as I bike to campus with my mask on. The daily ritual of embracing sustainable living through my sturdy, eco-friendly, two-wheeler turned into a dangerous journey through the fire-filled Californian outdoors. My journey towards a greener lifestyle began during the California wildfires of 2020. This personal experience transformed the knowledge I had gained while studying climate change in high school and college into a more powerful personal anecdote. Seeing the burning trees and black smoke piercing the firey sky sparked an insatiable desire to minimize my carbon footprint and contribute positively to the world. The metamorphosis into a sustainability advocate has been an adventure marked by a series of eco-conscious choices, a profound appreciation for the interconnectedness of all living beings, and my transformative work experience at BeckmanReady shortly after the wildfires.
BeckmanReady helps Californians prepare for and deal with natural disasters such as wildfires and earthquakes. Working at this startup has significantly influenced my commitment to sustainable living, showing me climate change's direct and often devastating consequences. My time at BeckmanReady has honed my professional skills and inspired me to be a catalyst for change within my own life and community. Bearing witness to the real-life impacts of disasters fueled by climate change has made the urgency of adopting a more sustainable lifestyle all the more evident. The knowledge and experiences gained at BeckmanReady have motivated me to play a proactive role in mitigating the effects of climate change through personal choices.
My quest for a sustainable lifestyle begins in the kitchen, where I have adopted a plant-based diet. By forgoing meat and dairy products, I aim to reduce the environmental toll of industrial animal agriculture. Each meal becomes a celebration of Earth's bounty, as I savor the flavors of locally sourced fruits and vegetables, supporting my community's farmers and minimizing the emissions from transporting food long distances. The ritual of composting kitchen scraps breathes new life into the earth, reducing waste and nourishing the soil for future harvests.
In the realm of transportation, I've traded the gas-guzzling automobile for the humble bicycle, a trusty steed that carries me to and fro without a whisper of pollution. Each pedal stroke fuels not only my body but also my commitment to reducing greenhouse gas emissions. When distances are too vast for my bike, public transportation becomes my chariot, proving that the journey can be just as exhilarating as the destination, especially when shared with like-minded passengers.
Beyond diet and transportation, my pursuit of sustainability seeps into my consumption habits. Like a treasure hunter, I scour thrift stores and flea markets for pre-loved gems, giving new life to discarded items and reducing the demand for resource-intensive manufacturing. My wardrobe, a tapestry of eclectic styles, tells a story of reimagined potential and the beauty of second chances. In my home, energy-efficient appliances and LED bulbs illuminate a brighter future, while low-flow fixtures conserve precious water.
Driven by my work at BeckmanReady and my academic exposure to climate change, I am motivated to make sustainable choices that contribute to a healthier planet. Our planet, a living, breathing entity, depends on the choices we make and the values we uphold. By living sustainably and minimizing my carbon footprint, I hope to contribute to a legacy of environmental stewardship and remind others that we are all part of this beautifully interconnected web of life. As we face the consequences of climate change, embracing sustainable living is a responsibility and an opportunity to redefine our relationship with the environment and future generations.
@normandiealise #GenWealth Scholarship
Generational wealth, to me, is more than just money; it encompasses the values, knowledge, and financial habits that contribute to a family's continued prosperity and well-being. Generational wealth serves as a foundation for future generations, offering them a sense of stability and financial security as they navigate the complexities of life. By generating generational wealth, I aim to not only ensure the financial comfort of my descendants but also instill a legacy of sound financial planning and responsible wealth management.
Achieving generational wealth is a long-term process that requires foresight, discipline, and strategic planning. My approach to building generational wealth revolves around four key pillars: education, investment, entrepreneurship, and philanthropy.
Firstly, education serves as the bedrock of generational wealth. It equips individuals with the knowledge and skills necessary to navigate the rapidly evolving global economy. As an economics undergraduate about to start a master's program in public policy administration, I recognize the immense value of education in shaping my own understanding of finance and wealth management. To lay the groundwork for generational wealth, I plan to invest in the education of my children and future generations, emphasizing the importance of financial literacy and instilling a passion for lifelong learning.
Secondly, investment is a crucial component of wealth accumulation. By strategically investing in diverse assets such as stocks, bonds, real estate, and businesses, I aim to grow my wealth over time. A well-rounded investment portfolio enables me to take advantage of various opportunities while minimizing risk. My background in economics has provided me with the tools to make informed investment decisions and to remain adaptable in an ever-changing economic landscape.
Entrepreneurship represents another avenue for wealth creation. As an aspiring entrepreneur, I plan to leverage my knowledge and skills to establish and grow businesses that not only generate income but also create employment opportunities and contribute to the overall economic growth of my community. By cultivating a spirit of innovation and enterprise, I hope to inspire future generations to pursue their entrepreneurial passions and continue the legacy of wealth creation.
Lastly, philanthropy plays a pivotal role in my vision of generational wealth. I believe that wealth is most meaningful when it is used to uplift and empower others. Through philanthropic endeavors, I seek to give back to my community and create a lasting impact. By involving my family in these efforts, I aim to instill a sense of social responsibility and empathy in future generations, reinforcing the notion that wealth should be used for the greater good.
In conclusion, generational wealth, to me, signifies the enduring legacy of financial security and stability that can be passed down through generations. By focusing on education, investment, entrepreneurship, and philanthropy, I aim to build a strong foundation of wealth that benefits not only my family but also the broader community. As I navigate my journey toward achieving generational wealth, I am committed to sharing the knowledge and values that I have acquired with those around me, ensuring that the legacy of prosperity continues for generations to come.

The song's structure is cleverly crafted, with verses and choruses seamlessly woven together. The hook features a soaring melody that complements the introspective lyrics, creating a sense of yearning and urgency. The bridge, with its change in tempo and tone, adds a layer of complexity to the track, highlighting Taylor's versatility as a songwriter and performer.
My studies as a music minor give me a great admiration for "I Wish You Would." I feel it's an exemplary track due to its perfect blend of captivating melodies, emotive lyrics, and nostalgic production. The song is a testament to Taylor Swift's growth as an artist, showcasing her willingness to experiment with different styles and sounds. Martha Mitchell Truth Scholarship
The US Constitution has held a special place in my heart and mind since I've become aware of its existence, embodying the fundamental principles upon which the United States was founded. As an individual with a unique multicultural background, I have been fortunate to witness a diverse array of political and economic systems in different countries, each with its own set of challenges and successes. This exposure has allowed me to appreciate the importance of the Constitution as a guiding force for justice, equality, and civil rights.
My passion for the US Constitution stems from its timeless nature, as it continues to shape the lives of millions of people and provides a framework for a just and democratic society. The Constitution safeguards civil liberties and individual rights, ensuring all citizens can pursue happiness and success regardless of race, religion, or background. Coming from Algerian roots and having a father who is a political prisoner for his anti-corruption activism, I am acutely aware of the significance of these protections in fostering an inclusive and pluralistic society.
The First Amendment, in particular, holds personal resonance for me, as it guarantees the right to freedom of speech, religion, and assembly. I hope to engage in work that promotes such rights in developing countries that struggle to uphold such human rights. Furthermore, the Fourteenth Amendment's Equal Protection Clause has fueled my desire to champion civil rights and bridge cultural divides throughout my life and career.
My personal and professional pursuits showcase my dedication to fighting for such constitutionally-protected civil rights. I actively participated in volunteer work during my undergraduate years studying Economics at Stanford University. I engaged with non-profit organizations such as GovSight and Our National Conversation, which aimed to foster understanding, unity, and equality within American society. These experiences provided me with valuable insights into the complexities of the political system and the importance of promoting civil rights and inclusive dialogue to strengthen our communities.
As I pursue a Master's in Public Policy Administration at UPenn, I plan to continue fighting for civil rights and advocating for marginalized communities both domestically and abroad. My ultimate goal is to work at a think tank, conducting research on behavioral social networks to understand the spread of political polarization and develop policy solutions to reduce division and foster unity in American society. This research will not only help address the pressing issue of polarization, but also contribute to protecting civil rights by promoting understanding and tolerance among diverse groups.
In the long term, I aspire to work as a policy analyst for international organizations such as the World Bank or the State Department, focusing on the North African region. My multicultural and multilingual background and academic and professional experiences will enable me to contribute meaningfully to policy-making and advocacy in this area. By working to promote social cohesion and economic development, I hope to make a lasting impact on civil rights and create a more inclusive and just world.
The US Constitution reminds me of the values I hold dear and the society I strive to help shape. As I continue my journey in public policy and advocacy, I am committed to upholding the principles enshrined in the Constitution and working tirelessly to ensure that civil rights remain a cornerstone of our collective future.

The power of human connection and the resilience of communities in overcoming challenges has inspired me since I became aware of my own identity. As a person of quadruple nationality, my perspective is shaped by my unique multicultural experiences, living in various countries, and witnessing diverse socioeconomic realities. These experiences have made me particularly passionate about building bridges between cultures and working towards reducing societal strife and inequalities. My multicultural identity has driven me to seek opportunities to contribute positively to my community, fostering understanding and unity among people from different backgrounds.
One of the primary factors that inspire me to get involved in my community is the belief that every individual has the potential to make a difference. I have seen firsthand how small acts of kindness, collaboration, and understanding can create a significant impact on the lives of others. This belief in the power of individual actions has motivated me to actively participate in volunteer work and engage with non-profit organizations, striving to make a difference in the communities I have been a part of.
In my undergraduate years, I leveraged my multicultural background to engage with American politics and bridge cultural gaps. I worked with a non-profit organization called GovSight, which aimed to make information about political representatives more accessible to constituents. GovSight empowered citizens to make informed decisions and participate more actively in the political process by simplifying and consolidating information about representatives' biographies, news, and voting records. My involvement in this organization allowed me to contribute to improving political transparency and engagement in the United States.
Another unique experience was my work with Our National Conversation (ONC), a non-partisan start-up that sought to address political polarization in the U.S. ONC provided a crowdsourced platform for policy discussions and solutions, encouraging productive and inclusive dialogue on pressing issues. As the co-head of the Actions Initiative, I was responsible for populating ONC with volunteering and political campaign opportunities, enabling people to actively contribute to change in their constituencies. My work with ONC deepened my understanding of the importance of fostering meaningful dialogue in society and reinforced my commitment to promoting unity and understanding across cultural and political divides.
Beyond my work with non-profits, I have also explored finance and consulting with the goal of uplifting my family's financial situation. Despite the valuable skills and knowledge gained from these internships, I ultimately realized that my true calling was in contributing to communities less valued on a global scale. My experiences in the corporate world reinforced my dedication to reducing societal divisions and fostering cohesion and economic development in underprivileged communities.
Throughout my academic and professional journey, I have consistently sought to influence change in my community by leveraging my unique background and experiences. My passion for community engagement and my dedication to fostering positive change will continue to guide my efforts as I work toward achieving my goals and making a lasting impact on the communities I serve.
