    Cat Zingano Overcoming Loss Scholarship
When a loved one passes away, we frequently experience a period of introspection and self-reflection during which we think about the things that are important in life. The passing of my great-grandmother was a significant turning point in my life. Being a first-generation American with few family members living close by, my mother's stories—especially the ones about her grandmother, and my great-grandmother—had a big influence on how I perceived family ties. I discovered via these accounts the significant influence she had on my mother's life—that is, how she gave her a haven from a challenging family life. The loss of my great-grandma not only had a profound impact on my mother, but it also gave my sister and me a stronger sense of direction and motivated us to give priority to intimate connections. My mother would frequently share stories about her grandma when she was a child. These tales were vivid depictions of love, resiliency, and refuge rather than just family history. The difficulties of an abusive home were a part of my mother's early years, and she sought comfort—even in housework—in her grandmother's home. During turbulent times, my mother found emotional solace and stability in this connection. My mother was devastated to learn that she would not be able to attend her great-grandmother's burial due to the physical distance between their two nations. But realizing what her grandma stood for in her life—rather than the death itself—caused a significant shift in her. My mother realized that instead of feeling forced to continue unhealthy relationships out of a sense of duty to uphold her family's reputation, she should have given priority to those who loved her. Her perspective on relationships and self-worth significantly changed as a result of this realization. I was deeply affected by seeing my mother go through this change. It served as a wake-up call for me, motivating me to reconsider the dynamics in my relationships. I began to realize how crucial it was to surround myself with individuals who genuinely cared about my development and well-being. As a result, I started pulling away from friendships that didn't please me or were emotionally taxing. Although difficult, this process was essential to my personal growth and mental well-being. I concentrated on fostering relationships that gave me happiness and pleasure at the same time. I went out of my way to find people who were friendly, encouraging, and had similar ideals. Through this action, I fostered a social atmosphere that was more supportive and upbeat, which greatly improved my general state of well-being. I was able to focus my efforts on interactions that were enlightening because of this deliberate change in my relationships. For my mother and me, it has been an ongoing struggle to prioritize good relationships and let go of harmful ones. It is evidence of the enduring power of my great-grandmother's love and support, which gave my mother the will to go through her struggles. Her beliefs have encouraged us to make great changes in our lives, and these changes have left a lasting impact. In conclusion, my great-grandmother's passing brought home how crucial it is to take care of people who genuinely love us. It instilled in my mother and me the importance of self-worth and the need to cultivate positive, wholesome connections. We now have the strength to stand up for what we deserve in life and make sure that genuine connection, love, and respect come first. The memory of my great-grandmother continues to serve as a beacon for us, a constant reminder of the fortitude and resiliency that result from cherishing our connections and self.

There was a time in my life when I encountered an obstacle so profound that it reshaped my entire perspective on mental health and personal strength. This period was marked by intense emotional turmoil and a deep sense of failure, yet it ultimately led to profound growth and the pursuit of a career dedicated to helping others. The challenge began when I was twelve years old, shortly after I revealed to my mother that I had been sexually abused. My mother, deeply concerned about my mental health, insisted that I see a therapist. Despite my intense resistance, she scheduled an appointment, hoping it would help me navigate the overwhelming depression and anxiety I was experiencing. My initial perception of therapy was extremely negative. I associated it with serious mental illnesses and viewed it as an admission of failure. The idea of needing therapy made me feel ashamed and weak. This stigma, combined with the trauma of my abuse, left me feeling utterly defeated as I sat in the therapist's reception area, crying while my mother filled out the necessary paperwork. As we entered the therapist’s office, I felt a sense of humiliation and childishness. The room smelled of incense, and the walls were adorned with children's drawings, making me feel even more vulnerable. My therapist, Emily, greeted us warmly and led me to the couch, where she began reviewing my information sheet. When she reached the details of my assault, she paused and then said, "I'm sorry for what happened to you." Reflexively, I responded with, "It's okay," a phrase I had often used to avoid burdening others with my pain. Emily’s response was transformative. She looked at me and said, "No, it's not okay." Her words were a revelation. For the first time, I felt truly seen and understood. This acknowledgment of my pain was a pivotal moment, challenging my long-held belief that I needed to minimize my trauma to avoid inconveniencing others. By the end of that first session, I felt a glimmer of hope. Although I didn't know exactly how I sensed that something positive was beginning to take root. Over the next five years, my therapy sessions with Emily became a cornerstone of my recovery. I gradually learned to navigate my emotions, set boundaries, and advocate for myself. These sessions helped me understand that seeking help was not a sign of weakness but a courageous step toward healing. The most significant lesson I learned was the importance of addressing and validating one's emotions. Through therapy, I discovered the strength of vulnerability and the power of empathy. Emily's unwavering support and insightful guidance were instrumental in helping me rebuild my self-esteem and develop a healthier mindset. My support system extended beyond Emily to include my mother, who never wavered in her belief that therapy would benefit me, and a close circle of friends who provided additional encouragement. Their collective support was crucial in helping me overcome my initial reluctance and embrace the therapeutic process. This journey also inspired my academic and professional goals. Witnessing the transformative impact of therapy firsthand ignited my passion for social work. I am now pursuing a bachelor's degree in social work, with plans to obtain a master's degree in the same field. My ultimate goal is to become a therapist or mental health counselor, specializing in helping survivors of sexual abuse. I want to offer others the same support and understanding that Emily provided me, helping them navigate their healing journeys. Additionally, my experience with therapy has motivated me to give back to my community in other meaningful ways. I volunteer as an assistant dance teacher at my dance studio, working with young students to build their confidence through the art of dance. This role allows me to inspire and support them, much like Emily did for me. Seeing my students gain confidence and confide in me about their challenges has reinforced my belief in the importance of mentorship and emotional support. In conclusion, encountering the obstacle of accepting my need for therapy was a challenging and transformative experience. It taught me invaluable lessons about the importance of mental health, the strength in seeking help, and the impact one compassionate person can have on another's life. This journey not only helped me overcome my feelings of failure but also inspired me to pursue a career dedicated to helping others heal. My support system, particularly my mother and Emily, played a crucial role in this transformation, and I am committed to continuing their legacy of empathy and support in my future endeavors.

Turning dreams into reality is a process that requires dedication, strategic planning, and relentless effort. I have devised a structured plan to achieve my dreams, rooted in my passion for social work and helping those in need. My roadmap involves three major steps: obtaining higher education, starting a career as a therapist or mental health counselor, and ultimately working with the Rape, Abuse & Incest National Network (RAINN). My journey begins with education. I am committed to earning both a bachelor's and a master's degree in social work. This academic pursuit is not just a formality but a foundational step that will equip me with the necessary knowledge and skills to make a meaningful impact. Through rigorous coursework, practical fieldwork, and research, I will gain a deep understanding of the various facets of social work. This includes learning about different therapeutic techniques, understanding the complexities of human behavior, and becoming proficient in the laws and ethical standards governing the profession. This education will be crucial in shaping me into a competent and compassionate social worker, ready to address the needs of the most vulnerable populations. The second step in my plan is to secure a job as a therapist or mental health counselor. This role will allow me to directly apply my education and begin my hands-on journey in helping those in need. More importantly, this experience will allow me to understand the real-world challenges faced by individuals dealing with mental health issues and the impact of trauma. By addressing these challenges, I will be better prepared to provide effective support and develop innovative solutions to help my clients heal and thrive. The final and perhaps most personal step in my plan is to work with the Rape, Abuse & Incest National Network (RAINN). RAINN is an organization dedicated to helping victims of sexual abuse, an area that resonates deeply with me due to my personal experiences. My dream is to contribute to RAINN's mission by providing support to survivors of sexual abuse, advocating for their rights, and raising awareness about this critical issue. Working with RAINN will not only allow me to make a tangible difference in the lives of survivors but also help me fulfill a personal commitment to combat sexual violence. I believe that my unique perspective as a survivor will enable me to connect with other survivors on a deeper level, offering them empathy, understanding, and hope. Additionally, being part of such a renowned organization will provide me with a platform to influence policy changes, engage in public education campaigns, and collaborate with other advocates to create a safer and more supportive society for all. In conclusion, turning my dreams into reality involves a clear and actionable plan centered around education, career development, and advocacy. By pursuing advanced degrees in social work, gaining practical experience as a therapist, and dedicating myself to the mission of RAINN, I am committed to making a lasting impact in the field of social work. My journey is driven by a deep-seated desire to help others, particularly survivors of sexual abuse, and to create a world where everyone has the support and resources they need to heal and thrive. The journey through academia is often portrayed as a linear progression marked by academic achievements and personal growth. However, for individuals grappling with mental health challenges, this journey can resemble a labyrinth, fraught with obstacles and uncertainties. As someone who wrestles with social anxiety, the interplay between my mental health and academic performance has been a complex and multifaceted experience, leaving an indelible imprint on both my scholastic pursuits and personal life. In the crucible of the classroom, my social anxiety casts a long shadow, transforming the once-familiar terrain of learning into a battleground of apprehension and dread. The prospect of presentations or interactions with new acquaintances becomes a crucible of anxiety, each encounter fraught with the looming specter of panic and unease. One poignant instance crystallizes this reality: a routine history presentation unraveled into a harrowing ordeal as I grappled with a crippling panic attack. Gasping for breath and besieged by blurry vision, I found solace only when guided to safety by a compassionate aide, whose intervention served as a lifeline amidst the tumult of anxiety. Beyond the confines of academia, my social anxiety extends its tendrils into the fabric of my personal life, insidiously shaping everyday interactions and mundane tasks with its suffocating presence. Simple acts, such as ordering food or seeking assistance, assume the proportions of Herculean trials, each fraught with the looming shadow of anxiety-induced paralysis. Yet, amid the labyrinth of anxiety, I have forged pathways to resilience and empowerment, reclaiming agency over my mental well-being. Central to my arsenal of coping mechanisms is the practice of cognitive reframing, a mental alchemy that transmutes fear into opportunity. Confronted with the specter of anxiety, I summon the courage to confront the worst-case scenarios that haunt my thoughts, only to realize that the perceived cataclysms are but phantoms conjured by anxiety's deceitful machinations. In embracing this perspective, I liberate myself from the shackles of fear, reclaiming agency over my narrative and charting a course toward empowerment. Moreover, I cultivate a steadfast belief in my intrinsic worth and capabilities, countering the insidious whispers of self-doubt that echo within the recesses of my mind. Recognizing that my anxiety seeks to diminish my sense of self-worth, I defiantly assert my competence and resilience, affirming my capacity to surmount obstacles and flourish in the face of adversity. Armed with this conviction, I confront each challenge with a renewed sense of purpose and determination, refusing to be defined by the limitations imposed by anxiety. In the tapestry of my journey, the interplay between mental health and academic performance emerges as a nuanced dance of resilience and vulnerability. Through the crucible of anxiety, I have gleaned invaluable lessons in self-compassion and resilience, forging pathways to empowerment and self-discovery. As I navigate the labyrinth of academia, I remain steadfast in my commitment to prioritize my mental health, weaving threads of resilience and self-compassion into the fabric of my journey.

In the tapestry of life, some moments stand out, woven with threads of kindness that leave an indelible mark on our souls. For me, such a moment unfolded in the form of Mrs. Vertuccio, my middle school science and math teacher, whose compassion and understanding reshaped my perspective and transformed my approach to life. Reflecting on my academic journey, it’s not embellishment to say that I struggled. Academic probation loomed over me like a specter, casting doubt on my abilities and eroding my self-esteem. Despite my earnest efforts, the chasm between where I stood and where I wanted to be seemed insurmountable. Yet, amidst this turmoil, fate led me to Our Lady of Mount Carmel and into the orbit of Mrs. Vertuccio. Walking into her classroom, trepidation gripped me. Would this be another arena for my shortcomings to be exposed, another stage for my inadequacies to be spotlighted? Yet, as I soon discovered, Mrs. Vertuccio’s classroom was not a crucible of judgment but rather a sanctuary of learning and acceptance. The watershed moment came during a lesson on fractions. Wrestling with concepts that seemed as elusive as mist, I hesitated to seek help, fearing ridicule or admonishment. But Mrs. Vertuccio’s approach shattered my preconceptions. Instead of chastising my silence or my struggles, she extended a hand of empathy and guidance. When my turn for one-on-one assistance arrived, I braced myself for disappointment. But Mrs. Vertuccio’s response defied my expectations. With patience as her compass and empathy as her guide, she led me through the labyrinth of fractions, illuminating pathways I had never dared to tread. She didn’t just offer solutions; she empowered me to discover my understanding, nurturing confidence where doubt had once flourished. In that pivotal moment, the seeds of kindness she sowed took root within me, blossoming into a profound realization: understanding precedes judgment, empathy precedes criticism. Mrs. Vertuccio didn’t just teach fractions; she imparted a lesson in humanity, revealing the transformative power of empathy and kindness. Her influence didn’t end with fractions or mathematics; it permeated every facet of my life. Armed with the empathy she instilled in me, I embarked on a journey of kindness, approaching each interaction with open arms and an open heart. No longer shackled by the fear of judgment or the burden of inadequacy, I embraced the opportunity to extend the same compassion I had received. Through Mrs. Vertuccio’s kindness, I discovered that the smallest acts of empathy can catalyze profound change. In a world often marred by division and discord, her example serves as a beacon of hope, illuminating a path toward understanding and acceptance. In conclusion, the impact of Mrs. Vertuccio’s kindness reverberates through my life like concentric circles on a tranquil pond, touching not only my existence but also the lives of those I encounter. She embodies the profound truth that kindness is not merely a virtue but a catalyst for transformation, shaping destinies and touching hearts in ways both subtle and sublime. To Mrs. Vertuccio, I owe not only my gratitude but also my commitment to perpetuating the legacy of kindness she so beautifully exemplified.
    David Foster Memorial Scholarship
Throughout my high school years, many educators left an indelible mark on my life, but none quite like my "school moms" – Mrs. Cerra and Mrs. T, my hairdressing teachers. Beyond their roles as instructors, they served as mentors, confidants, and unwavering support pillars, forever altering the trajectory of my journey and reshaping how I approach life. From the moment I stepped into their classroom, Mrs. Cerra and Mrs. T transcended the conventional boundaries of teacher-student relationships, assuming the roles of surrogate mothers within the bustling confines of our school's cosmetology department. Over four transformative years, they offered more than just technical instruction; they provided a sanctuary, a haven where students like myself could seek solace, guidance, and understanding. As a shy freshman and sophomore, I often found myself grappling with feelings of apprehension and uncertainty. Yet, in Mrs. Cerra and Mrs. T's presence, those anxieties melted away, replaced by a profound sense of belonging and acceptance. Whether I needed a quiet space to tackle schoolwork or simply yearned for a sympathetic ear, they were always there, ready to listen, comfort, and uplift. It was during my junior year that I truly began to flourish under their tutelage. As I immersed myself in honing my hairdressing skills, Mrs. T emerged as a steadfast champion, providing invaluable guidance, encouragement, and constructive criticism aimed at propelling me towards excellence. Her unwavering belief in my potential instilled within me a newfound sense of confidence and determination, fueling my aspirations and propelling me toward success. Similarly, during my senior year, Mrs. Cerra assumed the role of mentor and guide, offering sage advice, practical wisdom, and unwavering support as I prepared for my cosmetology license. Her nurturing presence and unwavering positivity served as a beacon of light during moments of doubt and uncertainty, infusing me with the resilience and optimism needed to navigate the challenges that lay ahead. Yet, beyond the technical skills and industry knowledge imparted by Mrs. Cerra and Mrs. T, it was their emphasis on the power of positivity and self-belief that resonated most deeply with me. In a world often fraught with negativity and doubt, they stood as living embodiments of hope, advocating tirelessly for the transformative power of optimism and resilience. Their unwavering commitment to fostering a culture of positivity and self-belief left an indelible imprint on my psyche, shaping how I approach challenges and opportunities in both my personal and professional life. Elevate Women in Technology Scholarship
Social media stands as a beacon of connectivity, illuminating the vast potential of technology to foster positive change in our world. Its ability to transcend geographical boundaries and bring people together in virtual communities inspires me deeply. Through platforms like Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram, individuals from diverse backgrounds can share their stories, amplify marginalized voices, and shine a spotlight on important societal issues that might otherwise remain obscured. Social media catalyzes social movements, enabling grassroots activism on a global scale. From #BlackLivesMatter to #MeToo, these movements have harnessed the power of social media to spark conversations, mobilize support, and drive tangible change. Without these platforms, the voices of marginalized communities might have been drowned out by the status quo. However, the same technology that empowers can also deceive. Social media's rapid dissemination of information has paved the way for the spread of misinformation and hate speech, posing significant challenges to societal cohesion and democratic discourse. Yet, I believe that with enhanced regulation and responsible usage, social media can realize its full potential as a force for good. By implementing measures to combat misinformation and promote civil discourse, social media platforms can foster environments conducive to meaningful dialogue and positive social change. Through collective efforts to promote digital literacy and critical thinking skills, we can empower users to navigate the digital landscape responsibly, discerning fact from fiction and fostering empathy and understanding. In conclusion, social media exemplifies the transformative power of technology to connect, inform, and inspire. While it has its pitfalls, its potential to amplify voices, raise awareness, and drive social change is undeniable. By harnessing the positive potential of social media and addressing its challenges head-on, we can leverage technology to create a more equitable, informed, and connected world for all.

From a young age, I witnessed my mother's determination to provide me with a safe and nurturing environment, even in the face of adversity. Her decision to leave an abusive relationship, despite the lack of support from her family, left her feeling isolated and alone. However, she refused to let these challenges define her or dictate the course of our lives. Instead, she made it her mission to shield me from harm and create a home filled with love and security. One of the most profound lessons I learned from my mother is the importance of resilience and perseverance in the face of adversity. Despite the numerous obstacles she encountered, she never wavered in her commitment to ensuring my well-being and happiness. She taught me that setbacks are merely opportunities for growth and that true strength lies in the ability to overcome adversity with grace and determination. Moreover, my mother instilled in me the value of hard work and dedication. She worked tirelessly to provide for our family, often juggling multiple jobs to make ends meet. Her relentless work ethic served as a constant reminder of the importance of diligence and perseverance in achieving one's goals. Additionally, my mother's unwavering support and encouragement have allowed me to pursue my passions and dreams without reservation. When faced with the decision of choosing a career path in high school, she selflessly prioritized my happiness and aspirations, even if it meant deviating from the conventional path. By allowing me to pursue my interest in the hairdressing trade, she empowered me to follow my heart and pursue a path that aligned with my true passions. Overall, my mother's influence extends far beyond the confines of our familial bond. She has taught me invaluable lessons in resilience, perseverance, and the importance of staying true to oneself. Her unwavering support and unconditional love have shaped me into the person I am today, instilling within me a sense of independence, determination, and unwavering faith in the pursuit of my dreams. Without her guidance and unwavering presence in my life, my journey would have been vastly different. She remains not only my greatest source of inspiration but also my guiding light in navigating life's myriad challenges and triumphs.

Reflecting on my life journey, I realize that what sets me apart from other scholarship applicants is my ability to thrive despite facing numerous setbacks. These challenges have shaped me into the resilient and determined individual that I am today, propelling me towards my goals and aspirations. One of the most significant setbacks I encountered was the absence of my father from my life. His departure at a young age left me grappling with unanswered questions and a sense of abandonment. I often wondered why he left and whether he ever cared about me. These lingering doubts haunted me for years, consuming precious mental energy that could have been directed toward my personal and academic growth. However, I made a conscious decision to channel that energy into productive avenues, particularly focusing on excelling in my schoolwork. Rather than dwelling on the past, I resolved to carve out my path to success, one that was not contingent on the presence of a father figure in my life. Another formidable challenge I faced was the experience of sexual abuse during my formative years, spanning from ages six to ten. The trauma inflicted upon me left deep emotional scars and a pervasive sense of worthlessness. At times, it felt as though there was no purpose in continuing to persevere. However, it was precisely the resilience I discovered within myself that propelled me forward. Despite the pain and anguish, I refused to allow my past experiences to define me. One instance where I extended a helping hand to someone in need stands out vividly in my memory. As an active member of my community, I've always felt a natural inclination to lend support wherever it's needed, whether it's teaching young children or assisting at homeless shelters. My motivation to volunteer stems from the desire to uplift my community, boost my self-esteem, and contribute to overall betterment. However, one particular experience highlighted the profound impact of connecting with others and learning from them. My involvement as an assistant teacher at a dance studio provided me with the opportunity to interact with young girls and boys from diverse backgrounds. Among my students was a girl who stood out for her limited English proficiency and preference for speaking Portuguese. Despite being the only one who could communicate with her effectively, I was taken aback one day when she chose to sit next to another teacher instead of me during our class for elementary kids. Curious about her sudden behavior change, I overheard her conversing in English, a language she was striving to master. It dawned on me that she harbored a dream of conversing fluently with her peers and instructors. Witnessing her efforts to engage with her classmates to improve her English skills was truly inspiring. However, she hesitated to approach the other teachers, fearing they wouldn't understand her. In an attempt to alleviate her apprehension, I reassured her that the teachers were there to support her journey and would be delighted to converse with her. Seeing the joy on her face as she engaged in conversation with the other teacher reaffirmed my belief in the power of mentorship and support. Later, the teacher confided in me, expressing her emotional response to their interaction, highlighting the profound impact of our encouragement on the student's confidence and growth. This experience reinforced my conviction that the most meaningful contributions to my community stem from personal connections and positive influence. While I strive to initiate change within my community, it's the transformative effect on individuals that truly reflects the impact of my efforts. Moving forward, I am committed to continuing this journey of empowerment and growth, and eager to witness the ripple effects of positive change within my community. In hindsight, this encounter serves as a poignant reminder of the profound impact that small acts of kindness and encouragement can have on individuals' lives. As I embark on future endeavors, I am motivated by the belief that fostering connections and supporting others can create lasting change and foster a stronger, more resilient community.

Growing up with a family history of substance abuse has deeply influenced my beliefs, relationships, and career aspirations. The impact of witnessing my father and grandfather struggle with alcohol abuse has left an indelible mark on my life, shaping my perspectives in profound ways. My father's battle with alcoholism began before I could fully comprehend its effects. He left when I was just four years old, leaving behind a young child who longed for the support and guidance of a father figure. In contrast, my grandfather's struggle with substance abuse hit me closer to home. Witnessing his battle with alcoholism firsthand, I experienced the harrowing reality of addiction in real time. When he was rushed to the hospital after a heart attack, it served as a wake-up call for our entire family. The gravity of the situation forced us to confront the stark reality of his addiction and the toll it was taking on his health and well-being. It was a stark reminder of the destructive power of addiction and the urgent need for intervention and support. Fortunately, my grandfather's health scare catalyzed change. With the unwavering support of our family, he began his journey toward recovery, gradually reducing his alcohol intake and prioritizing his health. His resilience and determination have been a source of inspiration, demonstrating the transformative power of perseverance and the possibility of redemption even in the darkest of times. Dance has been an intrinsic part of my life for as long as I can remember. From the tender age of 5, when I took my first steps into the studio, to now, as a senior on the cusp of leaving this chapter behind, dance has been my constant companion, shaping not only my movements but also molding the very essence of who I am today. Reflecting on my 12-year journey in dance, I realize how deeply it has influenced my personal growth and development. It's more than just a hobby or a passion; it's an integral part of my identity. The dance floor is where I feel most at home, where I can express myself freely without inhibition. It's where I've forged lifelong friendships, bonds that transcend the boundaries of the studio walls and accompany me through the highs and lows of life. As I approach my final year of dance as a senior, I find myself in a leadership position as an assistant teacher for the younger classes. This role has taught me invaluable lessons in understanding and patience. Guiding young dancers through their journey reminds me of the challenges I once faced and the guidance I received along the way. It's a humbling experience that has taught me to empathize with others and appreciate the transformative power of mentorship. Moreover, dance has instilled in me the importance of support. Whether it's the unwavering encouragement of my dance teams or the rallying of friends and family during performances, I've learned firsthand the strength of a supportive community. They've been there for me in the studio and outside of it, cheering me on as I pursued my dreams, including the monumental milestone of getting into my dream college. Beyond the technical skills and physical prowess honed on the dance floor, dance has imparted invaluable life lessons that extend far beyond the realm of movement. It has taught me discipline, perseverance, and resilience in the face of adversity. The hours of practice, the setbacks, the moments of self-doubt – they've all contributed to shaping me into the resilient individual I am today. Dance has also served as a medium for self-discovery and self-expression. Through choreography, I've been able to explore the depths of my emotions, channeling them into a movement that speaks volumes when words fall short. It's a form of catharsis, a release that allows me to shed the weight of the world and simply be in the moment, fully present and alive. In essence, dance has not only influenced but defined the woman I am today. It's woven into the fabric of my being, threading through every aspect of my life and leaving an indelible mark on my soul. Without it, I would be incomplete, like a melody without rhythm or a canvas without color. As I stand on the threshold of a new chapter, I carry with me the lessons learned and the memories cherished from my years in dance. They serve as a beacon of light, guiding me forward with confidence and grace. And though my time in the studio may be coming to an end, the spirit of dance will forever dance within me, a testament to its enduring impact on who I am and who I aspire to be.

As my senior year comes to a close, I find myself reflecting on the journey I've taken and the changes I've experienced. Looking back, I can't help but feel a sense of accomplishment and growth. The title of this chapter in my life would undoubtedly be "It all changes at the end." My high school years were far from typical, beginning during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic. Like many others, I experienced the challenges of isolation and loneliness as my freshman year unfolded. Attending school sporadically and being unable to socialize with my peers only exacerbated these feelings. While I excelled academically, and socially, I felt adrift and disconnected. This pattern persisted into my sophomore and junior years, where I continued to prioritize my studies while struggling to forge meaningful connections with my classmates. Despite my efforts, I found it difficult to break out of my shell and engage with others. The prospect of ending my high school career without experiencing the sense of camaraderie and belonging that many of my peers enjoyed was disheartening. However, as my senior year approached, I made a conscious decision to take control of my social life and rewrite my narrative. I realized that if I wanted things to change, I would have to be the one to initiate that change. Armed with determination and a newfound sense of purpose, I set out to break down the barriers that had kept me isolated for so long. Over my senior year, I made a concerted effort to step out of my comfort zone, initiate conversations, and participate in social activities. It wasn't easy, and there were moments of doubt and insecurity along the way. But with each interaction, I gained confidence and began to form genuine connections with my peers. As I reflect on the progress I've made, I'm filled with a sense of pride and gratitude. I've cultivated a solid circle of friends who accept me for who I am, flaws, and all. These friendships have enriched my senior year experience in ways I never thought possible, providing support, laughter, and shared memories that I will carry with me long after graduation. My senior year has taught me a lesson: that change is possible, even when it seems daunting or impossible. By taking steps to overcome my social barriers, I've transformed my high school experience and set the stage for a brighter future.

Life is a tapestry woven with the threads of our unique experiences, and for me, growing up in a single-parent, low-income household has been a defining aspect of my journey. Raised by my resilient mother, a Brazilian immigrant navigating the complexities of life in America, my childhood was marked by the challenges of language barriers and financial constraints. Yet, through adversity, I learned to persevere, mature, and develop a profound sense of empathy that fuels my commitment to making a positive impact in my community and the world. My mother's journey from Brazil to the United States was a testament to her determination for a better life. However, the language barrier she faced became a significant obstacle in her daily life. English, a foreign tongue, posed challenges in every aspect—from navigating simple errands to understanding complex paperwork. As her child, I found myself stepping into the role of a translator and advocate from a young age, bridging the linguistic gap between my mother and the outside world. Being thrust into this responsibility forced me to mature faster than my peers. While others were engrossed in the simplicity of childhood, I was navigating the intricacies of adulthood, acting as a support pillar for my mother. This early exposure to life's complexities instilled in me a sense of independence and resilience, shaping my character and outlook on challenges. Rather than succumbing to the hardships, I embraced them as opportunities for personal growth. My experiences as the child of an immigrant and a member of a low-income household became the catalyst for my commitment to community service. I understood firsthand the struggles that individuals from similar backgrounds face, and this empathy fueled my desire to make a positive impact. Volunteering became a way for me to channel my experiences into meaningful action. By engaging in local community service initiatives, I found avenues to uplift those facing adversity, just as I had in my formative years. One of the most impactful ways I have chosen to give back is by providing support to those facing language barriers. Drawing from my own experiences, I volunteer as an English language tutor for immigrants, helping them overcome linguistic challenges and empowering them to navigate their new surroundings with confidence. Through language, I aim to break down barriers, fostering inclusivity and unity within our diverse community. Furthermore, I actively participate in initiatives addressing financial constraints that impact families in low-income communities. Whether through volunteering at homeless shelters or thrift stores, I leverage my journey to inspire and uplift those facing economic hardships. By sharing my story, I aim to demonstrate that circumstances do not define one's potential and that resilience can lead to transformative change. In conclusion, my journey from a single-parent, low-income household has shaped my character, instilling in me the values of perseverance, empathy, and a commitment to community service. From translating for my mother in my youth to actively contributing to community initiatives today, I recognize the power of shared experiences in fostering positive change. Through my ongoing efforts, I strive to be a beacon of hope and support for those facing challenges similar to those I encountered, creating a ripple effect of positive impact in both my local community and the broader world.

    First-Gen Futures Scholarship
Choosing to continue my education was as easy as drinking water every day. It was just something I knew I would do as early as middle school. Going into high school, I made it my mission to push myself academically and prepare myself for college. I took as many dual enrollment classes and AP classes as possible and volunteered as much as possible. I pushed myself because I wanted what was best for me and my future: college. As I come to the end of my high school career and get more college acceptance, I think about why I'm pushing myself to succeed in college. I remember from a young age my mother talking to me about the importance of schooling. She would talk about how she dreamed of doing something with mathematics and continuing her education but she had to give all that up due to having to care for her mother and getting ready to marry my father. She later moved to the USA and still wanted to continue her education but only a year after coming she got pregnant with me. She had to settle for working as a housecleaner. My father was never good in school, having to repeat the first grade six times. He eventually dropped out of middle school and never really had a passion for anything else. My father eventually left when I was four to move back to Brazil, seemingly following his only passion in life. Seeing how hard my mother worked to get her dreams and how she sacrificed so much for everyone else just to be left alone truly makes me understand why I push myself to this level. I'm lucky that I haven't had to sacrifice my personal goals for someone else and I can thank my mom for this. She always allowed me to choose what I wanted in life, even if it didn't go with what she wanted me to do. It is that part of her that I admire the most. She is the reason I push myself. She has given me the tools to find what I want to do in my future and now I am using those tools to better both of us. Since I'm going to be a first-generation student, I won't have anyone to lean back on when I need help with something college-related. I don't have any set plan for what to do but as my mom says, "This is going to be a learning experience for the two of us".

Striving for excellence is something I am inspired to do every day. Nowadays it is easy to just not care anymore to essentially give up on your hopes and dreams but I'm trying to change that in me. Some days it is hard and I feel like giving up but by the end, I know that if I don't put my best foot forward I won't be striving for a spirit of excellence. One of the ways I have pushed myself for excellence is by doing community service. It is one of the easiest ways to strive for excellence and also give back to those in your community. Before doing community service, my reason for gaining a spirit of excellence was through the interaction with the people I know whether that be family, friends, or acquaintances. I always tried to have as much of a positive attitude with anyone I interacted with but I still felt that I was missing something. I was doing a good deed and my sports were high but I felt that I could be doing more. My mom has a history of helping people so when one of her co-worker's cousins needed a ride to the food bank, she didn't hesitate to offer help. I went with her to see what it is like at a food bank and it was a turning point in my journey. Seeing all these volunteers who have no monetary incentive to do this type of work but still do it just out of the good of their hearts was something that made me think. They were helping those in need and I realized that this was something I needed to do. After we got the food they handed out a pamphlet that had ways to volunteer and my mom recommended that I volunteer which was the final deel. Before I volunteered, I began to donate food to the food bank, researching what my local food bank needed. I also went around to friends and family and asked if they had any food that they would want to donate. To my surprise, most people are willing to donate food if you just ask. I also began to research different ways of helping the community such as donating blood and volunteering at the homeless shelter. Doing all of these small actions helped lift my spirit and made me feel like a much better person. Now that I have many different volunteering experiences with me I can say that volunteering and helping those in need is the best to to strive for a spirit of excellence.

As a determined individual whose passion is to help those who need it the most, I plan on using my degree to create a safe space and harbor a secure and kind community for all individuals. This issue is personal to me as I haven't always had a safe environment to go to. As the daughter of a single immigrant mother, I always lived with the fear of my mother being deported and leaving to go back to Brazil. I was also sexually assaulted by my babysitter for many years, leaving me fearful of older men due to my abuse. Elementary school was also difficult because of the heavy bullying I faced. At such a young age, my whole world was based on fear. Only at the age of ten did I begin to look at the world differently. I told my mom about the sexual assault and the bullying. She immediately reported my abuser to the authorities and he was sent to prison. She also put me in a new school where I could make friends that I'm still friends with to this day. I also started going to therapy which helped me unravel many of my fears. All these changes helped me see the world in a much better way. My personal experience with fear is my driving force for wanting to help those in similar situations. With my degree in social work, I plan on advocating for social justice and mental health, nourishing family and social networks, empowering the disenfranchised, and developing fulfilling communities. Social workers oftentimes are at the forefront of social change and I plan on continuing this by advocating for policy changes, grassroots initiatives, and programs that are vital for the community's growth. Oftentimes it is social workers that create the most change due to their expertise and expertise within the community. Knowing about mental health and understanding its effects on people is crucial for social workers as it plays a major part in creating a safe community. About 1 in 4 American adults have a mental illness which if not addressed can be detrimental to someone's overall health. With my degree, I plan on learning as much knowledge on mental health and the appropriate actions done to help those with mental health issues. Mental health has a major impact on families and how they function. Building better family relationships and social circles is imperative to creating a safe community. I plan on creating resources for families in need and working with families to create safe and strong relationships. I also will create safe hubs for those escaping abusive family situations. I would create a safe hub for the homeless, elderly, foster youth, and those who have experienced abuse as they are the most vulnerable in many communities. Working with these individuals and helping them with different aspects of life is imperative for communities to grow. Together, all these actions can create a major difference in individuals' lives. I am confident that these plans will provide communities in need with a positive start in creating a safe and strong place for all.

As I get more decision letters from different colleges, I look back at the past and how it got me here. There was a point in my life where I didn't even believe I could apply for college. For many people, COVID-19 was very difficult for me and my family. It cut my eighth-grade year short and began my worry about money. My mother is a housecleaner and depends on going to other people's houses to make income and that was completely removed because of COVID-19. I was also not going to therapy anymore because my therapist was going on maternity leave. Overall I was getting worse mentally. After months of worrying about whether we'll have money for groceries, raising protests for black lives, and my mental health getting worse by every minute, my birthday wasn't a good day. Usually on my birthday, I'm surrounded by friends and family who uplift me and make the day good but that wasn't what happened. Instead, it was only with my mother who still had to go to work that day, leaving me alone. I was sitting on my couch, watching the news when I tried to think about my future. I tried to think about life after COVID-19, whether I would be going to college and getting a degree, or if I would even be going high school. Seeing death every day gave me only one thought, death. That I wouldn't be able to do the things I've wanted to do. I talked about this with my mother and she gave me some pieces of advice, "There is only one way to go when you hit rock bottom, up". I slowly realized that even though I was not doing well, this wasn't the end. That we will get through this and have a future that will be fulfilling and sustained. Going through this difficulty will make us stronger in the end. It's now been almost three years since COVID-19 happened and I'm now a senior in high school applying for colleges. During my sophomore year of high school, began to seriously think about what I wanted to do in my future and I would go back and think about my mental state during the pandemic. I was thinking about how many people were going through the same thing as me or more and wanted to do something to help them. I began to research social work and how they help people every single day. From that day on, I knew that being a social worker would be my future. A big part of my mental instability was the money worries. I'm blessed that me and my mother are not in the same position as before but now I worry about how I will pay for college. I've taken college and AP classes throughout high school to minimize the cost of college but I will still be worried about the cost. That is why this scholarship will help me get to my dream future of helping people going through hard times mentality.

As a Gen Zer, I feel this immense pressure to push for change. With injustice happening every day, I feel that since my generation is going to have to live with it every day, we need to change it for the better. As I fight for a better future, I think about why we are fighting when it should be the people who created these problems. I'm calling representatives and going to marches fighting for a better future with other people my age but I never see the people who created these problems. I feel that the Ode to Millennials-Gen Z allows me to see what the older generation thinks of us. To the older generation, these problems we are facing today weren't problems to them. Let's take climate change for example. To the older generation, climate change didn't exist to them. It wasn't public knowledge of the effects of fossil fuels and greenhouse gas, it was just a part of life. Hindsight is twenty/twenty and to us, these problems are obvious but that is an impossible thing to expect from the older generation. The older generation was once the younger generation, fighting for racial injustice during the Civil Rights Movement. It would be expected that if they knew about climate change, they would be fighting just like my generation is doing. When I now question why the older generation isn't fighting with us, I'll think about how them these problems to them aren't real problems. They didn't know they were causing a problem at the moment. Instead of worrying about why someone didn't do something in the past, I will instead continue to fight for a better future for all generations, young and old.
    “Stranger Things” Fanatic Scholarship
As we wait for season five of Stranger Things, I think about who could defeat the next big villain. Each season has the whole group working together to conquer the threat but throughout the season there are small groups that give the show more humor and heart. It is these small groups that always bring me back to the show and there is virtually anyone who could be grouped. One of the main things I love about this show is how it brings characters together that nobody ever thought about. For the next season, my dream team that I believe could beat the next supernatural threat is Max Mayfield, Robin Buckley, and Joyce Byers. When you first see this squad the first question might be that they are all different ages, how are they supposed to work together? However, this age difference is imperative for a squad in Stranger Things. Having an adult who can help with finding weapons, a young adult who can find connections or other people who might be connected to the threat and one of the kids who have personal experience with the threat is crucial for the folks of Hakwin. Another part of this group is their humanity. All three of these ladies have gone through many difficulties such as Joyce almost losing her Hopper and Will, Robin being a lesbian in a time were queer people were being discriminated against, and Max going through the trauma with Vecna, these ladies have past that can help them defeat once and for all the Stranger Things threat. Overall, having a stronger, powerful, and reliable group that will deafeat the villian is cruacil for the town of Hawkins and I belive that Max, Joyce, and Robin have the ability to do that. Besides, it is about time the ladies do the hard work.
    Zendaya Superfan Scholarship
When it comes to talking about the next It girl in the acting world, there is only one name that comes to mind, Zendaya. From her early years on Disney playing characters like Rocky Blue and K.C. Copper to her award-nominated role in Eupohora as Rue Bennett, she has shown that she is the future of the industry. She is also multiple talented with her smash hit single "Replay", getting second place on the sixteenth season of Dancing with the Stars, and being a fashion ambassador for brands like Louis Vuitton, Bulgari, and Valentino, she is truly a work of art. As a multiple-talented person, she gained fame and what I believe to be her most admirable trait about her is her acting skills. As the years go on, she shows time and time again that she is an acting goddess. Her ability to get into different types of characters and still give every one of her characters a new perspective is something many actors take years to perfect but she can do this at only twenty-seven years old. A great example of this is with her Emmy-winning role as Rue Bennett in Euphoria. Rue is a teenage girl struggling with an addiction to drugs. Zendaya plays Rue with the respect and dignity needed for a role like this. She learned from Sam Levinson, who himself was an addict, what it is like being an addict and the struggles of being an addict as a teenager. This type of respect for a role is rarely seen but as a masterclass of actors, that is just what Zendaya does. Overall, Zendaya's ability to be a masterclass in so many different jobs shows her determination and pride for her career which is why she is such an admirable person.
    Netflix and Scholarships!
One of the best things about having a Netflix membership is the vast amount of context to consume. Whether you want a rom-com or a classic slasher, there is something for you. When it comes to what I look for on Netflix, I tend to gravitate to more myserty or dark teen dramas and Netflix has a plethora of these types of dramas such as Dare Me, Riverdale, and Pretty Little Liars. Although Netflix has many more drama that I could spill on, my personal favorite is The Society which follows a group of teens who after returning from a school field trip discover that all the adults are missing and they have to find either a way out or where the adults are. The first aspect of the show that hooked me from the beginning was the plot itself. It's most teens' worst nightmare to have all their support system disappear in the blink of an eye. You question what the characters will do, will they panic and go crazy or stay sane and try to find where their parents went? The show does a good job of continuing the main plotline with the side plots connecting well with the main plot. The side plot is also interesting with the characters having their romantic relationship develop and new ones created, both good and bad. Without the plot, the show wouldn't be as successful as it was but it is not the only important aspect of the show. To have a good plot, you need good characters, and The Society succeeds greatly in this. The main character, Allie, goes from following her sister and what she believes to be best for the town to gaining power after her sister's death and going through grief while running a town. Another main character that is extremely important is Campbell. He goes from being the creepy dude at school that sulks behind the school to getting the town to try to overturn the "government". He is an amazing antagonist that makes you just want to jump through your TV screens and choke him. The side characters are also well acted and give more life to the plot such a deaf, gay character who is tackling having a crush but also helping his best friend keep a pregnancy a secret from the public to the quiet girl turned bad girl but secretly hiding the fact that she in an abusive relationship. Each character brings something to the show that makes it better. Overall, the show is successful in what it wants to be, a good mystery drama. Unfortualy it was canceled after a major cliffhanger so we can only assume that all the parents came back and that everyone went back to normal lives.
    Once Upon a #BookTok Scholarship
Books have become a source of escapism for me since the pandemic and BookTok is one of the main contributors to this newfound love. On Booktok you can find partially a genre of your choice and there will be someone recommending a new book for you, which is how I found my three favorite BookTok books. My first must-have novel is The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo. It is about actress Evelyn Hugo and her life story as an old Hollywood actress and how her love life developed during her life. In my opinion, this is one of the most popular BookTok books, and for good reason. The book can hook you in and twist you throughout that keeps you interested. This book also had a personal effect on me since its main character is a bisexual Latina which allows me to connect with the character on a deeper level. The main reason why I enjoy The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo and why it's so popular is because of the main relationship. Most BookTok books follow a straight white couple and The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo subverts the reader's expectation and delivers a loving queer couple. My second pick for my BookTok bookshelf is I Kissed Shara Wheeler. It follows Chloe and her search for Shara Wheeler after kissing her, with clues that require her to work with others who have kissed Shara Wheeler. The main comments of the novel that I feel make it so popular on BookTok and to me personal is its ability to weave in comedy, mystery, and romance cleverly. It can please multiple readers by giving the reader something to grab onto such as the romance between Shara and Chloe, the mystery of finding Shara, and the comedy between the group finding Shara. My final pick is a pit left flied but is 1984. It is about a dystopian future where Britain is ruled by a totalitarian government called "Big Brother" and follows the characters as they try to dismantle this government. On Booktok, there are different subgroups such as romantic booktok, horror booktok, and queer booktok and but people still believe that literature that is highly regrauded would not be on Booktok. There is a whole sub-group dedicated to analyzing and reading novels that are most commonly read in high school. Reading 1984 without the focus of schoolwork made me appreciate the novel and its themes of control much better. Overall, BookTok is a place for all different types of book lovers to find their people and enjoy books together. Whether it is reading the most popular books on BookTok or looking back at old classics, there is a place for everyone in BookTok.
    Liv For The Future Scholarship
As I come to the final years of childhood, I look back on the good, the bad, and the ugly times. Times when I was a little too immature for my age and times when I was doing grown-up things when I probably should have been playing and having fun. Looking back has also shown me how I've prepared for adulthood. I can sit here and say that I'm underprepared for adulthood but if I truly like how I've lived thus far, I've been setting the building blocks for my future since my freshman year of high school. I've developed traits such as empathy for others and justice for others that are imperative for becoming an adult but the one trait that I have developed that has surprised me the most is leadership. I've always assumed that I wouldn't have much leadership in life as an introvert. I just assumed that being a follower would be my calling. That was until I had a school year-long volunteer opportunity. In my dance studio, once you get to a certain age and skill level, you get to volunteer as an assistant dance teacher for the younger classes. I was assigned to teach the 5-7-year-old class with a fellow dancer. The first day of teaching was very nerve-racking, I was just following what my dance teacher told us to do and helping the students. Something I noticed was how distant the other assistant dance teacher was with the kids. She rarely interacted with them and directed them all to me if they needed something. I didn't have a problem with this though because as classes went on, I got closer with the kids. I also got more comfortable as an authority figure and began to lead more classes. Still, my fellow assistant teacher was having a hard time with leading. Suddenly, she had to quit during the middle of the season due to family matters. This left me and my dance teacher alone teaching around 20 kids in each class. I was worried that as the only assistant dance teacher, I would crumble under pressure but the complete opposite happened. I stepped up as a leader and was determined to make this year fun and educational for the students. As the year was coming to an end, the eventual recital was looming over me. I would be the only one backstage who would know all of my kid's costumes and time to be on stage . I was in charge of my number but also my kid's number. The day of the recital was crazy, to say the least. The day prior was the dance rehearsal and it showed me how crazy everything would be. With the quick changes and getting my kids in line in their right costume, It was just mayhem everywhere. But I wasn't going to crumble under the pressure. We have been practicing for a whole year tonight so I was determined to get all my kids ready and in order and that I did. I can't tell you how I felt during the day because I was just balled up with so much adrenaline that I completely forgot the whole day. It wasn't until my dance teacher asked me how I was able to get my kids ready all alone that I realized what I just did. After that night. leadership came naturally. I now teach two classes with an assistant teacher and have developed leadership in school and work as well. It is because of my leadership, that I feel prepared for what my future holds.
Reasons To Be - In Memory of Jimmy Watts
With the plethora of community service I've done, I'm bound to come out with a new view on life each time. During each of my volunteering experiences, I've met people who have changed my view on life whether that be the older woman at the thrift store or the little boy in the dance class, they've all had an immense change in my life. Out of all the people I have interacted with, one person has monumentally changed me: I've changed how I see others and my future, and it all started with my first community service. When the opportunity to volunteer at the local homeless shelter came, I jumped on board but not for the best reason. I wanted to volunteer to get into a good college, get into the National Honor Society, and get my volunteering hours for school. I wasn't thinking about the good about volunteering and how this helps many people, I was only thinking about myself. When I first stepped into the shelter I was shocked. I was expecting an overcrowded dirty place but it was the complete opposite. The shelter was empty with a janitor cleaning the hallways. I planned to ask zero questions during the visits but now had a million questions. Our guide was one of the workers at the shelter and her goal was to be as informative as possible. She told us about the history of the shelter and how it is the biggest shelter in Connecticut and is also one of the few that shelter men, women, and children. She told us that most of the people leave during the day to either go to work or just do other things. The shelter also had a time limit for how long people could stay in the shelter but most people leave earlier than expected because the case workers from the shelter help people find jobs and even housing. The special thing about this shelter is that it had built an apartment complex to house people from the shelter. As she was telling us all this, I felt my world change. I had all these misconceptions about homeless people and homeless shelters and in the blink of an eye, all of those misconceptions left. After doing our assigned tasks, we had lunch and I sat next to the guide. She asked me what I wanted to do in my future and I told her that I wanted to go to college but didn't know what I wanted to major in. She then asked me if I enjoyed my day and thought what she said about the shelter and how it runs was interesting and I emphatically said yes. She then suggested that I major in social work. It was never a major I was looking at but after that day it was my number one major in mind. She told me that there are many avenues I could go into and Conneceiit had many opportunities for those majoring in social work. Talking to her changed my whole view on what I want to do in the future. I now volunteer as much as possible and am planning to major in social work to continue working in the community. If it wasn't for that guide, I wouldn't had this epiphany for my life.

Challenges in life can be small or large. They can affect you more than others. They can be the basis of why you are who you are today. When I think about challenges and how they affect me, I think of them as a three-act structure, similar to a movie. The first act is the set-up, where the challenge comes to fruition in your life. The second act is the confrontation, where you are currently in the challenge and are trying to fight through it. The final act is the resolution, where you have successfully or unsuccessful overcome this challenge. As someone who has faced many challenges, both big and small, using this system helps me compartmentalize the different challenges I've faced. For most of middle school, I had really bad grades. Having gone to a catholic school, most of the education was more advanced than regular public school. I had felt less worthy than the other students and saw myself as the dumb kid. It was a trait that I wasn't happy about but quickly became my number one attribute. All of my close friends would try and help me with school work but it was no use, I just wasn't as smart as the other students. Going into high school, I wanted to change. This was my opportunity to become someone new, someone who was smart and intelligent. My freshmen year of high school was also very different because it was during COVID-19 so I was home more often. Using this to my benefit, I began to research the best study methods and quickly developed a system to help me succeed in high school. First, I used a planner to set aside time for when certain homework should be done and when I should study for different tests. Next, I took notes, paying close attention to how I set up my notes so that at a glance I would be able to get the most important details. Finally, and most important, was to have a good relationship with my teacher and not be afraid of asking questions or asking for help. It took some time for me to get the hang of things but soon enough I was getting straight A's in all of my classes. Now, in my senior year, I have a 4.0 GPA and ranked 13th in my class of 181 students. Seeing my growth from middle school to high school has shown me that I can change and get to where I want to be in life. I just have to put my mind to it and that is what I plan on doing in my future. As college decision comes, I see myself working harder than ever to get to where I want to be, whether that be getting my bachelor's and master's degree in social work or whatever I want to do when I am older, I am confident that I will successful in achieving that goal.

Being a first-generation American comes with a lot of responsibility. I am made to carry the responsibility of being the first American in my family, which is a hard responsibility. It is like having this bright light on you 24/7 anticipating what I will do in my future. I have a whole family that is looking to see what I will do as the future of our family heritage. As much as I don't want to say that this pressure has been a bad one, all this pressure on one person does put a toll on them. Although I'm not the only American in my family anymore, I was the first, so I was essentially the blueprint. I was like this relic in the family. "My daughter is American", "My granddaughter is American", "My cousin is American". I get faulted around like I'm a lottery ticket. It is with this important reputation that pressure gets to me. Many of my dreams do align with what my family believes is best for me such as going to a trade high school and going to college but It always seems that we have a different end goal such as picking hairdressing instead of health tech and wanting to major in social work instead of the business of pre-med. All of this to say, I understand why my family puts so much pressure on me. For some of them, being born in America is a privilege in itself. For them, their dream is to be able to just go to America let alone be an American so being an American to them is like a one-way ticket to success. They don't believe that the pressure they put on me is bad because they believe that it is the appropriate pressure for an American. They also want to see the good in me. If they see me doing good things, then the family legacy will be good. My family legacy is on my back and they feel that they are helping me get to that point. I've reflected many times on the pressure of being a first-generation American and how most of the pressure has made me who I am today. The need to always help others and to be as good as I can be so that I don't make a bad first impression, all of those traits have been influenced by this lifelong pressure I will have as a first-generation American. It has also helped me appreciate my family and their belief more. I can complain about their pressure on me but I also thank them for sacrificing so much for me. It's because of them that I get to go to college and go to a trade high school. Overall, the pressure does get to me but it's the reminder of why they pressure me that keeps me pushing for success.

When it comes to getting involved in my community and helping others out, it just comes naturally. Whether helping young children learn new things or cleaning homeless shelters, I've always been helping in the community. There are many reasons why I volunteer, it builds my community up, builds my self-esteem, and overall makes me and my community better. It's for these reasons and many more that I help others. There are also many accomplishments I've had when volunteering such as learning how to cook big meals and clean big areas but my biggest accomplishment is how I've been able to connect with people and learn from them. The experience that stuck with me the most when it came to learning from my community was with one of my students. I frequently volunteer at my dance studio as an assistant teacher and I get to meet and teach younger girls and boys of different age groups. During my elementary kids class, one of the girls decided to sit next to all of the teachers. This action wasn't weird in itself minus the fact that she sat next to another teacher and not me. This student in particular didn't know a lot of English and preferred to talk in Portuguese and since I was the only one who spoke Portuguese, she would tend to only talk to me so seeing her sit next to the other teacher was surprising. It wasn't until I overheard her speaking in English that I realized what she was doing. One of her biggest dreams was to be able to speak to her friends and teacher in English so she started to speak more to the other girls in the class, which helped her understand and learn English better. Her next goal was to talk to the other teachers but she was nervous thinking that the teacher would not understand her. To ease her nervousness I reminded her that the teachers were here to help and that they would be elated to see her learning English. Seeing the smile on her face as she and the teacher were having a conversation made me realize why I did this. It's for moments like these where I can see someone grow and develop into a new being. Afterward, the other teacher pulled me aside and said that she almost got emotional when having the conversation with her because she was so happy that they were finally able to talk to each other. It's moments like these where I feel that my influence shines. I can do as much change in my community as I want but it is my effect on other that show where my influence is being benefited the most. In my future work, I plan on continuing this change and seeing how it impacts those in my community.

As women, we've always had that experience when we felt extremely uncomfortable but felt that we couldn't do anything about it. I've felt like this many times but the one that stuck out to me was during my junior year of high school when a boy in my grade kept on making me uncomfortable. At first, I was being nice, talking with him and hanging out when he came up to me but it slowly escalated to always wanting to be around me and never leaving me alone. I was giving him the cold shoulder and being standoffish but he continued. After constant harassment, I finally confided in my friends. I told them everything, how he was always around me and how he would ask uncomfortable questions and say weird things. She said that I should set some boundaries with him and explain to him that I don't like how he makes me feel uncomfortable. She also recommended that I ask one of my guy friends what I should do. After talking to one of my guy friends, he said the same thing, create some boundaries. The problem was, I thought that it was disrespectful to tell him that I didn't want to hang out anymore. In my head, I thought that if I told him that his actions were making me feel uncomfortable, he would get mad at me and worse, maybe physically harm me. It was after I told my therapist about him and my concern was when we both made a plan. During lunch when he would come over and sit next to me, I would have my group of friends around me in case something happen The next day came and he came and sat next to me during lunch. He kept on asking me why I didn't do my hair up more and that I should wear less makeup. I finally had enough and told him that he was making me uncomfortable and that I wanted to set up some boundaries in our friendship. He was defensive at first saying that he was just being friendly but eventually allowed me to explain what I would feel comfortable with. I told him that during class if I'm doing something, don't interrupt me. Stop asking me inappropriate questions and avoid touching me without asking. I had never felt so powerful in my life. I was able to stand up for myself and give myself a voice. After that day he respected my wishes and never had a problem again. I learned that I need to stand up for myself more. That my emotions are important and if my emotions are being affected, I need to change that.

There are many different reasons why someone would pursue a degree in mental health, growth, opportunities, being challenged, and the opportunity to make a difference. Although I resonate with all those reasons, the main reason I plan on pursuing the mental health field is because of my personal experience with mental health. Most would describe me as a very jolly, happy person who doesn't take things too seriously and although that is who I am, I also have a history of anxiety. I'm not sure when my anxiety began but my first memory of heightened anxiety was my first day of fifth grade. Usually, the first day at a new school is nerve ranking but it should have been a breeze for me since I was used to switching schools. At this point, it would be my third time switching school and yet I wasn't used to the feeling of going to a new environment. I was sitting in my mom's car, shaking with fear. In my head, it was a fight between two thoughts, that no one would like me and I would be an outcast, and I needed to get out of the car and not expect the worst. I was thinking this all while my mom was trying to calm my mind and get me to get out of the car but it was no use. Years have gone by since my first day of fifth grade and it is clear that I was having a panic attack. I was only able to come to this conclusion after having more panic attacks and finally going to therapy. It was when I told my therapist this story and many others similar to the first day that she told me that I had anxiety. Getting the answer to a problem that I've been facing was something I have been hoping for. For years I have been wondering what was wrong with me and now I finally got the answer and can use it to better myself. I'm now a senior in high school and preparing myself for a career in the mental health field. In my future career, I plan on doing what my therapist did for me, giving me the answer I've been looking for. It was going to therapy and having someone help me get through my anxiety that pushed me into choosing a career in mental health. I want to make a difference in people's lives by helping them get the answers they've been looking for and helping them get through any issue they have. That is why I'm pursuing a degree in the mental health field.
    Barbie Dream House Scholarship
Creating my own Barbie Dream House would be completely different from the original dream house, but I still want to appreciate how perfect the original dream house is. The house perfectly encapsulates what young girls want to live in when they're older. The bright pink color covering each inch of the house and the ginormous slide from the main bedroom down to the front door, it is one of the best representations of a young girl's mind. As I got older, the bright pink and huge rooms didn't intrigue me but the younger me was obsessed. A perfect dream house has to have a perfect location. The original is set in Mabliu, which works perfectly for Barbie's aesthetic. When it comes to where I would locate it, I would need a very spooky area that had a dark atmosphere. The best location that fits that exact description is Salem, Massachusetts. It is a city with a rich history and an amazingly scary aesthetic. Having the house on a hill with plenty of foliage is the finest environment for my dream house. The look of the house of crucial to a perfect dreamhouse. Do I want it big or small? Stairs? How many rooms? How big is each room? These are the questions necessary for the dreamhouse. The best representation of my dream house is the Addams family house. The Victorian style with the dilapidated flair works perfectly with the Salem atmosphere. In addition to its eccentric architecture that perfectly encapsulates the gothic feel that I'm looking for. Overall it's the ideal look for my dream house. Finally, a perfect dream house needs some special features. Barbie's dream house has a slide, elevator, and rooftop deck. When thinking about the special features in my dream house, I'm thinking about features that would work with the atmosphere and architecture of the house. The first special feature in my dreamhouse is a spiral staircase. A spiral staircase screams gothic and elegant. It also spruces up a simple part of the house. The next special feature is stained-glass windows. Inspired by different catholic cathedrals, stained-glass windows bring in beautiful colors that help add different shades to a dark dwelling. The final special feature is an altar, preferably at the end of the hallway. The altar, used for spiritual rituals, would be decorated with crystals, herbs, a chalice, a wand, a pentacle, an athame, incense, candles, a broom, a cauldron, and a bell. All these items work to create the witchy vibe that is needed for a dreamhouse in Salem. It's these special features complete and create my perfect dream house.
    Aspiring Musician Scholarship
Music has shaped so much of how I view the world. It has helped me see how people connect, how it creates change, and how it can cure someone's issues but the most impactful way music has shaped the way I view the world is how it helps folks learn new things such as languages. As the daughter of an immigrant, I grew up speaking two languages, Portuguese at home and English everywhere else. My mother rarely spoke English except for when she was singing. She loved all types of music, English and Portuguese music, all day long she listened and sang to music. Even if she didn't have the best voice and even understand the songs, she was still singing. I vividly remember early mornings going to school and my mom singing "I Wanna Go" by Britney Spears. You would think with the amount of energy she had that she had been awake for hours, that's how much she loved listening to music. Her favorite artists to listen to were Britney Spears, Beyonce, and Rihanna. Every morning it would be a new song. One morning "Halo" and another "Don't Stop the Music", if you were anywhere near my mom, you would hear music. One day, after picking me up from dance, my mom told me that she had a dentist appointment at a new office. Previously she went to a Brazilian dentist's office but this time she was going to an English-speaking office. Since the appointment was during school hours, I wouldn't be able to go and help her translate. She was rightfully stressed, worried that she wouldn't understand the dentist and they not understand her. While we were talking, "S&M" by Rihanna was playing in the background. It was listening to the song that sparked an idea in my mother's head. She would listen to different English-speaking songs to help her learn and understand English. She tried finding new artists that would expand her English such as Jason Mraz, Amy Winehouse, and Christiana Perri. Although they all are good artists, none of them help her until she listens to "Rolling in the Deep" by Adele. It was like nothing she had even heard before. It was romantic and powerful. After discovering more songs by Adele such as "Someone Like You" and "Set Fire to the Rain" she was hooked. She bought Adele's album "21" and listened to it nonstop. Now my mornings I would listen to "Rumor Has It" and "Turning Tables". As the days passed and my mom listened to more Adele, her English became better. When we would go to a restaurant, she would order for herself, and at work, she would understand her clients more. Although there is no proof that listening to Adele improved her English, the amount that she was listening, was a major factor. On the day of her dentist appointment, she picked me up from school and exclaimed her joy over the fact that she was able to talk and understand everyone at the dentist's office, all the while "Chasing Pavement" was playing in the car. After that day I've seen how bilingual people use music to learn new languages. It's stories like these that help me see how music has shaped the way I view the world.

Ah, money, we all need it but somehow don't have it. My mom used to say that all the time. As a single immigrant mother, it always seemed like she was living paycheck to paycheck, but if you asked me, it didn't feel like it. She always made sure that I was taken care of and never felt that I was missing out. It was only after I got older that I noticed our struggles, my mom rarely bought things for herself and always kept buying groceries till the last minute. I never asked my mom if we were poor because I didn't want her to think I wasn't getting enough. Eventually, it just became a thing we both acknowledged, that yes we were lower class but still had money to have a house, food in the fridge, clothes on our backs, and even some extra for personal needs but I still felt that my mom was neglecting her own needs for me. I finally asked my mom why she didn't buy herself anything and explained that she does, it's just not as much as I think she should. It was from that day forward that my opinion on money changed. It made me see how even if you work hard for your money, it still isn't enough for what you need. The story about my mom and money led me to have a responsible relationship with money. I try to be as frugal as possible because I never know what could happen. If I get any money, I try to save it as long as I can and if I have to use it, I'm trying to find the least cost-effective solution. I also try to find ways to get money. Although I'm currently not working, during the summer I worked two jobs and even did hair on the side all for extra cash. Doing surveys that give gift cards and babysitting the neighbor's kids, I would do as much as I can for a little extra cash. I did all of this for me to be able to live a comfortable life in the future. I want to be able to buy items that I want and still be able to provide for the needs of my future family. To others that seems like a fairly normal thing but for many it's a dream. I also live like this for my money. Now that I changed my ways, I've seen her be more willing to buy personal items for herself which has made her a much happier person. When it comes to this money, it would change my life immensely. I've always wanted to go to college but the cost has been a deterrent. I would be the first in my family to finish college and get a good career but again the cost is just too much. Of course, there are financial aid and scholarships which give me hope for my future. That's why I would use this money to go to a good college, get a good education, and create a better future for myself.

When talking about my family, I'm stuck in a difficult position. I'm a first-generation American with most of my family living in Brazil so talking about my family has always been very awkward. I never had a personal story with my extended family, only stories my mom would tell me. I felt out of place and different because I never had a unique experience with my family. This changed however after having a conversation with a girl in my health class. We had to talk to the person next to us and share a familial experience that shaped the way we look at the world. I was panicking, stumbling to find a story about my family. Right as I was going to tell a story my mom told me, the girl next to me said “I don't have any stories about my family”. I was taken aback. We both had limited family stories since we were both first-generation Americans and our families both lived in different countries. We were in the same boat, we have big families but don’t live with any of them. Still, we had to find one story that shaped how we see the world so she suggested stories that our parents have told about our families since most of our family experiences come from our parents' experiences. I was having a difficult time thinking about a story my mother had about her family. The girl told me a story about her dad and how his family reacted when he moved to America. Her telling this story reminds me of my mom's past when she was coming to the USA. My mom's dream in life was to live in the USA but with her overbearing mom not allowing her, she thought she would never be able to go. It was only after her younger brother had left in the middle of the night, suddenly her dreams started to become reality. But my Mom finally told my grandma that she wanted to go to the USA and my grandma was disappointed. She called her an ungrateful daughter who didn’t care about her mother. My mom tried to explain how this was the best decision for her and my dad if they wanted to have a family but my grandma still believed that she should stay in Brazil. After a couple of months of thinking, my mom packed all the belongings she could and she and my dad moved to the USA. As much as moving to the USA made her relationship with her mother worse and would eventually ruin her relationship with my dad, she is happy that she followed her heart and didn’t listen to what others said. As we both finished telling our stories we realized that we had the same outcome. Both of our parents sacrificed important relationships to chase happiness. Both of our stories showed me how even if you are going to make many disappointed, your happiness is important and if you prioritizing your happiness doesn't make others happy then they shouldn’t be in your life.

Me and Barack Obama certainly don't have many things in common but one thing we do have in common is being raised by a single mother. I always think about that fact because my whole life I was told that being raised by a single mother and not having a father would ruin my future but that is certainly not the case, in fact, being raised by a strong and resilient mother has helped me have a successful future. My mother has lent me a whole host of life lessons throughout my life that have shaped me into who I am today. Throughout my life, she has been nothing short of a hard worker. She has shown me time and time again the importance of working hard. From working early in the morning and late at night every week and still having time to care for me, her hard work has shown me resilience through adversity. She has also shown me how kindness goes a long way. Her motto in life was "feed the poor and help those in need" and she lived by those words. Advocating for volunteering in homeless shelters, food drives, and donating food and blood. Even when we were going through hard times financially, she still made an effort to help others. Her kindness and empathy is something I take in my everyday life. I learned early on the importance of compassion. Seeing my mother struggle gave me first-hand experience in understanding others. With her sacrificing her needs for my needs I learned how to truly empathize with the people around me. I'm able to understand and offer support to those I struggle with and lend a helpful hand. My mother has always been extremely independent and this is something she instilled in me at a young age but as I got older I realized that she had to be independent. In a two-parent household, there is room for dependence but as a single parent, there is only you. Seeing my mom make decisions and manage responsibly all on her own and come out successful helped me develop a sense of independence that I value. Being an only child, I had a lot of time with my mother. I used to hear my friends say to me that they never sit down with their mom and just talk about their day because they had siblings or their mom was talking to their dad but I never had this problem. I was able to have extra quality time with my mom which helped us develop an open and honest mother-daughter relationship. Even with her busy schedule, she always made time for me which I admire and I take with me now. Over the last 17 years of my life, my mother has given me a plethora of life lessons and all of those lessons have shaped me into the strong, resilient, empathic, and independent woman I am today. Her struggles and sacrifices weren’t for nothing, they were for my future and I am eternally grateful for that. As I enter into the last years of adolescence and become an adult, I thank my mother for everything she has done for me because, without her, my future would be nothing.

She immediately reported my abuser to the authority and he was sent to prison. She also put me in a new school where I could make friends that I'm still friends with to this day. I also started going to therapy which helped me unravel many of my fear. I also on creating safe hubs for those escaping abusive family situations.
