As a first-generation Mexican immigrant, I am extremely proud of my heritage and my family's resilience in the face of adversity. My unyielding passion for neuroscience led me to conduct extensive research on the long-term neuropsychological effects of marijuana usage in adolescents for my IB Extended Essay. This research project allowed me to gain a deeper understanding of the impact of drug usage on the developing brain, and reinforced my commitment to pursuing a degree in neuroscience.
In the fall of 2023, I will be attending Washington State University, where I hope to further develop my skills and knowledge in the field of neuroscience. I am excited to immerse myself in the academic community at WSU, and am committed to achieving my goals.
Community service is a huge part of my life, and I am a proud member of the Wilson Youth Council, a volunteer organization that supports various community events and donation drives. I am also an active member of the National Honor Society and have participated in numerous volunteer events. My time volunteering at the Imagination Station Science and History Museum further reinforced my love for STEM subjects and my desire to pursue a career in this field.
I served as the Junior Class Vice President and successfully organized Prom for my school. I am also an active member of the Kindness Club, Spanish Club, and National Technical Honor Society at my school.
I hope to use the financial support to further my academic and professional goals.

As a Latina woman, I know firsthand the struggles that members of my community face. Growing up in a low-income household in North Carolina, I saw how lack of access to quality healthcare and language barriers could negatively impact the health and well-being of my family and neighbors. My personal journey has been shaped by my own struggles with a neurological disorder, which has given me a unique perspective and the desire to make a positive impact in the field of medicine. These experiences have fueled my passion for pursuing higher education in neuroscience and a career in the healthcare field as a neurosurgical oncologist, with the ultimate goal of giving back to my community.
Through my studies and experiences, I have developed a strong commitment to promoting diversity and inclusion in healthcare. I plan to utilize my education and training to become a healthcare professional who is fluent in both Spanish and American Sign Language (ASL) both of which I hope to study and improve so that I can better communicate with and provide care to patients who may otherwise face language barriers.
Additionally, I am committed to giving back to my community through volunteer work. During my time at the local elementary school as a teacher assistant in a Spanish immersion program, I saw firsthand the impact that education and mentorship can have on the next generation. I want to continue this work as a healthcare professional, volunteering at free clinics and other community health events.
But my ultimate goal is to return to North Carolina and employ my skills and knowledge to give back to the community that has given me so much. As a Latina woman, I want to inspire other young women from underrepresented communities to pursue higher education and careers in healthcare. By showing them that it is possible to overcome obstacles and achieve their goals, I hope to help create a more diverse and inclusive healthcare workforce that better reflects the needs of our communities.
Ultimately, my experiences and passion have led me to pursue higher education and a career in healthcare with a focus on promoting diversity and inclusion. Through volunteer work and mentorship, I hope to inspire the next generation of healthcare professionals and give back to my community. And as I continue to grow and develop in my field, I remain committed to utilizing my skills and knowledge to make a positive impact on the lives of those around me.
Collaboration & Diversity in Healthcare Scholarship
As I reflect on my future career as a neurosurgeon, I am filled with a sense of purpose to make a difference in people's lives. However, as a member of a minority group, I recognize the lack of diversity in healthcare and the disparities that exist in medical care for marginalized communities. This realization has driven me to believe that collaboration and diversity are not only important, but they are necessary in advancing the healthcare and medical field.
I believe that every patient deserves to be heard and understood, and that can only happen when healthcare providers come from diverse backgrounds, speak different languages, and have unique perspectives. As someone who is bilingual and plans to learn ASL, I am committed to breaking down language barriers and ensuring that every patient feels heard and understood. I strongly believe that making the medical field more inclusive to patients will lead to better health outcomes and positively impact society as a whole.
Moreover, I am passionate about the importance of collaboration in advancing the healthcare and medical field. I believe that no single person can solve all the challenges we face in healthcare, and that is why working together is essential. When we come together and share our experiences and knowledge, we can make a difference in the lives of our patients. I believe that collaboration can lead to breakthroughs and advancements in medicine that can change the course of a patient's life.
One experience that left a profound impact on me was when I was working collaboratively as a junior class vice president to plan and execute our prom. As part of the junior class council, I had to work with other council members to plan and budget for our prom. We had to agree upon a theme, choose decorations, and make sure we stayed within budget. Collaborating with the prom committee, I learned the importance of having input from multiple people and appreciating the value of unique perspectives. Despite having different ideas and opinions, we came together to create a beautiful and memorable experience for everyone. I remember feeling a sense of accomplishment and satisfaction when we saw how much the students enjoyed the prom. This experience taught me that collaboration is not always easy, but it is necessary to achieve success.
My desire to make a positive impact in people's lives as a neurosurgeon is intertwined with my belief that collaboration and diversity are crucial in advancing the healthcare and medical field. I am committed to working collaboratively with colleagues from diverse backgrounds to provide the best care possible to our patients. I am passionate about creating an inclusive environment that welcomes all patients, and I believe that by doing so, we can make a difference in the world.
North Star Dreamers Memorial Scholarship
My personal journey has been shaped by my own struggles with a neurological disorder, which has given me a unique perspective and the desire to make a positive impact in the field of medicine. It was through my own experiences with this condition that I became fascinated with the brain and nervous system, and inspired to pursue a career in neurosurgery. As a young Latina, I am aware of the underrepresentation of minorities in the medical field, particularly those with advanced degrees, and I am determined to break down these barriers and pave the way for other young women like me.
However, pursuing higher education can be a daunting financial burden, especially for a first-generation college student like myself. That's why this scholarship would mean so much to me. It would not only provide me with the financial support I need to achieve my academic and career goals but would also serve as a recognition of my dedication and hard work.
As someone who is committed to making medicine more accessible to underserved communities, this scholarship would be invaluable in allowing me to continue my volunteer work in my community. I have seen firsthand the need for affordable and accessible healthcare and am eager to continue expanding my skills and knowledge to better serve my patients. With the financial support of this scholarship, I would have more flexibility to participate in community service initiatives focused on providing healthcare and essential supplies to underserved communities. It would allow me to gain valuable experience in the field of medicine and to better understand the needs and challenges faced by underprivileged individuals.
Furthermore, this scholarship would enable me to devote more time and energy towards volunteering and making a difference in my community. Without the need for a work-study job, I would have more flexibility to participate in community service initiatives focused on providing healthcare and essential supplies to underserved communities. This would not only benefit the community but would also allow me to gain valuable experience in the field of medicine and to better understand the needs and challenges faced by underprivileged individuals. I am passionate about learning American Sign Language (ASL) as a way to better communicate with patients who may have specific needs. However, the cost of taking ASL classes is prohibitive for me at this time. This scholarship would provide me with the resources to pursue ASL classes and other educational opportunities that will help me become a more effective and compassionate physician during my time in college.
Receiving this scholarship would not only help me achieve my academic and career goals, but it would also allow me to continue making a difference in my community by providing care and supplies to those in need. As a future neurosurgical oncologist and advocate for accessible healthcare, I am deeply grateful for the support that this scholarship would provide. It would allow me to continue making a difference in my community by providing care to those in need. And it would give me the confidence and motivation to continue pursuing my goals despite any obstacles that may come my way. I am deeply grateful for this opportunity and the support that this scholarship would provide.

As someone who grew up in a low-income family and experienced firsthand the effects of food scarcity and hunger, community service and assisting those in need have always been a significant part of my life. I witnessed how much of a struggle it can be to make ends meet, and the challenges that come with food insecurity. That's why I'm passionate about giving back to my community and helping those in need.
My commitment to community service started two years ago after I saw the lasting impacts of the pandemic on my community I decided to step out of my comfort zone and help. I have volunteered at local food banks, soup kitchens, and participated in community service initiatives focused on addressing food scarcity and hunger through my local youth council. One of my most memorable experiences was volunteering at a Halloween event where I helped to sort and distribute food to families in need and candy to the children. I will never forget the gratitude on their faces and the impact that something as small as being able to celebrate a fun holiday can do. I believe that everyone especially children deserve the chance to celebrate and have fun regardless of their economic status because I know what it feels like to miss out on memorable experiences like these growing up.
Through these experiences, I've learned that community service is not just about giving back, but also about growing as a person. It has taught me to be grateful for what I have and to be more empathetic toward those who are less fortunate or different from me. It has also shown me that anyone can make a difference, no matter how small the action may seem. Additionally, I am extremely grateful to have had the chance to make a difference while building a community with my peers. I have struggled with a complicated home life which has worsened over the years and being able to go out volunteering and having fun while doing so has really helped me mentally and has opened my eyes to the impact that volunteering and community service can have not only on the community itself but the individual. This has not only deepened the significance of community service for me but also allowed me to meet people in similar situations and grow with and from them.
My passion for assisting those in need extends beyond just my personal experiences. I am inspired by the way my small community comes together to help those in need through volunteering and donations. Seeing the impact that a community can make when they work together to address an issue is truly inspiring, and it has motivated me to continue to make a difference in the lives of others.
In the future, I plan to continue my commitment to community service and assisting those in need, no matter where life takes me. It is something that I want to keep with me throughout my life, and I hope to inspire others to do the same. I believe that it is essential to give back to the community and help those who are less fortunate, and I am dedicated to doing my part in making the world a better place and to spread the love and passion I hold for community service.

Coming from a low-income family has undoubtedly had a significant impact on my life, but I have chosen to focus on the positive effects and lessons that have shaped me into the person I am today, although I believe both positive and negative experiences I had due to my socioeconomic status help to drive me towards accomplishing my goals and will forever be a part of me.
I have learned firsthand the struggles of not having enough money for an excess amount of food, and I have experienced the lack of help in those situations. This has made me appreciate the value of community service even more. I have participated in programs such as a local university's monthly meal kit donations to the undocumented Latinx community, and have helped with special trick-or-treating stations for low-income children during holidays like Halloween. I strongly believe that everyone, regardless of their economic status, deserves the opportunity to celebrate and have fun. At these events, there is food for anyone who needs it. These experiences have taught me the importance of generosity and selflessness, and I plan to continue serving my community in the future through donations and service.
It was often difficult for me to fit in with my peers as I didn't always have the latest clothes or phones. Many of my possessions were hand-me-downs from my older sister, which sometimes hurt my self-esteem. However, as I grew older, I learned that these experiences allowed me to appreciate my unique qualities and focus on self-acceptance rather than self-hatred. Additionally, these experiences have helped me to be more accepting of others who are different from me, regardless of their economic status or material possessions. This has allowed me to look past first impressions and value people more deeply for who they are.
My experiences have also fueled my desire to pursue a career in medicine, specifically as a neurosurgical oncologist. My goal is to attend medical school and become a skilled practitioner who can diagnose and treat patients with brain tumors. I am fascinated by the complexity of the brain and its intricate relationship with the body. I believe that through extensive research and innovative treatment options, we can improve the lives of those affected by these conditions. In addition to my career aspirations, another important goal of mine is to provide financial assistance for my family. As a first-generation student, I understand the financial burdens that can come with pursuing higher education. I am committed to making sure that my family is taken care of, and that they can pursue their own goals and dreams. Additionally, I am dedicated to serving my community through donations and service. I have been involved in various community initiatives that target food insecurity issues. A goal of mine is to continue this work in the future. I believe that everyone deserves access to basic needs like food and shelter, and I am passionate about doing my part to make this a reality.
